Quaid-e-Azam Trophy to commence from 26 October

• Complete schedule of the premier tournament will be announced in due course

Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, Pakistan’s premier first-class tournament, will begin from 26 October. Eighteen teams from the 16 regions will participate in the four-day tournament that will conclude on 19 December.

The 18 teams include Abbottabad Region, AJK Region, Bahawalpur Region, Dera Murad Jamali Region, Faisalabad Region, FATA Region, Hyderabad Region, Islamabad Region, Karachi Region Blues, Karachi Region Whites, Lahore Region Whites, Lahore Region Blues, Larkana Region, Multan Region, Peshawar Region, Quetta Region, Rawalpindi Region and Sialkot Region.

Karachi Region Whites will defend the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy title this year after the Sarfaraz Ahmed-led side defeated Faisalabad Region in the final by 456 runs at the Gaddafi Stadium from 22 to 26 October 2023.

Abdullah Khurram Niazi, Director - Domestic Cricket Operations:

“Quaid-e-Azam Trophy is the pinnacle of domestic cricket in Pakistan as it is not just a tournament but also an event that showcases the immense talent across the country and prepares them for the challenges of international cricket.

“As always, we will continue to provide the best possible platform for players to excel and show their capabilities on the biggest stage in domestic cricket as they will be rubbing their shoulders with the best players of the country.

“Earlier we demonstrated a successful Champions One-Day Cup, and are fully committed to strengthening our domestic structure. The successful execution of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy remains at the heart of this commitment.”

It's rare I get upset over Pakistan cricket as you gradually become desensitised to the negligence and ineptitude. However this is criminal even by PCB standards and makes you wonder why bother hoping things will ever improve.

1) QEA Trophy was due to start October 20th. Only today was the schedule released. The explanation is they were waiting for the Chairman's signoff. If you think that's the Chairman's right, okay, but that it's taken this long suggests he's holding one job (or four) too many.

2) It's bizarre the QEA Trophy starts midway through our home international season, with a 50 over comp serving as prep for a Test series against England. The likes of Sajid, Noman and Zahid played the Multan Test with almost a year's gap since their last FC game.

3) The format changes again. We've gone from 6 teams (2022) to 8 teams (2023) to 18 teams (2024).

Why is every PCB Chairman so egotistical and thin skinned to think they must totally revamp everything to show who's boss instead of looking to build on their predecessor's work ? Why not leave a system in place for at least 3-4 years then assess the results ?

Abdullah Niazi in his statement describes the QEA Trophy as 'the pinnacle of domestic cricket in Pakistan' yet they treat it like some Sunday League tournament. Then we ask why our cricket has sunk so low.

Where are the squads for each team ? Who is playing where ? Will it be 2 groups of 9 with a final ? Single league or double league format ? Any info on broadcasting ?

Abdullah Niazi please resign if you have any shame.

The traitors of the nation have been causing his ministry a lot of headaches. He had to deal with national security first. Exterminate terrorism from within and then worry about cricket.
Which traitors? Are you talking about the criminals that ripped up the constitution, or are you talking about the traitors that stole the election with less than 17 seats. Let's hear more about the traitors

M. Haris, Azam Khan, Khawaja Nafay etc need to be playing all the games for them to improve

If they don't play, then they'll remain hopeless

It wouldn't surprise me if they haven't even selected the squads yet and forget broadcasting we'll be lucky to have updated scorecards until the next day.

18 teams are good , more players will get chances to perform and the crop of the cream get to play pentangular FC tournament and eventually get selected in national team.

18 teams is insanity. The quality of cricket will be heavily diluted. Every tom, dick and harry shouldn't be getting a chance. This is FC cricket, not club cricket. Every season its the same old drama; new format, new structure, new teams. How is anything supposed to progress if everything is in a constant state of flux? As always there will be a number of teams that will be very weak because all the big players will be playing for bigger regional associations.

There is nothing about this that makes any sense. Having a 50-over domestic tournament in the middle of a home test season, and now this. It's madness. They keep doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results. How many times in the past have we seen this same format of 15-16 teams, and atleast half of those teams were rubbish because they are filled with nobodies? I think there was one tournament some years ago that had 26 teams!

For the last few years there was some semblance of normalcy with 6 teams and then last year 8 teams. Now its back to old times.

18 teams are good , more players will get chances to perform and the crop of the cream get to play pentangular FC tournament and eventually get selected in national team.
Why not expand to 100 teams? This would create even more opportunities for players. After all, the PCB's primary goal is to provide employment and "chances", not cricket.

Technically, 12 teams in 2022 if we include the 2nd XI tournament.

Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2024-25: Karachi Region Whites to begin title defence against Peshawar Region

Karachi Region Whites, defending champions of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, will begin this year’s campaign against Peshawar Region on 26 October at the Ashfaq Ground in Charsadda. The premier first-class tournament will see 18 teams from 16 regions divided into three groups. The top side from each group will advance to the triangular stage.

In the triangular stage, the first-placed team from each group will play two matches, with the top two sides qualifying for the final, set to take place from 14 to 18 December. The venues of the triangular stage and the final will be confirmed in due course.

A prize pot of PKR12.6 million will be up for grabs as the winner of the tournament will bag PKR7.5 million while the runners-up will collect PKR four million.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi:

“I am pleased to announce that the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy has been formally approved. This tournament holds immense importance in the structure of Pakistan’s domestic cricket and its continuation ensures the cultivation of talent for our national team.

“The tournament will provide young and emerging players the opportunity to showcase their skills and stake a claim to represent in the Men’s international team. The expansion of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy from eight to 18 teams this year increases the talent pool and allows more regions to participate at the highest level.

“I have personally instructed all concerned officials to ensure that the arrangements for this tournament are of the highest standard. The PCB is committed to providing the best environment for players to perform at their best and for the tournament to run smoothly and professionally.”

As per the tournament’s format, six cities – Abbottabad, Charsadda, Gujranwala, Islamabad, Lahore and Rawalpindi – will host 45 group matches. Islamabad’s three venues Diamond Ground, Marghazar Ground and National Ground will stage the Group A matches.

Abbottabad Cricket Stadium, Ashfaq Ground in Charsadda and Rawalpindi’s Shoaib Akhtar Cricket Stadium will host Group B matches. Gujranwala’s Jinnah Cricket Stadium, Saeed Sports City in Lahore and Rana Naveed Academy in Sheikhupura will be hosting Group C fixtures.

Among the 18 teams, Abbottabad Region, Faisalabad Region, Hyderabad Region, Islamabad Region, Lahore Region Whites and Larkana Region are placed in Group A. AJK Region, Bahawalpur Region, Karachi Region Whites, Multan Region, Peshawar Region and Rawalpindi Region are part of Group B, while Dera Murad Jamali, FATA Region, Karachi Region Blues, Lahore Region Blues, Quetta Region and Sialkot Region are in Group C.

Each side will get an opportunity to play a minimum of five matches in the group stage, with the top team from each group progressing to the triangular stage.

They might as well make 3 teams each for Karachi and Lahore itself instead of 2 as there's always issues who has the most talent even then it won't be enough.

Mohammad Sheharyar fined for code of conduct breach

Bahawalpur Region’s Mohammad Sheharyar has been fined 35 per cent of his match-fee for breaching the PCB Code of Conduct for Players and Players Support Personnel during his side’s match against Azad Jammu and Kashmir Region in the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2024-25 at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium.

Sheharyar was found to have violated Article 2.8 of the PCB Code of Conduct, which reads as: “Showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during a Match”.

The incident happened when Sheharyar delayed his departure from the crease and gestured in frustration after being given caught behind, which was deemed as a disagreement over the decision by the on-field umpire.

Sheharyar was reported by on-field umpires Saqib Khan and Farooq Ali Khan at the end of second day’s play. Sheharyar accepted the charge and the sanction handed out by match referee Nadeem Arshad hence there was no need of a formal hearing.

Shadab bowling 42 overs today he should have been doing this 5 years back but I guess better late then never.
Absolutely. He needs to bowl 100s of overs and take the risk of sorting out the release. His release, as I pointed out a few times comes from underneath the hand and not from the side.

Young Shadab I thought had a pretty good ceiling not sure he can achieve his full potential but hopefully he can go back to serviceable levels he was pre 2022. A performing Shadab is pretty utility guy.

Absolute bakwaas masquerading as a FC match ! Leave the awful scores for a moment and the match ending ending in 3 days:

8 of the 22 players made their FC debuts in this game. In the Quetta team, only Bangalzai averages above 40 in the batting order.

The Karachi Blues top six have 16 FC matches combined. This is how you know you've too many FC teams.

We barely have enough for 6 decent teams and here we have more than 2 dozen. This should be the precursor to the strength playing strength.

Third Class tournament.

It can't be that bad if the French Royalty is playing in it.

If you guys actually bothered to look at the videos posted by PCB channel on YouTube then you will be glad to know that these unknown players are pretty good standard and the overall standard of the tournament is definitely not crap , lot’s of good young pacers and batters who can play fast scoring shot and not intimidated by extra pace and spin.

Muhammad Salman is a good strong built bowler and when he runs in the dust on his feet really get pumped up in the air and he bowls with decent pace on hard lengths , reminds of Umar Gul and he can seam the ball both ways , not sure if it's because of the pitch or not. Pace looks ok too between 130-138K. Not sure how old is he.

The young talent on display during Quaid Trophy is truly amazing for once. You don't need to watch these videos twice to ascertain that new players are actually talented.

All of these are 120k trundlers
Well that was 10 years ago when we had trundlers like Azizullah, Majid Ali ,Samiullah , Irfan Ullah , Asad Ali dominating the domestic circuit, you can clearly see the current lot much much quicker than them they are more in between 130-138k instead of early to mid 120ks like previous generation.
