LAHORE: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Monday arrested leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif from outside the Lahore High Court (LHC) in a money-laundering case it had filed earlier.

The LHC rejected the bail petition filed by the PML-N president in the asset beyond means and money-laundering case and cancelled his interim bail before NAB officials took him into custody from the court premises.

A large number of PML-N workers, including women, who were at the court to support the former chief minister of Punjab, raised chants against the anti-graft watchdog and the incumbent PTI-led government. Shortly after the arrest, a scuffle broke out between the security personnel and the Shehbaz's supporters.

The former chief minister of Punjab had earlier reached the LHC for a hearing on his interim bail petition in the money-laundering case filed by the NAB. A two-member bench of the LHC presided over the hearing, while lawyers representing the former Punjab chief minister presented their arguments after a three-day hiatus.

A two-judge bench of the LHC had on Thursday extended Shehbaz's interim bail in the same case till September 28.

In December, last year, the anti-graft watchdog had issued orders to freeze 23 properties owned by former Punjab chief minister and his sons, Hamza and Suleman, over claims they had acquired assets beyond their known sources of income and committed money-laundering.

According to the NAB, an investigation against Shehbaz, Hamza, Suleman, and others had revealed that the PML-N president had acquired properties in the name of his wives Nusrat and Tehmina Durrani.

Among the frozen properties were nine plots in Lahore's Johar Town, four in Judicial Colony, two houses in Model Town, and some others in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA).

Moreover, the anti-corruption body had also frozen a cottage and a villa in Pir Sohawa, as well as two plots in Chiniot.

Pakistani anti-corruption officials arrested the country's opposition leader on Monday, days after he vowed to help lead efforts to dislodge Prime Minister Imran Khan's government.

Shahbaz Sharif -- who heads the opposition in the country's National Assembly -- was arrested in Lahore after the eastern city's high court rejected a bail plea in a money-laundering case.

"We are not scared of these arrests," said Marriyum Aurangzeb, spokeswoman for Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N).

Sharif is the brother of three-time prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who was ousted over corruption allegations in 2017 and is currently residing in Britain after being released from prison earlier this year for medical treatment.

Maryam Nawaz -- the daughter of the ex-premier -- also confirmed her uncle's arrest on Twitter.

"Sharif has been arrested ONLY because he REFUSED to play in the hands of those who wanted to use him against his brother. He preferred standing behind prison bars than to stand against his brother," she tweeted.

Khan's administration has been pushing for Nawaz's return to the country to continue his prison sentence.

The arrest comes as opposition parties have reignited efforts to remove Khan from office, vowing earlier this month to launch a protest movement in the coming weeks demanding the government's resignation.

Pressure has been simmering against Khan's government in recent months with the country's economy battered by fiscal deficits, soaring inflation and a string of currency devaluations.

Khan was elected in 2018 on promises to rein in corruption and build a welfare state. But since taking power, the former cricketer has struggled to deliver on his campaign vows amid economic headwinds.

If he does then the Judiciary has alot to answer. The TTS are a noose around his neck and he knows. This is about clear cut as it ever gets when it comes to white collar crime.

I agree with your sir. Nobody will be happier than me. However I just have seen too many times what happens.

LAHORE: As the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested on Monday PML-N president and Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif after the Lahore High Court denied him further relief of pre-arrest bail in the assets beyond means and money laundering case, the party said the drive against ‘fascist regime’ had begun.

The party leadership, including Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz, gave a strong reaction, saying the arrest would not deter implementation of the multiparty conference’s (MPC) decisions and the newly-formed opposition’s alliance — Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) — called a meeting on Tuesday (today) in Islamabad to review the situation after Shahbaz’s detention and possible arrest of other leaders, the PTI government’s alleged plan to rig Gilgit-Baltistan and local bodies polls and give a final shape to the decisions taken at the MPC.

“The puppet regime has endorsed the MPC’s resolution by arresting Shahbaz. Shahbaz Sharif had told the MPC that whether he would be in jail or not all decisions taken in MPC would be implemented. I want to say… make no mistake, we can never be silenced through coercive tactics,” former premier Nawaz Sharif tweeted from London.

Speaking to reporters outside Stanhope House, Nawaz Sharif termed his brother’s arrest “unjustifiable and unacceptable”. He said the current administration had broken all records of injustice, adding his party would not be cowed into submission by such tactics.

When asked if Shahbaz’s arrest was expected after his fiery MPC speech, Nawaz Sharif said: “The nation was expecting Asim Bajwa to be arrested and was waiting for him to be asked to show how a serving officer amassed so many assets in 15-20 years. He should have been arrested but instead they arrested Shahbaz Sharif.”

Maryam Nawaz said in a tweet: “Make no mistake. Shahbaz Sharif has been arrested ONLY because he REFUSED to play in the hands of those who wanted to use him against his brother (Nawaz Sharif). He preferred standing behind prison bars than to stand against his brother. Shahbaz Sharif, aap ko SALAM.”

Ms Nawaz also held a hard-hitting presser in Lahore to condemn Shahbaz’s arrest. She said the drive against Imran Khan’s ‘fascist’ regime had begun from today and the MPC’s decision would be implemented at any cost. “We have the options of decisive long march and resignations,” she said and declared the drive against the `imposed’ PTI government would not stop even if it arrested her and other opposition leaders. She said Nawaz Sharif would lead this campaign.

She said all those wishing to split in the PML-N must be disappointed as Shahbaz’s support to his elder brother remained unwavering. “Shahbaz believes in the politics of reconciliation but he never defied his elder brother and the party Quaid. Imran is feeling extremely insecure fearing Shahbaz may replace him any moment therefore he got him arrested.”

Maryam also asked the institutions to withdraw their support to “this incompetent person (Imran)”. “The institutions that imposed an immature, incompetent, corrupt and inexperienced person like Imran Khan should think that he has landed the country in disaster. From the fall of Kashmir to the fall of the economy, this government has done blunders unprecedented in the history of the country,” she said.

Targeting retired Lt-Gen Asim Saleem Bajwa who is chairman of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Authority and special assistant to the premier on information, Maryam Nawaz said: “Has anybody any courage to summon Asim Bajwa for having huge assets? Despite having a business empire of 99 companies, Asim Saleem Bajwa is roaming free and no institution is ready to investigate him. The children of Nawaz and Shahbaz were tagged as dependents on their fathers only to institute false cases against them while the children of Asim Bajwa are accepted as independent with their own businesses,” she said and asked how come a salaried person made billions of rupees?

She said if the court did not take up Asim Bajwa’s case itself, it would be taken to the PDM to decide how to proceed against him.

Ms Nawaz also talked about how the judges were blackmailed and pressured to give decisions against them (PML-N leaders). “Those who cave in become Judge Arshad Malik and those who stand up are persecuted like Justice Qazi Faiz Isa and Justice Shaukat Siddiqui. We stand with the judiciary to liberate it from this pressure and also the media,” she vowed.

Talking about PML-N leader Muhammad Zubair’s meeting with army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, Maryam rejected it was held on her and Nawaz’s direction. “I respect DG ISPR but he should not have painted a private meeting as a political one. If I had shared all the contents of the meeting things would have got ugly,” she said.

In the LHC, a two-judge bench comprising Justice Sardar Ahmad Naeem and Justice Farooq Haider heard the arguments at length from NAB and Shahbaz’s counsels before dismissing the petition as withdrawn.

As the bench announced its decision, the legal team of the PML-N president sought permission from it to withdraw the petition, which was granted. It is usual to withdraw a petition for pre-arrest bail, if not allowed, so its decision may not prejudice the proceedings of post-arrest bail.

At the outset of the hearing, Shahbaz’s lead counsel Azam Nazir Tarar reiterated his arguments that the arrest after the filing of the reference was beyond any reason.

Justice Haider asked the counsel, if the suspects in the reference had been indicted, he said copies of the reference had been distributed among the suspects and the process for the indictment was in progress. He also alleged that the government wanted to see Shahbaz in jail before the upcoming local government’s elections.

Advocate Amjad Pervez, who also represented Shahbaz, argued the petitioner was not answerable for the deeds of his children as they were not dependent on him. He said as per the judgments of the superior courts the onus to prove the allegation of “benamidar” was on the prosecution.

The NAB failed to attach any documentary evidence against Shahbaz with its detailed reference, he said and added none of prime prosecution witnesses and the ‘approvers’ gave any statement against the petitioner.

He said NAB had not accused Shahbaz of being owner of his children’s properties till he filed the petition for the pre-arrest bail. He said the bureau changed its stance after reading the contents of the petition. He asked the bench to confirm the bail of Shahbaz.

NAB Special Prosecutor Syed Faisal Raza Bokhari, in his half-an-hour long arguments, said Mr Shahbaz had cooperated with the investigation team after he was granted pre-arrest bail by the court.

Rejecting a claim of Shahbaz, he said the investigation to the extent of the petitioner was still in progress. The prosecutor said Shahbaz failed to explain financial sources of buying flats in London. He said the family members of the petitioner also failed to respond to a questionnaire sent by the NAB.

Previously, Shahbaz was arrested on Oct 5, 2018 in the Ashiana-i-Iqbal Housing Scheme and later in the Ramzan Sugar Mills case. The LHC had released him on bail in both cases on Feb 17, 2019.

PML-N’s Ahsan Iqbal, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Khwaja Saad Rafiq, Rana Sanaullah, Marriyum Auranzeb and Muhammad Mehdi were among hundreds of charged workers were present on the court premises.

LAHORE: An accountability court on Tuesday granted the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) its request for a 14-day physical remand of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif in an assets beyond means and money-laundering case.

Shehbaz denied any wrongdoing and argued his case himself in the court. Following the arguments, Judge Jawad-ul-Hasan accepted NAB's request and ordered for Shehbaz to be presented in the court again on October 13.

Earlier, the opposition leader in the National Assembly, who spoke to the media after arriving at the court, said that his party will fight the “NAB-Niazi nexus”.

“NAB-Niazi nexus has failed, we will fight it,” said Shehbaz.

On Monday, NAB had arrested the former Punjab chief minister after the Lahore High Court (LHC) rejected his interim pre-arrest bail.

NAB case against Shehbaz

The anti-graft body has claimed that the assets of Shehbaz’s family ballooned from Rs2 million to Rs7 billion in the last 30 years, which they have failed to justify, The News reported on Tuesday.

This was detailed by the NAB in a document, which showed that in 1990, the opposition leader’s declared assets were worth Rs2.121 million which had grown to Rs7,328 million by 2018.

The NAB stated that in the year 1990, Shahbaz had declared his net assets at Rs2.121 million, whereas his net assets (including the assets of his minor children) had increased to Rs14.865 million in the year 1998.

‘Organised system of money-laundering’

The anti-corruption watchdog alleged that the PML-N president, in connivance with his co-accused family members, benamidars, front men, close associates, employees and money changers, developed an organised system of money-laundering for the accumulation of assets disproportionate to his known sources of income to the tune of Rs7,328 million.

After holding the public office (mostly during the years 2008 and 2018 when Shehbaz was the chief minister Punjab), his family acquired assets worth Rs 7,328 million, the NAB added.

While sharing the details of assets of the opposition leader, NAB Lahore further claimed that the Shehbaz family invested Rs2,770 million in 13 newly-established companies under the umbrella of the Sharif Group of Companies naming the few as M/s Sharif Feed, M/s Chiniot Power, M/s Al-Arabia Sugar Mills, M/s Sharif Dairy Farms, etc, without having known sources of income.

The accused established benami companies namely M/s Good Nature Trading Company Pvt Ltd, M/s Unitas Steel Pvt Ltd, M/s Waqar Trading Company and M/s Nisar Trading Concern (held in the name of Nisar Ahmad and Ali Ahmad, employees of the CM Secretariat) to launder disproportionate funds of Rs2,400.088 million. The accused also acquired properties including foreign assets along with 96-H, Model Town, Lahore, Nishat Lodge Doonga Gali, Villas at Whispering Pines, houses at DHA, Lahore worth Rs619.858 million.

The NAB claimed that to justify the alleged ill-gotten assets of Rs7,328 million, the accused and his family members/benamidars showed foreign remittances of Rs1,597 million and loans of Rs1,010 million, which proved to be fake as the remitters denied having sent any amount to the accused or his family members.

Moreover, loans were falsely shown as the source, while the lenders paid the employees of the Sharif Group, the NAB added.

‘Assets Rs7,328 million, income Rs584.444 million’

The statement added that the value of the Shahbaz Sharif family’s disproportionate assets acquired through laundered money comes to the tune of Rs6,122 million, with a present value of Rs7,328 million in the year 2018, whereas the total known sources of Shahbaz and his family were Rs584.444 million.

The aforesaid assets of the accused and his family members were found to be disproportionate to their known sources of income, it claimed.

The NAB concluded that during investigations, the declared and undeclared assets of the accused have been identified, for which they could not account for, as the sources of income claimed by them proved to be fictitious and unknown.

An accountability court in Lahore on Tuesday issued non-bailable arrest warrants of PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif's wife Nusrat Shehbaz and daughter Rabia Imran in money laundering case.
The arrest warrants were issued after Nusrat and Imran failed to appear for the hearing of the case, in which they are nominated. Meanwhile, Shehbaz's daughter Javeria Ali's request for permanent exemption from court hearings was accepted.

Condemning the development, PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said that the "selected government has crossed all limits [...] in political revenge".

In a statement posted on Twitter, Aurangzeb said: "Fascist and dictatorial tactics against political opponents will remain as a black stain on Mr Imran's forehead."

The court also granted the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) a 14-day physical remand of Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz, a day after he was arrested by the anti-graft body in the money laundering case.

On Monday, the Lahore High Court (LHC) rejected Shehbaz's bail plea, after which he was taken into custody from the court's premises, where a large number of PML-N workers and supporters had gathered ahead of the hearing.

Accountability judge Jawadul Hassan presided over the hearing today, during which Shehbaz also spoke. He alleged that a mockery was being made of the law. "This is the NAB-Niazi nexus [in play]," he added.

He said that his parents had worked hard and established the business, which he had then transferred to his children. "I do not take any salary or bonus. An allegation was leveled against me that my children benefited because of my [government] office.

"I submitted five documents in the Lahore High Court yesterday. We did not reduce the price of sugarcane in Punjab and I did not cause harm to the growers. I did not give any subsidy to my children's sugar mills from the treasury.

"My decisions caused a loss of millions of rupees to my brother (Nawaz Sharif) and to my son. I am a transgressor [but even] the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that a father is not responsible for his son and vice versa."

The judge asked him how much had the national treasury benefited from the decisions he made while he was in office to which Shehbaz replied that it was in "billions".

The PML-N president said that he had fixed excise duty of Rs2 on ethanol in 2011, adding that he had decided to impose the duty even though his son was setting up an ethanol plant.

"Rs2.5bn were deposited in the national treasury because of that," he told the court.

He said that his father had migrated to Pakistan from India and set up six factories within 18 months. "These properties are from that time," he said.

He said that he was "declaring under oath that he had not benefited from any scheme for the repayment of loans and that he had never used his office wrongfully".

"I did not take a salary of even one rupee in three decades or any ta-da," he claimed, adding that he also used to pay for his personal assistant's lodgings during his stays abroad.

During the proceedings, the court also directed that Shehbaz's performance report be made part of the case.

NAB's counsel, Asim Mumtaz, requested the court to grant the accountability body 15-day physical remand of Shehbaz. He was representing the accountability watchdog alongside NAB special prosecutor Barrister Usman Rashid Cheema.

"Shehbaz has himself said that his children depend on him. We asked him questions last night but he outright refused to answer them."

The court, however, granted a 14-day physical remand which would expire on October 13.

'Shehbaz arrested to manage elections'
Speaking to reporters outside the court, PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said that Shehbaz had been arrested to "paralyse the decisions" of the multiparty conference.

"Shehbaz has been arrested so the government can manage the elections in Gilgit Baltistan and the local elections [in Punjab]."

"Why [else] is there a need to arrest someone when the trial has started?" she questioned.

Money laundering case
The reference mainly accuses Shehbaz of being beneficiary of assets held in the name of his family members and benamidars who had no sources to acquire such assets. It says the suspects committed offences of corruption and corrupt practices as envisaged under the provisions of the National Accountability Ordinance 1999 and money laundering as delineated in the Anti-Money Laundering Act 2010.

A total of 20 people had been nominated in the reference, including four approvers Yasir Mushtaq, Muhammad Mushtaq, Shahid Rafiq and Aftab Mahmood.

The main suspects are Shehbaz’s wife Nusrat, his sons Hamza (leader of opposition in Punjab) and Suleman (absconder), and his daughters Rabia and Javeria.

According to NAB, Shehbaz accumulated assets worth Rs7,328mn — which are disproportionate to his known sources of income — "in connivance with his co-accused family members, benamidars, front persons and close associates [...] developed an organised system of money laundering".

The accountability watchdog further said that the accused in the case had "created fake/fictitious sources of income" in order to "justify the assets" which are beyond their known sources of income.

Shehbaz was arrested on October 5, 2018, in other cases — Ramzan Sugar Mills and Ashiana-i-Iqbal Housing Scheme. He was in NAB's custody when the inquiry into assets was authorised on Oct 23, according to Shehbaz's bail petition.

The Pakistani army needs to ask the opposition what exactly do they mean everytime someone utters the word "Selected", in fact even the Judiciary needs to start taking Suo Motto action, you cannot roam around in society and the streets of Pakistan freely while claiming the army conspired to install its own government

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan People’s Party chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari yesterday demanded immediate release of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif saying the government was panicked due to the alliance of the opposition parties.

He strongly condemned the arrest of Shehbaz Sharif and claimed Prime Minister Imran Khan regime was disturbed after the announcement of the Pakistan Democratic Movement. He said the government was resorting to “highhandedness against the opposition leaders.”

In a statement, Bilawal said that sending National Accountability Bureau notices and making arrests of opposition leaders showed that the government “is scared of the unity and demanded immediate release of Shehbaz Sharif and an end to use of NAB as a tool for political victimisation.”

The PPP chairman said that Pervez Musharraf was facing heinous and serious charges but no notice was issued nor was he arrested.

Russia to launch two new modules to Space Station

“Serious allegations are also levelled against Imran Khan’s sister and his special assistants but they are never summoned,” he added.

Bilawal made it clear that government could not impede people’s resistance by targeting the opposition leaders and challenged the regime to do whatever it could but the PDM’s struggle will not stop.

Earlier in the day, opposition leader was arrested in a money laundering case heard by the Lahore High Court. The NAB officials took him into custody from the court premises after his bail plea was rejected.

The arrest came as opposition parties have reignited efforts to remove PM Khan from office, vowing this month to launch a protest movement in the coming weeks demanding the government's resignation.

PM Khan was elected in 2018 on promises to rein in corruption and build a welfare state. But since taking power, the former cricketer has struggled to deliver on his campaign vows amid economic headwinds.

Trump, Biden lock horns in chaotic political debate

PPP Vice President Senator Sherry Rehman also condemned Shehbaz Sharif’s arrest. The Parliamentary Leader of the PPP in the Senate said: “NAB is being used as a tool of political victimisation, and its powers are both structured, and exercised, in a way that serves the PTI (Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf) agenda of selective accountability.”

She added: “It has been one year since Syed Khursheed Shah is in jail and no charges on him have been established yet. Similarly, Asif Ali Zardari is being summoned to the courts weekly during the Covid-19 pandemic, while federal ministers who have been identified for NAB cases are given a clean chit. If this is not the politics of revenge and witch hunting of opponents, then what is? Be it the BRT project, Sugar Commission or Malam Jaba scandal, they are being allowed to travel abroad or only their ministries are changed.”

The PPP leader said the federal government’s revenge politics had suddenly surged after the All Parties Conference and its timing was not lost on anyone.

UN urges end to fighting in Upper Karabakh

“By such actions, the federal government is only exposing its ulterior motives. Was the National Assembly Speaker informed that Opposition leader is being arrested? These tactics are being used to muzzle opposition voices but we will not let them disrespect the sanctity of the Parliament like this,” she said.

Sherry Rehman said unbiased organizations like the Pakistan Bar Council and Supreme Court Bar Association had condemned NAB’s unlawful arrests and abuses and even Human Rights Watch has taken notice of this.

Referring to the Supreme Court’s 2019 judgment in the Saad Rafique case on NAB, which questioned NAB’s legitimacy, she said: “NAB’s job is not just to make cases and run media trials in long investigative periods where even media moguls that question the government are not spared, like Mir Shakeel, it needs to provide evidence for those who it has made cases against.”

China honors female role models, groups in COVID-19 fight

NAB’s authority, she said, was only limited for targeting and harassing opposition members which was in complete disregard of the constitutional principle of fairness.

“It seems that NAB is following the principle of selective accountability, while conveniently ignoring the conduct of those allied with the government,” she added.

The lawmaker said the opposition was being pressurised and targeted after APC but “we will not let their witch hunt derail our plans.”

The Whole APC was created to stop these criminals facing their charges. By now everyone knows that if you are facing charges you will create an alliance or blame the army and when the arrest comes for your criminality, they say look, we are being arrested because the govt is scared of us. AZs charges date back to the Noora era and NS charges date back to BBs and AZs govts.

LAHORE: Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif on Monday complained to an accountability court about ‘inhumane’ treatment being meted out to him during physical custody of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).“I have been humiliated and subjected to cruelty during the remand despite my known medical history,” said Shahbaz narrating his grievance before presiding judge Jawadul Hassan.

The NAB produced the PML-N president before the court for hearing of the money laundering and illegal assets reference against him and his family.

He said it was a known fact that he had been suffering from a severe backache for the last 25 years.

“Initially the officials used to provide me food on a table in the detention room but now they deliberately put it on the ground so I feel pain picking it up,” Shahbaz told the court.

NAB chairman orders probe

The opposition leader further said that he was also denied help to turn a chair towards qiblah to offer prayers.

He alleged that all these acts were being done at the behest of Prime Minister Imran Khan and his adviser Mirza Shahzad Akbar. “If anything happens to me I would lodge a FIR against both of them,” he maintained before the court.

Judge Hassan expressed serious concern over the complaint by Shahbaz and warned the NAB that he would not tolerate any inhumane behaviour during the remand.

He observed that the suspect was a former chief minister of the province and the officials needed to treat him with respect.

A NAB prosecutor denied the allegations and said Shahbaz was not even kept in a lock-up but in a dispensary instead.

“If I pay a surprise visit to the lock-up it would be misconstrued as a meeting with the suspect,” the judge said and cautioned the prosecutor that he did not want to hear such complaints again.

Taking note of the complaint later in the day, NAB Chairman retired Justice Javed Iqbal ordered a probe to ascertain the `factual position’. An official statement said the NAB Chairman had already given instructions to all the regional bureaus to ensure self-respect of every accused during custody as per law.

HAMZA: The jail officials also produced Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly Hamza Shahbaz before the court after a gap of several hearings as he tested negative for Covid-19 after 20 days of being infected.

A representative of the foreign office filed a report before the court saying the service of the arrest warrants against Nusrat Shahbaz, Suleman Shahbaz and Rabia Imran had not been executed at their addresses in London.

Advocate Amjad Pervez requested the court not to issue non-bailable arrest warrants of Rabia, daughter of Shahbaz, as she would join the trial proceedings.

Judge Hassan, however, turned down the request and observed that the warrants would be withdrawn after the appearance of the suspect.

The judge adjourned further hearing till Oct 13 and also issued fresh non-bailable arrest warrants for Nusrat and Suleman.

Shahbaz has been in the NAB custody since his arrest on Sept 28 after the Lahore High Court dismissed his pre-arrest bail petition as withdrawn. His first remand would also expire on Oct 13.

The police made strict security arrangements outside the judicial complex as a result commuters and pedestrians had to face a great deal of inconvenience.

LAHORE: An accountability court on Wednesday ordered the provision of 'B' category facilities to PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif, in accordance with the law.

Admin Judge Jawad-ul-Hasan heard the petition regarding provision of facilities to Shahbaz. The court gave its verdict during the hearing of the petition and ordered jail administration to provide facilities to the PML-N president in accordance with Pakistan Prison Rules 1978.

While giving a verdict on the facilities to be provided, in view of Shahbaz's medical history, the court ordered jail authorities to arrange a separate room, a bed, a chair, food from home and other facilities.

It be recalled that the leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly was arrested on charges of having assets beyond known sources of income and money laundering and the court had sent him to Kot Lakhpat Jail on judicial remand.

PML-N had held Prime Minister Imran Khan responsible for not providing adequate facilities to Shahbaz Sharif in jail.

It may also be recalled that the prime minister had said that the world would see a different Imran Khan now and no "dacoit" would be given a production order, nor he would be given a VIP jail, and he would be detained in a jail for common men.

So judges come into save the crook. The LHC is the most corrupt court in PK. The judges should be in jail with this crook

LAHORE: An accountability court on Wednesday directed the superintendent of Kot Lakhpat Jail to allow home-cooked food, medicines, a mattress and a revolving chair to Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif in addition to other facilities permitted under the rules.

The court had on Oct 20 sent Mr Shehbaz to jail on judicial remand after rejecting the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) request for his further physical remand in a money laundering and illegal assets reference.

PML-N’s Deputy Secretary Attaullah Tarar, MPA Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan and Khalil Tahir Sindhu, all practicing lawyers, appeared on behalf of the opposition leader before the court.

They complained to the court that Mr Shehbaz had been denied basic facilities in the jail by the authorities at the behest of Prime Minister Imran Khan. They said the opposition leader had been subjected to vindictive actions in violation of his fundamental rights.

Approver accepts laundering $2.4m for Shehbaz

One of the approvers against PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif in a money laundering and assets beyond means case has claimed that he carried out 24 money laundering transactions for the Shehbaz family between 2008 and 2009.

In a statement that transpired on Saturday, the approver Shahid Rafiq said one of the accused in the case Qasim Qayyum used to look after the foreign remittances of Shehbaz’s family in 2008.

He claimed that the money was sent from abroad through telegraphic transfers (TT) in the name of Qasim Qayyum’s employees. These TTs were received by MS Usman International Money Exchange.

Rafiq said he started a money exchange business in 2004 together with his cousin Aftab Mehmood. He said Mehmood was also involved in illegal transfer of money.

Shahid Rafiq said he arranged 24 TTs for the Shehbaz family between 2008 and 2009. The money, he said, was later transferred to the bank accounts of Shehbaz’s wife Nusrat Shehbaz, Shehbaz’s daughter Rabia Imran and his two sons – Suleman and Hamza.

He said he used to get commission on each money transfer. According to Rafiq, he laundered $2.43 million [$2,430,145] for the Shehbaz Sharif family from 2008 to 2009.

Rafiq gave his confessional statement before a judicial magistrate and National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman. An approver is a participant in or accomplice to a crime who is being tried and who gives evidence for the prosecution against his or her confederates.

According to NAB, Shehbaz laundered billions of rupees from various anonymous accounts through his front men, employees and money changers. NAB claimed that Shehbaz’s assets in 1990 were worth Rs2.1 million whereas his assets and those of his children were worth Rs18 million in 1998.

However, according to NAB, the assets of the Shehbaz family later multiplied phenomenally and Shehbaz and his sons set up nine business units from 2008 to 2018. An inquiry was launched against Shehbaz after receiving a complaint from the State Bank of Pakistan’s Financial Monitoring Unit.

The rope is getting tighter against these thief brothers and their criminal family.

Congratulations to NAB.

LAHORE: An accountability court in Lahore on Wednesday indicted PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif and others in a case pertaining to money laundering.

The court has summoned National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to present their evidence in the next hearing. The suspects, however, pleaded not guilty.

Speaking to media outside the courtroom, Shahbaz dismissed the NAB cases as“baseless” and termed them politically-motivated.

What is the money laundering case?

The former chief minister is accused of accumulating assets worth Rs7,328 million in connivance with his co-accused family members, benamidars, front persons and close associations and for developing an organized system of money laundering.

The anti-graft watchdog has nominated a total of 20 individuals in the reference – Shahbaz’s wife Nusrat, his sons Hamza and Suleman, and daughters Rabia Imran and Javeria Ali.

NAB accuses the PML-N president of committing corruption as envisaged under the National Accountability Ordinance 1999 and money laundering as outlined in the Anti-Money Laundering Act 2010. It says that the accused “created fake sources of income” to “justify the assets” acquired beyond known sources of income.

On September 29, Shahbaz was arrested by NAB after the Lahore High Court (LHC) rejected his bail in the money laundering case.

The PML-N president was previously arrested on October 5, 2018 in another case pertaining to Ramzan Sugar Mills and Ashiana Housing Scheme. He was in the anti-graft watchdog’s custody when the inquiry into money laundering was authourised.

LAHORE: PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif underwent medical tests after a check up at the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Oncology Lahore (INMOL) on Thursday.

After reports of the tests were issued, Shahbaz was discharged from the hospital and shifted back to Kot Lakhpat Jail.

According to APP, the Opposition leader today underwent a positron emission tomography (PET) scan and other medical tests. His personal physicians were also present in the hospital.

It is pertinent to mention here that a special medical board headed by the executive director of the Punjab Institute of Neurosciences (PINS) is currently conducting his treatment on a court order.

The PML-N leader is a cancer survivor as he was diagnosed with a rare Adenocarcionoid cancer in the appendix.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had arrested Shahbaz Sharif last year in a money laundering and assets beyond means case.

Shahbaz tells court he is 'not feeling well'
The development comes a day after Shahbaz appeared at a court hearing during which he requested early leave, saying he does not feel well. The permission, however, was not granted as the court said that if he had been on bail then it would have been a separate issue.

"Since you are in judicial custody, this facility can not be granted as it is a legal requirement to record statements of the witnesses in your presence," it added.

When Shahbaz's counsel submitted that his client's presence was not necessary as witnesses present in the court were not related to his client, the court questioned if 10 accused adopt the same stance then should they be allowed to leave.

The hearing was held in the Ashiana-i-Iqbal Housing Scheme case.

The court had indicted 10 accused including Shahbaz in the case, with NAB alleging in the reference that Shehbaz, when he was the chief minister of Punjab, misused his authority by unlawfully assuming powers of Board of Directors of Punjab Land Development Company (PLDC).

It alleged he in connivance with his co-suspects awarded a contract to an ineligible proxy firm that resulted in the failure of the Ashiana housing scheme, causing a major loss to the public exchequer and depriving 61,000 applicants of houses.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has given the nod to conduct another inquiry against PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif. However, the top graft buster has also decided to close an inquiry against another PML-N leader Ishaq Dar.

NAB made this decision on Wednesday at its executive board meeting (EBM) held at the NAB headquarters in Islamabad. NAB Chairman Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal chaired the meeting.

The EBM discussed the closure of Roosevelt Hotel in New York after 100 years of operation and decided to review the terms of reference (TORs) of the committee constituted by the government in this regard.

It also approved filing two corruption references respectively against former Capital Development Authority (CDA) chairman Imtaiz Inayat Elahi and others and Karachi Municipal Corporation former director general parks and horticulture Liaquat Ali Khan and others.

Imtaiz Inayat Elahi is accused of misusing his authority and allotting two canceled commercial plots. He allegedly inflicted Rs200 million losses to the exchequer. Liaquat Ali Khan is accused of illegally allotting a plot reserved for welfare activities.

The EBM gave the nod to conduct eight inquiries against various personalities.

These include Shehbaz Sharif and others; Riaz Lal G and others; National Highway Authority (NHA) former officer Ali Sher Mehsood and others; Public Private Partnership Authority CEO Malik Ahmed Khan and others and officers and officials of the Rawalpindi Development Authority.

The other people who will face NAB inquiries include Health Ministry Joint Secretary Asadullah Faiz; officers and officials of the Small Dams Organization and others; management and others of the National Food Security and Research and the officers and officials of the CDA.

The EBM also decided to refer investigations against various officers and officials to their respective organizations and ministries for departmental action.

It referred an investigation against officials of the National Database Registration Authority (NADRA) to the Ministry of Interior; two cases to the CDA and cases against officers and officials of the NHA to the Ministry of Communication.

The EBM also decided to close the inquiries against former finance minister Ishaq Dar; Federal Board of Revenue former chairman Tariq Bajwa and others; officers and officials of the Irrigation Department and Nasir Mehmood Abbasi owing to absence of evidence.

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Wednesday granted bail to PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif in the assets beyond means case, Geo News reported.

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif was granted bail in both the assets beyond means and money laundering cases by the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday.

The LHC had earlier reserved its verdict after hearing arguments from both parties. The bail was later granted against two surety bonds worth Rs5 million each

NAB’s special prosecutor, Syed Faisal Raza Bukhari, implored the court during today's hearing that Shehbaz’s family had assets of around Rs16.5 million before 1990, which increased to more than Rs7 billion in 2018. He added that there are nine benamidars in the case which also made assets.

“When Shehbaz Sharif was asked about Rs124 million, he replied it was profit gained from various businesses but when NAB asks him, he stays quiet,” said the prosecutor.

He further stated in court that money transfers are not sent into the opposition leader’s accounts when he is holding public office and elaborated that Nusrat Shehbaz Sharif has assets of Rs229 million and received 26 transfers in her account.

The NAB prosecutor further argued that Rs50 million had been spent on Shehbaz’s camp office, which was a residential property owned by Shehbaz’s family. “When NAB asked how the house was purchased, they did not reply.”

The counsel for the PML-N president informed the court that all assets had been declared, to which the accountability watchdog’s prosecutor replied that the bureau was not referring to the assets which had been declared, but rather the source of income through which the assets were made or purchased.

NAB’s prosecutor further stated that transfers were received by most family members of Shehbaz and funds were also transferred in the accounts of Punjab’s CM Secreteriat and accounts operated by Haroon Yousaf.

He further prayed to the court that the PML-N president was the main accused in the money laundering and assets beyond means case, and his bail should be dismissed.

The news of the PML-N president - incarcerated since September 28, last year - being granted bail was hailed by many party leaders including Maryam Nawaz.

The PML-N vice president posted a picture of her uncle on Twitter, thanking the Almighty for his release.

On Tuesday, Shehbaz Sharif’s counsel Azam Nazir Tarar completed arguments for his bail, claiming that NAB has failed to come up with any evidence to establish the charges

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader sought post-arrest bail on medical and hardship grounds.

The bench heard detailed arguments wherein the petitioner’s counsel Azam Nazir Tarar contended that NAB had alleged that Shehbaz had failed to establish the source of around Rs260 million.

He said NAB's claim regarding acquisition of assets through money laundering had nothing to do with the reality as the petitioner had provided all relevant documents to prove his innocence.

The counsel said Shehbaz had been in the custody of NAB for long but it had failed to collect any evidence of corruption, corrupt practice, kickback, commission, misuse or abuse of public office or personal gain by him.

He contended that the former chief minister was 70 years old and suffering from multiple diseases, including cancer, but the conduct of the jail authorities and health department had been callous as unjustifiable delays were caused in making requisite arrangements, which affected his health adversely.

He said that in the peculiar background of cancer and various other ailments at this age, the petitioner’s detention might prove to be hazardous to life or cause irreversible harm to his health. Hence, the petitioner was also entitled to bail at the anvil of the fundamental right of life and liberty, he contended.

He implored that the petitioner had been behind the bars since September 28 last year but his trial was still at the initial stage.

As many as 110 prosecution witnesses are cited, whereas the reference comprises voluminous record spanning over 58 volumes, as per a report submitted by the trial court to the Supreme Court in a case regarding the bail of a co-accused.

It would require at least 10 months for the conclusion of the trial provided full cooperation by the prosecution and all the 10 accused represented through separate counsel.

LAHORE: A member of the Lahore High Court (LHC) division bench that granted post-arrest bail to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif in the money laundering and assets beyond means cases denied having signed the judgment on Friday.

The LHC division bench headed by Justice Muhammad Sardar Sarfraz Dogar heard the bail plea filed by Shehbaz, while Justice Asjad Javed Ghural was its second member.

The LHC bench, on April 14, after hearing detailed arguments from both sides, first reserved its decision and then after 15 minutes rang the bell while sitting in chamber.

Upon hearing the bell a court staffer entered into the judge’s chamber and came out announcing that post-arrest bail had been granted to Shehbaz.

Following the announcement, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML) lawmakers began congratulating each other. Shortly after, PML-N leader Rana Sana Ullah also addressed the media and came down hard on the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) conduct.

However, both the aforesaid judges are yet to forward their own judgments to LHC chief justice Muhammad Qasim Khan, where a third judge will be nominated, who will decide the matter after reading the independent judgments of both the judges.

It is also worth mentioning that the bench, hearing NAB cases, was dissolved. Both the judges were transferred to other districts.

The former Punjab CM had filed the petition on medical grounds, the delay in the conclusion of the trial and other hardships.

The lahori court is a joke. can imagine them including the panjabs finest 'lawyers' guzzling celebratory curry in lahore after this verdict and handing out the jalebis

SS has admitted that they were his accounts and people who are supposedly the senders from abroad have never left the country and the amounts are running into 100s of millions. Now i dont now about you, i have never had a rp put into my accounts by mistake, so SS is guilty and only the thugs of the Lohaar High Court can save the Shifty crook.

LHC again coming to the rescue of crooks. The biggest curse on Pakistan is its dysfunctional, corrupt and incompetent judiciary.

Ayattulah Khoemeni had many Iranian judges and generals executed when he overthrew the Shah. Why can't the same thing happen in Pakistan to our Judges, Generals and Politicians?

The LHC is full of Noora criminals. The bail that never was has become even more murkier as the judge that refused bail has been transferred and has said through judgment that SS cannot be given bail on merit and whats more the other judge lied about his consent to the bail. Now I am no law expert but should this other judge be in front of SJC

LAHORE: Judges of a Lahore High Court (LHC) bench on Saturday finally came up with a split decision on the post-arrest bail petition of Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif, sending the matter to the chief justice for the nomination of a referee judge.

Justice Sardar Mohammad Sarfraz Dogar, who headed the bench, allowed the petition while its other member Justice Asjad Javed Ghural dismissed the same on merits. In his dissenting order, Justice Ghural also accused the senior judge of issuing the bail granting short order ‘unilaterally’.

“It is shocking for me to observe here that it has been mentioned in the beginning paragraph of the said order that unanimous order qua grant of bail to the petitioner was announced, which is against the ground reality,” said Justice Ghural.

“In fact after hearing the parties, when my learned brother sought my consent qua allowing the petition, I refused in the court whereupon the announcement was deferred for consultation in the chamber where I again straightaway refused but surprisingly, my learned brother unilaterally announced his decision through his naib qasid granting bail to the petitioner,” he added in his dissenting note.

Justice Ghural accuses senior bench member of issuing bail granting short order ‘unilaterally’

The judge mentioned that he had brought the situation to the notice of the LHC chief justice a few minutes later, but “my learned brother sent me the short order for signature for which he had no occasion at all”.

“This is very unfortunate and rare example in the judicial history, which could not be expected from a senior member heading the division bench,” said the dissenting judge.

After discussing the facts of the case, Justice Ghural observed: “Suffice is to say that sufficient incriminating material is available on the record to connect the petitioner with the alleged offence and thus, he is not entitled to the relief claimed for.”

Justice Dogar in his order stated a “unanimous order regarding grant of bail was announced” but when the short order for the petitioner’s release was placed before Justice Ghural for signature he disclosed that he intended to give his dissenting view.

“Therefore we are rendering separate orders and after completion of the same, matter shall be placed before the chief justice for nomination of a referee judge,” said the senior member of the division bench.

Granting bail to Shehbaz, Justice Dogar observed that from the perusal of reference, it was found that no allegation of commission of offence of corruption, corrupt practice, kickbacks, or misuse of authority for personal gains had been levelled against the petitioner and even no charge in this regard had been framed.

He also referred to a report of the trial court, which said the trial would take about 10 to 12 months to be concluded. “The petitioner is a public representative and also a leader of opposition in the National Assembly who has to perform his constitutional and legal duties in this regard. He is a previously non-convict and undergoing pre-trial incarceration in the instant case,” observed Justice Dogar.

The judge said keeping the petitioner behind bars for an indefinite period before the conclusion of the trial would not serve the ends of justice. He also relied upon a Supreme Court judgement passed in 2020 in a case of former railways minister Khwaja Saad Rafiq and his brother Khwaja Salman Rafiq.

Dogar is Another judge that is being blackmailed by Nooras, why would he claim it was a unanimous decision when he knew it wasnt. The LHC must be sacked in its entirety and new clean justices appointed. SS and his family are as guilty as hell, they cant be saved without the LHC breaking the law.

ISLAMABAD: Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Political Communication Dr Shahbaz Gill on Sunday said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was telling lies on the issue of bail of jailed opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif, adding the government had always paid due resp*ect to courts and honoured its decisions.

“The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf has no influence on the courts,” M Gill said while speaking at a press conference along with PTI lawyer Syed Ali Bukhari.

PML-N information secretary Marriyum Aurangzeb reacted to the remarks of Mr Gill and demanded contempt of court proceedings against him for what she called “twisting the judgement” of Lahore High Court.

Opposition party accused of telling lies; contempt of court proceedings sought against PM’s aide

The SAPM said the court decisions must not be misinterpreted as Maryam Aurangzeb’s remarks that bail had earlier been granted to Shehbaz Sharif was aimed to give an impression of a change in the decision. “The news about the bail of Shehbaz Sharif was released by TV channels on their own which has exposed PML-N leaders’ lies and now they are making hue and cry over ‘injustice’ with Shehbaz Sharif.”

Mr Gill said total assets of Shahbaz Sharif were worth Rs2.1 million in 1990 which increased to Rs25m in 1998 and further rose to Rs7 billion from 2008 to 2018. “Similarly, total assets of Hamza Shehbaz amounted to Rs10m in the past which are touching the figure of Rs530m today. Instead of the father, heavy amounts were transferred to the sons’ accounts through telegraphic transfer (TTs),” he added.

The SAPM said a heavy amount was transferred in the account of Hamza Shehbaz through 23 TTs and Rs1.5bn was transferred in the account of Salman Shahbaz through same way.

He said there were a total of 1,103 prisoners in Punjab who were much older in age than Shehbaz Sharif, adding that the PML leader’s plea for his release on the ground of being a senior citizen was against the spirit of Supreme Court decision in such a case of elderly prisoners, besides being discrimination against elderly prisoners.

He said there were serious cases against Shehbaz Sharif of looting national wealth by the Sharif family in 1990 and from 2008 to 2018 with solid evidence.

About the sugar scam, the SAPM said the opposition was earlier making political point scoring against the government through baseless allegations about inaction against PTI leader Jahangir Tareen.

He said the tax revenue had increased by 100 per cent following the sugar commission’s report.

Later, PML-N leader Marriyum Aurangzeb said two judges of the LHC had announced grant of bail to Shahbaz Sharif, and asked who had given authority to Shahbaz Gill to interpret the judges of the high court.

She also expressed dissatisfaction that despite passage of four days to the judgement, written orders of the court regarding bail of Shehbaz Sharif had not been issued yet.

The PML-N leader also criticised Prime Minister Imran Khan for what she called “failed economic policies of the government” leading to frequent change of finance minister. “Now Shaukat Tarin, who was finance minister in the Pakistan Peoples Party finance government, has been picked for the job. Is there no one in the PTI to do this job,” she said.

Only in the last week prices (of essential commodities) increased by 19 per cent,” she claimed and added that the price hike crisis would be over only when the prime minister would be replaced.

Justice Ghural has made it almost impossible for Shahbaz to get bail on merit with his detailed judgement he has blocked all arguments that could be used to get Shahbaz free on bail. It is interesting to see the bureaucracy and courts slowly starting to move against the Sharif's.

LAHORE: The Lahore Hight Court (LHC) on Thursday approved the bail of Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif.

As per Geo News, the bail was approved by the judges unanimously.

At the onset of the hearing, the court asked the NAB prosecutor to present his arguments in the case. However, it opposed the arguments given by Shahbaz’s lawyer Azam Nazeer Tarar.

“Yesterday, Shahbaz Sharif's lawyers did not see that the bail was rejected after approval,” said NAB's lawyer, at which Tarar objected.

To this, the court also told Tarar that it had issued certain directions to him. Shahbaz’s lawyer told the court that if NAB had objections, it can issue a contempt notice to him.

Seeing the verbal scuffle between them, the bench warned that it would adjourn the hearing if both lawyers continued. Tarar then took a back seat and the court allowed the NAB lawyer to continue with his arguments.

The NAB prosecutor told the bench that Shahbaz's five sons and daughter are absconding.

“Suleman Shehbaz, Nusrat Shahbaz, Rabia Imran, Haroon Yousuf, Syed Tahir Naqvi and Ali Hamid are absconding,” said NAB’s lawyer Faisal Raza Bukhari.

Bukhari told the court that the high court had instructed Nusrat Shehbaz to be part of the case via her lawyer. He added that NAB does not oppose the move.

The prosecutor then told the court that NAB had send call-up notices to the accused in the case, but no received response.

Bukhari told the bench that in 1990, Shehbaz had showed assets of Rs2.1 million and in 1998 they had risen to Rs10.48 million. He then claimed that from 2010-2018 the Model Town residence of Shehbaz was turned into a camp office for the chief minister.

Bukhari said that the opposition leader showed assets of Rs7.32 billion and all the assets were gained after 2005.

The NAB prosecutor claimed that 23 telegraphic transfers (TTs) were made to Hamza Shahbaz’s account. He added that Rabia and Javeria had received telegraphic transfers worth millions too.

The NAB lawyer further told the bench that they had found 12 TTs worth Rs112 million in contractual employee Nasir Ahmed’s account.

“Rs 1.8 billion was transferred in Good Nature company’s account. These companies were operated by Haroon Yousuf,” said the NAB prosecutor.

He added that when Hamza would campaign, people would transfer funds to PML-N’s account. He claimed that Hamza had brought a bullet proof car from that money.

At this, the court asked NAB if they had added the bulletproof car accusation to the charge sheet. The NAB lawyer then told the court that it was not included in the charge sheet.

“Rs55 million was received as party funds. A cheque from a private society had also come from the party funds,” said the NAB prosecutor.

The court then asked the NAB lawyer to tell them what details had been after investigating the TTs.

At this, the NAB lawyer told the court that the TTs were sent by people who said they had never left Pakistan. He added that some did not even have a passport.

“Which country were the TTs made from?”asked the court.

The NAB lawyer told the court that the TTs were from Dubai and the United Kingdom.

“For what reason were these TTs sent,” the court then asked.

“They have no response for this,” interjected Shahbaz’s counsel Amjad Pervaiz upon the court’s questioning.

However, Bukhari told the court that their case was of assets beyond means.

“NAB has no response for why and what reason the money had come,” said Shahbaz’s counsel at NAB’s response.

Hearing the response, Justice Baqar Najafi asked the NAB lawyer again if the body had investigated the TTs and where they had come from.

“When we investigated them, people said they had not gone out of the country,” Bukhari told the judge. He added that when they further investigated the transactions, they found they had come from the UAE.

“There must be a source who can tell how and who sent the money,” the court then asked the NAB lawyer.

“The money that used to come must have come for a reason, tell us,” said Justice Najafi. He added that when an asset beyond means case is registered, NAB looks at the illegal ways through which money was transferred.

“How do you call the [transactions] anonymous?” asked Justice Najafi.

At this, the NAB prosecutor said that Shahbaz does not have a source of income. He added that Salman Shahbaz had revealed his assets in 1995, 1996 and 2008.

“These are assets of Salman Shahbaz what relation do they have with Shahbaz Sharif?” asked Justice Najafi.

At this, the NAB prosecutor stated that they are the Benami transaction makers of Shahbaz Sharif. He added that it was the former Punjab CM that turned his wife’s residence into a camp office.

At this, Shahbaz’s lawyer intervened and said that the former CM still lives in that house.

Upon hearing this, Justice Najafi quipped that these days Shahbaz Sharif lives in jail. The judge’s quirky response resulted in a burst of laughter in the courtroom.

After the NAB prosecutor wrapped up his arguments, Shahbaz’s lawyer Amjad Pervaiz came to the rostrum and told the bench that NAB had declared members of Shahbaz Sharif’s family benamidars with malafide intentions.

Pervaiz claimed that NAB registered the asset beyond means case under pressure from the government. He added that not even one witness had testified against his client.

The three-member bench after hearing the arguments issued bail to the opposition leader against two surety bonds of Rs5 million each.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President and Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday met Chinese Ambassador Nong Rong and British High Commissioner Dr Christian Turner in Islamabad.

The meeting with the Chinese ambassador took place at the Chinese High Commission. On the occasion, Nong Rong said that Nawaz Sharif is an old friend of China and Beijing does not forget its friends. He also expressed good wishes for the former premier.

The ambassador appreciated Shehbaz's visit and accorded him with a warm welcome, adding that he already knew of Shehbaz because of his "Punjab speed" fame in China. He said that Shehbaz's hard work as Punjab chief minister was very impressive and praiseworthy.

Nong said he could not keep himself from praising Shehbaz for his ability to deliver because he knew this from personal experience as he was a mayor in China himself. He said the two countries can benefit from Shehbaz Sharif's idea, methods and performance in future.

The Chinese envoy said that he endorsed Shehbaz's perspective that nations cannot progress without industrialisation and industrial production. "For this, the philosophy of industrial zones can take this vision forward."

Referring to his visit to the Sahiwal power project, he praised it and appreciated Shehbaz Sharif's efforts. He said the project is considered the most speedily built project not just in Pakistan but all over the world which was inaugurated In May 2017, six months before its scheduled time.

The ambassador invited Shehbaz to China to attend the 100 years of the Chinese Communist Party in July.

The opposition leader in the lower hosue of parliament thanked the ambassador for the invitation and assured that Pakistan and PML-N will ensure that this day is celebrated wholeheartedly. He also pledged that the Communist Party Of China and PML-N will grow closer and their ties will grow stronger.

On the occasion, the former Punjab chief minister said that China is like a second home to Pakistanis and vice versa, expressing how the relationship between the iron brothers would strengthen and deepen in the coming days.

Calling China an exemplary partner and friend of Pakistan, he said that during Nawaz Sharif's term in the government this friendship transformed into a lasting and strong economic partnership. This, he said, marked a new era of the Pakistan-China ties that turned the friendship that is deeper than oceans higher than the Himalayas and sweeter than honey into a bond of iron brotherhood.

Shehbaz, while thanking China and its people, said that China helped Pakistan in an exemplary way during the pandemic. "From sending masks, medics and gear to donating vaccines, thus role of China should be recorded in golden words in the history," he added.

The PML-N president said that the Belt and Road Initiative's (BRI) flagship project the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is not just an instrument of prosperity for Pakistan but for the entire region.

He paid rich tribute to the resolve of President Xi Jinping and the commitment of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif that could transform the future of not just the people of the two countries but of the region.

"Nawaz Sharif made it possible only within three years that majority of CPEC projects were either completed or were nearing completion. All this was achieved during an ailing economy and 18 hours of power outages but China held Pakistan's hand and took it on the path to prosperity and development," he added.

Meanwhile, Shehbaz also expressed gratitude to Almighty God that the Chinese diplomats were safe in the recent Quetta blast. "This was a conspiracy to derail the ties between two countries."

He said that the protection of all Chinese people in Pakistan is the responsibility of the Pakistani government. He said that special development zones are the solution to all problems for which work needed to be done day in and day out.

This was Shehbaz's first meeting with the Chinese ambassador after his appointment which was held in a pleasant, lively and friendly environment, according to the official statement.

Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Secretary General Ahsan Iqbal, Senator Mushahid Hussain and PML-N Secretary Information Marriyum Aurangzeb also accompanied him.

Meanwhile, Shehbaz also met British High Commissioner to Pakistan Dr Christian Turner at the British High Commission in Islamabad.

The former chief minister appreciated the UK assistance to Pakistan during the new coronavirus pandemic. He extended his condolences to the UK envoy for the Covid-19 deaths in Britain. "At a time when the pandemic has gripped the entire world, mankind needs to work together against this scourge as it concerns the survival of all humanity."

He said that Britain and Pakistan have a long history of bilateral relations, adding that the UK is like a second home for Pakistanis. "The Pakistani community in the UK is playing a vital role in strengthening and promoting ties between the two countries," he said, addeding that boosting cooperation between the two countries is in their mutual interest.

Shahbaz extended his condolences to the Duke of Edinburgh on the death of Prince Philip and conveyed his condolences to the royal family.

Issues of regional importance, especially the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan, were also discussed during the meeting. Dr Turner also wished Shehbaz a happy Ramazan.

Granted. The LHC are their slaves and the Nooras have tapes on each of these crooked judges

The Lahore High Court on Friday gave Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif "one time" permission on medical grounds to fly abroad for treatment.

A hearing to remove his name from the government's no-fly blacklist was held today to deliberate the matter, which was presided over by Justice Ali Baqar Najafi.

Shahbaz had approached the court to grant him permission as a cancer survivor to seek treatment abroad. In his petition, moved through Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar and Advocate Amjad Pervez, Shahbaz had stated that after getting bail in Ashiana Housing and Ramzan Sugar Mills cases, he went abroad and came back.

During today's court proceedings, the PML-N president produced a return ticket showing his intent to do the same this time around.

The prosecution's counsel argued that treatment can be sought in Pakistan but the defence counsel, Amjaz Pervez, stated that Shahbaz had sought treatment abroad earlier and returned.

He argued that his client has obtained bail in all three cases against him — the Ramzan Sugar Mills, Ashiana Housing Scheme, and assets beyond known sources of income cases — and now wishes to exercise his right as a citizen of Pakistan and continue treatment abroad.

It was also argued that an appointment with Shahbaz's doctor, who had been managing his case, was already in place for Monday, and will be hard to secure at another time due to coronavirus. It was further argued that flights to and from UK could possibly be cancelled in the coming days.

Shahbaz stated that neither is he a "smuggler", nor a "terrorist" for him to be prevented from going abroad. He said that his name was added by the government to the blacklist with "ill intent".

The Opposition leader said that "as soon as his doctors allow" him, he will return to Pakistan.

The court decided to allow Shahbaz to go abroad on medical grounds from May 8 to July 3 and scheduled a hearing for July 5 to continue deliberation of the removal of his name from the blacklist.

'Govt to pursue all legal avenues against decision'
Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry expressed the government's resolve to "seek all legal avenues against the decision".

"The prime minister has pointed out the weaknesses of the justice system many times," he said.

"Shahbaz Sharif has been involved in money laundering worth billions," he said, adding: "For him to run away like this would be great misfortune [for the country]."

Chaudhry said that Shahbaz had provided a guarantee in the past for the return of his brother, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, "but what became of that?"

The minister said that the Opposition "is not ready to participate in electoral reforms because this rotten system is one that serves their interests".

'Shahbaz's name was never on the Exit Control List'

PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb, responding to Fawad Chaudhry's remarks, said that Shahbaz's name was never in the Exit Control List (ECL).

"Imran [Khan] sahab had the names of his political opponents added to a blacklist. Shahbaz Sharif's name was added in the blacklist out of a desire for political revenge," she said.

She said that the move by the government was "illegal", and the blacklist is one that typically features names of terrorists and anti-state individuals.

Aurangzeb said that the court kept in mind Shahbaz's past history of travel and then pronounced the verdict, allowing him to travel once more.

"The allegations of billions of rupees worth of money laundering have been left behind on the containers [you stood atop on] and were never proven in any court of law," she added.

'Surprising verdict'
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Communication Shahbaz Gill termed the verdict "surprising".

"First [Shahbaz] provided a false guarantee for this brother, allowing him to flee abroad and never return. Now he has been declared an absconder.

"Should he not have been in jail for being an accomplice to an absconder? And in their 35-year reign, they never built one hospital that could serve their treatment needs?" Gill wrote.

He then proceeded to share Shahbaz's statement of guarantee at the time Nawaz Sharif was seeking permission to go abroad for his own treatment.

"This is that sworn affidavit under which Nawaz was allowed to flee and never return. And now he wishes to flee himself. Could he not seek treatment in any Pakistani hospital? How many times will these people cheat the nation? How many times will they lie?"

The biggest obstacle to Pakistan’s progress is its uber-corrupt judiciary. The LHC is owned by the Sharif and the Sharif family can get whatever it wants.

Now, Shahbaz is going abroad. Imran Khan has been too soft on these crooks; he needs to man up and sent all these crooks to the gallows. Imran is letting the judiciary run its course, thinking Pakistan is a democracy and courts are free. This is his biggest mistake. I really wish we get a leader that rules with an iron-first and does not show any cowardice.

In a democratic country, judiciary is supposed to be neutral, without control and powerful. Nobody from other branches should hold any authority over them or interfere in their business. Imran would be labeled a dictator if he tried. Unfortunately in our case our judiciary is corrupt. That still does t give anybody a pass to go against their decision.

The bench needs to be cleared of the corrupt elements. Don’t know how long that takes or if it’s even possible. But if that happens, I think we can get to our goal of eradicating these crooks.

Shehbaz Sharif off-loaded from Doha-bound flight despite court orders

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif was off-loaded from a flight leaving for Doha, Qatar early Saturday morning.

The PML-N leader was granted "one time" permission to fly abroad on medical grounds by the Lahore High Court on Friday (May 7).

Shehbaz, who is a cancer patient, was scheduled to leave for Doha from the Lahore airport today onboard a foreign airline. After spending some days in quarantine in Doha, he had planned to fly to London where he was to consult his doctors.

As he showed up to the airport early this morning, the airline issued him a boarding card. However, when he arrived at the immigration counter, he was told he cannot board the plane. Shehbaz asked the officials the reason and told them about the court orders that allow him to travel abroad.

Shehbaz informed them about the high court order for his one-time travel permit. PML-N leader Ata Tarar also read out the judicial order to the officials.

The immigration officials said the court orders are okay but their system needs to be updated for him to leave the country. "Your name is still on the blacklist. And, it [the blacklist available with them] has not been updated so far," the PML-N leader was told.

Sharif asked the officials to hand him the reason in writing. The officials gave him the off-load form that reads: 'Offload by immigration.' Several PML-N leaders, including Ata Tarar, Uzma Bukhari and Marriyum Aurangzeb went to the airport to see off Shehbaz.

"I am on my way to London for medical treatment. I will soon come back to the homeland," Shehbaz had told his party workers when he arrived at the airport.

The off-load form given to Shehbaz states that the immigration system has not been updated.

During yesterday's hearing, the LHC decided to allow Shehbaz to go abroad on medical grounds from May 8 to July 3. The court also scheduled a hearing for July 5 to continue deliberation on the petition seeking the removal of his name from the blacklist.

Shehbaz has arrived back home after staying 1.5 hours at the airport.

'Shehbaz Sharif interdicted at Imran Khan and Shahzad Akbar's behest'
Talking to the media after Shehbaz was denied to fly, PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb condemned the move, saying Shehbaz was held back at the behest of Prime Minister Imran Khan and SAPM Shahzad Akbar.

The PML-N leader said restraining him from travelling abroad is in contempt of court, adding that the claim regarding the system not being updated is false.

The Federal Investigation Agency is committing contempt of court on Imran Khan's order, she noted, adding that the FIA said Shehbaz's name exists on yet another list.

"The government has come down to outright mean manoeuvres, but this does not make any difference to Shehbaz Sharif," she said. However, the PML-N will take recourse to the courts soon as the consultation process with the legal experts is underway.

Aurangzeb said her party has all legal options to visit.

"You committed a gross contempt of court by disallowing Shehbaz Sharif from leaving the country despite him carrying all legal documents."

Shehbaz will fly abroad in a day or two, if not today, said Aurangzeb, adding that the government is victimising the PML-N with other opposition parties to hide its shortcomings. The NAB is being used as a tool for this purpose, she pointed out.

The government does not want to arrest the thieves of atta, gas, electricity, sugar, and LNG as it has aimed to exclusively target Shehbaz Sharif, Aurangzeb added.

Tarar also spoke to the media and lashed out at the government, saying, "The selected rulers have small joys."

He said everybody was a witness to how Zulfi Bukhari's name was struck off from the blacklist, while the ECL did not have Shehbaz Sharif's name removed.

The Supreme Court spurned NAB's plea to put Shehbaz's name on the ECL, he highlighted.

'Govt determined to hold Shehbaz back'
After the LHC decision to permit Shehbaz to travel abroad, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry had voiced the government's resolve to "seek all legal avenues against the decision".

In a tweet, he termed it the mockery of the law to let Shehbaz go as he is involved in money-laundering of billions of rupee of the nation's money.

"Shahbaz Sharif has been involved in money laundering worth billions," he said, adding: "For him to run away like this would be great misfortune [for the country]."

Chaudhry said that Shehbaz had provided a guarantee in the past for the return of his elder brother, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, "but what became of that?"

This was funny. They paid billions in bribes to get an illegal order from the crooked LHC and then didn't even register it with FIA in a desperate attempt to get away at midnight

The dummy did not get his name cleared to enable him to travel. It was too late and now he needs to wait till Eid holidays are over. The Pakistan Courts should hang its head in shame. The govt should have asked for guarantee that Showbaz will return. The courts have made the country into a banana republic.

The Nooras attacked the FIA office in Lahore. They did the same with the NAB office back last year. Isnt it time that Riyasat showed these thugs who is boss.

'How can govt accept Shehbaz's guarantee when he couldn't fulfil the same for an absconder?': Fawad

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry wondered on Sunday how the government could trust PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif's guarantee to return to the country when he hadn't been able to fulfil the same assurance for his brother PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad along with Adviser to the Prime Minister on Interior and Accountability Mirza Shahzad Akbar, he said: "The question is how can Shehbaz Sharif's guarantee [to return] be accepted when he couldn't fulfil another absconder's guarantee?

"When he was giving Nawaz's guarantee, we had the hope at the time that NAB (National Accountability Bureau) and the court would call him and ask that he had given guarantee for Nawaz and had to come back with him so where has he (Nawaz) gone?"

The minister said the opposition had the same stance and pointed to PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari's call for Nawaz to come back during a conversation with PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz.

"The opposition itself thinks that Nawaz is a mafroor (fugitive)."

Chaudhry alleged that Shehbaz had previously visited London due to complaints of "back pain" and yet videos later surfaced of him "running in the streets; there was no problem".

He added that Punjab Health Minister Dr Yasmin Rashid was much more ill than Shehbaz and yet was continuing her treatment while staying in Pakistan and was also steadfast on the Covid-19 front so "does it not suit Shehbaz and Nawaz, who have led the government for a long period, that they get their treatment done in Pakistan?"

The Lahore High Court on Friday had granted Shehbaz ‘conditional permission’ to travel to the UK for medical treatment from May 8 to July 3.

Citing "procedural hiccups", however, the Federal Investigation Agency had stopped him on Saturday (yesterday) from leaving the country for London. Immigration officials had told him that he could not board the flight as his name was on the ‘person not in list (PNIL)’.

Chaudhry praised NAB chairman retired Justice Javed Iqbal and the current NAB administration for "cementing their place" and recovering Rs400 billion and depositing it in the treasury. He also lauded the courts for their decisions in cases such as the Panama Papers case, saying a perception was created that the legal system was part of the "war against corruption".

"In some instances, however, people think the system hasn't changed and this is the reality as well," he said, adding that the manner in which permission was granted to Shehbaz to go abroad was a reflection of the "rot in the system". He also questioned the speed with which his application was heard and decided.

The minister said giving permission to Shehbaz to go abroad would mean "setting aside the rights of thousands of prisoners. We forget them, acknowledge the class system and allow Shehbaz to go abroad while the rest of the prisoners don't have the right to even get treatment outside of jail."

He also lauded the courts for their decisions in cases such as the Panama Papers case, saying a perception was created that the legal system was part of the "war against corruption".

The minister said giving permission to Shehbaz to go abroad would mean "setting aside the rights of thousands of prisoners. We forget them, acknowledge the class system and allow Shehbaz to go abroad while the rest of the prisoners don't have the right to even get treatment outside of jail."

He said the way the PML-N leader had come out of jail gave the impression that powerful people could "get out by breaking the web, while small flies are getting trapped in this web". "Our society will be destroyed because of this and will face immense harm if the common man thinks there is one law for the powerful and another for weaker people," he stressed.

Chaudhry said the government had great respect for all court decisions but there were legal options available for this decision and it was its legal right to appeal it.

"Our stance is clear. We say the law should be equal for the Sharif family and for the common people, and the small thieves should get the same rights as the big thieves."

Govt to appeal conditional permission order
In his remarks, Akbar said all court orders like this "are challenged in court and there is a process to it".

He said the reason the government was shedding light on the issue was due to what he alleged were attempts by the PML-N to "mislead the nation". He claimed that Shehbaz had not properly assisted the court.

The adviser clarified that the Supreme Court had deliberated on the PNIL, and standard operating procedures existed for it.

"Because issues have been raised regarding it and some clarifications are [needed], the government will appeal this order on those basis and after that it will be seen what the next step will be."

Commenting on the release of the detailed LHC verdict on Shehbaz's post-arrest bail petition in a money laundering reference and responding to accusations of a lack of evidence presented by the government, Akbar said he had brought forward 55 volumes of which 54 volumes contained evidence.

He also said the detailed bail order had been against Supreme Court instructions to keep high court bail orders short and to not comment on the merits of the case because that would make it prejudicial. "This is challengeable, this is a ground for appeal," Akbar added.

He said the detailed order had framed three questions: could bail be granted on facts and merits?; is there medical ground in the case on which bail could be granted?; and could there be bail on the basis of a delay in trial?

He said that for questions two and three, the bench had agreed with the decision of Justice Asjad Javed Ghural, with four judges saying that there was no medical ground in the case or any reason to grant bail due to the length of the case. According to Akbar, this created a contradiction with the order for conditional permission to go abroad since it was given on medical grounds.

"This is a clear contradiction, same accused and the same matter. This is a first and very fair ground for appeal."

He added that Shehbaz going abroad would mean the trial wouldn't be able to proceed and this was "another consideration which should have been in front in the case and because these people did not assist the court, this makes an appealable ground".

Akbar also addressed numerous points in the detailed verdict and provided rebuttals and explanations. He observed that the order stated that Shehbaz's income source was not investigated, but the IO report did contain the details on his assets accumulation. "This is clear proof that all these contradictions are present and this is an appealable order," he emphasised.

We need appeals not press conferences

ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Lahore has written a letter to its headquarters in Islamabad, asking it to place PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif's name on the Exit-Control List (ECL).

The above information was confirmed by The News which was able to access through official documents and obtain confirmation from highly-placed sources.

The request was made to place Sharif's name on the no-fly list as he is being investigated in an assets beyond means case and is accused of money laundering. The former Punjab chief minister has denied all charges of wrongdoing.

However, the interior ministry officials did not confirm receiving any letter from the NAB Headquarters on the issue.

NAB Lahore wrote a letter to the DG Operations NAB Headquarters on April 28, recommending that the PML-N president be placed on the ECL as there were several investigations against him, his sons Hamza Shehbaz, Suleman Shehbaz and others, sources said.

All of the above-mentioned are being probed in assets beyond means and money laundering cases.

According to a copy of the letter, NAB Lahore stated that via order dated 22-04-2021, the Lahore High Court (LHC) granted bail to the accused Shehbaz Sharif, whereas no orders regarding the placement of his name on the ECL or asking the PML-N leader to surrender his passport have been issued.

“As the presence of the accused is required to face the trial, it is recommended that the name of Mian Shehbaz Sharif be placed on the ECL for the smooth trial of the reference no 22/2020,” the letter read.

The letter further mentioned that the NAB HQ was earlier asked to place Shehbaz Sharif's name on the ECL and whereas the Ministry of Interior was requested through letter No 3-1(1)285/L/WII/NAB/Dy Dir (ECL) dated 19.02.19 and resultantly Ministry of Interior vide letter No12/46/2019-ECL dated 21.02.2019 confirmed the placement of accused Shehbaz Sharif on the ECL.

The letter further stated that thereafter the accused Mian Shehbaz Sharif filed a writ petition with the LHC for removal of his name from the ECL and a subsequent LHC order set aside the memorandum of the Ministry of Interior.

The letter stated that in this regard another request for the placement of Shehbaz Sharif's name on the ECL was forwarded to the NAB HQ in Islamabad.

In response, the prosecutor-general NAB HQ, in a letter, had conveyed that instead of placing the name of the accused on the ECL, it has approved to place, before the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the material collected against the accused to place his name on the ECL.

The letter stated that a reference (ACR No 22/2020) has been filed against Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, Mrs Nusrat Shehbaz, Hamza Shehbaz, Suleman Shehbaz, Muhammad Usman, and 11 others and the said reference was filed on August 20, 2020, on the allegations that the suspects had accumulated disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs7,328 million through dishonest means. It said the suspects were also guilty of the offence of money laundering, with the case pending before an accountability court in Lahore.

The letter stated that the names of all persons except Shehbaz Sharif had been placed on the ECL and 11 other accused with Shehbaz Sharif were facing trial.

The letter further stated that five of the accused had been declared proclaimed offenders in the case.

LAHORE: As the federal cabinet approved the decision on Thursday to put Shehbaz Sharif's name on the Exit Control List (ECL) to bar him from leaving the country, PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said that despite Eid holidays, Prime Minister Imran Khan is obsessed with Shehbaz.

Speaking to media after the development, Marriyum said that instead of thinking about the poor and needy on the occasion of Eid, Prime Minister Imran Khan could only think about Shehbaz to the extent that he ordered the opening of offices so that his name could be placed on the ECL.

Criticising the government's foreign policy and relationship with other states, Marriyum said that allied countries, instead of investing in Pakistan, are sending charity and zakat (alms) here.

"What is the fault of Shehbaz if allied countries are giving charity to Pakistan?" Marriyum questioned, adding that PM Imran Khan did nothing to control inflation on the occasion of Eid.

"PM Imran Khan ordered placing the name of Shehbaz Sharif on the ECL but I wished he had resigned from his position on Eid day as a gift to the nation," she said.

"I wish you had apologised to the masses on the occasion of Eid or had ordered the arrest of wheat, sugar, and medicine mafia instead."

She went on to say that the premier should have placed the names of those on the ECL who are defaulters of 14 trillion, adding that the federal cabinet took no action against those "thieves" who have stolen sugar worth Rs450 billion.

Marriyum reiterated that the court had granted Shehbaz permission to go abroad for his medical treatment.

"Imran Khan Sahab is deliberately trying to disrespect the court's order," she said, adding that a deliberate refusal to obey the court's order is not only contempt of the court, but it is also an attack on the judiciary.

The PML-N spokesperson said that Shehbaz is celebrating Eid with the people of Pakistan, his children, and his family with great joy.

"One can only pray for the state of hatred, jealousy, and fear that you are suffering from," she said to PM Imran Khan.

Shehbaz Sharif’s name added to ECL

The Interior Ministry on Thursday had been directed to add Shehbaz Sharif to the Exit Control List (ECL) after the approval from the Federal Cabinet on Thursday.

According to Ministry of Interior sources, a notification related to the decision will be issued tomorrow (Friday, May 14).

Sources had earlier told Geo News that the ministers gave go ahead through a circulation summary on the request of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

A sub-committee of the federal cabinet had recommended including Shehbaz Sharif to the ECL.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad to announce the development on Wednesday, Minister for Interior Shaikh Rasheed had said that the PML-N president may petition for a review of the decision within 15 days.

He had said the ministry will make a decision within 90 days of receiving a request for review, adding that the PML-N leader may appear in person, if he so wishes, to make the request.

Speaking in greater detail about Shehbaz's name being placed on a "blacklist", Rasheed had said that it was not the case at all.

"The court's decision came with regard to a blacklist. Shehbaz Sharif was not on a blacklist. He was [...] under an order of May 7, 2021," he said, without elaborating any further.

The interior minister had said that there are three lists used to prevent someone from travelling abroad: one is the blacklist, into which someone's name is included by the Passport Office; the second is Provincial Identification List (PNIL), into which someone's name is added by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA); and the third is the Exit Control List (ECL) into which the federal cabinet has the authority to put someone's name.

Rasheed had said that the interior ministry "received no request (for permission to travel)" and "nothing stating medical grounds", whereas past requests had cited medical grounds.

Shehbaz stopped from leaving the country

It should be noted that on May 7, the LHC had released Shehbaz Sharif on bail in a case pertaining to assets beyond means.

Later, the court also allowed him to go abroad for eight weeks on medical grounds.

However, Shehbaz Sharif was offloaded on Saturday at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal Airport from a Doha-bound flight by the immigration officials as his name was on the provincial identification list (PNIL).

The PML-N president was told he could not leave the country until the system was updated.

The federal government had also announced to file a petition against the permission granted to him to leave for abroad.

Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry had said that Shehbaz’s guarantee could not be accepted as he had earlier given assurances about former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's return but nothing became of that.

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad on Saturday clarified that PML-N president Shahbaz Sharif's name has not been added to the no-fly list.

In a video statement shared on his social media accounts, the minister said the summary forwarded by the interior ministry to place the former Punjab chief minister's name on the Exit Control List (ECL) has not yet been received.

"The summary can be received by Monday or Wednesday," he said, adding that the names of 14 co-accused with the PML-N leader are already placed on the ECL.

"Five members of the Sharif family are absconders in this case and he {Shahbaz Sharif] is Nawaz Sharif's guarantor," the minister noted.

Rasheed said the leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly was not directly flying to London but wanted to go to Qatar, where he was to complete a 15-day quarantine period, before flying to the UK.

He said that so far, the government has not received any medical report from the former Punjab chief minister. The interior minister said after the summary is received from the cabinet, the law ministry and the interior minister will take a joint decision on whether or not Sharif's name can be placed on the ECL.

"So you will have to wait for the summary, after which the law ministry and the interior ministry will take a decision [on the matter]," he said. "The decision will be in accordance with the law, Constitution and Article 25," he added.

As per an earlier Geo News report, the cabinet has approved adding Sharif's name to the ECL on the recommendations of NAB, sources confirmed.

Sources at the ministry of interior said the approval of the inclusion of Sharif's name in the no-fly list was given through a circulation summary. After approval, the summary was sent to the interior ministry which will proceed accordingly.

An official notification related to the decision will be released sometime later.

A sub-committee of the federal cabinet had recommended including Shahbaz Sharif to the ECL.

It should be noted that on May 7, the LHC had released Sharif on bail in a case pertaining to assets beyond means.

Later, the court also allowed him to go abroad for eight weeks on medical grounds.

However, Sharif was offloaded last week at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal Airport from a Doha-bound flight by the immigration officials as his name was on the provincial identification list (PNIL).

The federal government had also announced to file a petition against the permission granted to him to leave for abroad.

Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry had said Sharif’s guarantee could not be accepted as he had earlier given assurances about former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's return but nothing became of that.

Shehbaz Sharif files contempt of court petition in LHC

Shehbaz Sharif approaches LHC after he was stopped from flying abroad.
The PML-N president maintains that the immigration officials violated court orders.
He was offloaded from a Doha-bound flight on May 8.

LAHORE: President of the Pakistan Muslim League-N Shehbaz Sharif submitted a contempt of court petition in the Lahore High Court on Monday, after he was prevented from leaving the country despite court orders.

On May 8, Sharif, who is also the leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, was to board a flight to Qatar when he was stopped by immigration officials at the Lahore airport.

Sharif was told his name was still on a no-fly list titled, the Provisional National Identification List (PNIL). On Monday, the government also added his name to the Exit Control List (ECL), after it was removed by a court order in 2019.

In his petition, Sharif states that the LHC order which allowed him to leave the country one-time was announced on May 7 in front of the deputy attorney general and two Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) officials.

The above order had become a matter of public knowledge, Sharif argues, as various representatives and federal ministers had discussed its contents on social media and during talk shows.

The petition adds that the “excuse for not permitting the complainant to proceed abroad was lame and false because a comprehensive mechanism of updating the Integrated Border Management System and placing or removal of names in the stop-lists 24/7 round the clock, is in vogue.”

Sharif’s counsel adds that the “instant case is a classic example of high handedness, utter disregard of rule of law, blatant defiance and deliberate disobedience, defeating and frustrating an order of this Hon'ble Court through contumacious and contemptuous conduct by way of resorting to false and frivolous pretexts for which a separate contempt petition is being filed.”

Sharif’s counsel states that the order dated May 7 be implemented immediately “in the interest of justice.”

Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif cannot be allowed to go abroad as there are corruption cases worth billions of rupees against him.

The interior ministry placed the PML-N president’s name on the Exit Control List (ECL) on Monday after receiving the approval from the federal cabinet and completion of legal regulations. Shehbaz was supposed to fly to London for medical treatment for which he had obtained permission from the Lahore High Court.

“I have no personal issue with anyone but those who have looted national wealth cannot be released,” the prime minister said while chairing a meeting of the federal ministers and spokespersons.

The meeting proposed to hold a countrywide protest on Friday against Israeli barbarism in Palestine, which Premier Imran approved.

A briefing was given on the economic situation of the country.

It was said that despite the coronavirus pandemic, “our economic indicators are positive, exports and remittances are steadily increasing”.

At present, inflation is a global problem. However, “inflation in Pakistan is lower than in other countries”. “Pakistan has the lowest prices of petroleum products in the region.”

The prime minister said, “In this regard, the government is making all possible administrative and policy decisions to reduce inflation.”

PM Imran directed his team to ensure that the benefits of positive economic indicators go directly to the public. “The next budget should focus on public relief and development projects.”

Separately, Imran chaired a meeting to discuss the agreements he made during his visit to Saudi Arabia.

The foreign secretary gave a presentation on the progress of the prime minister's visit.

Imran said, “There is a lot of scope for bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia in the fields of trade, energy, tourism and manpower.”

The prime minister noted the cordial hospitality in Saudi Arabia and the close cooperation between the two countries in various fields, including economy and investment, and directed the relevant ministries to take immediate and full action on the decisions taken during the visit.

The Prime Minister also laid special emphasis on the implementation of agreements to promote Saudi investment in Pakistan.

He directed the concerned ministries to ensure close liaison with the concerned Saudi ministries for the benefit of both the countries within a specified period.

On Saudi Vision 2030, he referred to the employment opportunities for Pakistan's skilled and semi-skilled manpower in the coming decades, saying that if taken full advantage of it, it would help improve and develop Pakistan's economy.

He stressed the need for comprehensive measures to harness the true potential of the special relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday said Prime Minister Imran Khan had himself approved the extension of Rawalpindi's Ring Road and later ordered an inquiry into the matter when there was an outcry over it.

“This is similar to how he [PM Imran] had given the nod to the export of sugar and then approved its import,” the opposition leader in the National Assembly told reporters in Charsadda where he went to pay tribute to the recently deceased Begum Naseem Wali.

“The papers for the Ring Road project were ready in the year 2017,” he added.

“Dr Tauqir Shah [a senior bureaucrat whose land falls in the new plan] has remained my secretary and I find him to be an honest man.”

Shehbaz maintained that billions of rupees were misappropriated through the sugar scandal and a new case had surfaced.

He added that other scandals were out there for everyone to see including wheat, medicines and more recently the purchase of vaccines.

The PML-N president denied seeking an NRO (immunity in corruption cases) from the government.

“We are spending time in prison. Why would that be happening If we had struck a deal with the government?”

Shehbaz said this was not for the first time that he was facing retaliatory actions.

“I was first arrested in 1996. I was also kept in Attock and Landhi jails,” he added.

“During my time in jail, I was forced to sleep on the floor to make the conditions harder for me. Despite the court's permission, I was stopped from going abroad. That was contempt of court.”

He claimed that while calling its opponents robbers and bandits, the ruling PTI had brought the country to the brink of destruction.

“Every segment of the society is worried about the skyrocketing increase in prices.”

The former Punjab chief minister maintained that the present government had failed to deal effectively with the Covid-19 pandemic.

“People had to rely on vaccine they received in charity. Today, [the novel] coronavirus is wreaking havoc in the country due to the incompetence of the government.”

Shehbaz recalled that when there was an outbreak of dengue fever in Punjab and the government was trying to curb it, he and his brother, former premier Nawaz Sharif, were named “dengue brothers”.

“During Nawaz Sharif's era, four metro bus services and motorways were built but they could not prove even a single bit of corruption,” he noted.

“Here in BRT [Bus Rapid Transport] Peshawar, corruption of Rs126 billion was reported. Those buses did not even ply the roads but were burnt.”

The PML-N president said his party's government had generated cheap electricity.

“What is happening today?” he added, referring to the high cost of power.

On the issue of estranged PTI leader Jahangir Tareen, Shehbaz said the party would hold a consultative session on the matter.

“It is an internal matter of the PTI,” he added.

A day earlier, Tareen said the like-minded “group” of party lawmakers supporting him was formed in response to Punjab government's retaliatory actions.

However, the former PTI general secretary refuted reports of a division in the party.

“We have not formed a forward bloc. We have appointed a focal person [Sardar Saeed Akbar Khan Niwani] to represent us in the [Punjab] assembly,” he told reporters outside a Lahore court, where he appeared in connection with the money laundering case registered against him.

Opposition Leader in National Assembly and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday withdrew his petition he had filed in Lahore High Court (LHC) to get its order implemented regarding the permission to go abroad for one-time for medical treatment.

Earlier this month, LHC’s Justice Syed Ali Baqar Najafi had ordered to remove the name of Shehbaz Sharif from the blacklist and allowed him to go abroad.

Later, the federal government challenged the decision in Supreme Court. During a press conference, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed had also announced that the name of Shehbaz Sharif had been placed in Exit Control List (ECL).

Shehbaz Sharif had filed a petition in LHC for the implementation of its order. During the last proceedings of the court on Wednesday, Justice Najafi sought details from the federal government by May 26 to know under what circumstances the LHC's decision was not implemented.

The PML-N president today filed a petition via his counsels Azam Nazir Tarar and Amjad Pervez, seeking withdrawal of his earlier petition. Shehbaz's counsels implored that the name of his client has been placed on the ECL on May 17, 2021. "Due to the issuance of the memorandum, the instant petition may not proceed in its present form," the petition added.

He said that the petitioner intends to challenge and seek appropriate remedy against the above-said memorandum by reserving his right to seek initiation of contempt proceedings against the delinquents.

"In view of the submissions made above, it is humbly prayed that the above noted main petition along with all Civil Miscellaneous Applications be kindly allowed to be withdrawn with the permission of the petitioner to challenge and seek appropriate remedy in accordance with the law."
