PlayStation 5: Sony gives first look at new PS5 console and games

My god what a game this new call of duty. I miss it already! Cannot wait for the next beta and then the full release! :D

Gamers hoping to buy a PlayStation 5 on its release day have been met by long queues and crashing websites as retailers struggle to cope with demand.

Thousands of shoppers had been hoping to purchase one of the £450 consoles on its first day of sale - with many complaining on social media after being hit with messages of limited stock, delayed release or long online queues to place an order.

Games retailers have been overwhelmed by demand for PlayStation’s latest console, which launched in the UK on Thursday.

Web pages dedicated to the launch of the PlayStation 5 at John Lewis, Tesco and Game had all crashed on Thursday morning. Currys had introduced a queuing system that had tens of thousands of customers on hold on Thursday morning.

With much of their stock already sold via orders placed before the launch, Game, Currys, John Lewis and Argos all said they had sold out of the £449 console by 10.10am on Thursday.

However, thousands of consoles were available on auction site eBay for more than double the list price, with some sellers asking for more than £1,000.

John Lewis said: “There have been extremely high levels of demand for our website this morning and we are experiencing some technical issues. Our teams are working hard to get the site running smoothly again as soon as possible. We apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused.”

Gaming fans posted angry messages on Currys’ Twitter feed after the company first said it would launch the PlayStation 5 at 9am, then moved it to 11am and then admitted it had sold out. “We know that this is disappointing news, and we are working super hard to get more stock,” the company said.

Some shoppers claimed they had been able to make an order before 9am through a loophole in the system only for it to be cancelled later. When the Guardian checked Currys’ queue at 10am, the website was already saying it was out of stock.

“So you had none to give today at all!! Or you sold them in the middle of the night!! What a shambles,” tweeted one shopper.

“Just spent 2 hours trying to hold a place in the queue and you do this,” said another.

Game’s official Twitter feed put out a message at about 11.20am that said its 9am launch was “on hold”.

One gaming fan tweeted: “Not happy to be waiting in a 50min queue, to then be advised I’m being redirected to the main website, to then being told this page has timed out. And now this.”

Game said some deliveries of the console could be delayed because of nationwide “delivery challenges” caused by the launch.

In an email to customers, Game said the courier firm Yodel had warned that “capacity issues” meant that some machines ordered before the launch would not arrive until Friday.

Numerous shoppers complained via Game’s social media channels that they had paid extra for guaranteed morning delivery of a PlayStation 5 on launch day but the console appeared to have been lost or delayed en route.

“Why did I pay for [courier firm] DPD before 12pm on release day delivery to be stuck with Yodel who are reporting lots of packages as ‘missing’. Such a joke,” one shopper wrote.

“Paid £12 extra for guaranteed DPD pre-10am delivery. Now sat staring out the window at 11:25am waiting for you or my downgraded Yodel delivery to let me know what’s going on. Really angry,” said another.

Yodel said it was “deeply disappointing” to be blamed for the problems.

It said it did not work directly for Game but for GFS, a logistics business, which supplied the retailer. “We have been consistently clear on the order volumes we are able to carry for them and it is deeply disappointing that Yodel’s name has been incorrectly used in an email to customers on the status of orders. There are currently no delays within our network, and any issues regarding delivery capacity is a matter for GFS and not Yodel,” the company said.

It said timely delivery of the parcels was its “utmost priority”.

Game said in its email to customers: “Due to the volume of PlayStation 5s in the UK market and the size of the product, the launch has led to UK-wide delivery challenges for all retailers and couriers.

“Our aim has always been to ensure that as many orders arrive on time for release day as possible, therefore we have had to secure multiple couriers to help try to achieve this.”

The PS5 problems come as gaming kits are expected to be a popular purchase in the run-up to Christmas as families look for new ways to entertain themselves during a less sociable festive season than usual.

Many retailers have also sold out of the new Xbox Series X console which launched last week.

So what’s the verdict

In terms of graphics, it appears to be the least significant jump between any two generation consoles. It seems like a more powerful, crispier version of PS4 rather than a different beast.

I was very excited for it but after watching a few videos my excitement has dampened. Then again, I only play FIFA and GTA so hardcore gamers will have a more informed opinion.

I think more than graphics, it would allow much bigger scope, so games like RDR and GTA would be far bigger and detailed compared to PS4.

Will be getting one next week hopefully.

My backlog of games is too massive. No chance I get this before summer 2021

You will not see a big graphical jump immediately- though Demon Souls remake does look new gen. I don’t bother with cross platform games as the exclusives is where it will really shine. So far in tests, PS5 is outperforming XBOX SX (surprisingly). This could be because developers are finding it easier to tap in to it’s raw power than on the XBOX. It has so far sold twice as much as the XBOX.

What’s funny, users are expecting PS4 games to magically look better on the PS5. This is not the case. You will however see better FPS.

Overall, I am loving it. The user interface is slick & user friendly. The dualsense joypad if fantastic. The whole setup looks & feels premium. Buy users do need the latest 4K TV’s with HDMI 2.1 interface to make the most of it.

To see the graphic jump most players will need to upgrade their TVs. It's going to be about a year before we start seeing games exclusively engineered on the PS5.

The only aspect of PS5 that is considered next-gen, is the controller.

I have had it for at least a week. The Ui is amazing well organized. Sharing your clips, taking screenshots, recording them is all done very smoothly. The PS5 controller has untapped potential that you don’t see other games utilize. The Astro game showcases some of it. Like one example is you feeling what surface your walking on. Another is you having to move your controller in a motion to make your character reach something. Those are few examples I am sure when the developers get used to the next gen we should see them utilize the PS5 controller in a unique way. Graphically you won’t see a huge jump unless your tv supports it like others say. My verdict overall is that the jump from PS4 to PS5 has been great. It has made doing simple tasks easier. They made changes to the Ui so its simpler for you to do what you wanna do. As a gamer who would love to get clips for games to share videos they made it far more accessible to do. The sharefactory itself has been upgraded to it’s previous one. So you don’t need a powerful editing software.

worth 2.5 lakhs. I'll prob just get it next year from the US, once covid is under control.

Only worth getting if there's good exclusive games out for the console. Spiderman Miles morales is decent but not ground breaking, a minimum score of 90/100 on metacritic for a particular game is a good indicator on getting a console for that game and eventually other games. I'm interested in what Naughty Dog will develop for the PS5, hopefully a new IP; they're nearly on par with Rockstar games in terms of quality.

Thanks. I see PS5 and PS5 digital addition? Which one should I get? It seems the digital addition doesn’t have a disc spot. Why would I want one now anyway?

Any disadvantage to getting digital edition and saving $100?

You'll need a very high speed internet connection if you want to get the digital edition.

All PS4 discs work on ps5. Best thing would be to get the disc version then you will have a bigger library of games to play in new generation of console not many exclusive games comes out. Plus buying old games on disc is cheap so if any you missed on PS4 you can catch up and play again on ps5. Also the hard drive capacity isn't great on ps5 and compatible SSD will cost arm and leg. Go for disc version.

Ok. Also realized that while I’m in US rn was May move back to Pakistan (at the very least visit frequently iA) so from that perspective depending on internet May not be smartest decision as speeds can get slow

Most people I know prefer the disc version over digital. It might be $100 more but actually owning a hard copy of the game is priceless, with the digital version you don't really "own" the game, you just have the rights to play it and it can scrubbed off your system by Sony. It's always better to have a hard copy of everything and store the soft copy on your own drives, storing things on the cloud isn't the safest option. Plus there's the advantage of playing older PS4 games

If you are planning on using it in Pakistan, go for the disc edition. Yes it is more expensive but you will be using it for at least 6-7 years as well.

From the Digital version you can only buy from the psn store, where as with the disc version you can do both. In my opinion the disc version has more advantage over digital. Even though PSN store itself has nice sales. You’re better off buying the disc version. It will save you money incase you have physical copies of some of your favorite PS4 games.

I've had my PSN account for 14 years. The only numpties that manage to get their accounts blocked are the teenagers who think its funny to break the terms and conditions.

Most of you also seem to forget that many games are now only available via PSN - no disc release and this is where the future is heading. These also include DLC, and non AAA release. Fortnite and RDO for example - no disc, totally online.

The real benefit of the Disc version is that it can play 4K/DVD movies unlike the PS4 pro.

Don’t bother. The price of digital games are extortionate.

Here in the UK, disc games can be traded in for new titles.

The PlayStation 5 has become Sony's fastest ever selling games console, the Japanese electronics giant said.

Sony said more than 10 million units had been sold by 18 July since the model's launch on 12 November, even as it grapples with the impact of a global chip shortage.

PlayStation 5 supply issues finally fixed after three years, says Sony

Supply chain problems that plagued the PlayStation 5 for three years have now been resolved, its maker Sony has said.

The global chip shortage which began in 2020 impacted industries from car manufacturing to credit cards.

Customers were frustrated at month-long waits for the PS5, with some queueing outside shops overnight, and others paying resellers sky-high prices.

The shortages steadily resolved through 2023, and Sony said its supply chain is now completely fixed worldwide.

That means the console is now not only readily available - but a surplus may lead to retailers competing for the sale.

It comes as Sony boss Eric Lempel also said it had redesigned its PlayStation Plus subscription service, this week adding cloud gaming for PS5 games.

The gaming firm's head of business said players could also cloud stream many of the games they already own digitally.

Microsoft's own subscription service, Game Pass, also allows players to stream some of the latest games.

Sony's announcement comes as Microsoft announced an aggressively cut-price deal for its Xbox console with three months of its subscription service bundled in, while Sony is focusing on hardware with a smaller PS5 coming soon.

In the video game sector all the major companies were affected by the chip shortage, and in 2022 scalpers were selling the PS5 at twice its retail price - despite this, the console increased in price by £30 in stores.

Christopher Ding, head of gaming news site Gamesindustry.biz, said the improvement to supply was important after players were unable to buy the new console.

He said: "2022 was a particularly poor year for PS5, with sales down on the previous year due to a lack of available units.

"Sony launched some big games in 2022... but these games were also released on PlayStation 4 because a large proportion of players were still gaming on the previous generation machine."

He said the shortage of PS5 consoles meant they had largely not been part of Black Friday deals in previous years, but he expected that to change this year.

Black Friday is a sales event held on the last Friday of November each year intended to kickstart holiday shopping by offering people cut-price deals.

Did you end up getting one? If so, how are you finding it?

I was planning too but I was gifted an Xbox Series X. Graphics look great on a 4K tv as they should, but Microsoft have gone out of their way to make it as user-unfriendly as they could.

I would like to sell it for a PS5 but it was a gift from a closed one so I’m stuck with it.

You could should just get a PS5 if you want to play any of the exclusives on this console.

I personally prefer the Xbox controller. I game on PC but the PS5 controller is a big improvement from its predecessor.

For your Xbox, I would highly recommend playing Forza on your 4K TV. That’s coming from someone who’s not a big fan of the racing game genre.

The new PS5 slim has also been announced.

Picture Core app too (The movie streaming service found in Bravia TVs).

Playstation Portal is awesome too!

Just get the fellow on board and sell it with his/assistance, and get the Ps5 along with the fellow.

Don't think too much abt formalities and give it a serous thought. Gifts are supposed to be cherished and enjoyed, not to be allowed to become a source for consternation.
