LAHORE: Nineteen employees of a restaurant were sent behind bars after a group of police officers in the city flipped out when the takeaway joint refused to hand over free burgers.

Workers at the trendy chain Johnny and Jugnu in the eastern city of Lahore were rounded up and held for seven hours overnight on Saturday, leaving behind unattended kitchens and hungry customers.

"This is not the first time something like this has happened with our kitchen teams at our restaurant, but we want to make sure this is the last," the fast food chain said in a statement published on social media.

The beef started when staff at the restaurant refused a "request from a very high profile special guest".

Restaurant staff told AFP that most of those arrested were young people, including many university students.

Following an outcry among fans, nine police officers involved were suspended yesterday, senior provincial police official Inam Ghani said on Twitter.

"No one is allowed to take the law into his own hands," Ghani said.

Pakistan's police officers are infamous for corruption and for demanding kickbacks from local businesses.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has called for a reform of Punjab's police force, saying "cronies" had been appointed by politicians to control police stations.

why dont you start by explaining in the 3 years what has IK done to fix the police corruption

He said in an interview before coming to power, it will take only 2 years to end corruption in police, and its a simple process unlike removing corruption from the gov. All he has to do is implement an adhoc system, but no gov. does this because they need a corrupt police force, well well well, here we are after 3 years and police is worse. In Pakistan when your fav leaders fail, its always the others fault or its on the lines of pakistan cant change.

This is the reason why pakistan is still here in the same position since 1947, people support politians like football teams, there just never wrong.

The hassan nisar types who were all gaga over IK coming to power and leaving the west to move to pakistan have all moved back including hasan nisar himself, after they all believed rivers of milk and honey were about to flow, but they cant blame IK, its the system, it cant change. Institutions have memories and the Institutional memory of Punjab Police is to find ways to extort money and act as henchmen for the political and Wadera mafia. The reason for that is quite simply, the vast majority of people hired by SS and Hamza and others paid to join. I was privy to a conversation between a guy that came to England in the early 90s as a visitor and one of our bridari, and he started to talk about his son joining the Police, and suddenly they were talking about 6 lakh. I thought that sounds like a decent salary until the baba told me, that this was the amount needed to get him inducted. That tells you how much people have paid to join.
IK must scrap the Punjab Police and rehire educated people , pay better and a new Institutional memory can be created. The Motorway Police have managed it. This organisation is beyond reform because it has too many criminals.

Anyone can "save" the economy from bankruptcy by taking loans from the IMF. IK also said earlier he would commit suicide before he took an IMF loan.

All that is needed to "save" the economy from bankruptcy is to deflate the currency thus reducing domestic demand for imports and giving a boost to manufacturers of exports. Of course, that also leads to inflation that especially hits the poor and the middle class hard. Also, the IMF requires governments to reduce subsidies, which again mostly impact the poor.

IK went for loans from IMF/WB etc., and agreed to their terms which inflicted a lot of pain on the poor and the middle class. Nothing creditable about what he did, anyone else could have done the same.
