PSL 6 postponed indefinitely due to COVID-19 concerns

Following a meeting with the team owners and considering the health and wellbeing of all participants is paramount, the Pakistan Cricket Board has decided to postpone the HBL Pakistan Super League 6 with immediate effect. The decision was made after seven cases were reported in the competition, which had started on 20 February.

The PCB, as an immediate step, will focus on the safe and secure passage of all participants, and arrange repeat PCR tests, vaccines and isolation facilities to the six participating sides.

Shame on those owners who bought along every Tom, Dick and Harry to mingle with the players without undergoing the necessary quarantine period to enter the bubble.

From my understanding covid is still running rampant in the country, so allowing crowds was an incredibly ludicrous decision.

A big slap on the face of Wasim Khan’s and Mani’s leadership.
 
Good decision. No shame in looking after the health and safety of people over the frail nationalistic pride of some. Bigger leagues in bigger sports have been compromised. It's honestly not a surprise that the PSL has also fallen victim.
 
I think PCB has done well so far but don't know what happened here - QEA Trophy, National T20, Pak vs Zim series, Pak vs Sa series, Women's matches but a mistake in PSL put everything in panic mode.
 
Disaster for PCB

I saw players coming out of buses and people outside the bus were not wearing mask.
 
Good decision but a little too late imo. It has been shocking to see the careless attitude in the sub continent during this pandemic. Not only during PSL but also during the on going test matches. People running around without masks. What did they expect?
 
Even though it is very embarrassing for this to happen, it's a good decision from the organizers to postpone the tournament.
 
What a farce, was looking forward to the weekend games. Thank you, PCB.

Bigger, more prominent leagues (not managed by Pakistanis, for those who suffer from inferiority complex) like MLB have been compromised.

Hopefully, it doesn't last very long and we're back in action soon.

Lanka Primer league and T10 have been handled successfully
 
The carriers will be more than what it is now. Cluster will be huge

Do you think this was unavoidable or some of the breaches could have been prevented? Also how many of those other prominent leagues were suspended?
 
So will all foreign player go back or Quarantine here. Is there any chance of it to restart after few weeks.
 
I wouldn't blame if a country pulled out of a tour to Pakistan due to covid19 safety worries. The PCB and the franchises have not handled this situation well. This has damaged our reputation to manage a bio secure bubble.
 
I think along with PCB the franchise & player have also need to take responsibility. PZ set very bad example by threatening to boycott and i have seen all owner mingling with team (though they are not part of bubble)
Somehow they need to isolate all, test, create new bubble after few weeks and restart.
 
How non members of the bio secure bubble were allowed to interact with players is absolutely mind boggling. While most of the blame here lies with the PCB, this is just a further reflection of our peoples attitude when it comes to handling covid. And that includes educated people. If the owners themselves had any sense they would know the risks they are exposing their own players too.
 
This is a very disastrous news. the tournament was shaping nicely, everything going along well and suddenly the tournament is suspended and most likely no more for this year.

Really was looking fwd to today match and then this, Now cancelling my subscriptions and another disaster, Provider saying no chance of partial reimbursement.

Exactly, I think the franchise/player are equally responsible for this chaos
 
They should not have postponed it just kick the foreign players out.

Most of pakistan is oblivious to covid and no one is even bothered about it.
 
I´m disappointed, utterly disappointed, but not even one bit surprised. The tournament, I think, hadn´t even kicked off yet when Daren Sammy and Wahab Riaz I think had breached the security protocol. Negligence wins in the end, sadly.
 
Media reports allege that the hotel in which the players and officials were staying was not biosecure. There was no check on people coming in and out of the hotel and that there were even wedding events taking place there.

Also reports that the PCB did not provide any SOPs to the franchises in relation to covid protocols.
 
Javed Afridi threatened to boycott if his players were forced to quarantine. After being the one who breached the bubble by meeting his players outside the bubble. He also kept hiring influencers who in no way could've been a part of the bubble.

Salman Iqbal was found consistently in the dugout interacting with the players, whilst not being part of the bio-secure bubbles.

PSL brought its hamary heroes who interacted whilst being outside the bubble.

The PCB increased the allocation of seats from 20% to 50% with no reason except greed for more ticket sales.

Imagine the franchises that followed the SOP and operated in the bubble. PCB has really **** the bed in this one and I hope they get what they deserve with other countries cancelling the tours due to the incompetence and arrogance.
 
Shocking!! Organizing an event like PSL, IPL during covid time is not an easy task due to population and careless attitude of everyone.
Interesting to see how BCCI manages IPL next month. Unfortunate state of PSL should be learning for them to maintain strict protocols.

This is it , it’s a total shambles and incompetence demonstrated by the organisers/PCB.

How on earth do you go from increasing crowds from 20 to 50 per cent and there was even talk of 100% crowd allocation for finals , and then announce the tournament is suspended due to Covid outbreak less than a week later.
 
UK is finally recovering from covid and vaccine drive is in full swing. By June we are in the all clear here.

I suspect the problems are just starting for places like Pakistan with not enough money or a mechanism to deliver a vaccine drive. Time for you to live with covid for a long time.

That sounds like the case here. There were no issues with biosecurity in those recent international series, yet all hell breaks loose in PSL.
 
I'm not sure I agree with this decision. I agree that the bio secure bubble is clearly non-existent, which is why multiple players are getting infected. However the answer to that is surely to toughen the bubble immediately after the Fawad case to ensure no more lapses.

It seems the decision has been made that either we have a tournament where owners and other third parties can freely mingle with the teams but if that's not possible, then we have no tournament at all. That surely cannot be right. There's a middle ground here - put in place proper procedures and carry on with life.

It's not like delaying the tournament will make Covid disappear. The PCB and franchises will face the same issue whenever the rest of the tournament takes place.
 
I would like to know what kind of a bio secure bubble was created.

I saw people (guests, owners, journalists, etc) in the ground with players and coaching staff. Not sure how a bubble is created in this circumstances.

And with the crowd capacity increasing overtime during the matches, certainly the covid-19 situation must be getting better, no?

If that's how it was managed, PCB management deserves criticism it's receiving.
 
Will not be surprised if some players back out of IPL seeing this incident might propel the BCCI to go for even stricter bubble env.

Without the participation of foreign players this is just a domestic T20 tournament. I wont watch that...

Exactly. Even domestic tournaments like Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, National T20 tournaments for both 1st and 2nd XIs, plus women's cricket, were all held in bubbles successfully. Team owners seem to have too much power in PSL

I bet many of these players wait every year for the IPL so they can make easy money.

I think it might just get moved to UAE again.
 
Sad, I know it's difficult to control but they same board and management did it for Internationals. how could it happen now?

Horrible news, we couldn't even maintain a biosecure bubble for the players. International players started to tour Pakistan and now all of them will have second thoughts.

Firstly crowds should not have been allowed for the matches. secondly, all these so-called celebrities were performing the act of contamination well for their air time.
 
Very sad....I was enjoying PSL in Sky Sports during this lockdown. Having said that, still remember many posters were happy when IPL had to play in Dubai due to Covid. Hope they got the lesson that a virus don't discriminate by countries.

Can a decision like this be taken without the approval of Imran Khan?

It might be that the situation is more serious than is known now. Or they're aware of things that will make this worse.
 
This is the right decision and should not be thought of as embarrassing. The PCB has put player safety first while many football leagues around the globe have had far more positive tests, in some cases entire teams have tested and matches have carried on.

The issue sadly is a lack of professionalism in Pakistan cricket culture, everyone is coming out with revelations now and trying to one up each other.
 
This is depressing to say the least, was looking forward to the LQ game today.

Well on the plus side players get a break before the SA series and Zimbabwe series next month.
 
This is completey rubbish, I was so looking forward to the rest of the games but its been scupperred now.

I dont understand how this happened, we hosted the Pakistan v South Africa series succesfully without any issues but yet the PSL has been affected badly. There will need to be accountability, who is to blame? Wahab Riaz and Darren Sammy, if that is the case then Javed Afridi who was behind the "boycott" then they should be punished.

The blame game has started and lot of rumours will come out. The franchise owners, all of them are common stakeholders and should be working very closely together to protect their investment.
Seems like some of the owners are.. Well what can i say... of the highest order.. and they want their friends and relatives some access to the players to show off. Well it has come back to bite them hard.

Its a real mess. Potentially gr8 tournament just got ruined because of few arrogant/stupid/irresponsible persons.
 
Most of the people wanted to see this anyhow after the news of the first case broke out.

Look I respect that, don't get me wrong, but you either cancel all cricket until covid ends, which may mean another 100 years, or 50 yrs or 20 yrs, or 1 Yr, whatever it is. If you are playing, then expect these kind of situations to arise. It is expected. Don't talk **** later, as if oh! How did this happen and all that crap.
 
And the drama continues.
Life in Pak is going on and no there are no overloaded hospitals or massive increase in deaths.

This drama really needs to stop but seeing the reactions on here it seems 99% understands it.
 
This is a complete failure of the PCB administration. There was no biosecure bubble. The so called bubble was being openly violated on national/international TV. Additional blame needs to go to the franchise owners openly violating it particularly Javed Afridi and Salman Iqbal.

This. I know a bio bubble doesnt eliminate the possibility of someone testing positive but it seriously REDUCES the impact big time and I know players these days are fed up of bio bubble, dont get much interaction with the outside world its either that or risking your own life and putting others at risk.

Agreed. All the other domestic events and international series were successfully held, I believe PCB should have been strict with the policies in PSL as well rather than allowing franchises to have their way.
 
Chalo, it was fun as long as it lasted. Every single person/company want to take advantage of cricket and earn quick bucks. When they are arranging a cricket tournament why can’t they just stick to cricket? All the other stuff going on near boundary line, Hamaray heroes, celebs getting interviewed, Ariel adverts you name it are really not necessary under these circumstances.

Thank you, took the words right out of my mouth.

In COVID times this should've been a stripped down, basic cricket tournament with no crowds. Pakistan's vaccination programme is not at the stage where SOPs can be relaxed.

But this is the problem I've had with PSL since Day 1. What happened to cricket actually being about the cricket ? All these third class celebrities, brand ambassadors and corporate hangers on who know nothing about the sport are so desperate to grab their piece of the limelight, even in middle of a pandemic, and the PCB are too happy to indulge.

I'd tell them all to get lost, if you want to watch then tune in from home. If you want to do one of these cringy pitchside interviews and flog your C grade film, song or product, log onto Zoom. But you have no business at the grounds.
