Qatar releases former Indian navy officers after dropping death sentences[Update # post 208]

Talks. There was never any personal or historic enmity between Qataris or Bangladeshis and Indians.

War is only the last option and that too in extraordinary situations. Most responsible countries prefer to solve issues through dialogue.
Agreed but if the Qataris hang these guys then what should Ind do.

Lucky I subscribe to the Indian Express or I'd have never known this happened.

I'm sure Modiji will intervene in this just like he intervened and stopped the Ukraine-Russia war.
Its all over now, only hope is our Puppu..

Those Indian citizens needs to hang on till 2024 when our Puppu wins; the barrage of diapers that will launched into Qatar will send shivers down the enemy's' spine and they will be released as a result.

Good point

Think General Modi will invade Qatar by tonight and rescue his 8 chaheetay

Qatar Accepts India's Appeal Against Death Penalty To 8 Navy Veterans
All of the officers have a distinguished service record of up to 20 years in the Indian Navy.

New Delhi: A Qatar court has accepted India's appeal against the death penalty to eight former Indian Navy personnel, who were handed the sentence last month in an alleged case of espionage. Sources said that the Qatari court will set a hearing date after examining the appeal.

According to reports, the eight men were arrested in August 2022 by Qatar's intelligence agency for spying. But the Qatari authorities haven't made the charges against them public yet. Their bail petitions were rejected several times and the verdict against them was pronounced last month by the Court of First Instance in Qatar.

Granted consular access to them, Indian authorities have been working to secure their release.

The arrested Indian Navy veterans are Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vasisht and Sailor Ragesh Gopakumar.

All of the former Navy officers have a distinguished service record of up to 20 years in the Indian Navy and have held important positions including that of instructors in the force.

Meetu Bhargava, the sister of one of the former officers detained, had sought help from the government to bring her brother back. In a post on X on June 8, she had appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene.

"These Ex-Navy officers are the pride of the nation & again I request our Hon'ble Prime Minister with folded hands that it is high time that they all are brought back to India immediately without any further delay," read her post, tagged to PM Modi and Union ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh.

If these 8 people were guilty of spying for Israel, they should be hanged. Spying should result in death penalty.

If not hanging, at least lengthy prison sentences (30-40 years).

Qatar would look weak if they release them without punishments.

But it shows the terrorist nature of your country. Yadav was organising terrorist cells in Balochistan, you guys claimed he was a tourisr🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
So why hasn't Qatar hanged these men yet? For that matter, why is Yadav still alive? He should have been strung up by Pakistan a long time ago.
Amazing how these so-called 'exposers of Indian terrorism' stop short everytime India or any international agency raises questions .

A more pertinent question - Why does Pakistan get kicked into the FATF grey list everytime India presents evidence against it?

Hinduon aur Yehudiyon ki saazish, perhaps?

It's upto the Qataris to decide what they do but the idea that you guys aren't going around as terrorists but tourists has blown out of the water. It was Canadad a few weeks ago, this week the Americans had to warn you, we have your "tourist" hanging on for dear life Why is your govt so inclined to terrorism?

Qatar believes in the process of law. Islamic jurisprudence actually laid the basis of western law practice for a long period during the rise of the west.

A Qatar court has dropped the death sentence imposed on eight Indian former naval officers arrested there last year, India's foreign ministry said on Thursday.

The eight men, who were condemned to death in October, had been accused of spying for Israel according to sources - though India and Qatar have not confirmed the charges.

India's foreign ministry did not say what new sentence or penalty the men would now face.

It "noted the verdict today of the Court of Appeal of Qatar" in which the sentences "have been reduced".

"We are in close touch with the legal team as well as the family members to decide on the next steps," and will "continue to take up the matter with the Qatari authorities," it added.

It declined to comment on the case further "due to the confidential and sensitive nature of proceedings".

Qatar and Israel's embassies in New Delhi did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

India expressed shock when Qatar's Court of First Instance imposed the death penalty on the eight men who were working on a submarine project with a private company for the Qatari authorities.

More than 800,000 Indian citizens live and work in Qatar, which is also a significant provider of natural gas for India.

The only truth is economy everything else is such a hogwash.
This proves it again.

Qatar after all still has some sane heads. They were never going to hang the alleged spies. Its about posturing and teaching India a lesson about supporting Israel.

Qatar: Indian ex-naval officers get 'varying' jail terms

Eight former Indian naval officers who were earlier sentenced to death in Qatar now face prison sentences of "varying" lengths, India has said.

The men have 60 days to appeal the jail terms. Last month, a court in Qatar had commuted their death penalties.

Neither Qatar nor India have revealed the specific charges against the men.

But Financial Times and Reuters have reported, citing anonymous sources, that the men were charged with spying for Israel.

India, Qatar and Israel have not commented on this. The court orders in the matter have also not been made public. India has been issuing statements about the major developments in the case, which was seen as a diplomatic test for the government.

In a press briefing on Thursday, Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that the legal team of the men now have access to the court order commuting their death sentences, adding that it was a "confidential document".

"What we can tell you, confirm to you is, that the death penalty has now been converted into varying prison sentences for the eight Indian nationals," he said, adding that they have 60 days to appeal the judgement in the Court of Cassation, Qatar's highest court. He did not disclose the quantum of the jail terms.

"It is for the legal team now to decide the next course of action," he said.

In October 2023, India had said it was "deeply shocked" after the Court of First Instance in Qatar sentenced the men to death.

The foreign ministry said it would explore all legal options and later filed an appeal against the sentence.

The arrest of the men had made front-page headlines in India in 2022.

The Indian government has described the eight men in a statement as employees of a private company called Al Dahra, but they have been widely reported to be former personnel of the Indian Navy.

In parliament, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar described them as "ex-servicemen" of the country. The families of some of the men have also confirmed their identities and background in the Navy to local media.

My view on how this will play out. Eventually they will be deported to India after backchannel talks, along with US. Of course US will extract it's pound of flesh on some other negotiation with India, but I seriously doubt that Qatar will actually execute them.
Wow that happened fast! I thought this saga would last for a couple of years before they get deported but the boys are back in India already!

Great!!! Indian diplomacy at its best ind r the leadership of PM Narendra Modi

Laws of Muslim and Arab nations are tough for non residents, it’s time for amending them…

few years back in UAE, one Indian was awarded death penalty by UAE Supreme Court as one pedestrian was killed when he was driving… it was an accidental death and wasn’t intentional, but court awarded death penalty…. later the relatives of Indian convicts approached Lulu group chairman Yusuf Ali and after his intervention, that Indian was released....

Very serious crimes.

Qatar will want to set an example, it does not care about India's nuclear weapons or economic size due to population.

Spying for Israel with the possibility of intel for terrorist attacks deserve nothing less than being hanged.

I suspect India will send some officials to pick up the bodies.

All of them have come back to India. Sad day for you.

The US and the ME haven't been able to pressure Qatar and this man thinks India can. That too over people that have committed treachery.
If they were spying for Israel, death penalties are justified.

Good move from Qatar.

I wouldnt be surprised if Pakistan had a hand in this, after interogating the spy they caught and also were the major part of security at the World Cup.

Qatar while ISraeli is murdering people will not let them go free.
Shankar talks a good game but lets see if he can get these terrorist spies released.

Qatar should hang them quickly as per their law and move on.

You guys were saying??

What amazes me is that pakistanis think India's diplomatic might is similar to Pakistan!!!

Since Pakistan usually bends to arabs and isn't able to do much, same will apply to India.

This thread shows the hatred posters have for Indians.
Hatred is okay, deletion is not!

Have been to Dubai and Abu Dhabi quite a few times in last 10 years and the difference between how an Indian is treated and how people from rest of south Asia is treated is very different.

And you are lying now. Ask anyone who has lived in the GCC. Not just a stop over connecting flight for 1-2 hours across 10 years. What you are saying is simply not true about treatment.

It's not India vs Pakistan some mudslinging thread. Any post derailing the discussion will be removed. So guys be careful.

a good start might be to allow hold the proverbial mirror to shameless hit and run posters.

This news is not a good look for some of the usual suspects and lets say it puts rasies unflattering questions about their intellect.

Mehh..

If Puppu was the PM Qatar wouldve released the prisoners in 24 hours.

...

On a serious note:

Once again

Modichayan top dawg..

Wow, all the eight sailors are freed.
Modi's government is quite something.
Kudos to FM Jaishankar for achieving this.

From Mandirs being constructed in Arab countries to Indian prisoners being freed.

Power of Modi government....

@DeadlyVenom is this a win for Modi's diplomacy or not? Or Qatar was always friendly and linient with Indian and this has nothing to do with Modi.

This one is a win for sure. There are some rumours of massive blood money type of bond being paid but nevertheless it was a big deal concluded by the Indians.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

Modhi is also culpable.

Israel: If you attack us, we will fight back as self defence and protect our land

Palestine: But that land belong to ours and you forcefully taken it from us first

I'm sure there's a separate thread for this. However, since I touched a nerve, irrational thinking is normal

Qatar has released eight former Indian naval officers previously sentenced to death on charges of spying for Israel.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) thanked Doha on Monday as it announced that the octet had been freed. The details surrounding their arrest, sentencing, and commuting remain unclear.

“We appreciate the decision by the Amir [Emir] of the State of Qatar to enable the release and home-coming of these nationals,” the ministry said in a statement in New Delhi.

The men were reportedly arrested in August 2022, due to accusations that they had passed sensitive submarine-related information to Israeli intelligence. Neither Qatar nor India officially confirmed the charges.

A preliminary court sentenced them to death last year, prompting India to express deep shock and file an appeal.

The MEA confirmed in December that it had gained consular access to the prisoners. Later the same month, it said an appeals court had commuted their death sentence to varying prison terms.

It said on Monday that seven of the men had already returned to India. No further details were given about the eighth man, the conditions of the release, or the current status of the case.

I'm not sure about Blood Money. After all what need does the Qatari government...or basically the Qatari royal family have for money but pretty sure there's a commitment to increase oil purchase from Qatar or something similar.

Which is...fair enough! If the individuals were working for the Indian government, whether spies or otherwise, it was the government's responsibility to bring them back safe no matter the cost.

No matter what I might think of the Modi government, you have to acknowledge their foreign policy adroitness. They've been
- Able to remain uninvolved in a bunch of recent world crises like Russia-Ukraine, Israel-Palestine without angering either side
- Pursue a low intensity war with China while not impacting trade and the economy
- Maintain a consistent, clear and relatively successful policy with regards to Pakistan
- Continue to maintain strategic but low-key influence in important neighbouring countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh & Nepal
- Even when faced with setbacks like the Maldives, they've shown the ability to be restrained and play the long game

Of course, they've been helped by India's rising economic might and the stature that comes with it but even with a good suit, you have to play the cards right in order to win.

The only minor goof-ups are the ridiculous attempts to assassinate irrelevant Punjabi separatists but everyone can be excused a few flubs.

Bro, did you see the power of Modi? When will you guys realize that he is the best thing to have happened for India. Let go this self pride, accept you were wrong and move on. Everyone makes mistakes, so its fine.

But I'm sure irrational thinking can cause mishaps.

I agree. Modi is a stellar politician. He knows when to push and when to fold ( nupur sharma for example)

I only disagreed with @Rajdeep who seems to consider him a revivalist of hindu culture abroad. I think thats too much praise as things like Yoga and overseas mandirs existed long before Modi.

Exactly.

That is the reason why PM Modi is coming back with his 3rd straight victory, while our Oxford Graduate in Pakistan is in jail and our Harvard drop out Puppu is scratching his head in confusion and going nowhere...

Politics are for men, not children, you need to be a shrewd tactician in the big scheme of things..

He is also quite lucky in a sense too because he is backed by a rapidly growing economy, solid technical base, educated population and some financial clout.

Much of that existed before he came into politics due to the work of his predecessors and Indian public.

But yeah he has shown the strength to capitalise on it and expand on it. He is an actual nationalist I think the type who legitimately loses sleep over his country rather than worries about his pockets.

When he took the office, some of the pathways were laid by the Monmohan Government, however overall he inherited mostly a lot of mess. There were so many scams, corruptions issues, etc, by the Congress Government.

2 terms under PM Modi, India's Forex reserves doubled from 298 to 610 Billion, India now has the 4th largest stock market in the world, 5th largest economy in the world etc.

Make in India has steadily progressed with manufacturing and exports; smart phones, automobiles.

Defence sector exports hit close to 2 Billion last year, this is the highest ever and it was was non existent during the Monmohan government regime..

Agreed the Indian PM is a nationalist who puts the country first over anything else, he is probably the most hard working, devoted to the country PM India has ever had till date...

This man knows what he is doing, he is one of a kind from humble beginnings selling tea at a train station born to a lower caste Hindu family to where he is now, is nothing short of inspirational.

Fair enough.

I think it's a combination of Modi manipulating those symbols and events abroad for Political gain and to some extent contributing to them.

Nupur Sharma made a mistake. She is culpable under Indian laws as well.

Gotta give credit to Modi and government, for all the faults they might have the foreign policy with most countries has been spot on.

I don't agree with you on most issues.

It may not mean much to you, but that's your one quality that i have come to appreciate.

I won't mind even if its money paid or some trade promise/agreement in favour of Qatar as long as 'releasing some terrorists for those 8 naval officers' type of deal didn't happen.

Big win for Modi and BJP govt.

Good work by S.Jaishankar and his ministry. He is one of the few BJP ministers that are actually good at their jobs.

Let all his achievements be.

The fact that Modi is hated like crazy by many western and Indian 'left-liberals', and by most Pakistanis only shows that he has been doing a stellar job for India.

From death sentence to being released, everything is about money and economy, should be single focus of every civillization.

Good work by S.Jaishankar and his ministry. He is one of the few BJP ministers that are actually good at their jobs.

Phir bhi Modi ko credit nehi doge

Totally understand your pain today bro...its okay

What did Modi do ? The man cannot even take questions from his own people, shamelessly hasn't given a press conference in 10 years. You think he has the courage to open his mouth and talk to hostile Qatari sheikhs lol ?

All the heavy lifting was done by the experienced foreign policy guru that is Jaishankar. He knows which levers to pull and deploy. Kudos to him and his staff.

What did Modi do? He hired the best man for the job and gave him a free hand. And that is what every good administrator does. It is rather silly to expect the PM of a country to do everything himself.

And if you really think world leaders have to 'open their mouths and talk in a hostile way' to get things done you have no clue how international diplomacy works. Modi has excellent relations with most world leaders despite his heavily accented English. So it is clear that it is not the language or the ability to talk that matters at that level.

Not giving importance to the press is one of the few things I like Modi for. The biased and sell out journalists don't deserve any respect, whichever political spectrum they may belong to. Barkha, sardesai, ravish, arnab and a plethora of low IQ agenda pusher presstitutes deserve another Indira Gandhi.

This is a humiliation for Modi!

As usual he went begging, and thus now only proves what we knew along - India was indeed spying! Couple this with the humiliation bestowed upon India by the 5-Eyes - India is swiftly falling into the abyss.

State sanctioned assassinations and spying. Tsk tsk.

I will personally vote just for the fact that he has kept the most toxic media away from the PM office. Indian press is probably the most corrupt and toxic out there, even worse than the one is US. If he runs on the only mandate of never allowing Indian media to every come to PM office briefings, he has my vote.. i truly despise Indian media

Haha, India isn't the country that goes around begging though, unlike a certain someone

But not surprised though. This is the same guy who said "The Hundred" tournament will end IPL, put a stop to BCCI's hegemony and become the best league in the world but three years on...it's on the verge on getting scrapped. :)
