The Sindh Assembly elected on Friday Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Murad Ali Shah as the province’s new chief minister.
“The total votes cast today in the assembly were 91, out of which MPA Khurram Sher Zaman received three votes and MPA Murad Ali Shah secured 88 votes,” Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani said while addressing lawmakers.
PPP names Murad Ali Shah as new Sindh chief minister
According to Express News, Zaman, a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MPA in Sindh, was the only member who contested the election for the post of provincial chief minister against PPP’s Shah.
Other opposition parties, including Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) did not nominate any candidate for the chief ministership.
“I declare Murad Ali Shah, who has secured the highest number of votes, as leader of the house and invite him to take his seat,” the speaker said.
The newly-elected CM will take oath of the office of the provincial chief minister at the Governor House later in the evening.
Will accept party decision, come what may: Qaim Ali Shah
Shah had taken oath of a minister in November 2014 after he was declared an unopposed winner from PS-73 (Jamshoro) in the elections held in the same month.
Previously an adviser to the CM, Shah had surrendered his Canadian citizenship and submitted relevant documents in the court to contest the elections.
