PSL6 - Those that missed out on selection

Following Pakistan cricket has become very depressing. I know Chief Destroyer who is genuinely one of the best posters on this forum has stopped following cricket altogether ever since Misbah came.
How many more such fans are they going to turn off?
There is hardly any good news these days.

Omar associates literally even had a team in the Sri Lankan league yet they ignored everyone there. Moin said we needed experience so we got Shinwari. It's not just the decisions that are weird, it's the thought processes that are behind them. Do these people even watch cricket?

Lahore is the most brain-dead franchise in the entire sporting universe. It has been six years and their player development program has produced two average cricketers yet they continue to give it priority over the proven PCB system that's there for their own benefit. Aqib continues to get a gig with a coaching philosophy that revolves around "baray player ko kia sikhaana, us ko sab khud pata hai". Stop taking your salary and just stay at home, the players know what they are doing then.

Islamabad and Multan claim that they have the data so their decisions are data-centric. I mean Shan Masood as a captaincy candidate would not be the answer no matter what algorithm and deep-learning heuristic you employ.

I don't even want to know what Karachi does or doesn't do.

Zalmi got two token Chinese players to increase their market size but they can't see the next-door cricket crazy nations that can add immense value to the tournament and their brand. I mean the entire nation of Nepal would watch your matches if you have Sandeep in the squad, even if he isn't in the playing eleven and he's a half-decent player.

It feels they are almost there yet they manage to mess up the entire thing in such a spectacular manner that there's nothing but frustration left. The more things change, the more they remain the same with this lot.

Lol. Same here have had enough of this rubbish. Friends and people with connections getting picked.

Haven't watched a single match live since 2018. Makes for a nice 6 week cricket detox - better than rueing why young local batsmen are sitting on bench or watching reliu kattas look like kings.

It's just another easy paycheck for journeymen cricketers while selection policies are often based on friendships not merit. Lahore plucking randoms off the street is an insult to our cricket system and pathway.

No, Umer Khan was not picked by anyone.

Remember watching him bowl at the NSK in the eliminator in 2018, sad that its come down to this because he was absolutely brilliant that day and got applauded by the crowd, but the truth is he has lost form lately and not been good enough.

Still think its harsh on him not to even be on the bench for any franchise.

Honestly top post. You have put down everything I wanted to. I used to think is there a way we can mess up PSL too? And here it is! Sick of seeing Aqib, he's an absolute dinosaur who knows nothing of coaching. How we have missed some quality SL players is horrendous. They still don't know how to market this properly.

A well-thought out post and one that hits the nail on the head and one that those with rose-tinted spectacles will not approve of.

I worry about the PSL and the direction it is taking. My biggest concern is regarding the hands that some of the franchises are in, who is running the show at those franchises and what they are doing.

Those that can see behind the scenes and can see through what is going on will share my concerns.

Ahmed Shehzad & Junaid would be gutted to miss out even as supplementary picks. World has really come down crashing for both of them. This really sucks. How can Shehzad miss when the likes of Maqsood get picked, and how can Junaid miss when bowlers inferior to him got selected. What even!

I have a lot of respect for Junaid but he literally singlehandedly cost Multan the playoff vs Qalandars, unfortunately he is too unreliable now.

As for Shehzad, he needs to work hard and get runs in domestic to prove his case, he was terrible last year in PSL too.

As per Ali Tareen, he wasnt involved in the draft this year.

Agreed. I don't follow this circus too much. This year plan is to watch highlights here and there and watch babar bat. Other then that no interest. Haider Ali would have been much better if he didnt play in this circus last year.

Abdullah Shafique is the biggest miss for me. From being talked up as the potentially best young batsman in the country to not getting picked. All in a month. Just reflects the fickleness of the country that is Pakistan.

Outside of Nawaz and Abdullah, do really any of them have a legitimate case? They're mostly FC players or haven't proven much in domestic in cases like Mohsin/Badar. Maybe Ali Imran as he shown ability to play pretty quick.

Kamran Ghulam SR was pretty low in FC throughout the season and his List A/T20 track record shows he just doesn't play quick. We should worry about this selection for the Test squad, not T20's. Pretty much the same for Saud who is just not a T20 player. I am fine with them not trying to ruin or potentially have guys like Ghulam/Saud/Mubasir/Abdullah discarded forever if they don't happen to perform in T20's. For each of them, I don't think its a format that really suits their abilities.

You make a good point, but it would have benefited some very talented guys to play under pressure under the guidance of some decent international coaches/players.

Guys like Abdullah Shafique, Hasan Mohsin, Saif Badar had a good T20 tournament in October. Someone like Mubasir Khan or Nasir Nawaz have shown some potential in the recently concluded games.

Muhammad Akhlaq replaced Kami for CP and hit some massive sixes. Not to forget scored a hundred last week in list A.

You see Quetta and Lahore picking some really random guys and you think why? Anyway I am glad that these lads are getting enough exposure in FC/list A under this new system.

The bitter truth of PSL draft is that it established one truth : it’s not IPL or any other Franchise league, rather the biggest competitor of PSL is international cricket.

The earlier PCB realises that, it’ll be better for PSL and it might be scheduled during IPL - even with 10-12 IPL teams, the leftovers will make it a much better draft.

Umar Amin is also not in any team. His chances of making a comeback to Pakistan team are pretty much gone. He had his chances, can't blame anyone but himself. I had great hopes on him .

Ehsan Adil - with the 2nd best strike rate and 3rd best avg. among fast bowlers in recent National T20 Cup not picked up by any franchise?

It’s the fourth best strike rate and 5th best average. His economy, though, is number 20 on the list at a shocking 8.76. We have to be careful with stats, you always need to look at at the entire picture rather than take out the ones that favor you.

Further, his team, Central Punjab, finished last in the cup and his wickets had little to no impact whatsoever in taking key wickets at key moments. Going through the actual scorecards now, 4 of his 13 wickets came from tailenders, and another 3 from allrounders hitting out at the death.

His best match figures in the cup were 3/40 against Balochistan, where the 3 wickets were Amad Butt, Yasir Shah, and Umaid Asif.

He also doesn’t fit into an emerging category.
