"Players on the bench are there to be used as replacement if mainstays aren't performing" : Inzamam

KARACHI: Pakistan national team chief selector Inzamamul Haq has said that he is ready to take full responsibility for Sarfraz Ahmed and co’s dismal performance on their limited-overs tour of New Zealand.

Kane Williamson-led New Zealand gained an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match ODI series on Saturday after humiliating Pakistan with a 183-run defeat, as the Men in Green succumbed to their third lowest total of 74 in the 50-over format while chasing 257.

Inzamam, while addressing media on Sunday during the National One-Day Departmental Cup, said Pakistan need to find strength from the bench to hit back in the series.

“The players on the bench are there to be used as replacement if the mainstays are not performing,” he said. “The time has come that Pakistan try players from the bench.”

When asked to comment on the batting performance, Inzamam said: “The way we have lost wickets in all the matches is not acceptable. If it had happened in a single match then we could’ve accepted it, but they did not put up a good show in all three encounters.”

The 47-year-old added that the team needed to move forward after the Champions Trophy victory but they are at a standstill at the moment.

“This is nearly the same team that won the Champions Trophy and since then our performances should have become better, however we see that the team hasn’t improved,” he said.

Inzamam continued saying winning and losing in part of the game but he expected a better fight from the team “I don’t care if they win or lose, but they need to perform better than this,” he said.

However, he was optimistic that they will find solutions to the problems Pakistan are facing on the tour.

“There are some reasons behind these losses, but disturbing the team right now, in the middle of the series is not right. I am as worried about Pakistan’s performance as anyone else in the country, and when the team returns we will sit together with the captain, the coach and the management and talk about what happened and what can be done about, like we always do after every bad and good series.”

On a concluding note, Inzamam said if Pakistan is not able to change their fortunes in the ongoing series, he is ready to take all the responsibility.

“Conditions are different in New Zealand and I agree we should do more overseas tours, but we cannot solely blame the conditions,” he explained. “Team has been making mistakes that could’ve been avoided. We still have five matches (two ODIs and three T20Is) left and we are hopeful that the team will perform better, and if it doesn’t, I’m ready to take all the responsibility.”

We expect bold decision from Sarfraz to bat at No.3. I don't who is stopping him to do so. I gues its Hafeez & Malik who don't want to compromise or sacrifice their positions, so ultimately Sarfraz is doing so just for the sake of team unity or may be because of the black-mailing of these so-called seniors.

It was a very rosy Q&A with
media not asking the tough questions
I think his press conference before the tour can be revisited that he knew the team would not do as per expectations. With Imad Wasim removing himself from contention also was an indication
Mostly diverted blame onto the team management on the benched options. Harris Sohail has some serious fitness issue[knee problem] which is why team mgmt. have not allowed him to play.
I feel Inzamam knows that already Harris sohail wont get a game which is why he is selecting him consecutively.

No middle order player(s) in the squad.
How can team mgmt. replace no.3 MAlik with a no.7 batsman Amir Yamin or push another youngster given our senior worship culture. Inzamam has not given them any options to replace the middle order, to begin with. And has made sure whatever XI Pakistan plays Hafeez, Malik and Azam can't be dropped.

No one asking inzamam Pakistan had no option to bowl with the opening spell
Inzamam has also limited the bowling options also. He has made Amir an automatic selection, he has flunked after his comeback trying to save runs instead of getting people out. Whenever Junaid Khan does'nt play Amir performance also go down. Pakistan really missed Junaid as Amir failed to take any wickets and other bowlers on their first tour had issues with totally new conditions in NZ and bowling against the wind. Mir hamza or someone else should've been selected for the new ball but was'nt which hurt us pretty badly.

Non-starter interview.
No question was asked on the selections of T20 series, and inclusion of Ahmed Shehzad again. No one asked how many players Inzamam has introduced in his 2 yeaar tenure and why he has been adamant to keep Shehzad, Hafeez, Malik, Azam, Imam [his nephew], Akmals in the team replacing them with each other or not even replacing them at all.

I feel PCB board now has to take more responsiblity as they are just one year away from 2019 and their chief selector Inzamam is not willing to select or give chance to any domestic player on the batting department minus his favorites.

I have to listen it before commenting, hopefully with my Urdu skills, in between Inshallah in alternate words, I'll be able to extract something.

As of now, I have two points -

1. Picking from bench is a very logical point by CS - here bench means Imam as opener, Nawaz as all rounder & Yamin as pacer..... on top of that Sarfu is struggling in every scope including captaincy, but there is no deputy assigned, neither a back-up WK in squad. So, if he is rested then MoHa can be made make shift Captain & WK

2. If I can recall correctly, the T20 squad was announced after 2nd ODI (3rd match of the tour, that tour match should have rung some bells) - of which first one at one point was 40-5 chasing 309; 2nd one 134/7 or so batting first - that entire squad was retained for T20 as well, barring 2

Rest, we can discuss Inshallah once our good mod Abdullah posts the clip ....

A fast-bowler on the bench would have helped, Inzi.

Also a proper opener rather than the 90s style ones.

“I don’t care if they win or lose..." Eh? :murali

How can Nawaz be picked if Shadab is performing with his 100% effort with the bowling, batting as well as on the field ?

How can Amir Yameen be picked if we have pacers like Amir & Hasan ??? .. While Rumman took 3 wickets in the last match and Fahim is a good power hitter at No.8...

They only can be seen is to bring Haris Sohail in and through Hafeez out.

Then why the "bench strength" comes? In total you are suggesting 1 change out of 16 - I actually am not sure if Haris is that good to change the fortune of this series; hence I thought all possibilities should be considered. After all, Ul Haq can't be wrong - he picked 16 men squad, which should be enough for every other alternatives.

Unfortunately he picked a wrong 16 squad.

To me, PCB should have held that Departmental Cup either before NZ tour or after NZ tour. I don't see any logic behind holding this List A cup during the NZ tour.

Will he pick the best performers of the cup in next ODI tour ? .. Obviously NO.. He will keep selecting his favorites like Ahmed Shazad, Akmal brothers, Hafeez, Malik, Wahab etc etc.

this thinking of "just give 100% regardless of the result" is such a LOSER mentally. Its what parents tell to their 4-year olds, not what you say to a team of professional athletes

you've just won the CT, you should absolutely go into every match looking to kill the opposition. Not to give 100% and be happy

Inzi spoken like he's still coaching Afghanistan

Shehzad will perform, trust that!

Well at least he is giving cover to team Managment to drop some of the experienced guys. Question is how far will Sarfaraz take it. I think 2 out of 3 will be dropped this match and the third will be dropped in the last game

It's double edged sword - if Haris scores, it's a dead rubber; if he fails - can't even do in dead rubber. You can't beat MoHa - better accept it, only a matter of just little more than 5 years.

He has himself to blame for the bench too. Barring Haris and Yamin, who else could the captain/coach call on to change things up...

Most of us know might know to the contrary, but he thinks Imam ul Haq is a suitable replacement for Azhar ali.
I would say he is right, Imam can replace Azhar, but he is wrong because neither batsman should be playing odi's or t20's

Sarfraz should bat at No.3 while Babar at No.4 or the vice versa.

For next 2 remaining ODIs, continue with Azhar & Fakhar. After all, this pair has worked successfully in the CT 2017.

There needs to be able replacements on the bench to replace the guys in the current XI. How can you replace a bowler(Rumman or Amir) with an allrounder who cant bowl a full quota of 10 overs properly considering we are already facing some difficulties with having only 5 proper bowlers, reducing it to 4 is only going to do more harm.
Although Harris can ably replace Hafeez or Malik, can you replace Azhar or Babar with Imam and Nawaz?
Send a better squad so it can inspire some belief.

In addition to that, Sarfraz is way too rigid and stiff with his tactics and selections, he kept Wahab Riaz and Ahmed Shehzad in the team despite them failing for so long just cause the team was winning. He needs to get out of his comfort zone and have some faith in the outsiders.

last year the pak one day cup at the right time before CT and the performers of the cup were haris sohail, Umar amin, sami aslam, aamer yamin did he select any of them NO... Haris got a chance after UA sent back for poor fitness.

Thank you for clarifying Inzi. We thought they were show pieces to decorate the bench

This might not be the right thread, but I have few questions:

1) Why PCB selection committee be it new one of Inzi or the older ones, rely so much on likes of Akmals, Wahab, Shehzad, Malik, Hafeez,Tanvir, etc.
2) Why media always back these TTFF's so much? Lot of pressure comes from media to include these non-performers? Why??
3) Why they can't perform when playing International cricket?
4) Why they are so inconsitent, yet boasted as talented or our next hope?
5) Why any captain be it Misbah, Younis, Afrid, or Sarafaraz keep TTFF in their team even knowing they are playing with fewer than 11 players?
6) Why they keep coming back?
7) Why media critisizes young players but don't question worth of these TTFF?

One big difference I have found:

I watched many Indian and Australian Match previews, analysis and post match discussions, but never ever saw non-players making judgement about the players. They simply report that this was the result and these guys didn't perform. and then they back their players. Unlike, many rubbish analysis like BKBH, GOH, TGS,etc, those media channels don't back their non-performers.

If India has courage to drop Yuvi, Raina who are 200% better players than TTFFs and still has fire left in them. Why can't we get rid of inconsistent, over rated players.

I still remember, India dropped Ganguly and David from ODI triggers series in Australia in 2007-2008, which they eventually won.

Money, connections, pressure, and captains too pressured and chicken to drop TTF

Because Hafeez's smile lifts the team's spirit. He's an essential cog.

I watching one show and there analysts are saying why Umar Akmal and Kamran are not in the team, and guess what who they want out of the team, Fakhar and Fahim.

There analysis went like this:

1) Selection irregularities
2) Akmals are performing vey well, selectors must recognize talent and should give them chance
3) If Fakhar and Fahim can get chances in the team, then why not Akmals
4) Fakhar and Fahim has not shown their worth so far, Fakhar's final innings might be a fluke
then they targeted Amir:

5) Amir performance is once in a blue moon
6) Hafeez played that crucial innings in CT final that turned the game in Pak favor
7) Kohl misjudged it that's why he got out

You best batsman bats at No: 3, and Sarfraz is not. He is not a good batsman for ODIs at any position .

Basically Inzi saying to Mickey Arthur and Sarfaraz Ahmed, why the hell aren't you playing Haris Sohail.

If you're a senior such as Hafeez, you're guaranteed a spot. Bhaar mai jai performance.
