Pakistan Cup and Hanif Mohammad Cup 2023-24 Discussion

Possibly due to an injury. Collided with overweight Sarfraz in last match and left the field.
Karachi whites are struggling here big time. 41/3 now. Sarfraz is playing but shan is not...was that collision that serious that shan is not playing but Sarfraz is?

This match shows how the upcoming stars would have fared had they been included in the world cup squad. Karachi Whites have both the highest (364/7) and lowest (103/10) total of this competition.

Peshawer Region has won the Pakistan Cup 2023-24 after they defeated the Karachi Whites in the Final.

Disappointed with the Karachi boys, lost to a pretty mediocre Peshawar team.

Oh well, Saifi bhai must now put his focus to the Australia tour and PSL

Has saifi bhai ever scored a fifty in SENA? Honestly I’d fear for his life in Perth Melbourne etc

Peshawar clinched their third one-day cup title after defeating Karachi Whites at Pindi Cricket Stadium by five wickets in the AH Group Presents TransGroup Pakistan Cup 2023-24 final. Nabi Gul hit the winning runs for Peshawar as the Sahibzada Farhan-led side pocketed a cash prize of PKR 5 million.

Peshawar’s last national one-day title win came in the 2016-17 season when they beat the same opponent at National Bank Stadium, Karachi in the final by 124 runs.

Karachi Whites began their innings patiently after being put in to bat first by Peshawar on a surface that seemed to assist the fast bowlers. The first blow arrived in the eighth over with Habibullah dismissed by left-arm pacer Mohammad Imran.

Saim Ayub, who starred with 95 in the semi-final triumph for Karachi Whites, was the second batter to exit the stage when Imran struck again to have him caught by Azam Khan. Wickets continued to tumble as none of the top five batters could register a score above 13.

Karachi Whites skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed was dismissed courtesy a sharp catch by Iftikhar Ahmed for just 22 off 25 balls. Azam Khan was the last man out for 30 off 46 deliveries as Karachi merely scrambled to 103 all out in 31.2 overs. Imran was the chief destroyer with four wickets for 28 runs while Mohammad Abbas Afridi got three wickets.

Peshawar did not face serious hiccups in their chase of the paltry target getting home with five wickets and 27.4 overs to spare. Mohammad Haris top-scored with a quick-fire 46 from 33 balls featuring seven fours and a six.

Sahibzada was out in bizarre fashion as he inadvertently whipped the bails off with his bat resulting in a hit wicket off Ghulam Mudassar. The other four wickets to fall were taken by Noman Ali (two wickets), Danish Aziz and Saim (one each).

Multan’s Haseebullah took home the player of the tournament and best wicket-keeper awards for his tally of 326 runs including two centuries and 10 dismissals. Saim topped the batting chatting charts with 397 runs in eight innings and was duly named best batter of the tournament. Multan leg-spinner Zahid Mehmood and Peshawar fast bowler Abbas Afridi were the joint winners for the best bowler award with 15 wickets each. For his impactful figures of 4-28, Mohammad Imran was declared player of the final.

Scores in brief:

Peshawar beat Karachi Whites by five wickets

Karachi Whites 103 all out, 31.2 overs (Azam Khan 30, Sarfaraz Ahmed 22; Mohammad Imran 4-28, Mohammad Abbas Afridi 3-20)

Peshawar 108-5, 17.2 overs (Mohammad Haris 46; Noman Ali 2-19)

Player of the tournament – Haseebullah (Multan Region) (326 runs and 10 dismissals)

Best Batter – Saim Ayub (Karachi Region Whites) (397 runs)

Best Bowler – Zahid Mehmood (Multan Region) and Mohammad Abbas Afridi (Peshawar Region) (15 wickets each)

Best Wicket-keeper – Haseebullah (Multan Region) (326 runs and 10 dismissals)

Player of the final – Mohammad Imran (Peshawar Region)

Rizwan Mehmood is the one to look out for. Went a bit under the radar during the last under 19 World Cup due to the fact that the management favoured Irfan Niazi over him. Came from the same batch of Qasim Akram and Haider Ali. He seems to have a very good game against spin, from what I’ve heard. Seems well built too.
Which team is he playing for???

They are mediocre themselves bar Saim ayub and omair. The likes of danish,Azam etc are bang average at best led by specialist captain is sarfraz.

Karachi is basically Saim or nothing. Also, I am trying to find out why Saud Shakil did not play the tournament after coming back from the World Cup? I see Iftikhar and Haris coming straight into the 11 but no Saud. I suppose that was the major difference between the two sides. The dedication within the seniors to be there and do well for their region.
Anyway, onto the t20 cup.

If you wanted to know what is the basis of problems in Pak cricket, the following encapsulates it all.

Sohail Khan is preferred to Dahani or Mir Hamza in the Pakistan Cup. Ali Shafique was one of the top wicket takers in QEA trophy but only played a couple of games in Pak Cup. Petty politics plague Pak cricket at each level. There is no merit, no planning. Why did Abrar not play since returning from his WC vacation? If Ifti and Haris could play, he could too.

Peshawar defeated Karachi Whites by five wickets to be crowned champions of the Pakistan Cup 2023-24. Sahibzada Farhan-led Peshawar bowled out Sarfaraz Ahmed-captained Karachi Whites for 103 and subsequently chased the target in 17.2 overs to win the final held at Pindi Cricket Stadium on 19 November 2023.

Before this, Peshawar last won their national List A title in the 2016-2017 season. This is Peshawar’s third List A title and overall the sixth national one-day cup title for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the most by any region.

Peshawar’s dominant run to the final:

Peshawar cruised to the final on the back of five wins from seven matches. They only lost one match – against FATA by eight wickets – during the league stage of the tournament, while their match against Lahore Whites was abandoned without a ball bowled. During the round-robin stage, the side defeated Karachi Whites by seven wickets, Rawalpindi by a run, Multan by four wickets, Lahore Blues by six wickets and Faisalabad by 68 runs (DLS). Consequently, Peshawar topped the points table finishing at 11 points.

Karachi Whites and Multan, with nine points each, were second and third on the table and FATA, with eight points, ended the round-robin stage on the fourth spot. Rawalpindi, despite equaling FATA’s tally of eight points, lost out on a semi-final spot owing to inferior NRR.

Peshawar defeated FATA by 44 runs in the semi-final and obliterated Karachi Whites in the final to take home the coveted trophy. Peshawar dismissed Karachi Whites for 103, which is the lowest first-innings total for any List A final in Pakistan. The target was chased with five wickets in hand and 166 balls remaining.

For me, the find of this tournament has to be Haseebullah and Saim Ayub. Saim Ayub's consistency in recent games has earned him a maiden call for the Australian Tour.

amount of 50's vs 100's, 50 and out is a long root problem in Pakistani cricket. we need to move away from this mindset
