A consolation victory or total domination by England (bar one Test) - how will this series end for the visitors?

The team who will bat first. Both teams don't have a batting line up to chase in fourth innings.

Oval is a bit different than other typical English wickets. It's faster, with good, true bounce and lightning fast out field. This is probably least toss influenced Test venue in UK, where better team of the day wins. Till day 2 morning, usual Oval track helps seemers and it'll always help express bowlers - but that doesn't mean one should bowl first always. If a batting unit can survive 1st 3 hours (2 hours on day 1 & 1st of Day 2), it's possible to post BIG scores, then spinners comes in to play as well. However, in dry summers, I have seen rank turning Oval wicket - sometimes in late 90s, that AUS side failed to chase 120 ish target against Caddick & Tufnel, Test ending probably in 3 days

I think, if they win toss, IND will like to bat first (though not sure how fit Ashwin is, they don't have a leggi, and Jadeja might not be effective on true Oval wicket). For ENG, it hardly matters - their top order seems to be good enough take them at 100/5 regardless of batting 1st or 2nd, then it's up to the bottom half. If they drop Adil for Woakes, I think they won't mind bowling first.

Either way, it's an ENG Test to lose - 4-1 for me. Normally, visitors often do well at Oval, because traditionally it's the last Test of summer and visitors by then are well acclimatized. Besides, Oval isn't a typical English seem friendly wicket, hence ENG doesn't enjoy the extra edge for their typical English condition seemers. Long back, I saw Neil Mallender ripping through PAK batting at Headingley, very next game he was bang average at Oval. Had this series been 3-1 for IND or even 2-2, I would have put them favorites at Oval, but not now.

Kohli was bitter disappointed at the end of 4th Test, and I hope one of the pacers don't break down after bowling for long on hard Oval landing surface. They have worked so hard and bowled well enough to lead at 3-1 by now, but in a dead rubber might loose heart. If bowlers don't out perform their usual once again, IND batting is not going to compete here - Oval will be high scoring game & no team with such tail can compete when new ball is taking 2/3 wickets before pacers are even sweating.

Still, there is no Dead rubber in Test, so the game will be entertaining, I'll definitely watch.

I was expecting a 4-1. It will be a 4-1; India have battled hard but I don't see em winning last game.

Want Cook to score a 100 and leave the test arena like an ATG :don

Toss will be very important. England will have the upper hand for sure though.

The likelihood of R Ashwin playing the fifth Test between India and England has receded significantly with news that he did not bowl during practice at Kia Oval on Wednesday.

Ashwin was off colour in the fourth Test at Southampton which India lost to surrender the series, and in the match prior to that had been hampered by a stiff groin. He bowled 37.1 overs in the second innings at The Ageas Bowl, taking 1/84.

On Wednesday, when India’s coach Ravi Shastri was asked if Ashwin was 100% fit for the fourth Test, he replied in the affirmative.

Ashwin not bowling in the nets at Kia Oval almost certainly confirms that Ravindra Jadeja will play the fifth Test given that he is the only spinner left in the squad.

Especially for India, there are no dead rubbers as long as it is ranked #1.

Ok I am changing my mind now. Eng will try in all seriousness to give Cook a fitting farewell. Looks like 4-1 :broad

What? You are changing your mind 3 minutes after I said I agreed with you!!!

Come on, we are the #1 team. We fight till the end and don't give an inch.

If Sam Curran plays, England wins.

India has no answer to this legend both with bat and ball.

England on a roll and they'll want to give Cook a good send-off. I think they'll win the 5th Test.

For every team actually - nothing special here; a loss in Dead rubber costs points, for No. 1 & No. 10 doesn't matter, No. 10 will go down to No. 11 if they start to keep losing to lower ranked teams even in dead rubbers. For any No. 1 team, damage done by losing back to back series with a game in hand probably won't be compensated with a win after the series just to make the final score a little respectable - but here I think ENG would love to make the series one sided while IND would try to make it look competitive. In any case, teams do consider every Test as individual contest and it starts from scratch.

It is obvious by now that India are poor chasers in test. Even if you give them 150, chances are we will fumble.

Our batting is at it's weakest in tough conditions. Opening slot is unsettled. Pujara is not the same force away, Rahane hasn't shown he can carry the batting when in form like Kohli.

So if India win the toss, bat first. No matter how green the pitch is.

Since SA tour started

Bat first: P3, W2, L1

Bowl first: P6, W0, L5

So yeah. A lot will depend on how the toss goes. I'd back India to win, if we win the toss.

India should win it. Asian teams tend to do well in the oval I think. There's less home advantage. Well at least Pakistan, feel like every time we play there we win it, just suits us. We got wrecked in 2010 but even then we came off with an oval win. And I think we would have won in 2006 too if the whole ball tampering controversy didn't go down and England were awarded the match.

They've battled hard and lost close games and think their unfortunate to be 3-1 down, but really they don't have much of an excuse for not winning at the Oval.

Would have said India if it wasn’t Cook’s farewell.

All set for a final hurrah for India on this tour.

Kohli with another hundred or 2 waiting - rest of India batsmen - not sure what they are here for!

Rolling Stones lead singer Mick Jagger has pledged to donate £20,000 to the organisation Chance to Shine during the upcoming fifth Test between England and India at the Oval, which starts on Friday (September 7). The 75-year-old will contribute that amount each time a player from either side scores a century or claims a five-wicket haul in the game. He will also donate £10,000 for every half-century or three-wicket haul.

"I follow England - the game in general, in fact - from wherever I am in the world and thought this would be a fun way to make some money for Chance to Shine," Jagger said. "It's been an exciting series that has got people talking cricket so let's reflect that; with every inspiring performance comes a new fan and the younger those fans are, the better it is for cricket's future.

"No pressure on either Joe Root's guys or Virat Kohli's - though the bigger they go at the Oval the better!"

Laura Cordingley, Chance to Shine Chief Executive, said, “We are so delighted that Sir Mick will be supporting Chance to Shine during the final Test. I’m sure that the players from both sides will do us proud, while also helping to raise truly significant funding for Chance to Shine.”

Furthermore, the charity is encouraging cricket-loving fans to follow Jagger’s lead and give £20 for a century or five-wicket haul and £10 for a 50 or three wickets. The England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has announced that it will match every donation that is made until September 30.

Normally I would expect England to throw in the towel here and for India to collect a consolation victory, but with this being Cookie’s last Test I think England will find enough motivation to turn up and win.

60% of the votes so far for England.

Depends on the toss. Whoever wins it will have the upper hand. I don't think kohli wins this one as he's already lost 8 out of 9 toss in test matches against England!.

Catches being dropped will not help India's cause.

Wonder how motivated the team is?

I voted for India just now, but even before the match I did have a feeling India would win, just like they won the dead rubber in SA.

Seems to be just one real result possible at the moment ...

Surrey are still charging “turn up on the door” entrants £35 tomorrow (i.e. on a Monday during the school term). I think that’s too high. £20 would be better.

India can still hold on today - just need luck and guts!
