Faisal Edhi, son of world-famous philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi and chairman of the Edhi Foundation, has tested positive for the coronavirus, it emerged on Tuesday.

Speaking to Dawn, his son Saad Edhi said that his father started suffering from symptoms last week, soon after he travelled to Islamabad to meet with Prime Minister Imran Khan on April 15.

"The symptoms lasted for four days before subsiding," he said. Soon after, Faisal got tested for Covid-19 and the results came back positive today.

Saad added that his father was currently in Islamabad and was doing better. "He has not been admitted to any hospital and is self-isolating," he said.

Last week, the Edhi Foundation chairman had met Prime Minister Imran Khan and had handed over a Rs10 million cheque for the premier's coronavirus relief fund.

The Edhi Foundation has for decades stepped in to help when government services have failed communities and runs the country’s largest ambulance service.

Due to the outbreak, it has had to train dozens of staff on how to handle suspected coronavirus patients. But providing them with proper protection has been a problem given a nationwide shortage of the equipment.

“We’ve compromised on certain things and use alternatives,” Faisal had told Reuters at his office in Karachi last month.

Faisal had said his organisation was getting dozens of calls a day from people worried that they or their relatives were infected with the coronavirus.

The Edhi Foundation was founded by the late Abdul Sattar Edhi and its operations are sprawled throughout the country. Edhi runs several shelter houses, old homes, an ambulance network, orphanages, soup kitchens, morgues along with multiple other welfare services.

Since the demise of Edhi in 2016, however, the foundation has seen a drop in donations and funds.

Will recommend PM Imran gets tested for coronavirus, says personal physician

Speaking to Dawn after news broke of Edhi Foundation Chairman Faisal Edhi testing positive for Covid-19, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital CEO Dr Faisal Sultan, who is also Imran Khan's personal physician, said that the prime minister was currently occupied with a cabinet meeting.

"As soon as he is finished, I will meet him and recommend that he gets tested," he said. "We will follow all protocols in place and make recommendations accordingly."

PM Imran will get tested for Covid-19 following medical advice: aide

Prime Minister Imran Khan has agreed to get tested for the coronavirus after meeting with someone who tested positive for the virus, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Covid-19 Dr Faisal Sultan has said.

Faisal Edhi, the head of one of Pakistan's largest charity groups, the Edhi Foundation, has tested positive for coronavirus, reported Geo News on Tuesday.

According to Geo News, Edhi is in Islamabad at the moment and had insisted on being tested since he had been on the ground working with patients. His family will also undergo test for the virus as well.

Edhi had traveled to Lahore and then to Islamabad, where he met Prime Minister Imran Khan and donated a Rs10 million check on behalf of his organisation.

His family told Geo News, he had insisted on a test whose result came back today as positive.

Moreover, Edhi’s son, Saad Edhi told Geo News, everyone who had come in contact with him will be tested for the virus. According to his test reports, he had no symptoms of the virus.

The social worker is in isolation and is in constant contact with his doctor, Geo News reported.

Speaking to Geo News over the phone, Edhi said he started experiencing severe headache and fever on Aril 16.

“When this situation continued for the next two days my friends suggested that I take the test,” he said. “I have no symptoms now but my test came back positive.”

The doctor has told me to self-isolate for a week, Edhi said.

The host and crew of a TV show, where Faisal Edhi had made an appearance last week, has been administered tests and advised to stay at home till results return.

Last week, Edhi had met Prime Minister Imran Khan and presented Rs10 million cheque to the Prime Minister's Coronavirus Relief Fund.

Speaking to Geo News, Dr Faisal Sultan, the prime minister’s focal person on coronavirus, said he will meet the premier in the evening tonight and apprise him of the situation.

“I will speak to the prime minister about this,” Sultan said. “Keeping in mind the situation and what we know about the virus and how it is spread through contact, I will make recommendations.”

The final decision to take the test or not rests with the prime minister, Sultan added.

I think he should go into isolation it will set a good example for the public and also his health and others are at risk too so one should take precautions in this situation

Exactly, he must be a role model and also needs to protect those other people around him, fighting this virus should be a communal effort by everyone, even those right at the top.

if he takes a test and tests negative, there is no need for isolation. right?

Not necessarily as a large proportion of cases are asymptomatic - he could still be carrying the virus, especially as he recently came into contact with an infected person. Better to isolate for a week or so to be safe and set a good example.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't asymptomatic mean no symptoms but still testing positive if a test were administered?

I think in some asymptomatic cases test has given false negative report in first two odd days, so there fore it is needed to go into isolation for 1 to 2 week and if symptoms appears in 5 to 7 days then test again

what if he is tested positive? All others who have met him meanwhile will also have to test themselves. This is how virus is spread.

I wonder how he got the virus in the first place? He even appeared on a private channel talking about meeting prime minster. That news presenter and his family. Good luck. Still, Mulvis would like to do congregational prayers ?

The results need to be disclosed as a matter of urgency.

I would have thought the edhi foundation were on the front lines helping and healing
They are like the fourth emergency service in alot of places

Sorry for my unawareness but Is Faisal Edhi really Covid-19 +ve ? What and Who is the source ?

Anyway ;
>>Meeting took place some 6-7 days ago.
>>For 90 percentile Incubation is 5-7 days.
>>At 70, truly asymptomatic infection is less likely.

Considering all this, IK is supposed to test negative. This takes me back to my questions ; What and Who is the source of this news that Mr Edhi actually Covid +ve ?

Sir meeting took place 3 days ago

Trudeau was in isolation for two weeks after his wife's diagnosis. Why should it be any different for IK?

Sir meeting took place 3 days ago

15 April.
IK should get tested.
But so has to be Mr Edhi also. He should also be tested.

Having met a PM, Mr Edhi can't be so stupid to not inform PM during four days of symptoms.

Let the dust settle. As I see in the thread, for now our only source is Geo, Dawn, Son of Mr Faisal Edhi. And from thereon it's all hearsay with reaction chain.

Can someone work on the source of this news ?

Prime Minister Imran Khan has been tested for #COVIDー19.

Medical experts from the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital collected his sample. The results are awaited now.

He has been tested because he had met Faisal Edhi five days ago who tested positive today.

ISLAMABAD: As the total number of deaths from coronavirus surpassed 200 on Tuesday, Prime Minister Imran Khan underwent a test for Covid-19. Health authorities collected his sample and the result is expected on Wednesday (today).

The decision was made as per a standard operating procedure (SOP) suggesting that every contact of a confirmed Covid-19 case should undergo a test.

The confirmation about the test came from the prime minister’s focal person on Covid-19 Dr Faisal Sultan. “Prime minister will undergo Covid-19 test as he met philanthropist Faisal Edhi who later tested positive for the deadly virus,” he said at a news conference along with Prime Minister Khan.

Faisal Edhi, the head of Edhi Foundation, came to Islamabad by road and handed over a cheque for Rs10 million to the prime minister for the coronavirus relief fund.

Interestingly, later in a TV interview, Mr Edhi revealed that PM Khan did not recognise him. An industrialist, who was present there, recognised him and told the prime minister that he [Mr Faisal] was son of the late Abdul Sattar Edhi.

An official of the National Institute of Health (NIH) said on condition of anonymity that as per the SOP all contacts of a confirmed Covid-19 patient should be tested. When asked about the definition of a contact, he said any person who had talked to a confirmed patient for 15 minutes in a closed room or stood at a distance of less than six feet was called a contact.

“Though according to Faisal Edhi, he spent just a few minutes with the premier, the picture we have seen in newspapers showed that the distance between the two personalities was less than six feet. Though they did not shake hands, the virus can be transferred through cheque,” the official said.

“Moreover, it is an international practice that risk cannot be taken in such high-profile cases. So it has been decided to test the premier. As the prime minister met a number of personalities and also chaired cabinet meetings, we are expecting that a number of samples will be received,” he said.

The NIH official pointed out that some days ago a co-worker of Faisal Edhi tested positive for coronavirus and later he [Mr Edhi] came to Islamabad. “Symptoms of Covid-19 developed here due to which he was tested and found positive. Mr Edhi has been residing at an Edhi home in Islamabad,” he said.

The official said that since 66 per cent cases of Covid-19 had been caused by local transmission, now anyone can contract the virus from anywhere. “Moreover, a decision has been taken to relax the lockdown due to which the situation can become worse in the coming days,” he added.

Meanwhile, Faisal Edhi in a video statement urged his team to continue welfare activities and he would join them after having recovered from Covid-19.

Saad Edhi, a son of Faisal Edhi, told Dawn in Karachi that his father had developed Covid-19 symptoms a day after meeting PM Khan. The impact of symptoms, he added, continued for four days and then subsided. However, on Monday, he got tested in Islamabad and on Tuesday his report came as positive.

Saad said his father’s health was better and he was in self-isolation, adding that he was not admitted at any hospital.

Health situation room

Meanwhile, the Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) has established a Health Situation Room (HSR) at the ministry to deal with Covid-19.

NHS ministry’s spokesman Sajid Shah said the HSR would help boost coordination among all stakeholders and would also be used against other diseases such as dengue.

In another development, the NHS ministry has entered into a partnership with global technology giant Google to raise awareness about prevention of Covid-19 in the country. Free space has been provided by Google for public education through all existing channels, including Search, Display and YouTube. Through this assistance, the NHS ministry will be able to deliver critical information to Pakistanis on how to prevent and cope with the spread of Covid-19.

“The free space or ad credits provided are worth $5 million and are part of Google’s Ad Grants Programme and are anticipated to run until the end of the year. To support Pakistan both in the ongoing short-term response to the virus and in the long-term, Google is concentrating on three priorities that they believe are critical to a sustainable recovery,” said a statement.

Bilawal’s directive to CM

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has directed Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah to visit all districts of the province. He said that providing relief to those in need at their doorstep was an appreciable task. The principle of social distancing should be followed and the people in need should be dealt with in a manner which did not compromise their self respect, he added.

Mr Bilawal, who is in Islamabad, was briefed by the Sindh chief minister on the situation in Larkana through a video link.

According to a statement, Mr Shah informed the PPP chairman that a Covid-19 test laboratory in Larkana would be in operation next week. He said 13,500 ration bags had been distributed among the poor in Larkana, whereas 3,313 families had been given Rs6,000 each from the Zakat fund.

As I mentioned earlier, PM was supposed to be negative. And reports say he is negative.

OTOH, in an era of Social Media, I still haven't seen the image of Mr Edhi's report. Bizarre.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has tested negative for coronavirus on Wednesday, ARY News reported.

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday underwent a test for Covid-19 after the Edhi Foundation’s chairperson Faisal Edhi, who called on him last week, was diagnosed with the virus.

Medical experts from the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital took his sample for the deadly disease.

Earlier, on April 15, Mr Edhi met with Prime Minister Imran Khan in Islamabad to present him with a Rs10 million cheque for the Corona Relief Fund.

Speaking at a media briefing this evening, the premier’s focal person on Covid-19 Dr Faisal Sultan confirmed PM Khan will undergo the coronavirus test.

The Sindh Health Department today revealed the coronavirus report of Faisal Edhi has turned out to be positive. His son Saad Edhi in a statement said that Faisal Edhi is in Islamabad and doing better.

“He has not been admitted to any hospital and is self-isolating,” he added.

It must be noted that the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the country has jumped to 9,749 after 533 new infections were reported during the past 24 hours.

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday tested negative for the novel coronavirus, his focal person on Covid-19 Dr Faisal Sultan and government's chief spokesperson Firdous Ashiq Awan confirmed on Twitter.

The premier was tested for SARS-CoV-2, the virus strain that causes Covid-19, today. The test used was a polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

"I am happy to report that his test is NEGATIVE," wrote Dr Sultan.

Prime Minister Imran was tested for Covid-19 after it emerged that Faisal Edhi, son of world-famous philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi and chairman of the Edhi Foundation, had contracted the virus.

“Prime minister will undergo Covid-19 test as he met philanthropist Faisal Edhi who later tested positive for the deadly virus,” Dr Sultan had said on Tuesday at a news conference.

Faisal Edhi had visited the prime minister last week in Islamabad and handed over a cheque for Rs10 million to the prime minister for his coronavirus relief fund.

An official of the National Institute of Health (NIH) had said yesterday that as per the Standard Operating Procedures, all contacts of a confirmed Covid-19 patient should be tested. When asked about the definition of a contact, he said any person who had talked to a confirmed patient for 15 minutes in a closed room or stood at a distance of less than six feet was called a contact.

Saad said his father’s health was better and he was in self-isolation, adding that he was not admitted to any hospital.

Zulfi Bukhari's video removed

Earlier in the day, a video of Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development Sayed Zulfiqar Bukhari, known as Zulfi Bukhari, saying Prime Minister Imran had tested negative for the coronavirus was removed from the PTI official Instagram account.

"Khan sahab has tested negative, thank God. I don't need to give him any suggestions [...] He knows exactly whom to meet and whom not to meet," Bukhari had said in the video shared on Wednesday afternoon.

The video, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, was subsequently removed from the PTI account.

Dr Sultan had revealed earlier in the day that the premier's samples had been collected and the test results were expected soon.

In a video message, he had said: "The test takes a few hours. We will release the report through official channels once it is received."

Good wake up call for IK. A head of state should value his position and adopt necessary measures.

btw, was anyone able to find image of Mr Edhi's report. Reportedly he is in Isolation in Islamabad but statement about his report is coming from Sindh Govt. Is there any explanation ?

Good to hear IK is not infected.

He doesn't look past 50, still runs a lot , eats good food and above all he has a heart of a Lion. Even if he is infected Godwilling, it will be very minor symptoms or he may even be immune now.

Good news.

Imran has a big work to do with COVID-19. He needs to be in good health.
