Fifth round of first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy begins tomorrow

• PCB to play its role for the eradication of violence against women by joining the White Ribbon campaign

Karachi, 25 November 2020:

The first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy continues to produce enthralling red-ball action as the up and coming players, who received promotions in the First XI sides after 34 top players left for New Zealand to represent Pakistan and Pakistan Shaheens, lived up to the expectations and made a mark in the fourth round matches.

The competition now enters the fifth round from Thursday, which provides further opportunity to the domestic cricketers to make an impression.

As part of its corporate social responsibility, the Pakistan Cricket Board will play its part for the eradication of violence against women by joining the White Ribbon campaign. As such, players, support staff, officials and commentators will don white ribbons on the opening day of the fifth round contest at the National Stadium.

Southern Punjab continue to lead the points table after they put up a strong fight against Sindh to secure a draw at the National Stadium thanks to a brilliant rearguard effort led by Saif Badar.

Southern Punjab gained nine points from the contest and will be eager to continue their domination in the six-team tournament as they gear up for the first Punjab Derby of the season, to be staged at the UBL Sports Complex.

Central Punjab, who will be facing Southern Punjab, are the only side without any win this season. The title defenders are languishing at the bottom of the points table with three losses in four matches.

Their pace-bowling stocks will be reinvigorated with the return of Hasan Ali. Central Punjab have made two more changes as they have promoted Muhammad Akhlaq and Zubair Khan from the Second XI. Ehsan Adil and Rizwan Hussain make way for them.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa jumped two places to the third spot after securing as many as 23 points, following an outstanding win against Central Punjab. Their victory was staged on the back of a valiant 92 not out by Khalid Usman, in the first innings, and spinner Sajid Khan’s 10-fer.

Northern and Balochistan, ranked second and fourth, played out a thrilling draw. There was silver lining for the both sides as Balochistan’s Azeem Ghumman, promoted from the Second XI, registered two nineties and Umar Amin stroked a second innings century which helped Northern jump back on the final day to secure a draw.

The fifth round will run from 26-29 November.

Southern Punjab v Central Punjab at UBL Sports Complex:

The two Punjab sides, at the opposite ends of the points table, will face off for the first time in the 2020-21 edition of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

While Umar Siddiq-led Southern Punjab will be looking to further consolidate their position at the top of the points table, Central Punjab will hope that this fixture brings the much-desired change in their fortunes.

Central Punjab’s batting department has failed to live up to the expectations. Their highest run-getter this season has been Azhar Ali, who is currently positioned ninth in the list of the batsmen with most runs with 269 runs in six innings and is in New Zealand with the men’s national team.

Their next best batsman has been Mohammad Saad, who with three half-centuries in eight innings has scored 265 runs at an average of just over 33. Usman Salahuddin is the team’s third highest scorer with 231 runs at 28.88 runs per dismissal.

Their bowling charts are led by 22-year-old left-arm orthodox Ahmed Safi Abdullah (18 wickets at 18.17) and pacer Waqas Maqsood (14 wickets at 24.50). The fact that Central Punjab’s all five points from their last match were bowling bonus points provides a boost to their bowling unit, which is further strengthened with the return of Hasan Ali.

Southern Punjab’s bowling unit has been spearheaded by 32-year-old Dadu-born Zahid Mehmood who has 25 scalps – including a five-wicket haul – at 20.80 runs per wicket. Zahid is currently third highest-wicket taker in the tournament, a place ahead of Ahmed Safi.

Salman Ali Agha and opener Zain Abbas were amongst the run-getters for Southern Punjab in their fourth round fixture as the two batsmen scored valiant half-centuries besides the fourth innings defiance showed by Saif. Their captain Umar Siddiq will be hoping that the pair display same grit, when they take the field against Central Punjab.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa v Northern at National Stadium:

Following a remarkable five-wicket win over Central Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa travel to National Stadium to play Northern, who are positioned second on the points table.

The fixture serves a great opportunity to the exciting cricketers in both teams to showcase their talent to cricket fans in Pakistan and all over the world as the contest will be broadcast on PTV Sports in the country and beamed across the globe through PCB’s YouTube channel.

Sajid Khan, who paved the way for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s five-wicket win over Central Punjab in the last round, tops the bowling charts with 32 wickets at an average of 21.09. The 27-year-old off-spinner has three five-wicket hauls from four matches. Northern will be wary of him.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s batsmen have also raised their hands when it has mattered the most with Adil Amin scoring the third of his three half-centuries in the previous fixture and captain Khalid Usman contributing a brilliant 92 not out in the first innings following a batting collapse.

Adil is currently the sixth highest run-getter in the tournament with 323 runs.

Musadiq Ahmed has been the other notable performer since his promotion from the Second XI side after the third round. The right-handed batsman has scored 173 runs, which includes a half-century, at an average of 43.25.

Northern’s all-rounder Hammad Azam has been in-form with the bat as he has smashed a century and four half-centuries in the seven innings he has batted. He averages a staggering 68.33 and has accumulated 410 runs. He is the second best batsman, in terms of runs, in the tournament to date.

Umar Amin, his teammate, is positioned two places beneath him with 340 runs. He scored a century in his most recent outing with the bat to save his side from a certain defeat after they were 62 for four with a 223-run partnership with Mohammad Nawaz, who made 95.The duo laid the foundations of a thrilling finish as the match ended with Northern mere eight runs away from the target.

While their captain Nauman Ali will be hoping for the same returns with the bat from the three experienced cricketers, the slow-left arm will be eager to leapfrog Sajid as the highest wicket-taker as the two have a difference of only three wickets between them.

Both bowlers have three five-wicket hauls.

Balochistan v Sindh at State Bank Stadium:

Balochistan and Sindh will face off at the State Bank Stadium. This will be the first, first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2020-21 fixture at the venue.

Sindh’s batting department received a massive boost as three of their batsmen – captain Asad Shafiq, Omair Bin Yousuf and Sharjeel Khan – recorded centuries, while Saud Shakeel stroked an impressive 70 not out in their last match.

That Asad and Sharjeel, who scored a first-class century after a gap of almost seven years, are back in form augurs well for Sindh as it not only promises heaps of runs in the coming rounds, but also takes the pressure from the youngsters, allowing them to express themselves freely.

Tabish Khan continues to spearhead Sindh’s bowling attack. The right-arm pacer has 14 wickets from four matches, which includes a five-fer. The young duo of pacer Shahnawaz Dahani and spinner Abrar Ahmed would be aiming to make most of another opportunity after impressing in the match against Southern Punjab.

For Balochistan, slow-left arm Kashif Bhatti has been at the forefront of their bowling attack. The 34-year-old has taken 16 wickets at an average of 31.

He has also been equally instrumental with the bat as he has smacked three half-centuries and scored 241 runs at an average of over 40.

Taimur Ali has been the other notable run-getter with 250 runs at an average of 50.

NO!!! Such a boring game.

Would rather SP vs CP was stramed.

Both of them have had multiple matches streamed while Northern and Peshawar are the only teams that haven't had even one match televised, so it is only fair. Not to mention I always look forward to watching Northern play due to their positive brand of cricket. Northern is anything but boring.

Northern have won the toss elected to bat first in their game against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Unbelievable selection by Central Punjab. You would think that after repeated failures they would bring in new players, yet Akhlaq is brought into 1st eleven only to be benched. What does CP hope to achieve with this team?

Which batsman would you drop for Akhlaq? Saad Nasim is the only one that actually deserves to be dropped I feel, otherwise the other selections merit their places.

ahmed shahzad has failed in 7 out of 8 innings this season . May be it was the time to rest him and play someone else.

M. Nawaz seems to be reinvigorated under Mohammad Wasim's coaching. Just cover drove Imran Khan on the up. That demonstrates some confidence.

I know many on here want M.Wasim to be the next PCT coach. I'd rather that the earliest he joined was post the T20 world cup, as I'd love to see him work more with youngsters and develop his own coaching

M. Nawaz seems to be reinvigorated under Mohammad Wasim's coaching. Just cover drove Imran Khan on the up. That demonstrates some confidence.

True. Extracting the best out of players which Wasim has shown is a really important skill I think which can make a huge difference at top level. The reason quite a few times see Pak players restricted, unlike themselves in international cricket in my opinion comes down to mindset and approach as well. Not only the mindset and approach impacts the current performance of any player but also how well and in what direction he/she develops.

Top coaches around the world were able to positively change that for their respective sides whether we look at NZ’s possibly best era or Eng’s white ball resurgence.

Northern's bench strength is the strongest and team plays so fearlessly. Need 2-3 clones MD Waseem. The guy was a fighter.

Sameen gul has fallen of the radar forget the national team even his state side coaching staff is unwilling to play him.

wasim has promoted more talent in a season and a bit of being northern coach than many of the pcb's expert coaches and academy staff have in ten.

Mohammad Nawaz and Faizan Riaz scored brilliant centuries for Northern on the opening day of their team’s fifth round contest against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the National Stadium on Thursday.

Northern sat at a comfortable 371 for five at the close of play thanks to a solid 219-run alliance for the fourth wicket between the two.

Nawaz crunched 15 fours and two sixes as he scored 121 from 146. His century followed two half-centuries in as many innings as the all-rounder was dismissed on 67 and 95 in his side’s fourth round fixture against Balochistan, which ended in a draw.

He joined Faizan, who was unbeaten on 124, after Lunch when Northern were 102 for three.

Faizan, the 32-year-old right-handed batsman, smashed 16 fours and a six on way to his 10th century at this level. The Islamabad-born has faced 162 balls to date and will be joined by Asif Ali when play resumes on Friday.

Earlier, opener Nasir Nawaz provided a solid platform to Northern after his captain Nauman Ali elected to bat. Nasir made a 72-ball 68, which included 11 fours and three sixes, and knitted a 90-run opening stand with Sarmad Bhatti, who was dismissed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa captain Khalid Usman on 24.

The players, support staff match officials and broadcasters, along with the PCB officials, donned white ribbons to play their part for the eradication of violence against women as part of the White Ribbon campaign.

Off-spinner Sajid Khan, the leading wicket-taker in the ongoing season, accounted for two Northern batsmen – Nasir and Umar Amin. Arshad Iqbal and Zohaib Khan took a wicket each.

By the virtue of crossing the 350-run barrier inside the 100 overs, Northern, to date, have gathered four points, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who entered this contest after a five-wicket win over Central Punjab, have gained one point.

Akbar-ur-Rehman’s scintillating 155 not out lifted Balochistan to 333 for three in 87 overs after Sindh captain Asad Shafiq elected to bowl at the State Bank Stadium.

After coming into bat at 88 for two, Akbar smashed 12 fours and four sixes from the 194 balls he had faced until the stumps were drawn.

He was joined by Ayaz Tasawar, who was unbeaten on 67. Ayaz had dispatched seven of the 153 balls towards the boundary.

Sindh’s Shahnawaz Dhani and Abrar Ahmed were amongst the wicket-takers as they picked up a wicket each, while Ali Waqas, who scored 46, was run out.

At the UBL Sports Complex, Southern Punjab were 272 for five in 88.2 overs against Central Punjab after Zain Abbas, Umar Siddiq and Salman Ali Agha scored half-centuries.

Zain Abbas, who made 95 and 42 in the previous round after earning a promotion from the Second XI team, stitched an 88-run stand for the second wicket with his captain Umar after Southern Punjab lost their first wicket on 25.

Zain scored 69 from 118 balls, studded with 11 fours and a six.

Umar, the wicketkeeper-batsman, missed out on what would have been his 13th first-class century as he was dismissed by pacer Waqas Maqsood on 94.

Umar struck 11 fours over the course of his 232-ball stay at the crease.

Salman was unbeaten on 62 at the close of play and he will be joined by Muhammad Imran (three not out) when the play resumes tomorrow morning. Salman has struck eight fours and a six from the 93 balls he has faced to date. This is his third half-century of the season.

Central Punjab’s pacer Waqas and spinner Ahmed Safi Abdullah dismissed two batsmen each.

None of them are performing and the ones that have made a 50 or two have done so in the most impactless fashion Imaginable.

Bilal Asif is a bowling all rounder, while Muhammad Saad and Ahmed Shahzad have both had decent innings while failing to convert starts. At a certain point, coaches need to coach too rather than just throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.

I agree about Saad Nasim, should definitely be dropped for Akhlaq.

Sorry but Bilals batting is Null. Shazad cant be coached anything anymore and Saad is pathetic. Takes up way too many balls for soft 30s and 40s. The team can do better without these players. Why should CP stick with these players when their 2nd XI is winning with some very good players?

seen a bit of him, good movement, decent pace, puts in effort to hit the pitch rather than float it, bowls a hit me ball every over tho, and seems to naturally bowl wide off of stump.

if he can improve his control he can be a good bowler.

Northern’s Munir Riaz recorded a five-wicket haul on debut on day two of his side’s fifth round first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fixture against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the National Stadium on Friday.

The 19-year-old right-arm pacer took five wickets for 91 runs as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were 249 for seven and 211 runs behind Northern at the close of play.

The former Pakistan U19 bowler rolled over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s top and middle-order as he accounted for Musadiq Ahmed (19), Israrullah (19), Adil Amin (11), Zohaib Khan (0) and Sajid Khan (18).

The only notable resistance came from Kamran Ghulam and captain Khalid Usman, as both scored half-centuries.

Kamran, the 25-year-old right-handed batsman, registered his ninth half-century with the team’s top score of 67, which included nine fours. This was his third half-century in the ongoing season.

Khalid, fresh from an unbeaten 92 not out, which played a crucial role in his team’s resurgence and an eventual victory in their last round match against Central Punjab, smashed 10 fours and a six in his 59 not out off 82 balls.

Earlier, Northern added 89 runs for the loss of four wickets at a run rate of just a shade below six an over to their overnight score to post a daunting 460 for nine declared and pocketed all five bonus points on batting on offer.

Faizan Riaz, who scored his first century of the season yesterday, added 22 runs to his overnight total before Asif Ali smashed an unbeaten 45-ball 52, studded with four fours and two sixes.

Faizan was dismissed on 146 by pacer Arshad Iqbal, who returned three for 75. Faizan, the 32-year-old right-handed batsman, crunched 18 fours and a six.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa pocketed three bonus points for bowling as they had dismissed eight Northern batsmen by the completion of the 100 overs.

Centuries by Salman Ali Agha and Muhammad Imran lifted Southern Punjab to an imposing 527 for seven in 134 overs in the ongoing Punjab Derby at the UBL Sports Complex. Southern Punjab resumed the day’s play at 272 for five.

Salman and Imran resumed their innings on 62 and three, respectively, and went on to stitch 187-run stand for the sixth wicket which further pushed the Central Punjab bowlers on the backfoot.

Their alliance was ended with the run out of Salman, who went back to the hut after accumulating 169 runs from 183 balls. The 27-year-old smashed 21 fours and three sixes.

Imran, on the other hand, returned unbeaten on 100 as he recorded his maiden ton in first-class cricket. The 23-year-old faced 143 balls, 11 of which were dispatched to boundary.

Central Punjab skipper Hasan Ali was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets for 79. Waqas Maqsood and Ahmed Safi Abdullah also dismissed two batsmen each.

After the completion of the 100 overs, the scorecard read 358 for five. As such, the batting team gained four bonus points. Central Punjab got only one bonus point for bowling.

Central Punjab were 136 for two in 41 overs when stumps were drawn thanks to Ali Zaryab’s second first-class half-century. The 21-year-old opener struck eight fours and a six in his 111-ball 67 and knitted a 92-run opening stand with Ahmed Shehzad, who scored 33.

Central Punjab have a hefty 391-run trail to surmount. Usman Salahuddin and Mohammad Saad will resume the proceedings for them at 18 and nine.

Balochistan’s Ayaz Tasawar converted his overnight score of 67 into his career’s third century with a brilliant 138 not out as Balochistan posted 458 for nine declared in 115.5 overs against Sindh at the State Bank Stadium.

The 29-year-old left-handed batsman smashed 13 fours and two sixes as he scored an unbeaten 138 off 244 balls.

He stitched a 192-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Akbar-ur-Rehman, who could add only nine runs to his overnight score before he was dismissed on 164 by pacer Shahnawaz Dhani, who with four for 79 in 21 overs was the pick of the bowlers for Sindh.

Young leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed took three wickets for 123 runs.

Balochistan fell three runs short of accumulating all five batting points as they managed 397 for six in 100 overs. For dismissing six batsmen, Sindh got two points.

Solid half-centuries by Omair Bin Yousuf and Saud Shakeel highlighted Sindh’s reply. They were 175 for one in 51 overs at the close of the day’s play.

Omair, who had scored a remarkable 153 against Southern Punjab at the National Stadium in the fourth round, was unbeaten on 74 which included seven fours and two sixes.

I’m absolutely delighted for Saud Shakeel: but it’s absolutely criminal that Fawad Alam is touring in his place.

Blessing in disguise. Saud dodges a very tough tour and can hopefully start at home vs SA once Fawad inevitably fails in NZ.

Should surely have been part of the Shaheens though, that’s something I firmly believe. It wasn’t that tough a tour if we was restricted to Pakistan A, and I’m confident he would probably have come good against NZA.

But I do believe all things happen for a good reason. Who knows, maybe the media attention and massive knocks he’s generating, while becoming undisputed leader in the QEA Trophy run scorers chart, helps his narrative even more than if he had been on the Shaheens tour.

So maybe not that great for his development (missing out on valuable SENA 4-day experience), but great for his career.

Rather dull round of matches this time, pitches seem to have flattened out.

Good for batsmen to gain confidence though.

The fifth round first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fixture between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Northern entered a thrilling phase as the former were set a 390-run target on day three at the National Stadium on Saturday.

Northern’s Umair Masood recorded his maiden century in first-class cricket with a brilliant 103 not out which helped his team post 247 for four at a healthy rate of five runs per over.

The 22-year-old right-handed batsman smashed nine boundaries and stitched a 142-run stand for the third wicket with Faizan Riaz, who followed his 146 in the first innings with a 70-ball 56.

Umair faced 126 balls in his undefeated stay before his captain Nauman Ali declared the innings in the evening session.

In the fourth innings of the match, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa openers Israrullah and Musadiq Ahmed raced to 55 in nine overs before the stumps were drawn.

When they resume the final day’s play on Sunday, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will need 335 to win with all of their 10 wickets in hand.

Earlier, Khalid Usman, their captain, scored his maiden century after Khyber Pakhtunkhwa resumed their first innings at 249 for seven.

The 34-year-old crunched 16 fours and four sixes in his unbeaten 113 off 158 balls before Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were bowled out for 318 in 76.2 overs.

For bowling out the opposition inside 100 overs, Northern, who had gathered all bonus points on offer for batting yesterday, added three more to their account, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa gained three points for crossing the 300-run mark.

Half-centuries by Usman Salahuddin and Saad Nasim helped Central Punjab bring down their first innings deficit of 391 at the start of the day’s play to 126 by the close of it against Southern Punjab at the UBL Sports Complex.

Usman Salahuddin and Saad Nasim stitched a 124-run partnership, which played a crucial role in helping Central Punjab avoid the follow-on following the dismissal of Mohammad Saad (nine).

Usman top-scored for his side with 76, which included eight boundaries.

Saad scored 69 before he was dismissed by Salman Ali Agha, who followed his 169 with the bat with three for 41 in 19 overs. Saad smashed 10 boundaries in his 131-ball stay at the crease.

This was Usman’s 45th half-century and Saad’s 28th in the format.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Ali Shan was the other notable run-getter on the day with 44.

Title defenders Central Punjab, who are placed at the bottom of the six-team points table, pocketed three bonus points for batting as they were 309 for five at the completion of 100 overs. Southern Punjab could add only one bonus bowling point from the match.

Southern Punjab pacer Bilawal Bhatti added two more wickets – Bilawal Iqbal (16) and Ahmed Safi Abdullah (two) – to his tally after he bowled Ahmed Shehzad (33) yesterday.

Central Punjab’s last wicket partnership between captain Hasan Ali (22 not out) and Waqas Maqsood (13 not out) was intact when stumps were drawn.

They will resume the last day’s play on 401 for nine.

Omair Bin Yousuf and Saud Shakeel converted their overnight half-centuries into remarkable hundreds against Balochistan as Sindh made 407 all-out at the State Bank Stadium.

Omair, who entered this contest after scoring 153 against Southern Punjab, made 109 off 240 in an innings studded with 11 fours and three sixes. This was 21-yaer-old’s fifth century at this level.

Jalat Khan, who recorded his fifth five-wicket haul with five for 85, dismissed Omair. The 34-year-old Sibi-born’s other four scalps were Asad Shafiq (two), Tabish Khan (six), Mir Hamza (19) and Shahnawaz Dhani (seven).

Omair stretched his overnight partnership with Saud Shakeel, who scored his second century of the season, to 207.

Saud, the left-handed batsman, smoked 15 fours and a six as he gathered 142 runs. The 25-year-old was dismissed on his 233rd ball by pacer Taj Wali, who finished with two for 86.

Saad Ali stroked his career’s 23rd half-century with a 93-ball 56, which included three fours and a six, before Mohammad Talha (two for 64) accounted for him.

Sindh gathered four bonus points for batting, while Balochistan gained two bonus points for bowling as the scorecard read 350 for six when 100 overs were completed.

Balochistan were 93 runs ahead Sindh as their openers had added 42 runs in 12 overs by the close of play. Azeem Ghumman (24 not out) and Bismillah Khan (14 not out) will resume the proceedings tomorrow morning.

At this stage, what is the inside verdict from teams, players, organizers - how is the new structure working out?

Is it achieving what it set out to do?

Agha Salman is the best bet for an off spinning all-rounder option with Qasim Akram behind him in pecking order. Only thing which bothers me is his weakness against short ball and bouncers when I last saw him in Lahore Qalandars team. I didn't see any improvement on it in that respect as I saw in last televised match of SP Vs Balochistan where he got out to Taj Wali's bouncer. He seems like a compulsive puller who cannot resist playing despite not in a best of positions to play it. He had to improve on it.

Other than that he is million times better than Ifti who is in the squad only because of Misbah's fetish for older players..
