Second round of first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy promises absorbing action

Karachi, 30 October 2020:

The first round of the four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2020-21 produced quality cricket as both batsmen and bowlers made the most of the conditions on offer. Four centuries and four five-wicket hauls were recorded across the three matches.

The second round, which begins on Saturday, promises absorbing cricket with players back in red-ball rhythm. All eyes will be at the National Stadium, where Balochistan and Southern Punjab face-off after securing comprehensive wins in their tournament openers.

Shan Masood’s Southern Punjab will be high on confidence coming into the fixture, which will be broadcast live and relayed all over the globe through the PCB’s YouTube channel.

They were the only side to bag the maximum batting and bowling bonus points as they crossed the 400-run mark and dismissed the opposition under 200 inside 100 overs. Out of the four centuries scored, two were from Southern Punjab batsmen as their captain Shan Masood made 134 and Hussain Talat stroked his way to a maiden double-century with 253.

Shan will continue to rely on leg-spinner Zahid Mahmood, who spun his side to a commanding win by a margin of an innings and 96 runs inside three days. The 32-year-old Dadu-born returned match figures of 10-98.

Their opponents, Balochistan, led by Yasir Shah, who holds the record for being the fastest bowler to 200 Test wickets in terms of matches, enter the second round on the back of a comfortable 186-run win.

Similar to Southern Punjab, they collected the maximum bowling points on offer as the pair of pacer Khurram Shehzad (5-27) and the captain himself (4-94) bundled out Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for a paltry 167 in reply to their first innings 362, which had been made possible because of wicketkeeper-batsman Bismillah Khan’s third first-class century and Kashif Bhatti’s 126-ball 98.

Yasir finished the contest with eight wickets as he combined with Bhatti, the left-arm orthodox, to win the match for his side in the morning session of the final day.

After securing a thrilling victory over rivals Central Punjab on the verge of stumps on the final day, Sindh move to UBL Sports Complex to take on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who gained only two points and faced a defeat in the first round.

While it was the century and a five-wicket haul by veterans Fawad Alam and Tabish Khan which turned the match into Sindh’s favour, what augurs well for the Sarfaraz Ahmed-led team is the fact that youngsters such as Mohammad Asghar, Omair Bin Yousuf, Saud Shakeel and Hasan Mohsin made notable contributions in the second innings.

For Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who are led by Ashfaq Ahmed, their highest run-getter in the last four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, Sajid Khan shone with the ball, while batsmen Adil Amin and Kamran Ghulam put up a fight. They, however, will be hoping for more of their players to step up in their second round fixture.

The NBP Sports Complex will host Central Punjab and Northern fixture. Azhar Ali, the captain of Central Punjab, made a brave decision to put Sindh into bat with 50 overs left on the final day to chase 212 runs, which the Sarfaraz’s team surmounted with six wickets to spare.

Despite the defeat, there was, however, silver lining for the defending champions with Mohammad Saad scoring two half-centuries and Ahmed Shehzad marking his return to competitive cricket after an injury with a 155-ball 69.

Fast bowler Hasan Ali, also returning from an injury, bowled as many as 32.3 overs over the course of the four days and left-arm pacer Waqas Maqsood finished the contest with five wickets.

Northern captain Nauman Ali and head coach Mohammad Wasim must have used the two-day break to chalk down plans for the second round fixture after facing a thumping defeat.

Their notable performers in the opening match were captain himself, Nauman, who took four wickets, and all-rounder Hammad Azam, who showed resistance with a 117-ball 79 when Northern were following-on.

Northern are positioned at the bottom of the table with just two points – which they collected for taking Southern Punjab’s more than six wickets inside 100 overs in the first innings – Central Punjab, with three points (one batting and two bowling) are positioned at fourth.

Both Azhar and Nauman will be eager to bag 16 points for outright win to undo the errors of the previous outings.

Second round fixtures (31 Oct – 3 Nov), Karachi:

Balochistan v Southern Punjab – National Stadium
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa v Sindh – UBL Sports Complex
Central Punjab v Northern – NBP Sports Complex

If they are not going to play Haider Ali and Abdullah Shafique in ODI'S it's better to let them play First class.

Lack of talent is so evident seeing all the line ups.

Danish Aziz has impressed me but not in first XI

Chesti Mujahid is nice addition to Commentary Team.
He has so much vast experience and knowledge of the game.
According to him "Left Arm Chinaman" term has been replaced by ICC to "Left Arm Wrist Spin" as Chinese objected it.
Is it true?
He was saying it during the commentary.

Danish Aziz has impressed me but not in first XI

No standout fast bowler
No standout spinner

Only batsman to look forward to is Saud Shakeel, Hassan Mohsin, and Hussain Talat. Likes of Danish Aziz, and Muhammad Haris are languishing in the second 11

Extremely dire situation. No wonder we were struggling against Zimbabwe.

Farhat averages 42 in home tests similar to his FC average issue with Farhat was he never developed his game enough to handle overseas conditions would have succeeded in the UAE era had he played during that time.

Imran Butt looks good but can't make a judgement as pitch is a pancake and bowling mediocre

Wait what?

NSK is Pakistan best wicket for test cricket .It produced good result which has some thing for bowlers and if batsmen apply themselves they can score runs

This year first match of quaid trophy match was also very well balanced which had something for bowlers and batting was also not that difficult. In the end it produces result which is decent enough .

If bowlers(South punjab todays fast bowling lineup)are trash then they will even struggle on green wicket it has nothing to do with pitch

Ok lets see what happens in all the matches till the end...karachi produces 600 runs per innings for fun.

First match was decent due to grass and even then if azhar had t declared it would have been a draw for sure

Zahid does get that legbreak to turn. Wicketless so far though.

159 all out, yikes. Happy to see Ali Zaryab get some runs.

Saud Shakeel failing to make use of a good start and Fawad Alam continuing to feast while the international bowlers are away like he did last season.

Anyone know why Kamran Ghulam hasn't been bowling this year? From what I recall he was an allrounder.

Also, is this Dilbar Hussain's FC debut? Hasn't done anything so far but should be good for his development.

What are you talking about Fawad taking advantage of the bowling? Shinwari is still there as is Imran Khan sr. If anything if he’s scoring what does that make the other batsmen?

It makes the other batsman rubbish. Fawad is a quality batsman however he's past his best. He struggled last season before the squad for Australia left. I'm happy to see him scoring runs however I think we need to look elsewhere for the Test team.

It's criminal our two best prospects Haider Ali and Abdullah are missing out on this so they could bring drinks on the ground for Ifti chacha

2 tests for a person’s comeback is an insult. If Hafeez, Malik, Abid and Wahab can still play then why not Fawad?

That ifti makes me so mad, honestly lying every single day about his age.

They all deserve chances on the home ground along with Khushdil that to against a team like Zimbabwe.

Northern bowled out Central Punjab for a paltry 159 in 56.2 overs to collect maximum bowling bonus points on the opening day of the second round of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

After examining the conditions, Northern captain Nauman Ali’s decided to utilise the “no toss” rule, which paid dividends. The captain himself accounted for four opposition wickets for 55 runs and was supported by Raza Hasan, who returned three for 27, in the match being played at the National Bank Sports Complex.

Waqas Ahmed, right-arm pacer, induced early blows as he dismissed Ahmed Shehzad (seven) and Central Punjab captain Azhar Ali (eight).

Only three Central Punjab batsmen registered double-digit scores.

Ali Zaryab was the notable run-getter as he made 78 off 144 balls. The 21-year-old’s vigil included nine fours and a six. Seventeen-year-old Qasim Akram, who featured for Pakistan in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup earlier this year, made 25 off 79 batting at seven and Ahmed Safi Abdullah scored 11 off 17.

Northern collected six points – three for bowling out the opposition inside 100 overs and three for making that happen under the score of 200 – and they were only 43 runs behind Central Punjab when stumps were drawn as they had reached 116 for three in 33 overs.

The opening pair of Umair Masood (36) and Zeeshan Malik (15) added 42 runs together before a blip which saw Northern slip to 66 for three as their second and third wickets fell without the addition of any score.

Central Punjab’s Hasan Ali took two wickets for 36.

Umar Amin and Asif Ali, who were not out on 26 and 34, respectively, will resume the proceedings for Northern on Sunday.

The highlight of the first day of the match between the two table-toppers – Southern Punjab (28 points) and Balochistan (25 points) – at the National Stadium was Imran Farhat’s 38th first-class century.

After Shan Masood, the Southern Punjab captain, opted against the toss and decide to bowl first, the 38-year-old stitched a 200-run stand with Imran Butt, who fell eight runs short of entering into triple digits.

Imran Farhat faced 138 balls of which 15 were dispatched for fours before he was forced to walk back to the hut after being retired hurt.

In the broadcast match, which is being produced by the Pakistan Cricket Board, the two Imrans had come together on the second ball as Sami Aslam was trapped in front by Mohammad Ilyas, who dismissed Kashif Bhatti (19) later in the evening session to finish the day with two for 48.

Imran Butt’s 138-ball 92 included 10 fours. He was dismissed by Zahid Mehmood, who was the other bowler to finish the day with two scalps.

Before the bad light stopped play, Balochistan had made 297 for six in 81.3 overs. As such, both sides added two points to their tally with Balochistan gaining the points for crossing the 250-run mark and Southern Punjab for dismissing opposition’s six batsmen.

Taimur Ali unbeaten on 41 and Yasir Shah (four not out) will resume Balochistan’s innings.

Half-centuries by Fawad Alam and captain Sarfaraz Ahmed had Sindh batting at 245 for six against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the close of play at UBL Sports Complex.

The pair stitched a crucial 119-run partnership for the fifth wicket which ended with Fawad getting run out nine runs short of what would have been his 36th first-class century. The left-handed batsman smashed eight fours in his 177-ball stay at the crease as he recorded 91.

His captain Sarfaraz was unbeaten on 68. The wicketkeeper-batsman had faced 81 balls to date from which five were dispatched to boundary.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Sajid Khan, who recorded a five-for in his side’s opening match, picked up two wickets, while the other three wickets were equally shared between Imran Khan Snr, Usman Khan Shinwari and Khalid Usman.

Sarfaraz Ahmed and Sohail (seven not out) will resume the innings for Sindh tomorrow morning and will be looking to score at a brisk rate for the next 10 overs so they can bag the maximum batting bonus points.

By Saturday, they had pocketed only one point, while Khyber Pakthunkhwa had added two bowling bonus points to their tally.

Scores in brief:

At National Bank Sports Complex, Northern elected to bowl (toss uncontested):

Central Punjab 159 all out, 56.2 overs (Ali Zaryab 78, Qasim Akram 25; Nauman Ali 4-55, Raza Hasan 3-37, Waqas Ahmed 2-35)

Northern 116-3, 33 overs (Umair Maqsood 36, Asif Ali 34 not out, Umar Amin 26 not out; Hasan Ali 2-36)

Points to date: Central Punjab 1, Northern 6

At National Stadium, Southern Punjab elected to bowl (toss uncontested):

Balochistan 297-6, 81.3 overs (Imran Farhat 100 retired hurt, Imran Butt 92, Taimur Ali 41 not out; Mohammad Ilyas 2-48, Zahid Mehmood 2-86)

Points to date: Balochistan 2, Southern Punjab 2

At UBL Sports Complex, Sindh won the toss and chose to bat:

Sindh 245-6, 90 overs (Fawad Alam 91, Sarfaraz Ahmed 68 not out, Saud Shakeel 38, Asad Shafiq 26; Sajid Khan 2-85)

Points to date: Sindh 1, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 2

Imran Farhat, Exciting young talent, one for the future, glad he is still playing FC cricket at the expense of some young batsman.

dont understand the hate for farhat, theres nothing to gain from giving young players places for free and if the bowlers cant get someone of the calibre of imran farhat out than they clearly arent ready to play for pak.

no one is giving him runs for free, hes got 15000 runs at 40 odd because he knows how to bat in Pakistan, and there arent any young batsmen in the baloch 2nd xi banging on the door for his spot.

with 1000 runs in the new format qae at 50+, hes not international quality but he deserves his first class spot.

Imran Farhat, Exciting young talent, one for the future, glad he is still playing FC cricket at the expense of some young batsman.

I think its ok. You should have some experienced players in your domestic cricket especially if they are performing.

You can't fill all the six teams with youngsters. If they are capable enough, they should perform in second xi and make a place in first xi.

Imran Farhat, Exciting young talent, one for the future, glad he is still playing FC cricket at the expense of some young batsman.

The whole domestic scene can't be an under 25s league. You need the younger players already involved to learn from bowling to and batting against seasoned vets. For e.g. a Dilber Hussain has been talked about as a potential future pick in t20s. Today he went wicketless in 16 overs, for a few runs, including bowling to Farhat. The experience, whilst difficult, would have been educational for him, and he'll be better for it

Imran Farhat is retiring at the end of this season anyway.

Our only hope for Pakistan is Abdullah S and Haider Ali to become worldclass batsman otherwise we will be forever bottom ranked team :))

Last generation of Pak cricketers turned out to be pretty ordinary due to one reason or another which naturally left a big gap and thus young players like Haider and Abdullah had to be promoted early and with high hopes as well. Babar and Shaheen have been carrying on the big load from almost pretty much the start or initial stages of their careers because even they didnt have much support.

Umer Akmal, Moh Amir, Ahmed Shehzad, Junaid Khan, Hammad Azam etc all of them didnt respond or were able to carry on as expected and the way generally the case with the case cream of any generation.

Northern continued to dominate Central Punjab in their second round fixture of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, being played at the National Bank Sports Complex, and took their bonus points’ tally to 10 after adding four batting points on Sunday.

The title defenders were 64 for two in their second innings at the close of play with a 131-run trail to surmount. Their captain Azhar Ali was not out on 24 and he will be joined by Usman Salahuddin (seven not out) when the play resumes on Monday.

Resuming the day at 116 for three, Northern posted an imposing 354 all out in 100 overs thanks to half-centuries from Umar Amin, Asif Ali and Hammad Azam.

Umar and Asif were instrumental in helping Northern reach a comfortable position as they added 96 runs – 46 of which came on the second day’s play – for the fourth wicket partnership.

After resuming his innings on 26, Umar missed out on the century by six runs as he was dismissed by Ahmed Safi Abdullah, the star performer with the ball for Central Punjab with five for 106. Umar struck 11 fours and a six in his 181-ball stay at the crease.

Asif, Umar’s overnight partner, recorded his career’s fourth first-class half-century with a 90-ball 65. The 29-year-old struck nine fours and a six.

Following the contributions from Umar and Asif, Northern’s position was further consolidated with a 56 from all-rounder Hammad Azam. The 29-year-old’s 24th first-class half-century was studded with three sixes and four fours.

Ahmed Shehzad scored 27 when Central Punjab came out to bat for the second time in the match. The right-handed opener was dismissed by Northern captain Nauman Ali, who picked up four wickets on day one of the match. Ali Zaryab (0) fell to Athar Mehmood.

Sindh captain Sarfaraz Ahmed recorded his 12th first-class century with an unbeaten 131 against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the UBL Sports Complex. The wicketkeeper-batsman dispatched eight off the 232 balls he faced towards the boundary after resuming the day at 68 to put his team in a commanding position.

Sindh had begun the proceedings at 245-6 and added 23 more runs, at the loss of a wicket, by 100 overs. As such, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa both pocketed two bonus points for batting and bowling respectively. They were 361 all out from 127.5 overs.
Khalid Usman’s slow-left arm orthodox accounted for two more scalps on Sunday as he finished the innings with three for 108.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were 136 for four in 50 overs before close of play as opener Israrullah anchored their reply for the most part of the day.

The 30-year-old Peshawar-born stroked his way to his 26th half-century in the format. His 124-ball 67 included a crucial 63-run second wicket partnership with his captain Ashfaq Ahmed (18) after Sahibzada Farhan (three) was removed by Tabish Khan with only seven runs on the board.

Israrullah fell to Sohail Khan, while the other two wickets were taken by off-spinner Ashiq Ali. Sindh added one more bonus points – by the virtue of dismissing three or more batsmen inside 100 overs.

With six wickets in hand, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have a 225-run trail to surmount when the third day’s play begins on Monday.

In the broadcast match being played at the National Stadium, Southern Punjab were 245 for five in 67 overs when stumps were drawn in reply of Balochistan’s 372 all out.

Southern Punjab were provided a solid start as their captain Shan Masood followed-up on his century at the National Bank Sports Complex with a 73-ball 62, which included seven fours.

Shan stitched an 80-run stand for the second wicket with Hussain Talat, who scored 39 off 52 before he was trapped in front by Balochistan captain Yasir Shah.

The leg-spinner dismissed Saif Badar (17) and wicketkeeper-batsman Umar Siddiq (47) which at one stage had Southern Punjab wobbling at 157 for four.

With an unbeaten 52 off 92 balls, Salman Ali Agha led the fightback and he will resume the innings along with Imran Rafiq, who is not out on 20.

The pair has added 52 runs for the unfinished sixth wicket together and the Southern Punjab fans will be pinning their hopes on them to stretch their partnership into triple digits.

Balochistan to date have pocketed one bowling point, which takes their tally of first innings bonus points to five.

Earlier in the day, Balochistan added 60 runs for the loss in three wickets in 18.3 overs after resuming the day at 297-6 to bag four bonus points for batting.
