In a major constitutional development, the proposed 27th Amendment has introduced significant changes regarding citizenship and the appointment process of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).

According to the amendment proposal, Pakistan aims to end the practice of dual citizenship. Under the new law, any Pakistani who obtains citizenship of another country will be required to give up their Pakistani nationality. The move is said to be aimed at ensuring national loyalty and reducing conflicts of interest among public office holders and citizens holding dual nationality.

Another key feature of the amendment is the change in the method of appointing the Chief Election Commissioner. The proposal suggests transferring the authority of appointment to the Judicial Commission, a move expected to make the selection process more transparent and independent from political influence.

If passed, the 27th Amendment would mark a major shift in Pakistan’s constitutional framework, redefining citizenship rules and strengthening the democratic process through institutional reforms.

Moreover, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government is preparing to pass the 27th Constitutional Amendment in Pakistan. The move comes more than a year after the government made changes to key laws.

The proposed amendments include creating a constitutional court and appointing executive magistrates. They also plan to transfer judges, remove protections for the provincial share in the NFC Award, and amend Article 243. Furthermore, the government wants to return education and population planning to federal control. Another goal is to resolve the deadlock over appointing the election commission.

Not a fan of this. I am obviously British, which is why Indians hate me so much. But I have always liked the safety net of dual citizenship just in case.

Let's be honest, no one is going to swing both ways unless you have a reason to cling onto Pakistani nationality. It will be simply giving up Pakistani nationality like overseas Indians do when they take up nationality of other countries.

Take the case of Muhammad Sarwar (an ex UK MP), he became involved in Pakistani politics and renounced UK citizenship to take up Governor of Punjab position. When Imran government fell, he left politics, reapplied for British citizenship and got it within two days as your renunciation is only on paper and can be resumed at anytime. His son Annas Sarwar is the leader of Labour Party in Scotland and most likely to be first minister at the next election.

So will Pakistan allow this type of pause in their citizenship is the question. If they do then they will take citizenship of other countries that allow in effect a temporary pause, and then either take up the Pakistani or foreign citizenship as and when it when its opportune for them and their families. They can keep on doing the citizenship switcharoos as much as they like.

Conceptually, I don't understand dual citizenship. You're either a citizen of a country so you owe it your loyalty and it owes you your rights or you're...not.

Citizenship is essentially a legal status, it is very black and white.

Concepts such as loyalty or belonging are where the matter becomes complex.

And I dont think removing dual nationality addresses those issues. As an example, despite becoming US citizens, most Indian origin people I have interacted with, still have deep loyalty, and arguably a preference, for India over America.

Second sentence is more of what every Muslim hopes every “Muslim country” aspires to be. It’s an ideal to aspire to even though ground reality in Pak is very different when you have so called Pak nationals fighting each other over dumb things

In Islam there is no concept of identifying and separating based on “nationalism” all these countries like Pak, India, ban etc etc are all man made concepts. Same with their flags. None of them chosen by them, but foreigners

I agree on that part. If holding a Pakistan passport means you get to vote in Pakistan elections, that is wrong. I've never done it but I suppose there will be plenty who do.

Both countries have good relations, both were happy enough to offer joint citizenship.
