[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Wriddhiman Saha announce retirement from all forms of cricket [Post Updated #205]

FGS he said pant cant bat in tests even though icc gave him an award for the same.

And
Lol at 75% failures. Do you even know how to calculate or are siddle, Halewood, bell, fizz not successful players for their country.

Another dumb reply by you but I am not surprised. None of these players were the chosen ones like your fav boy Pant. His career is going to follow the path of Umar Akmal. Yiu can bookmark this post. :inti

Indian wicketkeeper batsman Wriddhiman Saha, who is recovering from a finger surgery, has been asked to skip Bengal’s next Ranji clash against Delhi to keep himself ready for the upcoming Test series in New Zealand.

The 35-year-old sustained a fracture on the ring finger of his right hand during the historic Day/Night Test Test against Bangladesh in Kolkata in November and consequently underwent a surgery in Mumbai.

“Wriddhi will not be available for Delhi match (at Eden Gardens from Sunday). I think the Board (BCCI) has said no to him,” Bengal coach Arun Lal said after it scripted an innings and 303 win over Hyderabad to brighten its qualifying hopes.

“It’s great to have him but it will not make any difference. In any case we have got a winning side. It’s okay it would have been for just one game,” Lal said.

Saha had his rehab at the National Cricket Academy. The two-Test series in New Zealand begins on February 21.

Earlier, the BCCI had also made exception for India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah as he did not have to prove his fitness during the Ranji Trophy match between Gujarat and Kerala and straightway made a comeback from a lower back injury in the T20I series against Sri Lanka.

Bengal will also miss its skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran and pacer Ishan Porel who have been drafted into the India A side for the series in New Zealand.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha’s saga of picking up injuries continued as he has been diagnosed with a hamstring tear which is sure to raise questions about his availability for the upcoming tour of Australia.

It will now depend on what call BCCI mandarins take considering that physio Nitin Patel’s medical reports have of late come under scanner due to divergent views of the IPL franchises. Saha had stretched his groin while batting against Delhi Capitals in the second leg of the IPL but then played against Mumbai Indians in the 14th and final round game where he must have picked up a tear while fighting the earlier niggle.

“Wriddhiman Saha has a hamstring tear,” SRH skipper David Warner confirmed the nature of injury during the toss before Sunday’s Qualifier 2 against Delhi Capitals.

However, the degree of the tear is still not clear. It is understood that if Saha has a grade 1 tear, which normally takes four weeks of rest and rehabilitation, then he would be boarding the flight to Australia with the first Test starting on December 17. In case, he has a Grade 2 tear, he will not be boarding the flight to Australia as he would need two months minimum to recover.

However, with two wicketkeepers already in the squad (Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson), India may not seek for another stumper. In order to shore up their batting, India prefer Pant in overseas conditions and Saha in home conditions where a better keeper becomes necessity. During MSK Prasad’s tenure as the chief selector, Andhra lad Kona Bharat was considered as a third red-ball option behind Pant and Saha.

The BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has no doubt wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha, currently nursing a double hamstring injury, will be fit for India's four-test series in Australia beginning next month.

Saha, considered technically the best wicketkeeper in India, injured both the hamstrings during the Indian Premier League and missed the playoffs in the United Arab Emirates.

The BCCI last week said it would take a late call on Saha's availability for the tour which begins with the first of six short-form internationals on November 27 in Sydney.

"I think people don't know how the BCCI works," Ganguly told The Week magazine, dismissing criticism of the board's handling of player injuries.

"The BCCI trainers, physio and Wriddhi himself know that he has two hamstring issues."

"Wriddhi is travelling to Australia because he will be fit for tests. He is not part of the shorter formats."

Rishabh Pant is the other wicket-keeper in India's test squad.

Confusion was also rife on Rohit Sharma's hamstring injury which the opener had sustained during the IPL.

Rohit was initially considered unfit for the Australia tour, but continued to play, leading the Mumbai Indians to their record fifth IPL title in Dubai.

He was subsequently brought back to the test squad.

"Rohit is still 70 per cent (fit)," Ganguly said.

"That is why he is still not picked for the ODIs and T20s Down Under. He has been added to the test squad."

The four-test series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will begin with a day-night match at Adelaide from Dec. 17.

Flat pitches should had taken Pant, wonder if the bowlers force Saha to be part of it considering Pant’s keeping.

Pant is a great wicketkeeper against pace as evidenced by his record.

His time will come. Let Saha play whatever few tests he is going to play before he hangs his boot. Pant can learn a thing or two from Saha in wicketkeeping as well. Win win situation for both the players. :inti

Pant will get his chances. His time will come. At this point, India are going through a phase where they are facing a problem of plenty when playing at home and plenty of problems when playing abroad. They are finding it hard to balance the right chord though.

Saha's age is being referred to more often than not. To be fair to him, his reflexes are very good. I was watching the pink ball practice match where Saha took a very good diving catch while not donning the wicket keeping gloves.

As long as he produces such performances, age would just be a number in his case.

Also his batting performance in the first match was very good - shielding the tail and scoring runs against a very good attack. That should have worked in his favor.

In a major development, senior wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha has opted out of Bengal's Ranji Trophy campaign after being categorically told that he will not be picked for India's two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, starting in Mohali on March 4. It is understood that the new team management has conveyed to the national selectors that 37-year-old Saha, considered as one of world's premier glovesmen, isn't one for the future. Rishabh Pant has already been confirmed preferred keeper for the next few years and Kona Bharat showed great glove-work in Kanpur Test against New Zealand.

"Wriddhiman has been categorically told by influential people in the team management that they want to move on and create some new back-ups alongside Rishabh Pant," a senior BCCI source privy to developments told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"He was explained that he won't be picked for the Sri Lanka Tests as it's time that Kona gets his share of exposure with the senior team "May be that's the reason, Wriddhiman had informed Cricket Association of Bengal president Abhishek Dalmiya and joint secretary Snehasish Ganguly that he would not play Ranji Trophy this season for 'personal reasons'.

"That's why the selectors didn't pick him as he was unavailable for selection," the source added.

Bengal selection committee, headed by Subhamoy Das, on the day named a 22-member squad, including two wicketkeeper batters Abhishek Porel and Shakir Habib Gandhi, for the group league phase.

"During meeting chairman of selectors Subhamoy had asked secretary and convenor of senior selection committee Snehasish Ganguly about Wriddhi's availability. They said that Wriddhi has informed that he shouldn't be considered for Bengal for Ranji Trophy for the season. It was a bit weird," a source close to Bengal team management said.

It is learnt that Saha, who is not a part of India's white-ball set up also did not attend a single session of Bengal's pre-season Ranji Trophy camp.

"It is understandable that if he is not going to play for India anymore in Tests, then why would he have motivation to play Ranji Trophy after playing 40 Tests.

"While he might be feeling low, but at 37 and half years of age, it is only natural that team management won't want him as Pant's understudy," he said.

Saha has played 40 Tests and scored 1353 runs with three hundreds and an average of less than 30 which became his undoing. He however had 104 dismissals behind stumps, 92 catches and 12 stumpings.

Wriddhiman Saha pulled out of Bengal’s Ranji Trophy squad after being told that he would not be a part of the Indian squad for the home Test series against Sri Lanka. This has created a lot of debate around Saha’s future and whether he is thinking about possible retirement.

Meanwhile, in a recent interview with Sportstar, Saha clarified that he has no plans of retirement just yet and that he has taken a break from cricket. He is 37 at the moment and has the upcoming IPL auction in his sight.

“People take a break to have family time or for other personal reasons, even Virat Kohli took paternity leave. So, why are questions being raised when I decided to take a break from Ranji Trophy” responded Wriddhiman Saha when questioned on retirement.

Further speaking about retirement, Saha said that retirement will be entirely his personal decision. He last played in the Kanpur Test for India against New Zealand scoring an unbeaten 61 in the second innings of the Test match.

“These are personal decisions. Virat stepping down as captain was his personal decision, so similarly my retirement will be my personal decision. Everyone has a start and an end.

“But I will not retire just because people have been talking about it. If the team doesn’t like my performance and if they drop me is something I can accept. But I will not leave if people push me,” said Saha.

Saha is well and truly the second-choice wicketkeeper for India at the moment. In the upcoming IPL auction, he can be a player of interest with several teams looking for a good wicketkeeper-batsman. So far the wicketkeeper-batsman has played nine ODIs and 40 Test matches for India.

Wriddhiman Saha shocked the cricket fraternity on Saturday evening by sharing a disturbing screenshot of a personal chat showing an unnamed journalist threatening him. This incident occurred after Saha was dropped from the Indian team for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.

Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has jumped to Saha's defense and urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to protect players. Harbhajan tagged top office-bearers of the BCCI such as Jay Shah, Sourav Ganguly, and Arun Thakur while replying to Saha's explosive tweet.

Harbhajan wrote, "Wridhi you just name the person so that the cricket community knows who operates like this. Else even the good ones will be put under suspicion.. What kind of journalism is this ? bcci @Wriddhipops @JayShah @SGanguly99 thakurArunS. players should be protected."

Earlier in the day, legendary Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag also offered Saha his full support. Sehwag had used some strong words to describe the person under the scanner for sending Saha such messages.

After his axing from the Indian team, Saha was left unimpressed with the decision. In the aftermath of the squad announcement by the Chetan Sharma-led selection committee, the 37-year-old revealed that coach Rahul Dravid informed him after the South Africa series that they are looking for youngsters and asked him to contemplate retirement. He further explained that chief selector Chetan Sharma called him and let him know that he will not be considered for selection from the Sri Lanka series.

Senior Indian glovesman Wriddhiman Saha, who is under fire to reveal the name of an Indian journalist who threatened him over a chat, has broken his silence amidst pressure from all corners to reveal the identity. Saha, who was recently dropped from Indian squads, took to social media to announce that while he was hurt with the journalist's message, he won't reveal the identity of the journalist.

"I was hurt and offended. I thought not to tolerate such kind of behaviour and didn’t want anyone to go through these kind of bullying. I decided I will go out and expose the chat in public eye, but not his/her name," Saha wrote on Twitter.

He went on to add that his nature is not like he would want to end somebody's career.

"My nature isnt such that I will harm anyone to the extent of ending someone’s career. So on grounds of humanity looking at his/her family, I am not exposing the name for the time being. But if any such repetition happens, I will not hold back," Saha added.

A bit immature by Saha.

Surely there were better ways of taking this forward.

He could texted that journalist to say **** off or something.

The journalist in question (boria majumdar) has a toxic reputation and has behaved similiarly with other cricketers, hence the outrage. Some say he is a chamzcha of Ganguly.

Indian Cricketers' Association condemns 'threat' to Wriddhiman Saha, issues strong statement

The ICA also welcomed BCCI's decision to probe into the matter and take strict action against the reporter.

The Indian Cricketers' Association on Tuesday released a strong statement, saying that the body strongly condemned the "threatening message" sent by a journalist to veteran Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha and added that if the BCCI cancels the reporter's accreditation or access to the board, they will support it.

On the evening that the 37-year-old cricketer was dropped from the Indian Test team for the home series against Sri Lanka, Saha received a message from a journalist who forced him for an interview before threatening him. The cricketer later shared screenshots of the messages, lashing out at the "respected journalist".

"We acknowledge the fact that the media plays a very important role both in the growth of our game and the players but there's always a line that must never be crossed. What has happened in Saha's case is totally unacceptable and we call for the respective press organisations too to take up the matter and ensure such things are not repeated," ICA President Ashok Malhotra said in an official statement.

The ICA also welcomed BCCI's decision to probe into the matter and take strict action against the reporter.

"We would offer our full support to Saha at this juncture. No player should be subjected to such 'threats' from anyone in the media or elsewhere. We urge the media to also come out in support of Saha and ensure that these sorts of issues don't crop up again. Any interaction between a player and the media has always to be voluntary," Hitesh Majumdar, the ICA Secretary said.

Earlier on Monday, BCCI Treasurer Arun Dhumal told PTI that the board will ask Saha to reveal the identity of the journalist and the context in which those messages were sent.

However, the veteran cricketer wishes to remain tight-lipped on the matter if and when asked by the BCCI, explaining that his purpose was to expose the act on social media and not harm anyone's career.

“I haven’t received any communication from the BCCI yet. If they ask me to reveal the name (of the journalist), I would tell them it was never my intention to harm somebody’s career, to pull a person down. That’s why I didn’t reveal the name in my tweet. That’s not the teaching of my parents. The main purpose of my tweet was to expose the fact that there’s someone in the media who does such things, disrespecting a player’s wish,” he told The Indian Express.

New Delhi, Feb 24: The BCCI in all likelihood will ask veteran keeper Wriddhiman Saha about his recent outburst after being dropped from the Indian team as it is in violation of protocols to be followed by a centrally contracted cricketer.

The annual central contracts that players sign (Saha is in Group B with annual retainership of Rs 3 crore) has a clause 6.3, which apparently he has violated.

The clause 6.3 of players’ central contract states: “Player shall not make any comments about the game, officials, incidents that happened in the game, use of technology, selection matters or any other matter related to the game which is in opinion of the BCCI is adverse to and /or not in the interest of the game, team or BCCI in any media….”

The specific comments that Saha made across media is on his selection and his private conversations with head coach Rahul Dravid, Chetan Sharma and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly.

The 37-year-old, whose international career ended after he was told by the team management that they wanted to groom a younger keeper, has since then come out in public domain, putting out allegedly “threatening” whatsapp messages from a journalist without taking names.

While the BCCI had asked Saha to name the journalist, the parent body is apparently unhappy about his comments where he has made a private conversation with Dravid public and also spoke about a message sent by the BCCI president.

“Yes, there is a possibility that BCCI could ask Wriddhiman as to how he spoke on selection matters being a centrally contracted cricketer,” Arun Dhumal told PTI.

“As far as the president is concerned, he had tried to motivate him. The board might like to know what made him go public with his dressing room conversations with coach Dravid.”

So will BCCI serve a formal showcause notice or ask him verbally about the issue?

“We haven’t yet decided on the matter. We are all busy but a call will be taken on a few days,” he said.

Many people in BCCI believe that Saha should have refrained from making his conversations with Dravid public as it has certainly dented his image a bit.

“Rahul Dravid said that he is not “hurt” but wanted to clear communicate with the player. It’s a private conversation and even if he was hurt, he should have kept quiet. Dravid became a bigger person as what Saha did was show the head coach in bad light,” a senior BCCI official said.

Let's be honest here, what exactly was Saha expecting? He is no Gilchrist or Sangakara, or even Dhoni (even though he was not great in test). Pant is the future, move aside and concentrate on other cricket-related stuffs.

Wriddhiman Saha Speaks To BCCI Probe Panel Over Controversy Involving Unnamed Journalist

Veteran Indian wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, who has alleged that he was intimidated by a journalist for not giving an interview, on Saturday said he has revealed all the details to a BCCI committee probing the matter.

Veteran Indian wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, who has alleged that he was intimidated by a journalist for not giving an interview, on Saturday said he has revealed all the details to a BCCI committee probing the matter. A three-member committee on Saturday met Saha here on Saturday to probe into the 37-year-old's allegations against the unnamed journalist. "I have told the committee everything I know. I have shared all the details with them. I can't tell you much right now. BCCI has asked me not to talk about the meeting outside as they will answer all your queries," Saha told reporters after appearing before the committee in New Delhi.

A centrally-contracted player, Saha had posted a series of tweets on February 23 to make the charge, following which the BCCI initiated a probe into the matter.

It all began after the 37-year-old was ignored for the ongoing Sri Lanka series.

Saha, in an outburst, revealed some classified dressing room conversations with head coach Rahul Dravid. He said that he was told by Dravid in South Africa that he was no longer in the scheme of things.

The wicketkeeper-batter also revealed how Chetan Sharma, the chairman of the national selection committee, told him that they were not considering him anymore.

Saha has recently been demoted to Group C of the BCCI central contracts list.

Following Wriddhiman Saha’s statement on Saturday evening, veteran Indian journalist Boria Majumdar took to Twitter and posted a video. In the video, Boria goes on to accuse the senior India wicketkeeper of doctoring the WhatsApp chats that he had made posted after not being picked for the Tests against Sri Lanka.

“There are always two sides to a story. @Wriddhipops has doctored, tampered screenshots of my WhatsApp chats which have damaged my reputation and credibility. I have requested the bcci for a fair hearing. My lawyers are serving @Wriddhipops a defamation notice. Let truth prevail.”Boria Majumdar tweeted.

Even when Saha spoke to the reporters today after meeting with the BCCI top brass, he did not mention the name specifically. He told the reporters that he has told everything to the BCCI during the meeting and would not like to comment further.

“I have told the committee everything I know. All the details I have shared with them. I can’t tell you much right now. BCCI has asked me not to talk anything outside about the meeting as they will answer all your queries,” Saha told reporters.

“I was hurt and offended. I thought not to tolerate such kind of behaviour and didn’t want anyone to go through this kind of bullying. I decided I will go out and expose the chat in the public eye, but not his/her name,”Saha’s earlier tweet that sparked the controversy.

Boria Majumdar likely to get two-year ban in Wriddhiman Saha case

Following his revelation, Saha received widespread support from the cricketing fraternity. Former India coach Ravi Shastri urged BCCI president Sourav Ganguly “to dive in”.

The Indian cricket board is likely to impose a two-year ban on talk show host Boria Majumdar after a three-member BCCI committee found him guilty of intimidating India wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha over an interview request.

“We will be informing all state units of the Indian cricket board to not allow him inside stadiums. He won’t be given media accreditation for home matches and we will also be writing to ICC to blacklist him. Players will be asked not to engage with him,” a top BCCI official told The Sunday Express on condition of anonymity.

Majumdar did not respond to phone calls or text messages on Saturday.

The issue came to light on February 19 this year, when the 37-year-old Bengal wicketkeeper shared a Twitter post that said: “After all of my contributions to Indian cricket… this is what I face from a so-called ‘Respected’ journalist! This is where journalism has gone.”

Saha also shared screenshots of purported messages that he had received. One of them said: “You did not call. Never again will I interview you. I don’t take insults kindly. And I will remember this.”

Former India coach Ravi Shastri urged BCCI president Sourav Ganguly “to dive in”.

Taking cognizance of the social media post, the BCCI formed a committee comprising vice-president Rajeev Shukla, treasurer Arun Dhumal and apex council member Prabhtej Bhatia to probe Saha’s allegation.

While deposing before the committee, Saha identified Majumdar and alleged that he was “bullied” for an interview.

Meanwhile, Majumdar accused the cricketer of “doctoring” the screenshots of the WhatsApp messages he had posted on Twitter and later shared with the committee.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on slapped two years ban on Control journalist Boria Majumdar for intimidating wicketkeeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha.

The development was confirmed by ANI, who tweeted: “BCCI issues order to ban journalist Boria Majumdar for two years for intimidating cricketer Wriddhiman Saha.”

A centrally-contracted player, Saha had posted a series of tweets on February 23 against the then unnamed journalist, who happened to be Majumdar.

Wriddhiman Saha's solid 67 not out after a top-class bowling performance set up Gujarat Titans' seven-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in the IPL on Sunday, securing a top-two finish in the team standings. Gujarat bowlers put up a clinical show to restrict CSK to a below-par 133/5 despite a fine half-century by Ruturaj Gaikwad. Saha, who struck eight boundaries and a six in his 57-ball knock, anchored the chase nicely to get Gujarat home in 19.1 overs. While CSK were already out of the play-off race, the win for Gujarat guarantees them a top-two finish on the points table in their debut season, providing them with two opportunities to reach the final.

Wriddhiman Saha broke his silence on his future as an Indian domestic cricketer. Confirming that he won't play for Bengal in the current edition even after being selected in the squad for the knockout stage, the wicketkeeper-batter said he is in talks with multiple associations but hasn't finalised his destination yet. The Cricket Association of Bengal tried its level best through president Avishek Dalmiya and head coach Arun Lal but were unable to change Saha's mind. The veteran stumper was miffed with the comments made by a CAB official questioning the right-hander's commitment to Bengal cricket last year.

Saha, who made his first-class debut for Bengal back in 2007, said he was "very sad" to take this decision after playing for the state for close to 15 years. But the 37-year-old who is still rated as one of India's best wicketkeepers said it was "disappointing" to hear "such comments" questioning his "integrity."

“For me, too, it is a very sad feeling that I have to go through something like this after playing for Bengal for so long. It is disappointing that people make such comments and question your integrity. As a player, I had never faced such a thing in the past, but now that it has happened, even I need to (move on),” Saha told Sportstar.

Saha has represented Bengal in 122 first-class matches and 102 List A games. He said he has already conveyed his decision of not playing for Bengal anymore to the CAB president but will meet him to complete the formation and also take the NoC.

“Since I had made up my mind that I won’t play for Bengal, I had informed (the Cricket Association of Bengal president Avishek Dalmiya) over phone. But I will meet him in person and finalise the formalities,” Saha added.

That he will turn up for a new team from next season is certain but Saha did not confirm his destitation. “I have spoken to a lot of people, but no decision has been taken yet. There is still time left for next season…” he said.

The right-hander played a crucial role at the top of the order for Gujarat Titans, who won IPL 2022. “I just went to the IPL to contribute to Gujarat Titans and help them win. I am glad that we won the title, but I am not thinking too much about what will happen next or what should have happened. My job was to perform and I just did that,” Saha added.

Wriddhiman Saha to retire from all forms of cricket after ongoing Ranji Trophy

Indian wicketkeeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket at the end of the ongoing Ranji Trophy season. The 40-year-old, renowned for his prowess behind the stumps and crucial knocks for India, took to social media on Sunday to share the news. Saha expressed his gratitude for a "cherished journey in cricket" and his commitment to making this final season for Bengal memorable.

Saha has had a distinguished career in Test cricket, playing 40 matches for India and scoring 1,353 runs, including three centuries. Known for his exceptional skills as a wicketkeeper, Saha became India's first-choice keeper-batsman following MS Dhoni's retirement from the game's longest format. He ranks just behind Dhoni and Rishabh Pant in terms of centuries scored by an Indian wicketkeeper in Tests. However, his last appearance in international cricket was in 2021 against New Zealand. Despite some resilient performances, Saha was sidelined when the new management under head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma decided to bring in KS Bharat as a backup to Pant.

Reflecting on his journey, Saha shared on X (formerly Twitter): "After a cherished journey in cricket, this season will be my last. I am honoured to represent Bengal one final time, playing only in the Ranji Trophy before I retire. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this incredible ride; your support has meant the world."

While Saha is set to play in the Ranji Trophy for Bengal, he won't be seen in next year's IPL. Not retained by Gujarat Titans, Saha also hasn't registered for the mega auction, a clear indication of his retirement from franchise cricket. A veteran of the Indian Premier League, Saha has played every season since its inception in 2008, representing Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and most recently, Gujarat Titans.

After spending 15 years representing Bengal in First-Class cricket, Saha made headlines last season when he transferred to Tripura. A dispute with a senior Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) official, who questioned his commitment to the team, pushed Saha to leave Bengal temporarily, despite an appeal from former CAB chief Avishek Dalmiya. However, after a conversation with Sourav Ganguly, the former India captain and ex-BCCI president, Saha decided to return to Bengal for one final season, taking on the role of a mentor for his younger teammates.

This season marks a nostalgic finale for Saha as he once again dons Bengal's colors, determined to contribute to the team's success in his swan song. "Let's make this season one to rememberâ€æ" he wrote, as fans and teammates rallied around him to support him through his farewell tournament.

Arguably the greatest pure wicket keeper ever from Bharat. Thanks for the memories Saha bhai. Happy retirement. Wishing you the best in future endeavours.
