Pakistan celebrated Haris Raufs birthday with Scotland. Beat that India....

Won't be surprised if they make up a mystery birthday of Varun Chakravarthy tomorrow in the Namibian dressing room.

India did this in the 2007 WC after Bangladesh shocked us. Rahul Dravid took Tamim Iqbal and a few others for dinner and even gave one of them his bat :Dah

Dravid is one of the classiest men of cricket. And is very low key about it. This is one reason I fear once he assumes the head coach position formally, the conferences and the Indian media won't be too keen on him for his non spicy statements and may even ridicule him when results will go wrong.

Yeah and the best part about this was he didn't share this story. I heard it during the 2011 or 2015 WC as part of a video snippet with Tamim.

Personally, I think Pakistan are going overboard with their spirit of cricket stuff. I didn't like laughing and joking amongst themselves and with Scotland during the game.

This used to happen in the past as well - with accompanying cliches like boys are enjoying cricket and the team is united etc.

They will be caught unawares by Aussies who will stare them down, will not respond to their smiles and players like Warner, Starc will scowl at them at every opportunity. Pakistan won't be ready for this, and confidence is half the battle.

Still time to get back to basics of sport. Play hard. Remember how they were before India. Relaxed but focused.

Pakistani players don't really share a good bond with Australian players. They aren't going to be smiling at them atleast till the end of the match.

Pakistan is having friendly nature with the associate nations. Being in the face of associate nations looks really really bad.

Team India honours Ajaz Patel, gifts him signed jersey for perfect 10 in Mumbai Test

Virat Kohli-led Team India honoured Ajaz Patel for his historic achievement and gifted him a signed jersey after the end of the Mumbai Test match. The left-arm spinner took a 10-for in the first innings of India's innings.

Ajaz Patel achieved a historic feat on day 2 of the Mumbai Test match against India as he became only the 3rd bowler to take a 10-for in an innings. The left-arm spinner pouched all 10 wickets up for grabs in India's first innings and completed the 10-for with the wicket of Mohammed Siraj on day 2.

Ajaz bowled tirelessly and sent down a total of 47.5overs. The Indian batsmen batted for 109.5 overs across 2 days. Ajaz followed it up with 4 wickets in India's second innings and finished the Test match with a total of 14 scalps.

Following his heroics, Team India honoured the spinner for the historic achievement. The Virat Kohli-led side gifted a signed jersey to Ajaz, who was born in Mumbai in 1988. R Ashwin, who lauded the spinner after he scalped his 10th wicket, gifted him the jersey on the team's behalf during an interview for bcci.tv.

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) also honoured Ajaz with a scoresheet and a memento. The spinner decided to hand over the match ball and a jersey for the upcoming MCA museum.

While this was his first tour of India with the national team, he has been to India earlier as a player and has bowled in Mumbai Indians' nets.

India hand NZ 372-run defeat in Mumbai Test

Talking of the Mumbai Test match, the home team conquered NZ and handed them a 372-run defeat to win the series 1-0. The home team gained the upper hand after bowling out NZ for a mere total of 62, gaining a lead of 263 runs. The team management decided against enforcing the follow-on and India put up a total of 276/7 on the board, setting up a huge target of 540 for the Black Caps.

Very odd.

As if there were other such nominations for the Pakistan team.

Would have been better to just say a special award for this gesture and not make up a new award!

New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell has been named the recipient of the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award after his gesture in the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup semi-final against England in Abu Dhabi.

Mitchell becomes the fourth New Zealand player to win the award, following the footsteps of Daniel Vettori, Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson. Mitchell wins the award for refusing to take a single in the high-pressure T20 World Cup semi-final against England in Abu Dhabi on November 10, 2021.

"It’s an honour to receive the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award," Mitchell said. "To be part of that T20 World Cup in UAE was an amazing experience, and to receive an award like this is pretty cool.

"It’s something that we pride ourselves on as New Zealanders, the way we go about playing our cricket, and yes, the Spirit of Cricket side. Personally, I felt I got in the way and we wanted to win on our own terms, and didn’t want to be controversial in such a big game.

"It paid off in the long run that we won the game. Looking back, it all happened pretty quickly."

This spirit is described in the preamble to the laws of cricket: "Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact that it should be played not only within its laws but also within the spirit of the game. Any action which is seen to abuse this spirit causes injury to the game itself."

The preamble goes on to say: "The spirit of the game involves respect for:

* Your opponents
* Your own captain and team
* The role of the umpires
* The game's traditional values

What happened

In the first semi-final of the 2021 ICC Men's 2021 T20 World Cup at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, England and New Zealand were locked in a tight battle to reach the summit clash. Batting first, England had posted a competitive 166/4 on the board courtesy of Moeen Ali's half-century.

New Zealand were on course for the run chase with a well-settled Mitchell establishing a partnership with James Neesham, who was in blistering form. The incident occurred on the first ball of the 18th over bowled by Adil Rashid, with the score at 133/4.

Neesham bashed the ball down the ground and it would have been an easy single. But Mitchell, at the non-striker's end, refused to take the run, conceding that he had impeded Rashid – in a high-pressure chase, with a place in the World Cup final at stake, Mitchell's gesture oozed class.

Nasser Hussain, who was live on commentary during the contest, was full of praise for Mitchell saying, "That is very good. That is so New Zealand, it really is. So easy to take a run there. But the non-strike said, 'No, I've got in the way of Adil.' Anything sums up New Zealand cricket – it was that."

Mitchell, explaining why he refused to take the single, added: "It was a pretty tight game against England in that semi-final, with only a few overs to go. Neesh (Jimmy Neesham) hit a single down to long-off I think it was, and I felt like I’d obstructed Rashid from getting to the ball.

"The game that we play, we play it because we love it. Yes, we want to win as much as we can, but we don’t want that to come about from doing things that go against the values of cricket. Spirit of Cricket is vitally important. It sets a platform for kids in the future, who will go about playing the game in the right way.

"At the end of the day, it is a game, it’s something that we love. So obviously we’re so lucky to do that."

Eventually, New Zealand ended up winning the contest, chasing the total down with an over to spare. Mitchell who opened the batting proved to be the match-winner, playing a memorable knock of 72* in only 47 deliveries, hitting the winning runs.

New Zealand would end up as the runners-up in the tournament, falling short at the final hurdle against Australia who won the match by eight wickets.

What the heck is wrong with Fawad? I mean, you are not even batting, why the heck do you have to hold the bat handle?

Saw a nice example tonight — spirit of cricket.

A shot for six by Dawid Malan, hits the boundary bumper and the umpires weren’t sure whether it was 4 or 6. (It was 6)

Maharaj on the opposing team, the closest fielder, sportingly informs the umpires himself that it is 6.

Regarding Pak and Afg, I think not all Afghan players hate Pakistan. The likes of Nabi and some others seem to have good relations with Pakistani players. There are obviously some of our guys who hate Afg as well.

Afg supporters though are a different story altogether.

A lot of Afg and Pak youth though recently have been brought up with hate towards each other.

The ICC Spirit of Cricket Award is annually awarded by the ICC to recognise the player or team upholding the spirit of the game.

Nepal wicketkeeper Aasif Sheikh has been named the recipient of the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award 2022 for his decision not to run out Andy McBrine after the Irish star tripped while attempting a run.

Aasif thus becomes the first player from Nepal to win the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award.

What happened

Nepal and Ireland faced off in the sixth match of the Quadrangular series in Oman on 14 February 2022. Ireland were put in to bat first but Nepal had the scoring rate on a leash by picking up regular wickets.

At 113/8 at the end of 18 overs, Ireland needed a late flourish with the bat to post a fighting total.

Kamal Singh Airee was tasked with bowling the 19th over. Off the third ball, Mark Adair went for a big heave over leg-side but the ball hit his leg and dropped towards the leg side. The bowler, in his attempt to retrieve the ball, collided with non-striker Andy McBrine, as a result of which the Irish batter tripped and fell halfway on the pitch.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">A heart-warming <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/SpiritOfCricket?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#SpiritOfCricket</a> moment from Nepal's wicket-keeper Aasif Sheikh 👏<br><br>Follow the upcoming T20 World Cup Qualifier A live on <a href="https://twitter.com/FanCode?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@FanCode</a> and <a href="https://t.co/CPDKNxoJ9v">https://t.co/CPDKNxoJ9v</a> (in select regions).<br><br>All you need to know 👉 <a href="https://t.co/XQgeYSj7Z7">https://t.co/XQgeYSj7Z7</a> <a href="https://t.co/1JoX7qRube">pic.twitter.com/1JoX7qRube</a></p>— ICC (@ICC) <a href="https://twitter.com/ICC/status/1493904109568765952?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">February 16, 2022</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Airee quickly got to the ball and threw it to keeper Aasif Sheikh, at which point McBrine got back up but was well short of his crease. However, Aasif decided not to whip the bails off, a gesture that received widespread recognition across the cricketing fraternity.

Ireland ended up posting 127 and Nepal fell 17 runs short as they were bowled out for 111.

For the gesture, Aasif Sheikh bagged the Spirit of Cricket Award.

This spirit is described in the preamble to the laws of cricket: "Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact that it should be played not only within its laws but also within the spirit of the game. Any action which is seen to abuse this spirit causes injury to the game itself."

However, this didn’t go down well with Wasim Akram, who slammed Pakistan skipper for taking the jersey right after an embarrassing defeat.

Babar should have not met Kohli in the ground. This was not the situation to meet Kohli openly. Babar should have taken the shirt privately from Virat, Wasim said on a local channel.

I am sorry for the Boos tonight Dear Babar on behalf of all my fellow Bharatiyas.

You are an absolute gentleman, a hard worker and a great ambassador of the game.

But, this is a rivalry and you played at the nationalist Bharat’s political hub , Ahmedabad in front of a hostile nationalist crowd.

It’s nothing personal and we wish you well.

No hard feelings

Wasim Akram today mentioned in his show about Sachin’s 1999 run out - and that triggered some very unpleasant memories. Imagine Sachin almost competing his 3rd run, bat hovering in the air past the crease (but not yet grounded) and then he crashes into Shoaib Akhter (both looking at the ball), goes off balance and in that split second a direct throw from the deep that runs him out.

Wasim Akram was then asked twice by the umpire whether he wants to recall but each time he declined. He claims now that he would make decision of calling somebody or not depending on the math situation. Was that dismissal in the spirit of the game?

Former Australian all-rounder Simon O’Donnell has taken issue with New Zealand’s sportsmanship towards Virat Kohli in their semi-final loss at the Cricket World Cup.

India claimed a 70-run win to book their place in the final and move one step closer to lifting the trophy for the third time.

Batting first, the hosts piled on a total of 397 and while New Zealand batted well in reply, they could only manage 327 in the run chase and fell short.

Long seen as the nice guys of international cricket, New Zealand also have a reputation for always being the bridesmaid and falling agonisingly short of glory at World Cups.

They lost in the final at the last two ODI World Cups, including on boundary countback in 2019, and also suffered defeated in the 2021 T20 World Cup final.

The Kiwis were once again gracious in defeat and O’Donnell believes they acted too sportingly towards Kohli during his innings.

The Indian superstar was battling cramp as he approached his recordbreaking 50th century that saw him pass Sachin Tendulkar as the player with the most ODI hundreds.

As he hobbled around the crease, several New Zealand players checked on Kohli’s welfare.

“I had a problem a couple of times last night. Virat Kohli gets cramp, they’re heading for 400 and blokes go over and help him,” O’Donnell said on SEN on Thursday.

“Why would you go and help Virat Kohli when he had a cramp? When they’re heading for 400. In a World Cup semi-final.

“Spirit of the game is playing within the laws. Virat Kohli is tearing your country apart and you want to go over and give him a hand.”

O’Donnell, who played six Tests and 87 ODIs for Australia, was especially bothered by the Kiwis approaching Kohli and picking up his bat for him.

“Under no circumstances should you have gone within 20 metres of Virat Kohli when he had a cramp,” he said.

“He threw his bat away and one of the Kiwis went and picked it up. ‘Go and pick your own bat up while you’ve got a sore hamstring and a cramp. Stop hitting us for sixes and fours’.

“That’s not a big deal. That’s not outside the spirit of the game. It’s being competitive and saying, ‘OK, he’s being physically challenged, why are we assisting him to stay physically OK to belt the cr*p out of us?’

“I don’t get it, I just don’t get it. Stuff helping him out, he’s made 50 one-day hundreds, why help him make the 50th against you in a World Cup semi-final? Give me a spell.”

Several New Zealand players congratulated Kohli on his century after he was eventually dismissed and captain Kane Williamson paid tribute to his rival after the loss.

Williamson hailed record-breaking Kohli as “the best” batsman in the world and warned India’s rivals that the superstar is “getting better.”

“That’s something quite special, I think if you play 50 games, some people would call that a great career,” said Williamson.

“But to get 50 hundreds … and not just that, actually the way he goes about it, it’s actually about winning games for his team.”

The 33-year-old added: “I mean he’s the best, isn’t he? And he seems to be getting better, which is a worry for the opposition all around the world.” Shami struck throughout the innings on his way to returning the best figures by any bowler in a World Cup semi-final and, importantly ended a threatening third-wicket stand of 181 between Daryl Mitchell (134) and Williamson (69) when the Black Caps skipper was caught at deep square leg.

“That blue machine keeps rolling and they were too good for us today … They thoroughly deserve their win,” said Williamson.

“He’s a phenomenal player and just the ultimate competitor, he loves the occasion, and he’s been outstanding for us throughout this whole tournament,” said Williamson.

India, unbeaten in 10 games at the tournament, will now face either Australia or South Africa in Sunday’s final in Ahmedabad.

“They’re the best team in the world and they’re all playing their best cricket,” said Williamson.

“The way they’ve played throughout this tournament has been incredible. They haven’t missed a beat … I’ve got no doubt they’ll go into that next match full of confidence.”

Criticised For Helping Virat Kohli Recover From Cramps In Cricket World Cup Semi-final, New Zealand Star's Firm Response

Inda's triumphant performance against New Zealand in the Cricket World Cup 2023 semi-final earned the home team plenty of plaudits as they progressed to the final of the tournament. While New Zealand put in a valiant effort, they couldn't break the resolve of Rohit Sharma's men. However, a bizarre remark came from a former Australian cricketer, saying the Kiwis shouldn't have helped India's Virat Kohli when he was suffering from cramps en route to his 50th ODI hundred. New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell has responded to the comment.

Former Australia all-rounder Scott O'Donnell questioned the Kiwis' sportsmanship, saying such a gesture wasn't needed for a player like Kohli who was tearing the Kiwi team during the semi-final match in Wankhede.

"I think that's something we really pride ourselves on as Black Caps and as New Zealanders. We want to play cricket in a way that suits us as a country and how we want to see our kids grow up and play the game themselves," Mitchell said in a chat with reporters as the team left Mumbai late on Thursday.

"We'll keep playing cricket the way we do as Kiwis, and hopefully the rest of the world can respect us and how we go about our day-to-day life, not only on the field but off it as well. It's something that we're really proud of, so we'll just keep being Black Caps and doing what we're doing."

When asked about the task ahead, Mitchell said that the team is already looking forward to the 2-match Test series against Bangladesh.

"That's the nature of international sport these days," he asserted. "We'll show up, we love Test cricket, it means a hell of a lot to this group. We'll be ready to go come the first day of that Test and wear that black cap again."

I think the spirit of cricket is something that every player and fan should uphold and cherish. It is not just about following the rules, but also playing with grace, dignity, and respect. Although it is a personal choice if you want to do something for the opposition player but still if anybody is doing something nice, then he should be acknowledged for that. what do you think?
