The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf led federal government has reportedly decided to disband the Ruet-i-Hilal committees at all levels and entrust the task of moon sighting to the Meteorological Department.

Reports in local media suggest the decision was made in the wake of repeated nuisance following the controversial decisions of moon sightings by the committees in the past, which cost millions to the national exchequer.

The decision will also help to end the confusion on the sighting of the moon for when the month would start and end, according to reports.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), which is well-equipped to predict moon birth in advance based on scientific calculations, is to be tasked with the job, the reports added.

It is a popular belief that in any Islamic state, the right of announcement for moon sighting for Eid and Ramazan is the authority of the state.

Meanwhile on Sunday, Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee chairman Mufti Muneeb ur Rehman announced that the crescent of Jamadi-ul-Awal has not been sighted and the 1st Jamadi-ul-Awal 1440 Hijri will be on Tuesday.

He announced this after chairing the meeting of Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee in Karachi today.

What a good decision wow. Hope the mullah brigade doesnt take it personally. They need to be made irrelevant slowly and steadily.

ISLAMABAD: Recently reports had surfaced that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government had decided to disband the committee across the province.

Dismissing the reports, spokesperson for the ministry said the government had made no such decision regarding disbanding of the committee. “The decision to abolish Ruet-e-Hilal Committee does not fall under a federal ministry,” he added.

Sources in the ministry explained to The Express Tribune that the move would need consultation with stakeholders. “Abolishing the committee will need legislation through Parliament,” he added.

The Ruet-e-Hilal Committee was tasked to announce sighting of the new moon with help from the Pakistan Meteorological Department. It is currently being chaired by Mufti Muneebur Rehman.

It was first set up in 1974 under a resolution passed by the Zulfikar Ali Bhutto-led government in the National Assembly. The committee has been carrying out its functions at federal and district levels. It is pertinent to note that no actual legislation or rules were framed since its establishment.

In 2016, a parliamentary panel had questioned the legal status of the committee.

It turns out be another fake news from our irresponsible media .. they are working over time to spread fake news about the govt. It's really become a joke now ..

PTI doesn’t have the spine to take such decisions. Gullible PTI supporters were doing bhangra for nothing.

Chalo, atleast they took a U-turn very quick this time

this is called leaking news.

You leak news and then see what will be the reaction. After analyzing the reaction, only then you come out and accept or deny it.

Point being, always float with the tide.
Only strong leaderships have the ability to go against the tide.

So are you saying the reaction to this news was negative?

Didn't appear to be the case based on the first replies on this thread - including your own.

Majority of PP posters from Pakistan are upper/upper middle class therefore their views on public opinion should be taken with a pinch of salt.
Most of Pakistan's population comprises of Paindoos similar to the cow belt of India.

you cannot take the views of ppers as a sample, becasue majority of them live abroad, or the ones living here are mostly from the urban side.

TO be honest, we aren't even the real Pakistani's. We dont represent them. The real Pakistanis are those living in Rural side as they are in majority. I realized this point in economics, because price of wheat doesn't affect us much as it does to them. Thus when we calculate inflation we place more weightage on wheat.
