I'm curious as to who is going to decide what's vulgar, and what isn't? I understand a level of decency should be kept in public, but I don't want to see a radicalization of public spaces.

For example:

Are we going to start seeing harmless posters like this being removed from cinemas because Maya Ali is wearing a knee-length dress, and Ali Zafar is holding her? The fact is that, people who have problems with something like this are unlikely to even visit a cinema. And also, why does the government get a say in what photos a private business displays inside their building?

From what I understand, Fayyaz ul Hasan Chohan is behind this.

I am honestly not sure why this guy has been given such an important position in Punjab. There is absolutely nothing impressive or likeable about him. PTI need to avoid bringing these ex-Jamatis into the party, and they should especially not be given any important posts. These guys are going to cast a huge shadow over any good work being done by PTI. Pakistan simply cannot afford to go any further down the path of extremism, the exact opposite is needed.

Why does society need to be dictated by the whims a small group of men who want to impose their ultra conservative views on everyone else?

Exactly what i was going to say, this is what you get if you appoint Fayaz Chohan on such a position. They need to understand that he is not in opposition and you no longer need such a person to counter propaganda. Information minister pretty much becomes face of the party and Fayaz is not a typical PTI face, jamatia inside him is coming out.
Surely there would be some material that may need to be banned but by the looks of it he would ban most of posters that are harmless to most people. And why on earth is this a priority anyway? Fawad Ch may have made a stupid casual statement about helicopter cost but he is overall a very good information minister. Punjab is also 50% of Pakistan and someone like Chohan is not great representation of PTI.

Fayyazul Hassan Chohan at the centre of bad press after remarks against stage actors

LAHORE: Punjab Information and Culture Minister Fayyazul Hassan Chohan, whose primary responsibility is to get good press for his government, has himself attracted bad press by using indecent remarks against film and stage actors at a public forum.

People from all walks of life chided the minister for his below-the-belt remarks against film and theatre actors.

As he banned on Thursday display of, what he says, indecent film signboards within and outside cinema halls, Mr Chohan had made this announcement a day earlier in a public meeting that was attended by women among others.

Explaining his mind about the removal of ‘vulgar and indecent film signboards inside and outside the cinema halls’, the minister said pictures of `half-naked’ women were displayed inside and outside cinema houses. For that`purpose’, he said, people go and watch porn.

After explaining ‘vulgarity’ in cinema houses, the minister turned to theatre and told the audience that the information and culture department told him that ‘theatre” was not under his domain. Saying that he was trying to bring this (theatre) in his jurisdiction, the minister added, “I would ensure that Nargis became Haji Nargis and Megha was on fasting for 300 days a year instead of 30 days (in Ramazan).”

The footage of the minister’s speech went viral on social and electronic media.

Shockingly, the audience cheered and clapped whenever the minister spoke against the actresses and the showbiz industry. Mr Chohan said that not only Indian movies the Pakistani theatre was also equally responsible for damaging the culture and showbiz industry in Pakistan. He said cinema owners should remove vulgar and indecent posters of women within three days. In case of violation, cinemas would be sealed after warning.

Both Nargis and Megha, famous stage actress of yesteryears, responded sharply to the remarks by Mr Chohan. Ms Nargis told a private TV channel that the minister should have chosen decent words while speaking about a woman, who has left the showbiz industry and is leading a peaceful family life abroad. “I reserve the right to approach court,” she warned.

Soon after, Megha also appeared on a private TV channel and said the minister should be ashamed to use indecent language about her.

Minister Chohan, known for using hard language and calling names of his opponents on TV talk shows, also attracted criticism on Thursday for using abusive language against the team of a private TV channel for running the clips of his old statement against railways minister Sheikh Rashid. While removing mikes, Mr Chohan uttered four letter words against the media team. This was captured on a mobile phone and its footage went viral causing embarrassment to the PTI’s newly installed government in the centre and Punjab.

Punjab Senior Minister Aleem Khan had to extended apology to the public, saying, “Chohan is a new minister, he will learn soon”.

Following backlash against him on social and electronic media, Mr Chohan also released his two video messages tendering apology to Nargis and Megha.

Addressing Nargis in a video message, Mr Chohan called her a “shining star of film and theatre industry” in Pakistan. He said Nargis was an ambassador of Pakistan in the world.

In the video message for Megha, he said she was an asset of the country. “We all need to work together and break the hegemony of the Indian film industry that left Pakistani film industry far behind with its better stories and depiction as well as use of latest technology,” he said.

Prime Minister Imran Khan might be feeling the heat of the controversies created by the statements and actions of his team in Punjab. He is coming to Lahore on Saturday for the first time after assuming the office of country’s chief executive. A host of issues (created by his hand-picked political team in Punjab) are waiting for his direct intervention.

Mr Khan is expected to meet and address the Punjab chief minister and his cabinet explaining his vision of Naya Pakistan and addressing the issues being created by his political team (within a first few days of the government).

Really need to be careful here for PTI as they cant be liberal/fundamentalist/other - need a middle ground

This guy needs to be fired, he's a radical. Punjab needs a liberal, forward-thinking information minister.

We want entertainment without following Bollywood. If film posters are sexually provocative then they should be removed.

We as Men are attracted to pretty women or even half decent looking women in general. The above Ali Zafer poster looks like they are lovers and he is carrying her to la la land. From what I read on this board, it is not Islamic.

As usual it will be the liberals who will be supporting vulgarity and everything which is immoral, but they have the nerve to blame us conservatives who are against crass consumerism and commercialism and want a society full of morals and manners.

What is moral for you is immoral for someone else.

Agree, it is an unislamic form of art that is being depicted in the poster and growth of such indeceny should be curtailed at earlier stages or else it will lead to Baywatch Posters in the future.

Indeed. They're slaves to cultural capitalism and its perennial strive to commodify everything, in order to extend the "holy" market.

What Subcontinent people need to accept is it is impossible to shield society from these kinds of things. People watch it what they want to watch no matter how many restrictions are put in.

Sexually provocative content should be banned. Also, I think that Fayyaz ul Hassan is not the only one behind this. I heard Hamza Ali Abbasi in an interview saying that he will make an effort to make censor board more effective.

Active steps should be taken to reduce the significance of Artist, musicians, actors and other exhibitors of lowly professions in society, lowly professionals should be given low respect and little financial incentives, in order to sideline them from society.

lol active steps should be taken to ensure people with silly views such as yours don't get to make decisions about our society

Pakstan is going nowhere with leaders like this comedian. Please remove him.

The test for vulgarity is my view is if this is accepted by most people in our soceity (leave Islam out for the moment, incase I am accused of fundamentalism) and the answer is probably no.

Do you seriously find this poster "sexually provocative"?

If you find something like this inappropriate, then don't visit a cinema. Fine, ban this from being displayed outside a cinema, but why on earth does the government have a problem with this type of poster being displayed INSIDE a cinema, a place where ultra-conservative people probably don't go in any case?

Are they now going to start banning billboards with models advertising clothes? Or all other advertisements with women? This is absolutely ridiculous.

Pakistan needs to move more towards a society where people live to their own values and tolerate each other. This imposing each others' values on each other is the reason for many problems.

See how that's worked for Saudi Arabia and North Korea :))

If we don't push these limits then society will never move forward.

I think if someone needs to be sidelined from society, it's you. Any civilization at it's peak have excelled in fields of education, arts, and culture. No wonder the entire Muslim world is moving backwards, all three of those things have been suppressed in the name of religion.

Love the film title, 'Teefa in trouble'. Bollywood producers must be gnashing their teeth in anguish at Pakistan cinema's ability to sell their films with such catchy film headers.

The girl's cheap blue dress and totally mis-matched thong sandals suggest a cleverly crafted film plot which will draw more discerning film fans like saadibaba and Deadball who will delight in the subtle nuances beneath the apparent low budget quality of the film.

I don’t find it sexually attractive at all.

But based on how Muslim woman usually dress, this is way too much exposure.

This is not art, just cheesy films with same old storylines.
