Tayyab Tahir has been in good touch over the last year. He marked his HBL PSL 8 debut with a whirlwind 65 and made 137 runs at 144.21 and was the best batter of the Pakistan Cup, that concluded in January. He also bagged player of the final award for his match-winning 71 for Central Punjab. He made 708 runs in first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy at an average of 59 and recorded four centuries and one half-century.

“Whenever a cricketer starts his journey, he idolises the ones who wear the national colours and dream of doing the same,” Tayyab said. “I am grateful to Almighty that I have been provided the opportunity to serve my country. My parents are going to be very happy when they see me play.

“There will definitely be some nerves when I play for Pakistan, but I will be able to overcome them as I have been playing competitive and quality cricket at domestic level and in the HBL Pakistan Super League. I am very excited to make my Pakistan debut.”
 
No idea why he was selected going by his PSL performances.

Did nothing except score one 50, which is nothing special.
 
Not too hopefull about his international potential against the big boys but exppected to perform well against the minnows. Didn't deserve the selction .

Struggled badly today.

Very average innings and a poor shot to get out.
 
Another awful player. Looks ugly with every shot he plays. Tailender level. Can’t believe the trash level batsmen Pakistan are producing m. And this guys supposedly is the best we have in Pakistan. We are in dire straits in terms of batting talent. No confidence, no power just rabbits caught in headlights the lot of them. Frustrating to see

Is he even a batsman?
The way he swings his bat with no foot work, no bent back, not having his head down and no focus on the ball ... he is not even a third class galli mohallah type player. Are our selectors dumb and blind or both?
 
He has played many ugly innings but this was the ugliest one .

They just select players like him, just to make Shaan look better . Shaan or Chcaha playing the next game .

I've said this before and I'll say it again. He's got the technique of a club cricketer. His selection is highly questionable.
 
He has literally got no technique. He bats like he is holding the bat for the first time. It’s embarrassing people like this untalented guy is playing for Pakistan.

And I think that may well be the last we see of him in international cricket.

The problem is we never learn.

A guy has one or two decent innings in the PSL and that's it, he's the next best thing and the selectors pick him for the national team.

It happens too often.
 
He had 2 good domestic seasons and that is why he was picked in PSL this year but the lad needs to work really hard on his technique. His trigger movement is like a pendulum swing.
 
All of you are going on and on about his PSL performances. While I don't like him and think he should be booted out now, his selection was based on merit due to his domestic performances. The PSL doesn't have to be the only standard for selection. However, after seeing how he has fared against Afghanistan who are not even on the level of other top sides, he needs to be out right away. With his technique he'll never survive in international cricket.

I have always stated he’s a rubbish bat. Glad people have realised now. Some fans wanted him in odis too. Thankfully we won’t hear that anymore. Should be the last of his international career. He’s rubbish against pace and the drama of him being excellent against spin is also over.
 
We lost the series to the minnow Afghanistan , which is a shame , but I'm glad we won't see some pathetic players in Pakistan color after their poor show in this series namely Azam, Tayyab and for the 100th time Faheem.

I think he still deserved his chance based upon his record but has done himself no favours.
 
Ofc, people are going to be harsh on him after international performances amounting to not much.

But to those who are domestic cricket connoisseurs, what did y’all think of him in domestics prior to PSL? How did he look?

It’s easy to say he has no talent after 3 games only in internationals. But I want to paint the full picture now before I judge someone.

I will no longer jerk my knee at budding new talent. :afridi

If that was the case, the likes of Mirza Baig, Usman Khan, Abbas Afridi, etc. would've been on the plane to Sharjah. Tayyab Tahir was picked in the PSL due to his domestic record and selected for the national team for the same reason. Although he has been awful and not cut out for international cricket, one cannot deny his merit-based selection.

What we must ACTUALLY stop is picking a player purely for their PSL performances like the case with Azam Khan, who never gave precedence to domestic cricket and only wants the easy way into the team. Unless the player is absolutely extraordinary or special and young and fit, that's a different story. In Azam Khan's case, he's none of that and even performance-wise only performed in a few innings in the tournament and failed when it mattered most.

Slectors job is not to pick a player based on stats only, in that case a clerk can do the slectors job . Selectors are supoosed to know the cricket and pick a player based upon talent and technique also . After watching Tayyab play at PSL, it was very obious the guy had no technique to be successful at higher level , he should have not been selcted .
 
I think I'm one of the few ppers who does somewhat rate Tayyab Tahir, he is a solid player spin and has got a decent shot selection. He does have faults in his game such as strike rotation as well as his fitness.

I would give him the T20s against the Kiwis. His domestic stats are much better than some who have been given a long rope for Pakistan. But I would persist with him for a little bit more.
 
Pakistan domestic statistics are meaningless. What’s wrong with his fitness and why does it matter to you? He needs to grow a few inches, develop some hand-eye coordination, sort out his reflexes, learn to hit the ball off the square and, of course, deal with the strike rotation issue you’re so concerned about.

That is a long list.

Would some cricketing specific fitness not help out with some of these issues (barring height). Little bit of agility work, some functional strength training, stronger legs/core. What do you think of his back lift?

He would not have been picked for national duty without PSL8.

For Pakistan selectors, the PSL is the golden goose when it comes to national selection.
 
Dropped from the T20I squad and added as a reserve in the ODI squad for the home series against NZ. Did not impress in the series against Afghanistan so selectors seeing if they can give him another chance as a reserve.
 
I'm afraid his international career has come and gone for now. I don't see him getting another chance for a while unless he starts pulling up a hell of a lot of trees in a future PSL

PSL should not have been the only reason to give him a chance.

Problem is that when decisions are taken to "show that we are different from the previous regime" then you get such issues.

Honestly Tayyab was never a T20 player. He piled a lot of runs in domestic cricket and should have been given chances in ODIs. There is something about his batting style and wrist work which may work in 50 overs cricket. He has a different technique which can be off putting for bowlers.

But I guess we wanted the small city card fat guy Haris Sohail back, who has done zilch to earn back his spot.
 
Everyone seems to have a positive vive about saud shakeel being added into the odi squad, but what about Tayyab? He was able to destroy a relatively weak and young Indian side and he looks really really good against pace as shown In the Afghanistan series.

However his ability against spinners worries me, especially since all 3 of his early dismissals against Afghanistan were against Spin.

He could be an option at number 5 for Pakistan in the Asia Cup but they preferred Agha at this position and in the World Cup they are likely play Saud Shakeel at this position which seems to be a good option. Tayyab has time on his side and I am sure he'll eventually be playing ODI cricket for Pakistan.
 
I wanted to make this post for a while.

Does anyone know why Tayyab was randomly discarded? I've never such weird reasoning.

Tayyab was selected in the Afghanistan odi series and was ironically frontline for the Asia cup as saud was the travelling reserve.

Then in the 3rd odi, pcb makes a last minute change and let's saud in while tayyab is now suddenly the travelling reserve.

Then for odi cup, he's completly discarded altogether, not even being a reserve.

Tayyab didn't play a single game. This is so strange to me, he gets selected Then gets reserved last minute and then dropped completly, why?

I'm.not hating on saud, Saud is a fine player and should be in the team, but why at the expense of tayyab? What did he do? Why not at the expense of agha who is a proven failure atm with both bat and ball.

Does anyone know what's up with management's reasoning for tayyab getting booted to reserves and then booted altogether? Why was he even selected in the first place, if this was the treatment he'd get? Is he good at being a water boy?

I'm genuinely curious what the reasoning was for his call up if he wasn't in management's plans to begin with?

I think the PCB wanted someone with some experience for this WC. While Abdullah and Saud have limited experience, Tayyab hasn’t even made his debut.

Which he should have made (ODI debut) in the series vs Afghanistan. The grooming and exposure for new players is so bad/not taken care of at all. We can mention it a 1000 times but what was the point of Babar and co playing every sings game that series.

Because when Babar and Co didn’t play Afghanistan, we got whitewashed. That is not what we need going into a WC. It was one of our finals series and the main team needed to be there.
 
If Saud is playing then there will be no Tayyab Tahir in that playing 11. However, it is very unfortunate that he is dropped without even being given a chance against Afghanistan.

Tayyab Tahir has no ODI experience, he could have played that Afghan series but he was very unlucky to not get a chance. I will only replace Agha with Saud. That is the only change I can see.

Abdullah's experience not just in international odi but in list A is next to 0. He's in the team because babar has a love affair with his technique. Same reason abrar is in reserves because babar has a love affair with shadab and nawaz's bowling even though Nepal spinners were better then these 2.

What international experience did fakhar have when he opened in the semi final and final for Pakistan in CT 2017 and replaced ahmed shehzad last minute?

Before they played him as an opener, his only previous experience playing was playing one game at no 4 and failing outright because azhar Ali who was captain at the time didn't want to break the azhar, Shezad combo, Thankfully sarfi did.

This experience stuff is nonsense, imran Khan brought forth a completely inexperienced wasim for 1992 and look how that turned out.

I'm not saying tayyab is some legend or will be but it doesn't take a genius to figure out tayyab is much much superior to agha, Shadab and Nawaz in the squad especially agha considering he isn't be used as a bowling option anymore.

A middle order bat regardless of quality will be 100x superior to bits and pieces players. Surpassing agha, shadab and nawaz isn't really a high standard lol.

Bro, Agha can easily be replaced with Saud. Shadab can go for Usama. where are we gonna put Tayyab in that order considering rizwan is also there as well as Iftikhar? Tayyab has all the skills to be in the squad but his competition is with agha and saud.

Agha can easily be replaced with 4-5 players and Tayyab Tahir is one of them. I hope Pakistan go with Saud in place of Agha at number 5.

We both know shadab is never leaving lol, not in this WC atleast. He will play every match lol.

Tayyab needs to be no 5, saud no 4, chacha no 6 and haris no 7, but if you think haris is a hack then imad waseem at no 7 cause he can tonk, and you can use imad as part time, no need to have him bowl all 10 over, a he can bowl a couple of overs opening, cause I trust imad as an opening bowler way more then hasan rn considering his pace is dipping even below 130 atm.

As for rizzu, he can go into opening since ironically he's pur best opening option, Fakhar's lack of form, Imam's soft runs and Abdullah proving to he useless, he's our best bet. Granted what management shpuld do, is have haris as a reserve keep for multiple overs and rotate between rizzu and haris as a keeper.

Yep, I agree with that suggestion of Rizwan being an opener in Odi's as well. He is already opening in T20 so this slot will not be a problem for him or I will say that it should not be a problem for him.
 
Tayyab Tahir showed great resilience for Ghani Glass today in the match against SNGPL team in the President's Trophy Tournament 2023-24. He made 60 off 141 deliveries and helped his side to manage a draw against SNGPL today.
 
Tayyab Tahir marked his 7th First Class century during the fourth round of President's Trophy 2023-24. His crucial innings of 103 runs off 170 deliveries proved instrumental in Ghani Glass' effort to reach a total of 223 in their first innings rescuing the team from a daunting position of 80/5 against HEC.
 
In the sixth round of the President's Trophy 2023-24, Ghani Glass's Tayyab Tahir scored 53 off 93 in the second innings against WAPDA. Despite his effort, it was not sufficient, and WAPDA emerged victorious by 294 runs
 
Tayyab Tahir yet to contribute significantly for MS thus far in PSL 9. Gone for 26(18) against PZ.
