What's new

Quetta Gladiators (203/5) defeat Islamabad United (199/8) by 5 wickets in Match 18 of PSL 7

Couldn't watch first innings, but as per scorecard Dawson played very average innings, he should've at least scored 8 to 10 more runs which can be crucial.

Islamabad needs to get Roy early.

Wrote it before those 10 run would've been crucial.

I don't like Shadab's reliance on his friend circle particularly Hasan who has been proven now to be not an effective T20 bowler. Zeeshan should have bowled more today.

Roy with hearty hug UA. Crucial power he added to Sarfraz's knock. Changed the game. Hopefully will get his form back.

Yes, its ridiculous to give just one over to Zeeshan that too after 14 overs were gone . There are some match winner bowler, in Hasan Ali we have one match losing bowler . Not just in the WC , he is losing matches for his team quite regularly now. He is a good test bowler but T20 is not his game.

Very low, but still very exciting. Looking forward to see if he has what it takes to still entertain

He exceeded my expectations

Those sixes against Hassan Ali and Wasim JR were absolutely smoking!

Hasan Ali is a burden as of now. He needs to take a break from LOIs to rethink his strategies.

Big hitting
Tight chase
Good overseas knocks
Redemption for Sarfraz
Comeback for Umar
Pumping atmosphere in the crowd
The great VIv Richards on his feet and jumping in glee

What a match and what an advert for the PSL!

Brainless captaincy by Shadab.

If you are going to keep playing pathetic match losers like Hasan then this is a well-deserved defeat.

If they don't drop these match losers, hope they don't qualify.

Great game and I think Umar's cameo played a big role in team success. Imagine the pressure he was under but he delivered. He brought himself into the discussion for the spot of a power hitter in middle order.

Wasim JR had a shocker today

Hassan Ali was just doing what he does really

Also, as usual, hasan dropped a sitter. He is becoming a habitual dropper in a tight game.

He had double pressure, the pressure of the game and the pressure of his career being on the line.

Credit where its due, his innings really got the juices flowing today.

Wasim Jr isnt an international level bowler despite what the hype machine here says.

Some were even wanting him in tests ahead of Faheem.

Anyway, top 4 are pretty even with Sultans a tad bit better. Any of the teams can win this year.

This I agree. Wasim Jr with all due respect is an ideal net bowler as bowls far too many balls in the slot for the batsmen. Wasim Jr unfortunately has not much going for him as he doesn't have a stock delivery that separates him from rest. He needs to learn the art of bouncers, swing with new ball and length bowling. What he also needs is more pace as with his slingy action he should touch more than 145.

For the time being Faheem is the superior bowler and batsman to Wasim Jr.

He’s awful batting and bowling and now fielding. People who want him over Faheem need to watch cricket. This guy will struggle to average 20 odd with the bat while in bowling will be surprised if he averages below 40 with economy of less then 4. Not sure what people see in him.

Sultans are seriously overrated

QG all of a sudden look like contenders with Roy and now Umar Akmal. They need another pace bowler in the side desperately

It's good to see PSL is exposing these mediocre bowlers.

Hopefully, the selectors are watching and are honest when they select players for the national team.

At the moment, Naseem and Rauf >>> Hasan and Wasim.

In terms of where we belong to in Pakistan, Multan is our team, and we as a whole family support them primarily, but as a fan of Shahid Afridi, the loyalty is always somewhat split when he`s playing for one of the teams in the PSL. Therefore, Quetta are now at least my second most favourite team - if not the most anyway. Mightily pleased for Afridi that he bowled well and that it was his over, plus the brilliant direct hit by him in the very next over, which turned the game in Quetta`s favour, although all the momentum was lost quickly in the death overs of the innings. Easily the game of the tournament so far with all the twists and turns that it had. In the end, Umar Akmal`s little cameo ended up deciding the game. Jason Roy`s inclusion, and the absolute supreme firm that he's in, has made a huge difference to this team. Looking good, aren't they? Happy for them! :)

Sarfaraz speaking after end of match:

"I feel that our top-order played an outstanding innings. We first had Roy and Ahsan put up a good opening stand but the innings that Umar Akmal played tonight, in my view, brought us back into the match"

"Quetta Gladiators have played good cricket all season and we always try to fight until the last ball is bowled; As far as Nawaz is concerned, it is a setback to us as he was doing well for us so we will feel his absence for the remainder of the tournament but I am pleased that the way Shahid Afridi and Noor Ahmed bowled, both are positive signs for us"

"As far as asking Shahid Afridi to bowl with the new ball is concerned, I had discussed this with Moin Khan and went ahead with this idea because Islamabad openers are big shot players and so we decided to take a chance and see what happens"

Quetta Gladiators delivered a second successive 200-plus chase as they defeated Islamabad United by five wickets in a last over thriller at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore in the 18th fixture of the HBL Pakistan Super League 7 on Saturday night. Gladiators captain Sarfaraz Ahmed (player of the match) took his side home with an unbeaten 50-run contribution.

Set an imposing 200-run target, Gladiators got off to a blazing start as Jason Roy and Ahsan Ali provided an 88-run start with Roy falling on the last ball of the eighth over of the chase. Roy was dropped at 25 by Wasim Jnr, the right-hander didn’t take a backward step and continued the onslaught in his sensational 54 off 27 balls (10 fours, one six) before he was bowled by Shadab.

Ahsan followed in the next over with Dawson pinning him lbw for 30 off 23 balls (three fours, one six).

James Vince (29 off 22) kept Gladiators in the hunt against the mounting required rate as Shadab, the leading wicket-taker of the ongoing season, produced another outstanding spell.

Shadab had the last laugh as he dismissed Vince in the same over (14th) after conceding a six and four. Shadab also accounted for Iftikhar Ahmed to take his season’s wicket tally to 17.

Umar Akmal who made his first appearance for the season stroked a stunning 23 off eight balls (three sixes) to initiate the Gladiators comeback. Umar added 52 off 20 balls with Sarfaraz for the match winning fifth-wicket partnership.

The duo turned the game on its head by taking 17 runs from the 18th over bowled by Hasan Ali when Gladiators needed 44 off the last 18 balls. They then took 19 off the penultimate over bowled by Wasim Jnr who dismissed Umar in the same over.

Sarfaraz finished the game for his side with two balls to spare as he scored back-to-back boundaries off Hasan ending with an incredible unbeaten 50 off 32 balls (three fours, two sixes).

Gladiators have now won three out of their six matches just like United who also have six points from as many matches. United though occupy the third spot ahead of Gladiators fourth on the basis of a superior net run-rate.

Other performers

United who were put into bat had an innings of two halves. After an explosive start courtesy Alex Hales’ 62 off 38 balls (four fours, four sixes), United had to endure a middle-order collapse. Hales who played some typically aggressive shots added 48 for the first-wicket with Rahmanullah Gurbaz (19) and 52 for the second-wicket with captain Shadab Khan (12).

From 100 for one in the 11th over United crashed to 109 for six in the 13th as Gladiators’ veteran all-rounder Shahid Afridi took two wickets in one over which also included Hales’ run out.

Afridi then ran out Azam Khan (0) with a direct hit from mid-wicket as his inspirational burst brought the Gaddafi Stadium crowd to its feet.

However, Gladiators’ joy was short-lived as United all-rounder Faheem Ashraf produced a scintillating 55-run innings (28 balls, five fours, four sixes) adding 78 for the seventh-wicket with Liam Dawson (13) to bring his side back in the hunt.

After Faheem and Dawson perished on successive balls of the final over bowled by James Faulkner, Mohammad Wasim Jnr hit two massive sixes off the final two balls of the innings to take United to the highest total of the Lahore-leg so far as the 2016 and 2018 champions finished their 20 overs at 199 for eight

Afridi with two for 27 was the pick of the Gladiators bowlers who in an otherwise shoddy bowling performance conceded 20 extras including as many as 16 wides.

Player of the match Sarfaraz Ahmed: “We lost back-to-back wickets and had some dot balls yet we knew that if we stay at the wicket we will win. We were provided a great start by Jason Roy and Ahsan Ali and James Vince also made a valuable contribution. Umar Akmal changed the game with his blazing innings. We took a chance by handing Shahid Afridi the new ball as we knew that their batters try and attack from the start and that would give us a chance.”

I do not believe they are overrated at all. They have been playing smart cricket. They have thinking bowlers and bats who have stuck to a plan and implemented it. One may not be as skillful as other, but better road plan can make up for the deficiencies.

Quetta has a a gun in the top order who may prove to be a difference. They need a support for Nasim. The loss of Hasnain has hurt their pace balance.

Sultan depend on two things,

1. Tim David coming off with the bat in the first or second innings

2. Their mediocre bowlers not being punished by the serious batsmen of the opposition.

How Rizwan has managed to win 6 out of 7 games with Anwar Ali, Muzarabani and Dahani is extremely surprising. These bowlers can go for 150 in 12 overs on an off day. Imran Tahir is their best bowler and Abbass is decent.

At some point, Khushdil’s honeymoon period with the ball is going to come to an end as well

completely absurd!
5/6 is too many victories for being sheer lucky.

As I said. they do their homework; study the opposition and implement the set strategy. This is how teams win in a professional setup. This is the reason why even at the peak of our talented cricketers, we never accumulated as many victories as we should (PCT)

Tim David singlehandedly won them 3 games! Their luck ran out last game when TD couldn’t get going. This will happen more often, where they will lose every time he doesn’t fire for them.

I personally do not like to make assumptions such as, if he/she wasn't there or did not perform, that would not happen. There is a reason why certain players are there and making impact. This is the MOST SIGNIFICANT reason why the best is the best - for some certain INDIVIDUAL - that certain someone sets the organization apart from the rest.

Credit to Sarfraz for batting to the end and marshaling the chase but IU bowlers were bowling absolute rubbish in the end. Hasan Ali and Wasim were awful. Crucial 3 six cameo by chota Akmal
Overall was an entertaining game
