[PICTURES/VIDEOS] The Pakistan-Afghanistan cricket rivalry

Babar isn't that great against spin.
He averages 80 in some stat where Rizwan averages 40

I’m guessing those stats are inflated like their T20 stats opening against B string attacks on roads. Ish Sodhi level spinners are to blame for this,

No worries. Let’s see you averaging 80 against Rashid Khan, Mujeeb, Nabi and Noor.

Not all spinners are created equal, and I'm looking forward to the matchup between Babar Azam and Rashid Khan.
There is no disputing that Baber has been Rashid's bunny in the T20 format
Rashid has gotten the Prince out 6 times at an average of 13.16
Every hero has their kryopnite and the Afghan series will give Baber a chance to turn the tables, inshallah

Rivalry is no more. Now that Afghanistan is a friendly state, Pakistanis will not have to endure undue hostility from them.

The only rivalry is in the mind of some expat Afghan fans who should really be banned from stadia across England, Australia etc.

On the pitch Afghanistan have won nothing.

Umm they won the last series against Pakistan .....

Re read what you wrote. On pitch they won nothing while they won the last series

No need for passive aggression my brother. I was thinking of ODIs considering what is coming up.

I'm very happy Afghanistan won two T20 matches against Pakistan B-side.

Bro doesn't matter what you were thinking or had in ur heart.

Reread what you wrote. Be it a side or b side, in the books afghans beat Pakistan.

You send on the pitch they won nothing when they have.

Now to say I meant this or it was a b team, those are just excuses.

You wrote something, and you were proven wrong and now your coming up with excusea

Calm down brother!

I meant ODIs but it's ok. Heck the AFghans could win this match in accordance with Pakistans batting being weak against spin.

But it still doesn't change what else I wrote (you could re-read that ;)) about their fans being violent at various global venues.

Nope you did not. You can claim anything you want afterwards

You wrote on the pitch afghans have won nothing.

Stop trying to deny what you said now

Afghanistan are a boring side when they are not hostile towards Pakistan

I don’t mind Afghanistan playing against us as if they are fighting a war against Pakistan

Afghan fire v Pakistan ice is one of the best contests in cricket.

What rivalry? Afghans are nobodies in cricket, with all due respect, while Pakistan have a rich history in cricket.
well they did beat Pakistan in a t20 series and today got them all out for 201. They got the world's no1 batter out for 0 today

An irrelevant T20 series where Pakistan were playing their B team. Nobody cares about that series, except you perhaps.

And who cares if Afghanistan bowled out Pakistan for 209 and got Babar out for 0? They lost pretty badly in the end. They couldn't even cross 100. :ROFLMAO:

The poster originally said that afghanistan is yet to defeat pakistan, in response i rekinded him that they have already done that.

Pakistan’s current batting were pretty useless against them too. It’s not a one off either. Babar is Rashid Khan’s proven bunny

Pakistan are a much more established unit in international cricket to have a "rivalry" with Afghanistan. It's mostly always the Afghans who are riled up in the recent encounters. And now with the establishment in Afghanistan too being Pro -Pak , I don't see any political friction as well...

I remember Bangladesh fans and media desperately seeking a forced rivalry with India back during 2015 or so (when they won the ODI series against us) but then they went on to lose like 12 games consecutively against us for the next 4 years and it fizzled down completely. I guess the same will happen for this so called rivalry as well.

There is no rivalry between Afghanistan and Pakistan. The two countries have a long history of hostile behaviour between each other due to border issues and geopolitics. The Afghan players reflect this on the cricket field due to their immaturity.Afghans are more volatile compared to Pakistanis. They have a rough time since 1940 due to civil war, invasions by foreign powers and tribalism so one can understand their behaviour. Many Afghans have been traumatised by unending wars

With all due respect, Afghanistan team remind me of Bangladeshof the past, in so far as, win a couple of games and think of themselves as big fish.

It takes more than a couple of wins to be classed amongst the top teams.

Afghanistan is nothing like the Bangladesh team of the past.

The Bangladesh of the past was always a terrible team. They lacked in batting and bowling. If there was a series against them, teams would win 5-0 easily. Bangladesh would manage 1 win in 20 games against a top side.

Afghanistan is a quality side and when it comes to the top 8 teams, it lies in the 7th or 8th position. They have defeated Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and other teams aswell. Heck, they have defeated Pakistan aswell in a T20 series.

Just because we dont like their fans, doesnt mean we should be taking credit away from their team. Yes they got all out for 59 yesterday, but so have many teams in the past. They had Pakistan all out for 209 in 2023. The team only needs to develop its batting and find a few pacers.

Afghanistan doesnt even get to play home matches yet they are doing quite well with the limited resources they have got. THis team has rised from affiliate levels. And with a political crises and limited funds they are still amongst the top 8 teams in the world.

Afghans raise their game to next level to be in the match against Pakistan 95% of time and in the end manage to lose it.

Bangladesh has more resources and better cricket structure but it took it a long time to find decent players.BD now has decent spinners, batters and fast bowlers. However they lack confidence.Afghans have lots of young takent(if you believe their ages on paper).Their spinners are top class.Their batsmen are ok too.The problem with them is that they don’t have enough experience of playing top sides. The don’t understand the match situation and many a time give away their wickets. They play ODIs like T20. They can get away with aggressive batting in T20 but in longer versions these tactics don’t work against good bowling sides.

There is no denying that India is a superior force in world cricket compared to Bangladesh but just wanted to point out that your statement is factually incorrect. Since and including that series out of the last 10 ODIs - the head to head does read 6-4 in India's favour but interestingly both the Bilateral series in 2015 and 2022 were won by Bangladesh. So if I were to spin it positively in Bangladesh's favour - one may say that India has not beaten Bangladesh in an ODI bilateral series in 8 years. ;)

I just saw the scorecard for the 2nd ODI...

Must have been (another) Pakistan-Afghanistan Thriller!!!

If all the fights between fans are stopped, then Pakistan-Afghanistan matches would be great for PCB

As per media report after the game ended, Shaheen Afridi did not want to shake hands with the Afghan players.

As Shaheen walked back, skipper Babar Azam called him back and asked him to join the handshake.

babar need to act and leave this achaa bacha(sportsmen spirit) nonsense .Our players need to taught each and every rule of cricket and also shouldn't be any extra friendly with any opponent. It should be give respect and have respect

immature stuff from shaheen(If it is for shadab runout)

Whoa? I didn't follow the recent India and Bang series but this is surprising...then again maybe not. India have an ageing ODI outfit.

It's not really a fight between fans. It is particularly Afghan fans attacking Pakistani fans, in particular in expat locations.

It is a rivalry. The way Pakistan celebrated

Obviously, the Afghans broke the spirit of the game (I thought it was fine) and were really giving it to the Pak players. On top of all that they won a thriller so it meant a lot in the moment.

In the grand scheme no one will remember this while people still remember Pak beating India in India in 2012 (I think was 2012) or the CT final or the T20 win etc etc

This is as much a rivalry as an ant is a rival to the shoe.

Great to get a rivalry going. It will help both countries and keep both competitive. It just needs to stay a competitive rivalry, rather becoming toxic and hostile

Just saw the video of players shaking hand again.

I think fareed ahmad and naseem shah didnt shake hands. And fareed barked something to naseem, imam heard this and said something back.

@MenInG do share video here.

I think that is what babar was refering back to maybe.

Damn, afghans get so upset when we defeat them

Please see

A rivalry but a embarrassing rivalry should be dispatching afgh like in the first odi not taking games to the last ball.

I take it taking on aus sa in there own back yards is a step too far for this Pak team.

Guys stay on sports - no need to bring in Religion.

Nope. Its not in this video. When naseem and imam were walking in. In came fareed ahmad.

Babar was behind and thats what babar was ponting to nabi.

OK let me know if you see a link via PM And we will add here

Rivalry is fine especially as we neighbours but it becomes hostile, rude and agressive. Leeds 2019 and Asia cup 2022 were prime examples of the Afghan players being riled up which then ends up with fans becoming hostile.

Leeds 2019, I was there with my young nephews and niece and the Afghan fans that day were atrociously behaved. The Afghan players need to behave better, call out there own fans and call for calm.

It is merely a game of cricket!

We do have a rivalry with India too but during matches against Afghanistan they tends to display an unnecessary level of aggression.

With the Indian fans supporting Afghanistan, I expect the Afg v Pak encounter in the World Cup to be a very interesting one.

I don't think there is any rivalry between the two teams. Afghanistan does bring it's A game against Pakistan (which goes missing against all others, especially India). I believe it's Pakistan who doesn't take the games as serious, hence they keep getting rescued by Naseem and keep taking games down to the wire.

Forceful rivalry based on political stance of one side isn't really rivalry. General population of Pakistan sees Afghan as their brothers and sisters so we don't really feel the same.

Afghanistan keeps getting stronger and has some really good players so it will sure be great to have another super competitive cricketing nation.

The Pakistan-Afghanistan cricket rivalry is known for intense competition on the field, fueled by historical and geopolitical factors, making it a compelling clash in the world of cricket. Today, teams will write another chapter in their rivalry book.

Afghanistan has only won a few T20s but ODI are different ball game. I don't think Afghanistan ever won an odi against pakistan.

Afghanistan is my 2nd favorite team. Always support them but against india.
Already hurting from the loss to bangladesh, need a cheerful day for the pathans

Huge Rivalry it is, AFG seem to have some vengeance or animosity towards us, another chapter will be written after the crowd troubles and fighting which happened in Sharjah and England in previous games

Afghanistan finally beated Pakistan. Well deserve and mature batting by Afghans. Now no more stupid statements by Rameez Raja that how the Afghans are desperate to beat Pakistan.

Loved the way Afghanistan played. Went with 4 spinners, and than destroyed Pakistan by playing conventional cricket.

Today they were mature, they didnt throw a single wicket, they batted by the runrate and this time they waited for Babar make mistakes, instead of them selves making mistakes.

This time it was not Afghanistan who were desperate, but Pakistan who were all over the place.

And this humiliation belongs to babar azam. Well done Afghanistan. Well done. Hope they can make the semis

So where are those that used to say its not a rivalry as Pakistan dominates?

They not only gor their first odi win, but they got it in a world cup

What a time for Afghanistan to win finally. Very sloppy fielding, bowling and captain. Sure, Afghanistan played really well, but Pakistan was just poor to not put any pressure. It's not about losing or winning, but it was a one sided match.

Afghan Ratna for you congratulations Afghanistan no.1 fan, I hope you donned their Jersey and roam in streets that Afghanistan won against Pakistan

Come on no need to be snarky.

Looks like a few still have the ego even after this rubbing of 8 wickets.

Would be hilarious if afghanistan has more wins in this wc than pakistan

I hope they will ban Afghan spectators from entering the 3rd T20I
