What's new

Queen Elizabeth II, the UK’s monarch for the past 70 years, has died aged 96

Depressing that both the Governor General of Australia and Prime Minister of New Zealand have confirmed they they were informed of HM’s death two hours before the official announcement, and only 45 minutes after the public announcement that the Queen was to be placed under more intensive medical supervision.

Privacy is fine, but pointless dishonesty helps no one.

What was the precise timeline ?

Why not just tell the truth?

I’ve checked, Jacinda Ardern was woken at 0450 NZ time and informed of HM’s death.

That is 5: 50 pm British Summer Time.

Even the UK PM didn’t find out until 16:30 BST, presumably the Queen died between 12:00 and 15:00, don’t see the issue here.

I don’t want to derail this thread any further so I will just pay my respects and keep private my limited concerns.

There is no issue. The process in which the death of the Queen is announced is outlined in operation London Bridge.

-------------

On the death of the Queen, her private secretary would be the first official (i.e., not one of her relatives or part of a medical team) to convey the news. Their first act would be to contact the prime minister, where civil servants would convey the code phrase "London Bridge is down" to the prime minister using secure telephone lines.[1] The cabinet secretary and the Privy Council Office would also be informed by the private secretary.[3] The cabinet secretary would then convey the news to ministers and senior civil servants. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's Global Response Centre, based at a secret location in London, would communicate the news to the governments of the 14 other countries of which Elizabeth is queen (the Commonwealth realms), and to the governments of the other countries of the Commonwealth of Nations.[1] Government websites and social media accounts, as well as the royal family's website, would turn black, and the publication of non-urgent content must be avoided.[3]

The media would be informed by announcement to PA Media and the BBC through the Radio Alert Transmission System (RATS) and to commercial radio on the Independent Radio News through a network of blue "obit lights" which would alert presenters to play "inoffensive music" and prepare for a news flash, while BBC Two would suspend scheduled programming and switch to BBC One's broadcast of the announcement.[12] BBC News would air a pre-recorded sequence of portraits, during which the presenters on duty at the time would prepare for the formal announcement by putting on dark clothing prepared for this purpose. The Guardian has reported that The Times has 11 days of prepared coverage ready and that ITN and Sky News have long rehearsed her death, substituting the name "Mrs Robinson" for the Queen's.[1]

<b>Bank holiday approved for day of Queen's funeral</b>

A bank holiday across the UK has been approved by King Charles III for the day of the funeral of his mother Queen Elizabeth II.

The new king confirmed the order at a ceremony in London proclaiming him as monarch.

The date of the Queen's state funeral has not yet been announced.

The Queen, Britain's longest ever reigning monarch, died peacefully on Thursday afternoon at her Scottish estate in Balmoral.

The state funeral of the Queen is expected to take place in less than two weeks at Westminster Abbey, with the exact date yet to be confirmed by Buckingham Palace.

There has not been a monarch's funeral service in the Abbey since the 18th Century, although the funeral of the Queen's mother was held there in 2002.

Westminster Abbey is the historic church where Britain's kings and queens are crowned, including the Queen's coronation in 1953, and where she married Prince Philip in 1947.

Heads of state from across the world will be invited to join members of the Royal Family to remember the life and service of the Queen.

Senior UK politicians and former prime ministers are also expected to attend the service, which will be televised.

The upcoming bank holiday is one of several ways in which life in the UK is temporarily being put on hold following the Queen's death.

A period of national mourning will last until the day of the state funeral, the government has announced.

There is no obligation for organisers to cancel planned events, but many that were due to happen in the immediate aftermath of the Queen's death have already been cancelled or postponed for a few days.

Football matches in the Premier League, English Football League or in Scotland or Northern Ireland have been postponed until Tuesday, while all games in the Women's Super League, Women's Championship and Women's FA Cup have also been put on hold.

A number of horse racing, golf, and boxing fixtures have also been called off.

Large-scale strike actions planned for next week were immediately cancelled following the Queen's death, and the Trades Union Congress said it was postponing its annual conference in Brighton this weekend out of respect.

On the day of the state funeral, government guidance suggests organisers of sporting fixtures or pre-planned events may wish to adjust timings to avoid clashing with the service or processions.

Some shops and businesses may also close on the day of the funeral, with Harrods already announcing that it planned to do so.

RIP the Queen

<b>Queen to lie in state for four full days before state funeral</b>

The Queen will lie in state for four days before her funeral at Westminster Abbey on Monday, 19 September.

The public will be allowed to view the coffin during that time.

Before this, the Queen will be at rest in St Giles Cathedral Edinburgh, for 24 hours from Monday 12 September, with people able to pay their respects.

Her family, politicians and world leaders will attend her state funeral at 11:00 BST. It will be a Bank Holiday.

The Queen's final journey will begin on Sunday, with her oak coffin being carried by her Balmoral gamekeepers - her own staff bringing her to a hearse that will take her to Edinburgh.

It will drive slowly to the Palace of Holyrood House for 16:00 BST.

On Monday afternoon, it will process to St Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh, with members of the Royal Family. There will be a service and the coffin will rest here for 24 hours, for people to pay their respects.

The following day, Princess Anne will accompany her mother's body as it is flown back to London.

The Queen's coffin will be taken from Edinburgh Airport to Buckingham Palace via RAF Northolt.

On Wednesday afternoon, it will be taken to Westminster Hall, arriving at 15:00 BST. Four clear days of lying in state will happen from Thursday, before the funeral.

Monday 19th's state funeral will be followed by a procession from London to Windsor Castle. The Queen will be laid to rest at King George VI Memorial Chapel at Windsor.

Her journey, beginning in simplicity, will end with the sombre grandeur of the first state funeral that many people will have seen - the last being Sir Winston Churchill in 1965.

Ahead of the funeral the new King will visit Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. Prime Minister Liz Truss will accompany him.

A period of national mourning will last until the day of the state funeral, the government has announced.

The Royal Family will observe a further period of mourning for seven days afterwards.

Westminster Abbey is the historic church where Britain's kings and queens are crowned - but there has not been a monarch's funeral service there since the 18th Century.

Funerals for the Queen's father, grandfather and great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, in the 1900s, were all held at St George's Chapel, Windsor.

Heads of state from across the world will be invited to join members of the Royal Family to remember the life and service of the Queen.

Senior UK politicians and current and former prime ministers are also expected at the televised service.

There is no obligation for organisers to cancel planned events on the day of the funeral but government guidance suggests organisers of sporting fixtures or pre-planned events may wish to adjust timings to avoid clashing with the service or processions.

Some events in the immediate aftermath of the Queen's death were cancelled or postponed.

Large-scale strike actions planned for next week were immediately cancelled, and the Trades Union Congress said it was postponing its annual conference in Brighton.

The King confirmed earlier on Saturday that the day of the funeral would be a bank holiday, when he was proclaimed as monarch at St James's Palace, London

In his speech, he praised the Queen's "unequalled reign".

The King became the monarch after the death of his mother, but the meeting of the privy council of politicians, officials and clergy formally confirmed it.

The packed room, including all of the six living former British prime ministers, repeated the phrase.

The proclamation was then read out on a balcony above Friary Court in St James's Palace.

Clerk of the Privy Council Richard Tilbrook proclaimed Charles "King, head of the Commonwealth, defender of the faith", before declaring "God Save the King".

On Saturday evening, the King's car stopped on its way down the Mall and he and Camilla, the Queen Consort, got out to greet some of the thousands of well-wishers who lined the road down from Buckingham Palace.

There were joyful shouts of "God Save the King", as he and his wife accepted bunches of flowers and handshakes.

Sorry to be a killjoy but I couldn't care less that she is dead. Her crimes and that off her family were/are so brutal that any person with an ounce of history will have no sympathy for the so called Royal family. She lived a long life thanks to what has been looted from other lands from the creation of Israel to crimes in Africa and the subcontinent the list is too long.

Now she like everyone else will be answerable to Allah from all her crimes and sins. The only thing i mourned was there being no Football this week:abbas2!. I am glad there has been no special coverage over her death in the subcontinent neither have their Cricketers worn black armbands. This could be the beginning of the end of the British monarchy too.

Naturally the British and western media will never tell us about her crimes and the billions of people around the world who if anything are celebrating her death.

<b>Thousands line streets as Queen Elizabeth's coffin leaves her home</b>

BALMORAL, Scotland, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Queen Elizabeth's coffin began a six-hour journey from her summer home in the Scottish Highlands to Edinburgh on Sunday as thousands lined the route in tribute to the late monarch, many in sombre silence, some applauding and others in tears.

Shortly after 10 a.m. (0900 GMT), a hearse carrying Elizabeth's oak coffin emerged from the gates of Balmoral Castle, where she died on Thursday aged 96, to drive slowly towards the Scottish capital.

The coffin was draped in the Royal Standard of Scotland with a wreath on top made up of flowers taken from the Balmoral estate including sweet peas, one of Elizabeth's favourites.

In an emotional tribute to his mother on Friday, the new monarch King Charles said she had begun a "last great journey" to join her husband of 73 years Prince Philip, who died last year.

The cortege from Balmoral is the first of a series of events leading up to the state funeral at Westminster Abbey in London on Sept. 19.

Her death has drawn tears, sadness and warm tributes, not just from the queen's own close family and many in Britain, but also from around the globe - reflecting her presence on the world stage for seven decades.

As the hearse reached the small village of Ballater near Balmoral, hundreds stood beside the road in silence in bright morning sunshine as the hearse passed, some throwing flowers into the road.

"It's like a family member, it overwhelms - the sadness - that she's not going to be with us," said Elizabeth Alexander, 69, who was born on the day the queen was crowned in 1953.

"We've travelled quite a while today to come here but felt it was really important to come and pay respects as she passed through Ballater," a tearful Nicola Gibson told Reuters. "I suppose like everybody else, just lots of emotions."

Accompanied by the queen's daughter, Princess Anne, the cortege will wind from the remote castle through picturesque countryside, villages and small towns to Edinburgh where the coffin will be taken to the throne room of the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Tens of thousands have already gathered at royal palaces in the days since Elizabeth's death to leave flowers and to pay their respects.

"I know how deeply you, the entire nation - and I think I may say the whole world - sympathise with me in the irreparable loss we have all suffered," Charles said at a ceremony on Saturday.

The queen came to the throne following the death of her father King George VI on Feb. 6, 1952, when she was just 25. Her coronation took place a year later.

Charles became king immediately after his mother's death and was officially proclaimed the new monarch at the ceremony, full of pageant and centuries-old traditions.

Similar proclamations are following across the United Kingdom and the other 14 realms of which Charles is now head of state, including Australia, Canada, Jamaica, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

The Scots, Irish and Welsh don't have much love for Elizabeth. The Celtic fans are celebrating it seems rather clearly. I feel her death could lead to the break up of the UK if Scotland, Ireland and Wales sever ties with the monarchy. It is the English dominated BBC that is making it sound as if the entire UK can't stop crying. I don't give a damn that she is dead and neither should most coloured people around the world upon whom she only inflicted cruelty and harm.

Pakistan to observe day of mourning tomorrow over Queen Elizabeth’s death

Pakistan will observe a day of mourning on Monday (tomorrow) over the death of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth, state news agency APP reported.

Upon the recommendation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif accorded his approval for observing a day of mourning in Pakistan, on September 12, on the demise of Queen Elizabeth II.

Separately, the Pakistan High Commission in London tweeted: “To express solidarity with the government and people of the United Kingdom on the sad demise of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Pakistan will observe a national day of mourning on 12 Sept. 2022. During the day, Pakistan’s flag will be lowered to half-mast throughout the country.”

Meanwhile, the coffin of Queen Elizabeth will be taken from her home in the Scottish Highlands on a slow, six-hour journey to Edinburgh on Sunday, giving the public a chance to line the roads in tribute to the monarch who died after seven decades on the throne.

The death of the 96-year-old has provoked tears, sadness and warm tributes, not just from the queen’s own close family and many in Britain, but also from around the globe — reflecting her presence on the world stage for the last 70 years.

On Sunday at 0900 GMT, Elizabeth’s oak coffin, which has been in the ballroom of Balmoral Castle covered with the royal standard of Scotland and with a wreath of flowers on top, will be placed in a hearse by six gamekeepers.

Accompanied by the queen’s daughter, Princess Anne, the cortege will slowly make its way from the remote castle, winding through small towns and villages to Edinburgh where the coffin will be taken to the throne room of the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Tens of thousands have gathered at royal palaces in the days since Elizabeth’s death on Thursday to leave flowers and to pay their respects.

“I know how deeply you, the entire nation — and I think I may say the whole world — sympathise with me in the irreparable loss we have all suffered,” her son King Charles said at a ceremony on Saturday where he was officially proclaimed the new monarch.

“It is the greatest consolation to me to know of the sympathy expressed by so many to my sister and brothers and that such overwhelming affection and support should be extended to our whole family in our loss.”

While Elizabeth’s death was not totally unexpected given her age, the fact her health had been deteriorating and the passing of her husband of 73 years Prince Philip last year, there was still a sense of shock at the news.

“We all thought she was invincible,” her grandson Prince William, now the heir to the throne, told a well-wisher on Saturday as he met crowds at Windsor castle.

Funeral
Elizabeth’s state funeral will be held at London’s Westminster Abbey on Monday, Sept 19, which will be a public holiday in Britain, officials announced.

US President Joe Biden said he would be there, although full details of the event and the attendees have not yet been released.

Before that, her coffin will be flown to London and there will be a sombre procession when it is later moved from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall where it will lie in state for four days.

In 2002, more than 200,000 people queued to pay their respects to Elizabeth’s mother while her coffin lay in state and aides have previously said there is an expectation that millions may want to visit.

“It goes without saying that we can expect large numbers of people,” the spokesperson for Prime Minister Liz Truss told reporters.

Truss, whose appointment as prime minister on Tuesday was the queen’s last public act, will join King Charles as both the new head of state and prime minister tour the four nations of the United Kingdom in the next few days.

Charles, 73, immediately succeeded his mother but was officially proclaimed as king on Saturday in a colourful ceremony laden with pageantry and dating back centuries following a meeting of the Accession Council at St James’s — a royal palace built for Henry VIII in the 1530s.

Charles is now the 41st monarch in a line that traces its origins to the Norman King William the Conqueror who captured the English throne in 1066.

Elizabeth’s death has capped a difficult couple of years for the royal family which has seen the loss of Prince Philip, its patriarch, her second son Prince Andrew accused of sex abuse — which he denied — and grandson Prince Harry and his wife Meghan step down from royal life to move to California.

Harry and Meghan have been alienated from the rest of the family since, with Harry and brother William said to be barely on speaking terms.

But the death of their grandmother managed to reunite them, as they appeared together with their wives outside Windsor Castle to meet the crowds on Saturday.

A royal source described it as an important show of unity at an incredibly difficult time for the family.

So you are the Emperor of all "coloured people"? You set their rules? I know plenty of Caribbean folk who would give you short shrift.

I'm half-Celt and don't think you speak for the British Celts.

Charles was Prince of Wales and well regarded there after his 1969 address in their language.
He was also Duke of Cornwall and much admired there.

The majority of Ulster is for the Monarchy.

The SNP say they will keep the Monarchy if they secede from the Union.

The Republic of Ireland is not part of UK. Yet recall The Queen's visit in 2012 - speaking a few words of Gaelic, and shaking hands with Martin McGuinness, the one-time commander-in-chief of the IRA, in the light of the assassination of her great-uncle Louis. That was real forgiveness and reconciliation.

Yeah fancy that, racism at its finest when the BBC is dominated by the English.

Scots of all races have just lined the route of 175 miles from Balmoral to Holyrood to pay their respects.

Scotland is seeking independence from the UK. Don't let the death of the Queen, and a line of royalists change this fact. In fact, once this is all over, Scotland will be pushing for independence full throttle.

Not “Scotland”, or “Scots”. A lot of Scots are patriotic and pro UK.

Its mainly Scottish actors in Hollywood, Twitter activists & the SNP/Sturgeon who want independence.

Brexit changed that - plenty resent being pulled out of the EU against their will so the IndyRef2 vote could be on a knife-edge next time. But The Queen had 75% approval rating in Scotland and at least some of that affection will transfer to The King, so if they secede it will be a Kingdom of Scotland for the near future at least.

While the Queen was alive:

The "No" side won with 2,001,926 (55.3%) voting against independence and 1,617,989 (44.7%) voting in favour. The turnout of 84.6% was the highest recorded for an election or referendum in the United Kingdom since the January 1910 general election, which was held before the introduction of universal suffrage.

I am simply stating the facts of your beloved queen has a record of massive human rights abuses that I have mentioned in a previous post. Do you mean you are a fan of Glasgow Celtic a Football club with Irish roots or some other Celt? I speak for most Glasgow Celtic fans I assure you.

Sure the Glasgow Rangers will be upset over her death. Ulster is dominated by Rangers fans not that it has anything to do with this thread. Well of course the SNP will say that for now with so many white Brits feeling so upset and emotional over Elizabeth's death. We'll see what they say when the next referendum comes.

Apologizing to white Irish people is one thing but she has never done that to coloured people of Pakistan, India or Africa. I will never stand up if her coffin drove past me, i don't respect and never liked her. By the way she was also responsible for Diana's death and hated Meghan too. Have a good ride to the dark side Lizzy!

Foreign leaders banned from travelling by private jet to Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral

Heads of state travelling to England for Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral will be forbidden from travelling in private jets and helicopters, according to leaked guidance.

Foreign dignitaries and their spouses have been asked to travel to Britain on commercial flights, according to Foreign Office guidance seen by Politico.

Only heads of state and their partners will be invited to the ceremony, according to the guidelines. It is not clear if former heads of state will receive an invitation.

In the document, sent to overseas embassies late on Saturday night, the department said it “regrets that, because of limited space at the state funeral service and associated events, no other members of the principal guest’s family, staff or entourage may be admitted”.

The document reportedly warns leaders restrictions could be imposed on their use of official cars.

Dilemma for Joe Biden

The reported plans emerged after CNN reported that Joe Biden was facing a dilemma over whether to invite Donald Trump to join him in the funeral.

According to the network, Mr Trump’s attendance was in his successor’s hands.

The logistics of having to decide whether Mr Trump would join him in crossing the Atlantic on Air Force One would be problematic for Mr Biden, given that his predecessor still refuses to accept the result of the 2020 election.

<b>Royal Family greet Queen Elizabeth II's coffin at Buckingham Palace</b>

The Queen's children and grandchildren greeted her coffin on its arrival at Buckingham Palace.

The King was there with Royal Family members including his wife Camilla, the Queen Consort, Princes William and Harry and their wives, Catherine and Meghan.

The hearse, accompanied by the Queen's daughter Princess Anne, travelled by road after a flight from Edinburgh.

Despite the rain, crowds gathered along the route to pay their respects.

There was applause from the thousands gathered outside as the hearse arrived at the palace.

Shouts of "hip, hip hooray" were heard as the sombre mood gave way to respectful celebration of the late Queen.

Many people lining the street put down their umbrellas as a sign of respect while phone cameras lit up the crowds as people documented the historic moment.

The King and Queen Consort have since left Buckingham Palace after witnessing the arrival of the coffin.

The procession to the palace marks one of the final stages of a solemn journey, which began on Sunday at the Queen's Balmoral estate where she died aged 96 on Thursday.

In a statement released on Tuesday evening, the Princess Royal, Princess Anne, said it had been an "honour and a privilege" to accompany the Queen on her final journeys, having travelled with her mother's coffin from Balmoral to London.

"Witnessing the love and respect shown by so many on these journeys has been both humbling and uplifting," she said.

"We will all share unique memories. I offer my thanks to each and every one who share our sense of loss.

"We may have been reminded how much of her presence and contribution to our national identity we took for granted."

Thousands paid their respects as the Queen lay at rest in St Giles' Cathedral, in Edinburgh overnight, before her coffin was flown to RAF Northolt, in north-west London this evening.

The national anthem was played as the RAF plane, which has previously been used to evacuate people from Afghanistan and deliver weapons to Ukraine, prepared to take off.

The number of people outside the palace began to swell this afternoon - although it thinned slightly as the rain became heavier, with most of those gathered wearing raincoats and carrying umbrellas - creating a subdued atmosphere.

But there were still several thousand waiting along the barriers outside Buckingham Palace.

Among them was Londoner Alex Myers, and her dog Minnie, who decided to take a detour to the palace after hearing the Queen's coffin was on its way.

She said the atmosphere when the hearse arrived was "incredible and inspiring and very moving".

"I think the outpouring of love has been a really amazing thing," she said, as both her and Minnie headed home slightly wetter than when they arrived, hours before.

The Queen's coffin was in a bespoke new hearse designed in consultation with her, to allow the public a clear view of her casket.

The Queen's coffin will rest in the Bow Room of the palace overnight before it is borne in procession on a gun carriage departing the palace for Westminster at exactly 14:22 BST on Wednesday.

In the past, the Queen has hosted foreign royalty and dignitaries in the room, including King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, former US president George Bush, and Premier League footballers.

It is in the palace's west wing, was formerly known as the Bow Library and was named after the window that runs along one side.

On Wednesday, the Queen's coffin will be taken via The Mall, Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall and Parliament Square to Westminster Hall.

Flights from Heathrow could face disruption to ensure silence over central London as the Queen's coffin is moved, the airport said.

The coffin will lie in state in the hall until the morning of the funeral next Monday. More than 400,000 people are expected to be able to file past it there.

From 17:00 BST on Wednesday, people will be able to pay their respects, although mourners have been warned to expect long queues.

There will be some assistance for those unable to stand for a long time, Downing Street said, with the Prime Minister's official spokesman adding that "everything possible" would be done to facilitate those who could not wait for extended periods.

Barriers for the queue were being placed as far out as Southwark Park, in south-east London, about three miles from Westminster.

The Queen's final public appearance at Buckingham Palace was on the east front balcony on 5 June, where she stood alongside family members during Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

Earlier, after standing vigil by his mother's coffin in Edinburgh on Monday, King Charles travelled to Northern Ireland alongside Camilla, the Queen Consort, where he met politicians and officials.

He said the Queen had "never ceased to pray for the best of times for this place and its people" and said she had felt deeply "the significance of the role she herself played in bringing together those whom history had separated".

The King pledged to "seek the welfare of all the inhabitants of Northern Ireland".

He received a message of condolence from the speaker of the assembly Alex Maskey, a member of Sinn Féin, who said the Queen recognised how a "small but significant gesture can make a huge difference in changing attitudes".

More than 26,000 mourners filed past the Queen's coffin at St Giles', where she lay at rest before being taken to Edinburgh airport and flown to RAF Northolt, in West London.

People queued for hours with the final wristbands to granting access being given out at 13:00 BST, leaving some of those turned away in tears.

Tributes to the Queen were respectfully observed across 30 EFL games and at Liverpool and Tottenham's Champions League matches as UK football resumed after the weekend's postponements.

All English, Welsh and Northern Irish football and senior Scottish football was called off after the UK's longest-serving monarch died aged 96 last week.

At almost all English Football League (EFL) matches the National Anthem was played. A 'period of silence' was held at EFL games as well as Liverpool and Tottenham's Champions League matches.

BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty reported that the vast majority of Liverpool supporters at a capacity Anfield observed a shorter period of silence impeccably, with one or two rogue shouts at the start of the tribute quickly shouted down before their fixture against Ajax.

A minute's silence was respected at Swansea City in the only EFL game taking place in Wales while the Championship club opted not to play the National Anthem before their home game with Sheffield United.

Liverpool said before the game against Ajax that a 'period of silence' would be held and it lasted for about 30 seconds.

Liverpool fans booed 'Abide With Me' and 'God Save the Queen' before last season's FA Cup final but manager Jurgen Klopp said on Monday he was confident they would show respect against Ajax, as they did against Manchester United last season following the death of Cristiano Ronaldo's baby boy.

On Tuesday, the Hillsborough Survivors Support Alliance, along with Liverpool legends Sir Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness, also urged fans to show respect.

A minute's silence was observed before Tottenham's Champions League game at Sporting Lisbon, where the Champions League anthem was also played.

But the Champions League anthem was not played at Anfield, nor was there a Champions League banner in the centre circle.

Neither the Champions League anthem nor the British National Anthem will be played at any of this week's Champions League games in the UK, with Uefa having rejected requests from Chelsea, Manchester City and Rangers to play 'God Save the King' at their home games on Wednesday.

Both sets of players wore black armbands at Anfield, as did all EFL players, while flags were flown at half-mast. Some clubs also ensured they played appropriate music and suspended their regular advertisements as a mark of respect.

Elsewhere, Mansfield Town released 96 doves during the players' handshake before their League Two game at home to Carlisle United.

Classical singer Russell Watson sang the national anthem before Preston's Championship game against Burnley while at AFC Wimbledon's League Two home game with Northampton, messages recorded by local MPs were played as they joined a group of more than 50 dignitaries to lay a floral tribute in the centre circle before kick-off.

A Swansea statement read: "The EFL provided all clubs with guidance around the suggested form and order any tributes should take. While that guidance was not prescriptive, as a club we tailored our tribute in a manner that we deemed appropriate.

"We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to supporters of both clubs who impeccably observed the minute's silence, while the tributes on display up and down the country was the perfect way to remember Her late Majesty."

Swansea and fellow Welsh club Wrexham issued requests for their fans to respect the minute's silence, but there was a minority of shouting and booing before Wrexham's National League game at home to Dagenham & Redbridge, partly from fans rebuking other supporters.

Chelsea, Rangers and Manchester City were all directly refused permission by Uefa after requesting to play the national anthem before their Champions League fixtures.

The three clubs all asked to play God Save the King but the governing body declined to make exceptions in allowing it to be played as part of commemorations for Queen Elizabeth II.

Queen's state funeral is a 'major operation', says military expert
Organising a state funeral is a "major operation" and can involve "up to 6,000" troops, Retired Senior RAF Air Marshall Edward Stringer has said.

Speaking to Sky News this morning, Mr Stringer said plans for the Queen's funeral would have run across the whole of government but it would ultimately be the palace that made "all the final decisions".

He said: "From a military aspect, it has to be seen as an operation in its own right. It can involve up to 5,000-6,000 troops."

Mr Stringer also said the Queen's funeral had been "long in the planning" and the military would have set a framework around the funeral.

"That will be the frame around the scared and familial aspects of the church service in Westminster Abbey," he added.

Asked about the level of security that would be needed for world leaders, he added: "Heads of state arriving all at the same time and they're all going to be in one building in one city and that city is London. I think it's almost unprecedented.

"You only have to go back to Nelson Mandela's funeral of 2012 to find a similar gathering.

"And so, of course, the security operation will be intense."

McDonald’s to close restaurants on Queen’s funeral

McDonald’s will close all their restaurants for most of Monday to ‘pay their respect’ to Queen Elizabeth II.

It was announced on Saturday that the late monarch’s funeral will take place at 11am on September 19.

Tens of thousands of mourners are expected to flock to central London to wave a last goodbye, while the service at Westminster Abbey will be watched by millions on TV.

Some businesses have already decided to close, including supermarkets and high street favourites, with many more expected to follow suit.

This afternoon McDonald’s also announced changes in their opening and closing times for the historic day.

The move will give workers the opportunity to come to terms with the tragedy with the rest of the nation.

In a statement on Twitter, the fast-food chain said: ‘In honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and to enable everyone at McDonald’s to pay their respects, our restaurants across the UK will be closed from midnight until 5pm on Monday, September 19.’

Operating hours and services may also vary after 5pm depending on the area.

Responding to a customer asking about deliveries, the company said: ‘Rest assured they’ll be aiming to make deliveries as soon as possible.’

Saudi authorities have arrested a man who claimed to have travelled to the Muslim holy city of Mecca to perform an umrah pilgrimage on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II.

The man, a Yemeni national, published a video clip of himself on social media on Monday at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Islam’s holiest site, where non-Muslims are forbidden.

In the clip, he held up a banner saying: “Umrah for the soul of Queen Elizabeth II, we ask God to accept her in heaven and among the righteous.”

The footage was circulated widely on Saudi social media, with Twitter users calling for the man’s arrest.

Saudi Arabia forbids pilgrims to Mecca from carrying banners or chanting slogans. While it is acceptable to perform umrah on behalf on deceased Muslims, this does not apply to non-Muslims like the Queen, who was supreme governor of the Church of England, the mother church of the worldwide Anglican communion.

Security forces at the Grand Mosque “arrested a resident of Yemeni nationality who appeared in a video clip carrying a banner inside the Grand Mosque, violating the regulations and instructions for umrah”, said a statement carried by state media late on Monday.

“He was arrested, legal measures were taken against him and he was referred to the public prosecution.”

State television broadcast segments about the incident that included the video clip, but with the banner blurred.

A Chinese government delegation has been banned from attending the lying-in-state of Queen Elizabeth II, according to parliamentary sources.

Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle is understood to have refused a request for access over Chinese sanctions against five MPs and two peers.

Queen Elizabeth will lie in state in Westminster Hall until she is buried on Monday.

China says it is still considering whether to attend the funeral.

A high-ranking official from Beijing had been expected to be amongst the guests, but a Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman said earlier on Friday that no decision had been made.

The spokeswoman said they had not seen reports about the Westminster Hall ban, which first emerged on the Politico website.

"As a host, the UK is certainly familiar with diplomatic protocols and proper manners of receiving guests," the spokeswoman Mao Ning said.

The Speaker's office told the BBC it did not comment on security matters.

Downing Street declined to comment, with a spokesperson saying "admission to Parliament is a matter for Parliament".

Last year, China imposed travel bans and asset freezes on nine Britons - including seven parliamentarians - for accusing Beijing of mistreating Uighur Muslims.

That led to China's ambassador to the UK being banned from Parliament - a move which has now been extended to a delegation that wanted to pay their respects at Queen Elizabeth's lying-in-state.

UK-China relations are already strained and this ban is unlikely to help.

The Queen's coffin is currently lying in state in Westminster Hall, part of the parliamentary estate, before Monday's state funeral at nearby Westminster Abbey.

According to the parliamentary rule book Erskine May, control of Westminster Hall is shared between the Lord Great Chamberlain - who is appointed by the monarch - and the speakers of both the Commons and the Lords.

There is no specific mention regarding control of access for an occasion such as a lying-in-state, but when it comes to "invitations to foreign dignitaries to address both Houses in Westminster Hall" these are "ordinarily" issued by the agreement of all three.

Last September, Sir Lindsay and House of Lords Speaker Lord McFall told China's ambassador to the UK he could not come to Parliament because of Beijing's sanctions.

At the time, that ban was criticised by the Chinese government as "despicable and cowardly".

On Thursday, the group of seven MPs and peers, including former Tory ministers Iain Duncan Smith and Tim Loughton, urged the Foreign Secretary to withdraw an invitation to President Xi of China to attend the Queen's funeral.

In a letter, they said it would be "wholly inappropriate" for the Chinese government to be represented, given its human rights record.

Several Western countries have imposed sanctions on officials in China following rights abuse allegations against the mostly Muslim Uighur minority group.

China has detained Uighurs at camps in the north-west region of Xinjiang, where allegations of torture, forced labour and sexual abuse have emerged.

It has denied the allegations of abuse, claiming the camps are "re-education" facilities used to combat terrorism.

China's President Xi Jinping is on the guest list for the state funeral but is not thought likely to attend.

A Downing Street spokesman said it was a convention that countries with which the UK has diplomatic relations should be invited to state funerals.

All this unprecedented devotion for the Queen is nuts, this blind worship can’t be accepted if you’re Muslim. These people need to recite their shahahdah if they are people of the true faith.

I'm sure the people of the carribean will decide whether they want to continue to have a white British monarch as their head of state very soon. And then we will see of they still "care" for their oppressors.

13 hours is a long time to wait in any line, where was Posh?

I find it interesting and bizarre that IK has hasn't had a word to say after her passing.

For someone who's met the Queen and spent some years in England, I was shocked that after after all this time, IK has yet to mention a word after her death.

The only reason I can think is off is because he knows he won't be invited to attend the funeral as he's no longer head of state.

Not a good look for IK it has to be said.

This is an absurd comment.

Someone with his level of fame and wealth doesn't need to do "publicity stunts".

I think the situation for IK atm means he has better things to do, from his party issues, his personal issues and the plight of Pakistanis. Imran cares about his people. It would make no sense for even the PM of Pakistan to attend a funeral when many are dying in his homeland.

Imran was at Diana's funeral but she was a great human being unlike this foggie lot.

Flight of Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin confirmed as most tracked ever

The flight carrying Queen Elizabeth II's coffin to London is officially the most tracked flight in history.

Flightradar24 recorded 4.79 million users viewing the Queen’s final flight, with a further 296,000 following along via YouTube live stream.

The RAF Globemaster C-17 aircraft took off from Edinburgh Airport at 17:20 on Tuesday 13 September and landed at RAF Northolt one hour 12 minutes later.

2 words - Legend and respect!

I'm very surprised IK hasn't said a word yet considering he has met the Queen, was at a ball with the now King Charles III and Camilla, and above all, was host to both Prince and Princess of Wales (William and Kate) during their visit to Pakistan in 2019.

How long does it take to tweet a few sentences?

Very bizarre.

Man arrested after approaching Queen's coffin

A man has been arrested after he approached Queen Elizabeth's coffin from a queue of mourners in Westminster Hall.

He was arrested under the Public Order Act and was taken into custody, Metropolitan Police said.

The incident in Parliament occurred at about 22:00 BST on Friday night, the force said in a statement.

The live video feed of the Queen lying in state cut away for a brief period during the incident.

A statement from Scotland Yard said: "Around 22:00 on Friday 16 September officers from the Met's Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command detained a man in Westminster Hall following a disturbance."

A Parliament spokesperson said: "We're aware of an incident in Westminster Hall, in which a member of the public moved out of the queue and towards the catafalque.

"They have now been removed from the hall and the queue restarted with minimal disruption."

Earlier in the evening, the King was joined by siblings Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, in a vigil in the hall.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will embark on a two-day UK visit during which he will represent Pakistan at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II and meet PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif.

People familiar with the matter told Geo News that the premier will visit England this Sunday, a day after concluding his Uzbekistan visit, where he attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Head of States (CHS) summit.

The prime minister is scheduled to have a three-hour long meeting with the elder Sharif on the day he touches down in the country. He will spend a busy day in the UK capital attending a number of engagements.

PM Shehbaz will return to Pakistan on Monday soon after attending the state funeral for the late Queen — who died at the age of 96 on September 8 at her Balmoral Castle residence.

The coffin of the late monarch has been lying at the historic Westminster Hall since Wednesday.

Some 750,000 people in total are expected to file past the coffin ahead of the state funeral on Monday which presidents, prime ministers, royalty and other world leaders are due to attend.

US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron and the leaders of Australia, Canada and Jamaica will join the emperor of Japan among the congregation.

Second hand wristbands given out to people queuing to see the Queen laying in state in Westminster Hall are being sold on eBay for triple figures.

After paying their respects to the Queen, some mourners have speedily posted their used wristbands on the online marketplace, with the highest price so far achieved standing at £199.99.

At least five of the colourful bands have sold on the site so far, with more auctions ending over the next few days.

Bids on bands currently on sale, include a bright orange one fresh from today - Saturday - which has already received bids of over £400. The auction is not set to end until Tuesday. Despite the high price tag, the seller is sweetening the deal with free postage.

That’s up to each country, Barbados has already become a republic and Charles (before he was King) helped them do so when they requested this. No problems at all.

It’s liberal nonsense all round. What these folk forget to mention is that the Queen APPROVED the wedding of prince Harry with a half black commoner; and it wasn’t just the Caribbean folk who adored the Queen, but blacks in the UK too. Problem was, Megan thought she could ride the wave of victimhood by claiming the Queen was racist. Thank god it back fired.

What I think is that the optics are bad - Windrush Scandal might have been seen as a mistake, but then the treatment of Meghan on top of it will look bad.

Why?

Is it also the right decision to ensure peado Andrew could be caretaker King if Charlie and Willy are out of the country? This is not shunned, surely as a loyal subject you realise this?

Harry relinquished his royal duties for love, it was his choice, but now you are defending Harry? A prince of the Monarch?

Peado Andrew on the other hand was stripped off his royal and military duties, and he is not a caretaker of King Charles III, since Charles himself banished Andrew.

Read up a little.

And Peado Andrew cannot become King unless the entire bloodline of William is dead.

Keep your theories, and talk facts, the here and now.

You really dont get it lol.

Peado Andrew could deputise as King if required, this is official. Most likely wont happen as it will cause uproar but in theory its possible.

So if he does deputise as King, will you bow your neck to the Peado King? Yes or No :)))

Facts say otherwise.

You are already subservient to the Monarchy, no need to bow your neck (though you have come a long way from kneeling and prostrating) including the protection abroad, and the cash you earn via your business, it isn’t legal tender unless the Head of State is present on the bank notes you spend.

PM arrives in London to attend Queen Elizabeth’s funeral
Shehbaz will represent Pakistan at the state funeral of late Queen Elizabeth II in London on September 19, says FO

LONDON:
Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday arrived in London to attend state funeral of late Queen Elizabeth II at the invitation of the British government.

The prime minister, during his visit to the UK, would represent Pakistan at the state funeral of late Queen Elizabeth II in London on September 19, the Foreign Office Spokesperson said in a press release.

According to Express News, PM Shehbaz will meet his brother Nawaz Sharif to discuss the current political and economic situation in Pakistan among other issues.

After the stay in the United Kingdom, the prime minister will leave for the United States to participate in the high-level debate of the 77th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).

According to BBC, the funeral of Queen Elizabeth will take place at 11:00 BST on Monday, 19 September. It will be held at Westminster Abbey in London, the historic church where Britain's kings and queens are crowned.

The ceremony is expected to draw to a close just before noon, when the Last Post - a short bugle call - will be played. A two-minute national silence will follow.

After attending the funeral, the premier will leave for the United States the same day. In the US, PM Shehbaz will be addressing the 77th Session of UN General Assembly (UNGA), scheduled to be held from September 20 to 26 in New York.

He will also hold bilateral meetings with various international leaders.

A day earlier, the premier returned from his two-day visit to Uzbekistan, where he attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit.

At the summit, the prime minister called upon the member states of the SCO to devise Pakistan-specific programmes on climate change, which has induced devastating rains and subsequent floods in the country.

He stressed the dire need for assistance by the international community, including relief and rehabilitation.

The summit meeting adopted a joint statement that called for a “balance” between reducing carbon emissions and allowing poorer states to catch up with economically-developed countries.

The statement “unanimously recognised the negative consequences of climate change and the need for urgent action”.

Nobody has ever deputised as King in the 1000-year history of the Monarchy, Except perhaps Prince John when King Richard went crusading. In 1185 CE.

Were Charles and William to die in a helicopter crash then Prince George would become the heir. It could be that Anne or Edward would stand in until George reached 18. There is no way that Parliament would accept a King Andrew, and HM Armed Forces would refuse to swear to him.

Charles and William have stood in for the Queen as she couldn't go to the state opening. Those are the circumstances they are talking about standing in for royals. Charles can change via an of parliament to remove Andrew and Harry and promote Anne and Edward (once Gerge is 21 the order changes again)

All you have is what-aboutary, hypotheticals, and theory.

Facts say otherwise.

You are already subservient to the Monarchy, no need to bow your neck (though you have come a long way from kneeling and prostrating) including the protection abroad, and the cash you earn via your business, it isn’t legal tender unless the Head of State is present on the bank notes you spend.

Why is peado Prince still in the council where he is a deputy to be king ?

I won’t even acknowledge he’s any moral person let alone king . It’s all ceremonial,

Will you or will you not bow for king Andy if this happens, ? We both know you will but just for the record
