Prithvi Shaw : The prodigious run-machine

He is following foot steps of Tendulkar. Highly rated youngster. If he scores a 100 in Irani Trophy on debut he will have replicated Sachin's feat.

Prithvi Shaw, Under-19 captain. DD open the bid at 20 lakhs. Mumbai say 35 and the bids are picking up between Mumbai and Delhi. RR say 65 lakhs. DD bid at 70 lakhs. MI - 75. DD push it to 1.20 crore. Prithvi Shaw sold for 1.20 crores to Delhi Daredevils.

Shubman Gill looks better as many said on this forum, got more in auction too at 1.8 crores.

DNA EXCLUSIVE | I think I am ready, says India's U-19 World Cup-winning captain Prithvi Shaw

Prithvi Shaw's maturity as a cricketer can be seen through his exploits on the field. Only less than two weeks, he led India to ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup triumph in New Zealand with his team staying unbeaten.

But he is beginning to mature as a person, and that can be seen with the deals that he is beginning to bag and the papers he has to sign to endorse products.

On Thursday, a day after playing for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 50-overs tournament, Group C matches in Chennai, Shaw was back in his home city doing a photo shoot for nutritional supplements Protinex and launching its 'protein calculator'.

Though not playing with the straight bat in front of the camera like he is used to on the cricket field, the 18-year-old is getting adjusted to the flashlights and posing for the camera, learning to speak highly about the product while also listening to the cameraman's instructions to 'turn left', 'keep head a little low', 'turn slightly to the right', 'keep body upright', etc on the earplugs.

The 'next best thing in Indian cricket', Shaw was all smiles when watching a small audio-visual of his best World Cup moments at the launch of the product on Thursday. And at the end of it, clapped for himself while saying "thank you" to those who compiled it.

It was indeed a laudable effort by Shaw and his team in New Zealand. But, the person that he is, Shaw is not banking on past glory. He is not looking far ahead, either. His immediate sight is the Vijay Hazare Trophy quarterfinal in New Delhi (Palam ground) next Wednesday.

NOT RESTING ON LAURELS
"I think the Under-19 World Cup is history now," Shaw tells DNA in an exclusive chat. "All the memories we have created are still in our minds. All those things that Rahul (Dravid) sir and all the other support staff told during the journey of the World Cup are all there. But, we have to move on at some point. Personally, I am looking forward the Vijay Hazare Trophy quarterfinal."

Among the many abiding memories of the junior World Cup was the 'hypnosis' celebration after winning the final, and before lifting the Cup. "Such a celebration happens in FIFA PS4 games. After a player scores a goal, his celebration is like that. When four or five runs were needed to win the final, we decided that we would celebrate that way," Shaw revealed of the moment in which he gathered all his team-mates in front on him and gave an imaginary push that made it look like he has telekinetic power, with his mates falling backwards.

LIFE LESSONS FROM DRAVID
Along with the fun that Shaw and his team had were also some serious life lessons learnt under Dravid. "Under Rahul sir, we learnt that if you are disciplined on the field, it is really important how to be disciplined off the field as well. Rahul sir has vast experience, he has travelled everywhere, and he has 10 years of IPL experience as a player and mentor. He has lots of experience on how to behave on the field and off the field. All those things really helped when he was talking to us. And, we are on his path," Shaw said.

Shaw, who aggregated 261 in five innings in the World Cup at 65.25 with two fifties and a best of 94 in the opening game against Australia, picked up the "lifting the World Cup for the country" as the best moment of the quadrennial event.

But he remembered the 203-run semifinal win against Pakistan for executing the plans to the last letter. "Against Pakistan, we had a good attitude on the field and the intensity was high," Shaw said. "We knew we had a good team and all the plans were well executed by all the players. It really helped the team as well. It was a team work throughout the World Cup journey. Every member of the team including all the support staff deserved the World Cup," he said.

With all the attention on him after joining the list of Mohammed Kaif, Virat Kohli and Unmukt Chand as India's U-19 World Cup-winning captain, Shaw has managed to focus on his game and let nothing affect him.

When asked how life has changed after the World Cup, Shaw said: "It is common. Obviously, when you win the World Cup for the country, the media comes to you, the cameras are on you. It is normal. As you grow up, as you do good things, it (attention) will come. I still have to grab the opportunities that are coming ahead. This is not the end," he said.

BIG STAGE BECKONS
Having shown glimpses of his class when he took on the senior international bowlers including New Zealanders Tim Southee and Trent Boult during a warm-up game last October, Shaw said he is ready for senior cricket.

"I think I am ready," he said after giving a thought when asked if he was ready for senior international. "I am doing my job. It is all about how much you score, how fit your are at that level. Maybe the selectors are looking at me. I have to grab the opportunities."

The transformation from Under-19 to senior level was done with aplomb at the domestic level. He has accumulated five hundreds and three fifties in nine first-class matches.

Shaw said he was nervous during his Ranji debut but never afterward. "The pressure was only in my Ranji Trophy debut (2016-17 semifinal against Tamil Nadu in Rajkot). I was nervous as I had come back from the U-19 Asia Cup. I still remember, we just won the U-19 Asia Cup and we came back to Mumbai. Suddenly, the selectors called me for the Ranji Trophy semifinal. It was an opportunity for me to score runs at the higher level. I missed out on the first innings (4) but made up in the second innings (120). It was possible due to the experienced players in the team encouraging me and taking the pressure off me," Shaw looked back.

With a century on Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy debuts, Shaw is on track to emulate Sachin Tendulkar for a century on Irani Cup debut also. But he is not burdening himself with the weight of expectations.

"I am a person who likes to be in the present. When the time comes to play Irani Cup, if I get the chance, I will make sure I will do my best," he said.

AND THEN THERE IS IPL
Shaw is one of those U-19 cricketers who will make his maiden appearance in IPL, with Delhi Daredevils bidding for him for Rs 1.20 crore at last month's auctions. He is sure of himself not getting into the bad habits in IPL and make the most in the presence of head coach Ricky Ponting and batting coach Pravin Amre among others.

"I am well matured to handle all those things. I will make sure I will not go in the wrong path. I will get experience playing in IPL. I will talk with Ricky Ponting sir, Pravin Amre sir and all the other support staff. I will enjoy over there. But the main thing is that I am going to play for DD. It is going to be great fun," he said before preparing himself for another photo shoot and a final media interview for the day.

Still only 18 but Shaw is developing into a really good batsman. Hope he's managed properly by the cricketing powers that be in India.

Im so glad he's not turned out to be another child prodigy who failed to live up to the hype. So far he looks like a terrific prospect for our batting line up in future.

NEW DELHI: Rizvi-Springfield skipper Prithvi Shaw, who slammed world record 546 runs against St. Francis D'Assisi in the Harris Shield tournament match on Wednesday, has a reputation of being a run-machine and a gritty performer in high-pressure games.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...odigious-run-machine/articleshow/26101197.cms

The new run machine has arrived.

Wow he was 15 back then.

So happy he's put a lot of hard work dedication to make it this far.

The best of the youngsta beauties. He has the power game to boot with crafty singles and has every shot in the book. Can play well on the front and back foot. I see him in the India team in the next 3 years

This guy is going to shake some trees .... believe me !!! I saw one shot he played today, absolutely out of the book !!! Surprised that so many short guys make good Batsmen !!!! The book is full of this type of a Batsmen !!!! Must be something to do with size of the bat and overall height ..... may be some of you know !!!!!

Why wait 3 years? He is ready now.

This youngster is a real deal, among so many talented young Indian batsmen, he is the best and has a bright international future ahead.

Seems to be a real deal. He can play for India if he continues with his good form for next 6 months.

Why wait 3 years? He is ready now.

He is already better than Pandey and Jadhav.

I would say even Gill is better than Pandey and Jadhav.

Push Rohit to No.4 and open with Shaw and Dhawan. Gill can play at No.5.

Better than Pandey and Jadhav? Based on what? Do you have stats to prove or just going by the way he's played in 2 or 3 IPL matches? Mate! I'm not supporting Pandey or Jadhav here, but at the same time it's unfair if you start comparing this lil lad to the players who played a few international matches. Pandey and Jadhav atleast have centuries against Aus/Eng and while chasing and winning respective games eventually.

I don't understand why are our Indian brothers hyping this lil lad and that Gill too much even before they making into the senior national time. This is exactly how we hyped the kiddo unmukt chand and we all know he's nowhere in the scene now. Just wait until they make into into national side and perform few matches before gauging their performances based on a couple of IPL matches.

As far as what I have seen of this Shaw, he has some wonderful shots in his book but throws his wicket away at crucial stages. Gill looks promising too, but can't really judge him based on few IPL innings.

Pandey, Jadhav don't really deserve a place in the World Cup squad but comparing these lil kids to them is absolutely pointless.

Let's not demoralize such talents by making them wait.

He is ready for international exposure.

Maybe few years for test cricmet but for LOIs the selectors can induct these guys already it's not that some of the current ones are Sanu better like some posters said. Him and Gill already seem so much better than Jadhav and Pandey.

What if they made Sachin wait they long? He made it as a 16 year old! I don't get this he is not ready theory when all signs are positive and the incumbent don't seem any better.

The only shining light for us Delhi fans.. Hopefully he is drafted into Indian T20 team soon and can slowly get into odi and test squad in next year.

FC cricket - Done
IPL - Done

Should be in the national side ASAP. He can develop further with the big boys. Cannot afford to lose him like we lost Unmukd

You need experience at 4 and beyond. Shaw is a top order batsman

Expereince is useless when you have dud batsmen.

Pandey and Jadhav are not going to win matches for India. Both can neither accelerate and one of them is a terrible fielder and Kohli has to hide him in the field (Jadhav).

There is still 1 more year for WC and India should induct Shaw in the team.

I would push Rohit to Middle order and open Shaw with Dhawan. Rohit can stabilize in case of collapse and have a good partnership with Kohli or Dhoni and rescue India. Can't expect the same from Pandey or Jadhav.

Im not saying Pandey or Jadhav should play either. Rahul has dibs if Rohit is moving down the order. However I doubt if ROhit will be moved. I want Rahul and Raina instead of Pandey and Jadav.

Btw, why is Shryas Iyer missing from these discussions? I’ve only watched highlights so far but he’s been the best younsta beauty, imo.

If rohit is moving at 4 then Rahul will open with dhwan, panday is useless.jadhav have advatange bcz he can bowl some over.we need someone at 6 who will bowl some over if pandya have off day

Closer down to the wickets may give an advantage.

If pandya have an off day? Seriously? You are talking as if he takes 2 wickets in every match and contribute with the ball. If Mr Pandya doesn't peform in the next two series he should be dropped just like othrr players. He is not a special player or son of Mukesh Ambani that he can't be dropped.

@Bhaag Viru Bhag even if we play with 5 specialist bowler, we need someone who can give 3 to 4 over as 6th option.nowdays all are batsman is coming they can't Bowl like panday iyar rahane shaw gill rahul Anyone

India's U-19 World Cup winners Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill forced their way into the India A squads for the England tour next month.

While Shaw was named in both the one-day and four-day squads, Gill found a place in the limited-overs side.

The India 'A' tour of England will begin with a one-day tri-series against England Lions (A team) and West Indies A from June 22.

India A will play a four-day 'Test' against the 'Lions' from July 16-19 at Worcester apart from couple of three-day games against county sides.

His frontfoot play is suspect and he plays the ball in the air when driving and often across the line(and gets bowled). He will be a great ODI player, not yet sure about test.

Yup. He is scoring runs despite that technique. But it can be improved. He will have to fail with present one first though. Or like sehwag he will remain a hand eye player vs pacers.

How has this boy been in the IPL? Apologies if my question seems un-informed as I don't follow IPL at all, just remember this kid from way back when he scored 500runs.

5 matches 205 runs. 170 strike rate.

The commentators did an interesting analysis of Shaw’s batting the other day (vs Chennai I think). Basically he looked all at sea to the ball outside off stump. Was playing so far away from his body (Sehwag esq but without the hand eye skills of Sehwag). Also he was trying to play deliveries outside off too straight (and hence playing and missing) - these balls should have been played more square or even behind the wicket.

He’s a great talent but he still has loads of work to do before he’s anywhere near ready for internationals.

Hope the coaches sort out his technical problems before they become a habit.

In an earlier era, if there was as much cricket telecast as is now, no young player would have made his debut as experts would have found issues in their techniques.

The guy has done everything needed in domestic cricket and deserves a call to the national side straight away. But the team managenents and selectors these days want finished products and delay debuts of prodigies.

He was trying too hard to smack the ball.

I have seen him play balls outside offstump much better in longer formats. No point in judging his skill and technique in T20's. He will be a superb ODI player.

For those who want to know a bit more about his past, there's a documentary on Netflix called "Beyond All Boundaries" about him, a girl named Akshaya and the biggest Sachin fan of all time. I recommend this documentary to everyone.

Need to prove his worth in A team outings.Even Jadeja has triple centuries in Indian FC.I have seen some his batting in FC against the likes of Ishant and didnt see much foot movement there either.

Out first ball in the first innings, same as his opening partner Agarwal as India-A is bundled out for 133. Next innings scores an unbeaten century at a strike rate of 136 (quite unheard of in Test cricket). Agarwal is also unbeaten on 56 and India-A bounce back.

If he has a good domestic season and A tours, he might break into Test squad in next home season.

Pretty sure Vijay and Dhawan will be permanently discarded after upcoming cycle of away tests.

Depending on how Dhawan and Vijay go in England, we could see Shaw debuting in Australia.

Currently on 161*, could get a double ton. Memories of Sunny's debut in WI.

This guy is a run machine. straight from the school of Gavaskar, Tendulkar. He and Gill will form a long partnership.

Thing is he plays outrageous innings. Like this one. Team 150 runs behind and he scores a better than run a ball 188. Dont know how to rate him and Gill yet.

Outrageous is the right word for Prithvi.

Really happy that Dravid is developing the batsmen the right way. Letting them retain their natural instinct. He could have easily tried to make mini-dravids.

Sehwag's effect on our collective mindset about "correct" batting can't be overstated. Making runs should be the only thing that matters when batting.

Shaw deserves a chance in the senior side. He is too good to miss out from the squad. He is very consistent in making big scores and he plays aggressively.

Let guys like Lokesh Rahul settle at first. India still has oldies like Dhoni and Yuvraj in the team who have not retired yet.

Actually, 250 behind. Overcame that in just more than a session. Very Sehwagesque.

Naah. Sehwag couldnot do much in the 2nd innings. Either this is something special and next ATG level batsman or this is fluke.

Nothing else explains this kind of outrageous batting.

I dont think its a fluke. But I would also recommend that he does another season of Ranji before being picked for the India side. Both Mayank and Prithvi have performed, and if they perform again next season, then they should replace either of Dhawan or Vijay in the line up.

Even if they perform well in the 1st half of ranji, they could be given a chance in the Aus tour. I know its throwing them in the deep end, but Rahul, Kohli and Sachin were all thrown in the deep end and performed.

Got out for 188 finally. India-A is redeeming itself, 133 all out first innings, 536/4 in the second.

The pitch seems to have really flattened out after the 1st innings. Every batsman is scoring runs.

But still, scoring at that SR for a long innings is commendable.

Sunday, 05 August 2018

A spectacular and unbeaten double century by Mayank Agarwal and a hundred from Prithvi Shaw powered India ‘A’ into the lead on a dominant second day of the first unofficial Test against South Africa ‘A’ in Bengaluru on Sunday. The home side ended the day’s action with a 165-run lead as they took charge of the contest.

The pair shone as they recorded a 277-run opening stand in reply to the visitors’ 246-run total. Shaw played the more measured innings between the two, bringing up his seventh First-Class hundred before his dismissal in the 59th over on 136 (196 balls, 20 fours). Twenty-seven-year-old Agarwal (220*) at the other end produced a brilliant batting display, smashing 31 boundaries and four sixes on his way to his double-ton landmark.

Following Day One’s Rudi Second (94) led fight back, the tourists came into the second day on 246/8 with Malusi Siboto (13*) and Beuran Hendricks at the crease. The lower order’s resistance didn’t last long as India’s Mohammed Siraj (5/56) picked up the final two wickets with no runs added the overnight score.

With the Indian batsmen on top form, it proved to be a difficult day for captain Khaya Zondo and his bowlers in the field. Dane Piedt (1/56) and Duanne Olivier (1/69) provided the only breakthroughs, accounting for Shaw and Ravikumar Samarth (37).

India ‘A’ reached stumps on a hefty 411/2 after 87 overs, with Agarwal and captain, Shreyas Iyer (9*) at the crease.

He should be drafted in Indian test team on this england tour.
He has already played many games in England with India A side and done well.
Dhawan and Vijay should be dropped.
Shaw wont do worse than these two openers.

Bringing in Shaw during such a tough tour can destroy his confidence. I see no reason why he should be part of the Indian Test team. The current players are more than good enough to perform. Just need to be persisted with.

Shaw making his debut in Cook’s farewell match. Sounds poetic and could be the sign of things to come.

If the sun is out and the wicket is dry and flat then he has to play but if the conditions are not batter friendly, Ind could do worse than waiting until Oct at home.

Can we throw him in middle order in LOI's ?

He may play the next test as a opener but we can't make space for him up the order in LO's. He is making runs for fun at domestic level. At more than decent click too.

Why is Prithvi Shaw not in India’s World Cup plans?

Why play the likes of Karthik, Pandey, Rayudu, when Shaw can be slotted in the middle order?

Because the selectors, maybe rightfully so, think he's not there yet. Hitting a third grade West Indies side is not such a great thing to be honest.

Holder is a good bowler so is Shannon gabriel. HE played well in A tours, First class, Every kind of cricket playd. Even Kohli is not able to dominate this attack like Shaw does. He is a special kid. Future sachin.

I don't see why he cannot be accommodated in the middle order till Dhawan/Rohit are there, and then move up to open when one of them make way in couple of years' time.

It's the most sensible thing to do and hence it shan't be done.

His technical weaknesses are too apparent, though in many cases that doesn't mean a player won't succeed. He's an out and out opener, not sure if would fit in middle order. May be a couple of solid centuries on Australian tour and he might get himself a world cup ticket.

He might get a look in now just like Pant has been given a chance. There are still 18 ODIs to go.

But the truth is that India doesn't require any more top order players. That is not the problem with their LOI batting. What we lack today is a finisher.

India today have Sharma/Dhawan who are perhaps their best openers combo ever. And the back-up is Rahul, who is seen with huge potential.

So if Rahul continues to fail, the back-up opener will be vacant and a chance for Shaw....

Because we are using the world cup as a retirement gift to our geriatric players
