Another excellent post from on of the most respected posters we have on PP!

A well-deserved POTW award for Markhor for his brilliant explanation of why the greats weren't that great after all by the time they retired.

Even in those wins vs Namibia and Holland we were distinctly unimpressive labouring to 250 with the bat. The signs of impending doom were evident even before that World Cup. People wondering why I'm very anti-Waqar need to look at that 2002-03 era under his captaincy which was the most depressing time of my Pakistan fandom after 2010.

After beating Australia away in the ODI series, we had an appalling slump starting in the Morocco tri-series where we lost 3 of 4 matches, including botching a chase of 196.

The Kenya tri-series was even worse. We were hammered by Australia and would've lost the final had rain not interfered. Worst of all, we even laboured to beat Kenya nearly botching a chase of 130 ! We crashed out of the group stage of the 2002 Champions Trophy despite being staged in Asian conditions. Then came the biggest humiliation: the Sharjah Test vs Australia.

I returned from school thinking a PLAYER had scored 59 and 53 in the 1st and 2nd innings. I did a double take learning the entire TEAM scored that amount - on a flat Sharjah pitch of all places ! That's when I lost patience with Waqar - it was clear the boys won't playing for him. In South Africa we received another hammering.

Amidst all this, there was a bustup between Waqar and Mohammad Yousuf. Yousuf picked up a shoulder injury and Waqar thought he was malingering, and had a go at him. Wasim meanwhile started his campaign for the captaincy as he did before World Cups, but Chairman Tauqir Zia refused with the Qayyum Report still hanging like a dark cloud. His faction (Akhtar, Razzaq, Afridi, Yousuf, Azhar) were anti-Waqar, and the 2 Ws were barely on speaking terms. Inzamam was seen as the mediator.

As for Inzamam, he completely lost form after the 329 vs NZ, only regaining it after that fabulous Multan hundred vs Bangladesh. He had a torrid WC while Saeed Anwar began his journey into the world of Tablighi Jamaat after losing his daughter. He was never the same player and had a poor WC with just one slow hundred vs India on a flat deck to show for. Guys like Saqlain Mushtaq and Azhar Mahmood were past it while Saleem Elahi, Shahid Afridi, Taufiq Umar (in ODIs) never had it. Abdul Razzaq became lazy around this time with his pace dropping while Shoaib Akhtar was simply obsessed with breaking the speed record.

Waqar's captaincy was appalling. Defensive, reactive, robotic and unimaginative - lacking man management skills and lost his composure at crunch moments (bowling beamers to Andrew Symonds in our opening game vs Aus having reduced them to 86-4). Yet we appointed this guy to a coaching role for a FIFTH time.

Well done. Good poster and one who spreads positivity. Him and Junaids are brilliant posters

There are a few posters whose posts you don't miss reading. For more than half of those posters however, the emotions usually are, Okay! Here we go this is going to be a fun read!! Or Okay, what completely over the top stuff am i going to be reading this time!!

But with Markhor bhai, you know absolutely that you're going to be reading a balanced take on a matter with no underlying agenda. That's what makes him a special poster.

Well done.

Captaincy in Pakistan team was always a joke for us. A team full of captains clashing with each other made our job a lot easier!!

2003 WC in particular was a diaster for Pakistan because it should have ideally been the stage for Inzamam, Yousuf, Younis, Akhtar to own a tournament in their life time ALL 3 of whom had nothing to show for in that tournament with the older Ws, Anwar, Latif playing supportive part. But instead Wasim was carrying th bowling and Saeed Anwar was carrying that batting both of whom could not win big matches on their own at that age like the way Brett Lee, Tendulkar, Flemming, Symonds, Bond were doing.

agree with most of Markhor analysis, but razzaq wasn't lazy imo, he played like 120 odd (mostly meaningless) odis in a four year period until 2002 and had excellent stats, then he got injured when hw was supposedly 23, but was pbly 28 or 29, so his pace dropping wasnt a suprise.

add to that his horrible mismanagement as an all rounder, batting at 3 sometimes, then 7, hitter, blocker, etc. he was an excellent player of pace but as with so many good players, playing for pak ruined him, also his fake age didnt help as people had unrealistic expectations from him.

Great post from 1 of the best posters on PP. I will always try to read his posts.

I've been to this ground a couple of years ago.

Right in the middle of a residential area and with lots of foreign embassies. Not a bad ground.

A shame not much cricket has been played there over the years.

Good choice potw.

Lovely post. Unfortunately it was too late for the PCB to move that team on because the boys finally ran out of steam some 6-7 months prior to the tournament, it would have been far too soon to get a new team in who would have struggled against teams like Australia, South Africa who were top dog back then. Not to mention the controversy it would have created having to drop the likes of Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Saeed Anwar, Saqlain Mushtaq and Co, 6-7 months before the WC so the PCB decided to respect their wishes for a final swansong but unfortunately these players just did not have it anymore.

That showing made it very easy for the PCB to move on from them which is what they had intended too for some time.

Well-deserved.

Waqar's captaincy was one-dimensional and unimaginative, but Wasim's antics and constant propensity to build factions within the team was arguably more damaging to Pakistan cricket.

Great stuff from Markhor as per usual enjoy reading your posts mate, quiet insightful on Pak cricket and has helped me learn more about a very exciting team
