Rawalpindi, 13 November 2023: The seventh round of Pakistan Cup 2023-24, played at four venues across Rawalpindi, AJK and Abbottabad, saw wins for Karachi Whites, Multan, FATA and Faisalabad. Despite losing their game against FATA today, Peshawar, with 11 points, topped the table and have thus qualified for the semi-finals of the Pakistan Cup along with Karachi Whites, Multan and FATA. Rawalpindi, despite equaling FATA’s 8 points, failed to qualify owing to their inferior NRR.

The first semi-final will be played between Peshawar and FATA on 16 November while the second semi-final will be held between Karachi Whites and Multan on 17 November. The tournament final will be played on 19 November. All three games will be played at the Pindi Cricket Stadium.

Faisalabad v Lahore Whites at Pindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi

Faisalabad posted 293-8 in 45 overs after choosing to bat first against Lahore Whites at Pindi Cricket Stadium. Mohammad Faizan (70, 63b, 8x4s, 3x6s) and Muhammad Irfan Khan (70, 68b, 6x4s, 2x6s) were the prominent run-getters for the side. Shehzad Akhtar (36, 58b, 5x4s) and Mohammad Saleem (35, 33b, 2x4s, 1x6) also chipped in with crucial runs.

Right-arm pacer Aamer Jamal took three wickets and Lahore Whites skipper Saad Naseem returned with two wickets.

Lahore Whites had an abysmal start to the chase, with Abid Ali and Umar Akmal dismissed for ducks and Mohammad Akhlaq getting out for just one run. Syed Zain-ul-Hasnain (10, 23b, 1x4) was caught behind soon after. Tayyab Tahir (46, 52b, 7x4s) and Saad (41, 44b, 4x4s, 2x6s) stitched together a valiant partnership of 75 runs, however, their efforts remained insufficient as the side was dismissed for 191 in 43.4 overs. Fighting knocks by Ahmed Daniyal (38, 42b, 1x4, 2x6s) and Fahad Munir (27, 72b, 1x4) went in vain.

Khurram Shahzad bagged his second consecutive four-fer. Ali Asfand and Abubakar Khan accounted for two wickets each.

Multan v Rawalpindi at Shoaib Akhtar Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi

Rawalpindi got to 242-9 in the allotted 45 overs after being put into bat first by Multan at Shoaib Akhtar Cricket Stadium. Haider Ali hit an unbeaten half-century (78 not out, 70b, 2x4s, 5x6s) and was the top performer with the bat for his team. Opening batter Abdul Faseeh added a run-a-ball 68 (8x4s, 1x6) to the total. His fellow opener Rehman Khan chipped in with 33 from 42, including four boundaries and a six.

Leg-spinner Zahid Mehmood bagged three wickets. Right-arm pacer Mohammad Imran and Multan captain Sharoon Siraj got two wickets apiece.

Sharjeel Khan’s century (106, 84b, 10x4s, 7x6s) helped Multan turn the chase completely in their favor. Sharoon (63 not out, 68b, 3x4s, 2x6s) also hit an unbeaten half-century to help the side get over the line in 43.2 overs with three wickets to spare.

All Rawalpindi bowlers returned with wickets; Kashif Ali and Farhan Shafiq, with two wickets each, were most successful of the lot.

FATA v Peshawar at Abbottabad Cricket Stadium, Abbottabad

FATA banked on their decision to field first and bowled out Peshawar for 112 in 33 overs at Abbottabad Cricket Stadium. Left-arm pacer Usman Khan Shinwari registered the fourth five-wicket haul of his List A career, giving only 14 runs in return. Right-arm fast bowler Irfanullah Shah and left-arm spinner Asif Afridi claimed two wickets each.

Niaz Khan (40, 54b, 4x4s, 1x6), who was the ninth batter in, produced a fighting knock for Peshawar. The second-best score of the innings came from Sajid Khan’s bat, hitting 29 from 32, including three fours and a six.

On the back of a half-century by Samiullah Jnr (64, 74b, 8x4s, 1x6), FATA cruised to the target of 113 in 25.3 overs, losing only two wickets in the process. Salman Khan Jnr (32 not out, 69b, 2x4s) was the other contributor with the bat.

Karachi Whites v Lahore Blues at Mirpur Cricket Stadium, AJK

In the rain-delayed match, Lahore Blues scored 197-9 in the stipulated 40 overs, after being asked to bat first by Karachi Whites at Mirpur Cricket Stadium. Hussain Talat hit a half-century (51, 60b, 2x2s, 2x6s) after the top four failed to get going. Cameos by Kashif Bhatti (35 not out, 22b, 4x4s, 2x6s) and Hunain Shah (24, 23b, 3x6s) took the side to a fighting total.

Left-arm spinner Danish Aziz, and fast bowlers Mir Hamza and Sohail Khan claimed two wickets each.

Although Shan Masood fell one short of his century but his fiery knock of 99 off 68 balls featuring 11 fours and two sixes ensured that Karachi Whites reach the target with ease. They scored 201-4 in 28.4 overs, winning the game comprehensively. Danish (32 not out, 52b, 2x4s, 1x6) was the second-highest scorer for the side.

What has disappointed me so far is that I haven't spotted any young, quality spinners in the Pak Cup yet. The highest wicket takers in terms of spinners are:

1. Zahid Mahmood (35 yrs)
14 wickets
avg 15
eco:4.1

2. Khushdil Shah (28)
12 wickets
avg 19
Eco:4.2

3. Asif Afridi (36)
9 wickets
avg 19
eco:4.8

4. Danish Aziz (28)
9 wickets
avg 20
eco:4.4

But they are all on the older side. Has anyone spotted young spinner with potential?

I cannot find Arafat minhas and Sufyan Muqeen anywhere in this cup. Faisal Akram?
Where are these guys? playing in U19 championship?

Kashif Ali looks like a good bowler should be the left field pick for Aus tour may end up be a surprise package.

Zahid Mehmood doing well this tournament. To late for him to be brought into the team however he's just another example of a player who was treated unfairly because of where he was from

I have followed Faisals progress.. He has played all but two games for Multans matches and is in semis so should see him against a very good karachi side on 16th. he did well in few games but hasnt been among the wickets i actually believe we need to invest in him and muqeem for definately white ball if not tests

He has a 37 average in FC. It's surprising a mediocre spinner like him has even lasted so long in domestics.

Hyderabad’s 19-year-old batter Rizwan Mehmood ended the tournament leading the run charts. In seven matches, he scored 361 runs including two centuries and a half-century. Bahawalpur’s Mohammad Wasim, with 256 runs in four games, was behind Rizwan in second place. Hyderabad’s off-spinner Daniyal Hussain Rajput was the leading wicket-taker of the tournament. He returned with 17 scalps in seven matches, including a five-wicket haul and a four-wicket haul. His teammate, leg-spinner Jawad Ali with 16 wickets, was second on the list. Islamabad’s Rohail Nazir and Abbottabad’s Khayam Khan were the joint-most successful wicketkeepers, registering 13 dismissals each from seven games. Hyderabad’s Akbar Khan had 11 dismissals.

Islamabad captain Rohail Nazir was the top run-getter for the side, hitting an unbeaten 38 from 22, including two boundaries and three maximums. Opener Syed Khizar Shah (18, 15b, 2x4s) also chipped in at the top, setting the tone for the chase.

Off-spinner Naveed Malik and right-arm pacer Faizan Saleem were the only two wicket-takers for AJK, returning a wicket each.

Earlier, Islamabad bowled out AJK for just 99 in 28.5 overs. Usman Maroof, who hit 24 from 40 including a six, was the highest scorer for the side. Basit Ali’s 17 from 23, including a four, was the second-best score of the innings.

However, a frequent loss of wickets in the middle derailed their chase. A valiant unbeaten half-century by Khalid Usman (73 not out, 55b, 7x4s, 2x6s) went in vain as the side fell 15 runs short of the target. Khayam Khan (39, 49b, 3x4s, 1x6) was the other contributor in the lower-order.

Not sure what Tahir Hussain pace is but he looks intriguing. Might be around 135k's, has gotten the ball to swing both ways and is pretty tall. Has had a few close chances to get a wicket but a bit unlucky. His run up and action seems a bit like Mohammad Irfan which I don't love but seems intriguing nonetheless. Not many noticeable young bowlers to talk about in this domestic season though.

Saim Ayub 36 runs off 24 balls in the early going. Putting away all the bad balls for boundaries and unlike rest of Pakistan team, he actually goes for aerial shots during the powerplay.

They were 200 for 2 but lost the plot somewhere after Saim Ayub and Habibullah's wicket.

Brilliant innings from Saim Ayub and a great cameo from Sarfraz.

Karachi should easily defend this total and considering the other finalist is Peshawar, back to back trophies for Sarfraz looks to be extremely likely

Multan Region is already struggling against Karachi whites as they are chasing a target of 281 posted by them.

It’s a one day

Do Pakistan have plans for Sarfaraz to keep instead of Rizwan? If they did, he would have been in the reserves and not Harris.

You can’t complain about him not keeping when he will be 40 at the next World Cup

We should be more focused on his belly. He really needs to lose some calories. Not looking good enough to pass the fitness criteria

The pool of talent is excellent in Pakistan. I have noticed it during Quaid e Azam Trophy and this Pakistan Cup.

Pointless when selections are based on PSL alone. Hope the new selection committee and captain take note unlike the previous regime

Danish Aziz managed to make 33 off 42 before being sent back in the 41st over. Sarfaraz Ahmed amassed 28 off 27 deliveries and lost his wicket to Tahir Hussain while Anwar Ali managed 22 off 14 before being bowled by Mohammad Sadaqat.

Scores in Brief:

Karachi Whites beat Multan by 43 runs (DLS)

Karachi Whites 280 all out in 44.3 overs (Saim Ayub 95, Shan Masood 41, Habibullah 40; Mohammad Imran 3-58, Mohammad Sadaqat 2-45, Faisal Akram 2-52)

Multan 229-9 in 41 overs (Haseebullah 106 not out, Sohaib Maqsood 32; Sohail Khan 4-44, Ghulam Mudassar 2-31)

Just watched the highligts. Saim and Haseebullah outscoring the senior players. If you compare the two innings of the yougsters, I was more impressed by Haseebullah's innings. He gave the opppsition no chances and you could hear that he hits the ball extremely hard. Saim played beautifully also, but his style of batting always keeps the fileding side interested, a few half-chances could have yielded a wicket.

Haseebullah, at only 20, he has 7 List A centuries. That is quite impressive.

Not much coverage/interest in these performers - real pity

Rizwan Mehmood is the one to look out for. Went a bit under the radar during the last under 19 World Cup due to the fact that the management favoured Irfan Niazi over him. Came from the same batch of Qasim Akram and Haider Ali. He seems to have a very good game against spin, from what I’ve heard. Seems well built too.

What was his sr in this tournament?

But his selection depends on him getting picked by a PSL franchise. So fingers crossed.
Let’s see what he does in the T20 national cup. We will get an idea of what he’s all about

They probably won’t broadcast it 🤡
It’s usually available to watch on the PCB YouTube channel. I’m sure they will, or they should. It’s an important tournament, the prelude to PSL…and then hopefully the Pakistan squad for T20i World Cup

They will probably broadcast the super 8 stage of the tournament. But the national one day cup is ending on 19th and the t20 (16 team event) starts from 20th. The 16 team event in which Hyderabad will take part will be held in Karachi. I don’t how PCB will move their camera crew and the whole setup within a day’s time.

The final of the Pakistan Cup will be played tomorrow between Peshawar and Karachi. It should make for a fiery contest. Some notable players from each side:

Peshawar: Sahibzada Farhan, Mohammad Haris, Iftikhar Ahmed, Abbas Afridi, Mohammad Ilyas

Karachi: Saim Ayub, Shan Masood, Asad Shafiq, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Azam Khan, Noman Ali, Sohail Khan

One of the most interesting matchups will be Abbas Afridi vs Saim Ayub. Two potential starts for Pakistan.

I think both need to put some muscle.

Even if he does perform in psl ans national cup very unlikely he will be picked for pakistan yet.

Karachi Whites captain Sarfaraz Ahmed speaks ahead of the Final of the Pakistan Cup 2023-24 against Peshawar:

"MashaAllah, the preparations are excellent. Throughout the tournament, the team has played well, and all the boys have fulfilled their roles admirably. InshaAllah, I believe we will perform well as a team in the final.

The mindset is that every team participating in this tournament targets reaching the final and winning it. We, too, will strive because Allah has guided our team to the final, and we aim to win by playing good cricket.

The Peshawar team has performed well throughout the tournament, and we also faced each other in the league match. They have a very strong team with excellent balance. As mentioned before, the two best teams are competing in the final of the Pakistan Cup. I hope people will witness a display of good cricket, and the team that plays well will emerge victorious."

Peshawar captain Sahibzada Farhan speaks ahead of the Final of the Pakistan Cup 2023-24 against Karachi Whites.

"Obviously, everyone is preparing well. Especially, we also got a rest of 2 days in between this. MashaAllah, all boys have done their training and also did gym. And today, we did a practice session. MashaAllah, preparations are well. If you see, we have young lads. Means now Ifti bhai and Haris have come, now two senior boys have come. The rest of us are young, and the new talented boys who performed in grade 2, they are playing. So because of this, our trust is in our boys. And InshaAllah, we will win this Final.

Both teams are good. InshaAllah, whichever team will perform well, InshaAllah victory will belong to that team."

Peshawar and Karachi Whites set their eyes on Pakistan Cup 2023-24 title

Peshawar and Karachi Whites will face off in the final of the Pakistan Cup 2023-24, to be played on 19 November at Pindi Stadium in Rawalpindi. The toss will take place at 0900 PKT and the first ball will be bowled at 0930 PKT. The game will be broadcast on PTV Network and live-streamed on ARY ZAP for Pakistan audiences while it will be streamed on PCB’s YouTube channel in overseas territories.

Ahead of the semi-finals, Peshawar reigned supreme at the standings table with 11 points while Karachi Whites and Multan, both with 9 points each, were second and third respectively owing to difference in NRR. FATA with 8 points was the fourth team on the table.

Sahibzada Farhan-led Peshawar secured a berth in the final after they defeated FATA by 44 runs in the first semi-final, on the back of half-centuries by the skipper and Adil Amin. The latter is also the leading run-scorer for the team, getting 279 in seven innings, including four fifties. Abbas Afridi, 23-year-old pacer, has bagged 12 wickets in six matches and is the most successful bowler for his side.

Karachi Whites defeated Multan by 43 runs (DLS) in the second semi-final to join Peshawar in the final. Saim Ayub, the 21-year-old left-handed opening batter, has scored the most runs in the tournament. He has amassed 386 runs in seven innings, including a century and a half-century. His fellow left-handed opener Shan Masood, with 372 from seven innings, is just behind Saim. The 34-year-old also has a century and a half-century.

Experienced pacer Sohail Khan is Karachi Whites’ highest wicket-taker with 10 wickets in six matches. He bowled a triple wicket maiden at a crucial juncture during Karachi Whites’ semi-final victory over Multan. Left-arm spinner Danish Aziz is squarely behind, accounting for nine in seven matches.

Sarfaraz Ahmed, captain of Karachi Whites, while speaking to PCB Digital said: “Our team has played some good cricket in the tournament. All the boys have fulfilled their roles. I am really hopeful that we will continue that and perform well in the final.

“Peshawar is a really good team and have a balanced side. The two top teams of the Pakistan Cup are competing in the final so I think the competition will be fierce and people will get to watch some good cricket. May the best team win.”

Peshawar captain Sahibzada Farhan said: “We had two days of rest before the final so the boys have been training well and we have had a practice session too so we are well-prepared. We have a lot of young boys in the team and now that senior players like Iftikhar Ahmed have joined, our team is well-balanced.

“We trust our boys and back ourselves to do well in the final. Both the teams playing the final are good teams, whoever does better on the day will win.”

While I love Saim Ayub, I’d like to see a hundred from Habibullah. It would mean so much more to see another talented player graduating from under 19 cricket into the senior side.

We should be more focused on his belly. He really needs to lose some calories. Not looking good enough to pass the fitness criteria
Yep can't look like this and ask to be selected. Sorry. We need to maintain fitness standards. As it is, our fitness levels have dropped.

The final is scheduled the same day as WC final. Does PCB do this nonsense on purpose or something to make sure as few people watch it as possible. I guess if no one is playing attention to their ridiculous squads and selections, they can avoid criticism as a result.

Just a really poor tournament from start to finish. Very few matches to begin with + 45 overs + poor broadcast + poor pitches + poor squads. Disappointing stuff as usual from PCB.

Watching the final live.
saim ayub has departed after playing a terrible knock

Pakistan Cup 2023-24 final

Toss:

Peshawar won the toss and decided to field first against Karachi Whites.

Saim Ayub departs early for just 11 runs. Could not do much today in the all-important Final clash.

Pakistan cup final >>> World Cup final

We would not be seeing extra ordinary talent like Shan Masood and Sarfraz Ahmed in the World Cup Final

Really enjoying the Pakistan Cup final and eternally grateful that I am alive to witness the talent that is Shan Masood and Sarfraz Ahmed

After 13 overs, Karachi Whites have scored 38 runs for the loss of 3 wickets as Asad Shafiq has departed as well.

I don't exactly know the reason for Shan Masood's absence from today's match. Why is he not playing in the final?
