ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ehsan Mani, after being summoned several times, finally turned up to face the National Assembly Standing Committee on Inter Provincial Coordination (IPC) here on Friday but almost landed in a soup for making uncalled for remarks about a lawmaker which he later took back to avoid a grim situation.

The committee which met here at the Pakistan Sports Complex with MNA Agha Baloch in the chair, were taken aback when Chairman PCB asked a committee member, Munawara Bibi Baloch, that if she wanted to get tickets of Pakistan Super League (PSL) he would provide her after buying them from the market.

Mani’s remarks irked all members of the committee who immediately announced to boycott the meeting in protest. The situation, however, did not get out of hand as the PCB chief immediately took back his words.

Chairman PCB, who was accompanied by director domestic cricket Haroon Rashid and other officials at the meeting, briefed the committee about the cricket affairs. He said that relocation of the entire PSL to Pakistan had paid off handsomely and the league’s fifth edition was a huge success. He disclosed that around 450 international cricketers are registered with the PSL which shows how they rated this league.

Making a startling disclosure, Mani said that before his joining as PCB head, the West Indies team was given $25000 per player for playing a T20 series in Pakistan while members of another team were paid $15000 per player for the tour.

“But this PCB regime has not paid anything extra to any player for playing in Pakistan,” he said. “Pakistan hosted Sri Lanka and other teams which was a big boost for Pakistan cricket.”

He revealed that the PCB gave 14 per cent tickets of PSL on complimentary basis. The committee members then asked Mani to give details of the recipients of free tickets to which he said that among others, Police officials were also given free tickets. “If we will not give them tickets[ to police], then they will stop our entry into our own stadium,” he remarked.

Some members of the committee clearly looked keen to probe the issue of complimentary tickets, the PCB chairman said that he always purchased his own tickets to watch the matches, therefore, there is no right of parliamentarians for free tickets.

Talking about Asia Cup, the Chairman PCB said that it is not a bilateral series between Pakistan and India, it is the Asia Cup to generate funds for emerging Asian teams. He said the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) will decide the fate of Asia cup, hinting that series could be held at neutral venue as Pakistan does not want to deprive the emerging teams from funds.

The meeting saw another ugly episode when a female tennis player entered into the meeting room to ask the IPC Minister Dr. Fehmida Mirza about the delayed prize distribution ceremony. Dr. Mirza was briefing the committee about the steps being taken to promote sports sector of the country.

Earlier, the committee was briefed by some lawmakers about the poor arrangements at PSB coaching centre at Karachi. However, Secretary IPC assured the committee that ministry and PSB would take steps to improve functioning of the said centre.

Well before showing off, he should have realized that it was much harder for the devil spawn Najam Sethi to convince teams to tour Pakistan.

Convincing players in 2020 is not the same as convincing players in 2015, 2016, 2017 etc., and it was those tours that have helped Mani today.

Those successful matches from 2015 onwards built credibility and convinced players that Pakistan is now ready to host cricket again.

Mani is an apt description of a small man in a big office.

Appointing Mani was yet another blunder by Imran Khan. We needed someone more energetic.

Much like the patron himself, he is only focused on looking at the past and trying to make himself look good instead of working towards the future.

No matter how hard he tries, he will never get credit for PSL and international matches in Pakistan. Those were Sethi’s achievements.

Wow, that's brutal from Mani

Why do the parliamentarians want free tickets? Freaking leeches.

This is strange that so experienced cricket administrator using those reasons like paying more to WI players. Meanwhile few months back he and Wasim Khan himself acknowledged that steps taken by Sethi and SKhan to pay additional money to these tours were right.

Either he just wanted to say that to keep committee members happy or he just wanted to recover from situation of ticket passes.. But whatever the reason it is, PCB is highly political organization

This whole thing is a farce, why should PCB discuss matters or be answerable to these people who have zero knowledge of cricket and instead want to arrange these meetings to get free passes for the matches, PCB were doing the right thing by ignoring them.

What a disgrace. 14% complimentary tickets. Freeloaders milking the PSL, including police officials.

Complimentary tickets and police officers blackmailing.

We were told that the police service has been reformed in Naya Pakistan.

What a joke.

Where is this Naya pakistan in which police reforms have been done? The police system is still as rubbish as it was in the past.

It was neccessary to bribe teams in order to get them to tour Pakistan. Pakistan was still not safe for international cricket.

Some excellent answers by Mani.

There should be no free tickets for these people. Though it's sad that quite a lot were already distributed for free -- a startling 14%.

Were you not givin free vip passes for one of the games and boasting about it here?

It was a good investment then, wouldn't be holding this PSL in Pakistan if it wasn't for those mini tours. The police and other government workers should get perks of free tickets as standard so they don't resort to blackmailing and bribery. Matches that aren't going to be packed out, might as well give the tickets for free.

Smart move by PCB on the police official thing.

When i went to Pindi stadium, the police officials didnt bother us, and if you had a valid ticket they allowed you to pass through easily.

Trust me, punjab police is known for creating hurdles, so if they were not creating hurdles in this matter than that was great.

Yes, this also reflects on the countrys PM that organizations such as PCB are forced to Bribe police officials to not wreck the promotion of a game.

Why should govt workers get free perks?

also matches are getting packed. If there are empty stands in Pindi, taht was the 3000 and 4000 ruppees stand

Also, most of hte complimentary tickets that are given, they are given to the sponsors. So familiy members of the sponsors avail these tickets mostly.

Yes police have only started taking bribes after July 2018.

It was when you have losers reading off parchis trying to convince people to come.

I feel like the government especially the legislators should stay out of sports, they need to stop harassing players and the board. If the ICC was an actual sports governing body like the IOC and FIFA they never allow government interference.

Mani did it without investing a penny om them . Great work.0

Well yeah if he invested that kind of money anymore he would've looked like the biggest fool out here. He wouldn't have been able to use the same approach back then tho

In a bid to ensure the media broadcasting rights for the next four-year cycle are sold for a maximum amount, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to hire a consulting company to oversee the process.

PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani had recently cautioned that the Board might face difficulties in getting desired bid amounts for the sale of media broadcasting rights for its international matches at home from 2020 to 2023.

The Board has advertised the hiring and according to reports, the company which wins the bid is likely to be paid in excess of USD 50,000 for its services. The last date to submit the tender is May 14.Mani noted that Sri Lankan and South African Boards are also facing problems in getting good bids because of the prevailing economic meltdown, caused by the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown of businesses.

In its previous deal with Ten sports and PTV sports, the PCB had a USD 149,000 million contract for four years but this included two home series against India.

Since the series with India were not held, an amount of USD 90,000 dollars was deducted from the total contract amount.

The Board has floated the bid documents and has also included a “wagering deal support” clause in it.

The inclusion of the clause apparently has come as a result of the ruckus created during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) when it was revealed that the company which had international live streaming rights of the matches had entered into a deal with a UK-based betting company which live streamed matches on its website and took bets on them from countries where betting is legal.
