Mandela was a great man no doubt but was more of a freedom fighter. Not sure how he would have run the nation without this. Putin has it all but the most important trait esp in todays world which both have is they are truthful to their citizens. Here is the GDP growth of India in the last two decades. As you can see BJP hasn't done anything out of the box. Also it was the LPG(Liberalization, Privatization and Globalization) policy of Congress in 1991 that actually turned the fortunes of India.

Also if you ask me India deserved a PM like Subhas Chandra Bose who was a good statesman, an intellectual( IAS Qualifier also) and a good military leader. He even offered Jinnah premiership of United India due to his great foresight but unfortunately for Indians he died before independence.
