HBL PSL Draft 2022

The PCB has decided the HBL PSL Draft 2022 will be held at the High Performance Centre in Lahore on Sunday, 12 December, with the event to kick-off at 3pm.

Each side will come to the draft with a maximum of eight player retentions from the last event. Following the finalisation of player categories, the transfer and retention window is now officially open and will close on 10 December.

In the Platinum Category, Lahore Qalandars will have the first pick, followed by Multan Sultans, Karachi Kings, Islamabad United, Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators. Lahore Qalandars will have the first pick in the Diamond Category, followed by Peshawar Zalmi, Islamabad United, Quetta Gladiators, Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans.

Lahore Qalandars will have the first pick in the Gold Category, Peshawar Zalmi will have the first pick in the Silver Category, Lahore Qalandars will have the first pick in Emerging Category and Quetta Gladiators will have the first pick in Supplementary Category.

Local players’ category renewals

The PCB, following a review and assessment process, has updated local players’ categories.

In the biggest moves, Pakistan wicketkeeper/batter and Multan Sultan’s captain Mohammad Rizwan (previously Silver), Asif Ali of Islamabad United (previously Gold) and Lahore Qalandars’ Haris Rauf (previously Diamond) have been placed in Platinum Category.

Multan Sultans’ Sohaib Maqsood, who was Player of HBL PSL 6, and Haider Ali of Peshawar Zalmi have moved up from Silver and Gold Categories to Diamond Category, respectively.

Wonder how much will the UAE T20 competition figure in decision on dates etc?

Any news on the international players available in the draft?

Looking forward.

Pakistan’s WC performance has really improved my appetite for some cricket again.

PSL is a solid competition. Just needs a few tweaks but the cricket is top notch

Draft is on December 12, but no list of retained players yet, no list of new draft players yet, and they think that they are competing IPL.

Absolutely. The only thing I would hope to see is if more teams can give opportunities to young Pakistani batsmen in the top 4.

They may be trying to compete with IPL when it comes to coverage and broadcasting, but the actual cricket itself is very good.

I only watched Zalmi games last year because of Haider Ali. Fans are really starving to watch young batsman bat as well.

I really hope Abdullah,Nasir Nawaz,Muhammed Harris get picked as the emerging category.

What a farce. It feels like every season LQ gets first pick.

It should be QG with the first pick because they finished last in the previous edition.

Truly is a face, especially with them being final in the order.

How do they determine the order of picks?

Yeah that's a big question mark. Also, it looks like a lot of the Pakistani players (e.g. Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Imad Wasim, Asif Ali) have put themselves up as platinum. Of they're retained, it gives teams (especially LQ and KK) very little scope for getting top rated foreign platinum picks in.

For e.g., with in QG, only Sarfaraz is platinum and if they actually don't pick him, they could get three actual platinum picks. However, they're pick number mat work against them. But it may not if other teams have retained platinum Pakistan players already

In its seventh season, the Financials for the PSL should have been a lot better and the pay to the players and officials should have increased. You are not going to attract the Maxwells, Warners, ABD of the world which such poor pay

Platinum 1 - First pick Lahore
Diamond 1 - First pick Lahore
Gold 1 - First pick Lahore
Emerging 1 - First pick Lahore

But I guess it balances out because they get last pick in both the supplementry rounds 🤷 🤔 😏

Just what the league needs Tanvir Afridi Malik and Hafeez no substitute for experience.

:malik

I really hope Abdullah,Nasir Nawaz,Muhammed Harris get picked as the emerging category.

I feel Muhammad Harris is a solid batsman more suited to longer format. Don't see him doing well in T20's for the moment.

7th season and still no solid international superstar!

We are going nowhere with this approach/window!

There are bigger stars available in T10, Canada tournaments as compared to PSL!

I’ve seen some leaked rumours of foreign players available. Very underwhelming names considering this is the 7th season of PSL! Only Jason Roy and Rashid Khan are stand out availabilities.

No breakthrough when it comes to the foreign players. The same old roster. The leagues value will not improve if you keep doing the same thing again and again and expect different results

Some of the foreign players who have registered for the draft are mentioned below.

Platinum Category

Tabraiz Shamsi*, David Miller, Rilee Rossouw, Marchant de Lange (South Africa)

Tymal Mills*, Jason Roy*, James Vince, Liam Livingstone, David Willey (England)

Chris Gayle* (West Indies)

Colin Munro (New Zealand)

Isuru Udana, Thisara Perera (Sri Lanka)

Rashid Khan* (Afghanistan)

* Indicates that a player is available for limited number of matches only

Diamond Category

James Faulkner, Ben Cutting, Ben Dunk (Australia)

Lewis Gregory, Alex Hales, Harry Brook, Joe Clarke, Samit Patel, Dan Lawrence (England)

Imran Tahir, Dane Vilas (South Africa)

David Wiese (Namibia)

Kusal Mendis, Dushmantha Chameera (Sri Lanka)

Fabian Allen, Sherfane Rutherford (West Indies)

Hazratullah Zazai, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Najibullah Zadran, Qais Ahmad (Afghanistan)

Surprised that LQ did not retain David Wiese.

Local players

As far a local players are concerned, 495 cricketers have been included in Gold, Silver and Emerging Categories.

Abdullah Shafique, Abid Ali, Ahmed Shehzad, Azhar Ali, Bilal Asif, Fawad Alam, Umar Akmal, Haris Sohail, Junaid Khan, Khurram Manzoor, Rumman Raees, Saud Shakeel, Tabish Khan and Yasir Shah are some of the players in the Gold category.

If PSL want to attract the biggest names then they need to offer 500k$ at least in Platinum category.

The biggest names in cricket are missing. Maxwell, Warner, Stokes, Russell, Rabada etc.

There are so many leagues now

LPL in Sri Lanka

T10 and new T20 league in UAE

CPL in Caribbean

Big Bash in AUS

Blast and THE100 in England

BPL in Bangladesh

Canada and USA will soon also have league.

Players have lots of league to choose from. So PSL has to be succesful because of Pakistani players and not overseas players.

Also PSL has to pay big bucks to attract the biggest talent.

I'd want to see someone like Ahsan Ali get a chance in the PSL, his form in the QEA has been exemplary and it'd be interesting to find out if he can translate that to T20 cricket.

I'd be surprised if any of the franchises manage to think out of the box though.

A top player earns around $1.4 Million in IPL. In PSL he would earn around $160,000.

Playing two seasons of IPL gives u the money equal to playing PSL every year in your entire cricketing career (18 yrs)

To make it worse, the raise of UAE T20 League (which has three IPL franchises and one who bid for an IPL franchise) and 90- Bash being played during the same time (Jan - Mar) will put at end to whatever (3-4 top) players they were able to get in the earlier seasons.

If I’ve to be honest I don’t see PSL surviving in the long term (after 2025 when the contract of the current franchises end).

They need to do 3 things if they want to survive in this cash rich market

- Pay at least $500,000 to top players
- Play somewhere between Jun - Sep to avoid clash with UAE T20 League, Ninety-90 Bash, BBL, T10
- Bring in the Auction system so that you can pay the player based on his quality (and also avoid paying more to undeserving players)

Ramiz Raja is aiming to change the PSL window to the summers with a focus on playing games in the relatively cooler areas in Pakistan ie Abbotabad, Gilgit Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Quetta, Gwadar. If the PCB can play a decent amount of psl games in the summers in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Multan, Peshawar, Abbotabad, Gilgit Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Quetta, Gwadar, it will be a better option for the league though the PCB will have to stomach a lot of travelling and lodging costs

That’s not possible at all to play there and it’s just wishful thinking

Reasons
- Gilgit, Muzaffarabad is in Kashmir. BCCI would not let foreign players go there

- Quetta, Gwadar, Abbottabad due to security reasons, lack of good stadiums and not many will pay for the tickets

PSL should be played in 4-5 major cities only (KR, LHR, ISB, MLT, PSW)

PSL usually is for 30+ days (not more)

Best is to play in major cities between September 15 - October 20. It has lit it benefits

1) It’s not a home season for none of the SENA teams (or Windies) and hence more Actual foreign players available

2) Played in Major cities hence more ticket sales

3) More high quality players = more viewership and more revenue hence gradual increase in its overall quality

4) Away from IPL, UAE T20, Big Bash, T10, and every other league

BCCI should not blatantly sabotage the PSL.

Abbottabad and Gwadar is one of the most beautiful areas of Pakistan. The ICC went wah wah over the Gwadar Stadium. The PCB is looking to get these stadiums up to par and have signed a MOU with the provincial govts in this regards. The Locals in these cities are extremely cricket crazy and do not get to enjoy international cricket at all, if the opportunity arises, they will spring in droves to watch the matches. The key is to space it out and hold max of 2-3 games in these cities rather than most of them to erode interest

The PCB will need to ensure the PSL is not clashing with its own international commitments in the summers and in Sept, Oct. If it is then it has to renegotiate other dates for their international commitments with the teams.

Heat will be a big challenge in the Summers and October, November so the PCB will have to invest in Ice Vests, Provide high quality AC facilities, Drinks and will also need to ensure the games are held at night (even back to back games).

But BCCI WILL and PCB can’t do nothing. Also holding games in the places u mentioned will be a logistical knockout.

It should be between Sep End-Oct-Nov. Just like how it is Jan End-Feb-Mar currently. And should be arranged accordingly based on International series and tournaments in the FTP

Ideally there needs to be agreement between the Boards regarding timetabling these tournaments. However that is unlikely to happen, given Boards will want their own exclusive slots.

Lol why are we giving Afghan players contracts? We should not let them play PSL, instead we should've had either young and upcoming talent or players from different international teams.

Each franchise wants to win the final so it makes sense for it to get the best players from home and abroad.People want to see a good contest so that is another reason to recruit players from different countries.Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan will improve now.The corrupt anti Pakistan elements have been kicked out.A lot of them have fled abroad.

PSL is a solid competition. Just needs a few tweaks but the cricket is top notch

I am someone who rarely follows T20 leagues but have found myself following the PSL and BBL, due to both having great cricket.

The PSL would benefit from maybe 2 more teams, more local players in the top order for batting and a group structure rather than a round robin. Oh and more games at actual team home grounds!

I still think it's an extremely bad idea. Firstly, they shouldn't benefit from our help and should look to sort their own house out first. I highly doubt relations will improve given their racist views towards Pakistani Punjabis will still be present. If the franchises want to win, they can look to other countries for top talents, there's plenty of them in SENA countries.

Yes let's do the same thing we accuse the IPL of doing against our players. Fantastic logic.

There aren't many big names who have registered for the draft, disappointed tbh.
Franchises and the PCB need to increase the wallets in order to attract big names.
It's been 7 years now, still no big names.

I haven't said anything wrong. We all know about the issues happening in their country and how a large majority of them are taught how bad us Pakistanis (Punjabis especially) are which is completely wrong. In an ideal world, I would love to have their player play in the PSL but sadly a lot of South Asians follow politics religiously and worship politicians. Sadly, that isn't the case so it would make sense to ban their players playing in PSL, not allow any former Pakistani player to coach them and finally look to batter them in ICC tournaments when the opportunity arrives.

The retention, trade and release window of the HBL Pakistan Super League 2022 closed on Friday afternoon with Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars and Peshawar Zalmi consuming their full allocation of eight retentions, while Multan Sultans and Quetta Gladiators retaining seven players each.

Action will now shift to the National High Performance Centre on Sunday, 12 December, at 1500 PKT when the HBL PSL Player Draft 2022 will take place for which more than 425 players from 32 countries have registered. So Quetta did in fact have some clear out. Personally thought it would be best if Faheem Ashraf was let go. He's not a good T20 player in my opinion.

Lol, Lahore's team management. Wasted a couple of silver picks by retaining Sohail and Ahmed

They will probably go for Fakhar, Samit Patel, Dunk and Faridoun in draft. If they do, they will deserve to end up last in the coming season again.

Islamabad Traded Hussain Talat for Zalmi's silver round second pick

There are many excellent players in gold and silver both in local and foreign, Teams should not waste their gold and silver on Sohail Akhtar Hussain talent e.t.c.

Blessing Muzarabani, Akila Danjaya, Jayden seals, Kamran Ghulam, Agha Salman, Kashif Ali(English, great hitter in KPL), Tom Abell(Great top 3 batsman from vitality blast, beautiful technique and temperament) just to name few are in gold and silver.

In my opinion, teams should fill bowlers and batsmen slots from silver and gold, they will give excellent combination and only target best of best from Platinum, hope no one wastes platinum pick onChris Jordan just to fill their bowling quota, there are local and foreign silver bowlers who can do the job perfectly.

T10 and LPl performers are likely to be in gold as well.

Sahibzada Farhan has been in good form and could be a useful pick in the draft.

Abdullah Shafique is another who one would expect to be picked.
