PTI candidate Ikramullah Gandapur killed in suicide attack in DI Khan [Update Post #18]

DI KHAN: Few days after the suicide attack on the Awami National Party (ANP)’s corner meeting where its central leader and election candidate Haroon Bilour was martyred along with 19 others, another political party comes under fire in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), this time Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Ikramullah Khan Gandapur was injured in a suicide bombing on the outskirts Dera Ismail Khan on Sunday.

The PK-99 candidate was on his way to a corner meeting when the suicide bomber targeted his vehicle near Kolachi area injuring Gandapur, his driver and two policemen, DPO DI Khan said.

He added that the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Police had assigned 13 gunmen for the PTI leader’s security, however, he chose to travel without alerting local authorities. The security forces had conveyed death threats to Gandapur on Saturday.

Gandapur served as minister for agriculture and livestock in during PTI’s tenure in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P). His brother, Israrullah Gandapur, who served as law minister was killed in a bomb blast at their residence in October 2013.

PTI candidate Ikramullah Gandapur killed in suicide attack in DI Khan

Ikramullah Gandapur, an election candidate of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), succumbed to grave injuries sustained in a suicide blast in Dera Ismail Khan on Sunday, police said. Authorities confirmed that he passed away at the hospital where he was bring treated.

Confirming the PTI leader's death, DI Khan DPO Manzoor Afridi told Dawn.com that at least eight to 10 kilogrammes of explosive material was used in the attack.

Earlier in the day, Afridi had also confirmed that the bombing, which took place in Kulachi area, was a suicide attack. Gandapur was contesting elections on a provincial assembly seat from PK-99 constituency.

According to hospital sources, the PTI leader's driver was also killed in the attack while his guard is said to be in a critical condition at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH).

Police said that the candidate was targeted near his residence when he was going to a political convention.

Gandapur served as the provincial agricultural minister in the PTI-led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet. He was elected through a by-election on the Dera Ismail Khan PK-67 seat, after it was vacated following the death of his brother Law Minister Israrulah Gandapur in a suicide attack.

Earlier, PTI Chief Imran Khan had taken to Twitter to condemn the "cowardly terrorist attack".

The attack comes only days after the house of a senior leader of Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) was attacked in Gwadar on Tuesday. According to sources, Abdul Ghafoor Hoat was inside the house when unidentified gunmen fired shots at his house. He, however, escaped unhurt.

The most fatal election-related attack took place in Mastung on July 13 during a corner meeting organised by Mir Siraj Raisani — a BAP candidate for PB-35 (Mastung). The deadly suicide blast claimed the lives of nearly 150 people while injuring more than 200.
