Quinton de Kock reverses ODI retirement for Pakistan Tour [Update @ post#223]

Quiton scored another 50 in the final ICC world cup tournament of his Career. What a form he has been in recently.

He will probably be asked to play the 2027 World Cup just like Ben Stokes
 
He’s on a mission to win the World Cup. I’d like to see South Africa win if we don’t go through.
 
It is a shame De Kock will be retiring from ODIs after this World Cup but he has been a phenomenal player.

The only question mark over his legacy was his poor record in World Cups but it seems like he took that criticism personally.

At an individual, I don’t think there is anything that separates the two players. Gilchrist obviously had a much better support system and a more stable environment to thrive.

Purely in terms of natural ability and skill, it would be very harsh on De Kock to claim that he is nowhere near Gilchrist.

Best South African ODI opener ever and also their best ever WK batsman.
 
He's just 30. Retired from the longer formats previously, now walking away from ODIs.

Too early to exit international cricket might be the charm of International Leagues forcing them to take such decisions.
 
Another day another Fifty for Quinton De Kock in his last World Cup. This time he scored a 50 on 62 balls against New Zealand and still going strong. Every time he has gone past fifty in this World Cup, he's gone on to score a hundred. Might be time for another one.

Our guys at 30 are infact 34( and mostly rubbish) and thats why they give all 30yr old guys a bad name. He is at peak and 4 100s in a WC would suggest that have it badly wrong
 
South Africa great in awe of de Kock's World Cup run-scoring exploits

AB de Villiers has admitted he has been astonished by Quinton de Kock's record-breaking run during the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023.

While de Villiers is generally regarded as one of the best South Africa batters of recent times, de Kock has put his name up in lights with a string of superb individual performances at the World Cup in India.

De Kock already has four centuries to his name - the equal-second most by an individual at a Men's Cricket World Cup - and the 545 runs he has amassed through seven innings is the highest ever achieved by any South Africa batter in a single edition of the tournament.

The record-breaking run by de Kock has come as no surprise to de Villiers, who has always held his former teammate in the upper echelon of players to come from South Africa.

"He has always been very special to me since the very first day I watched him play," de Villiers said in India.

"Quinnie showed that he was just a class above anyone else.

"I have never really seen anyone hit the ball on the up consistently like he does and he has always maintained that form.

"Yes, one or two failures here or there, but he has always had the ability to bounce back."

De Kock's four centuries over the last month in India means the left-hander now has 21 ODI centuries to his name, four less than the 25 ODI tons that de Villiers managed during his long and distinguished white-ball career that stretched more than 13 years.

De Villiers even compiled an astonishing 482 runs for his country during the 11th edition of the World Cup in Australia in 2015, but de Kock has already surpassed that tally during his sensational run in India.

"I think it is the best I have ever seen him play in a World Cup," de Villiers added.

"He certainly seems to be at home, he has got a point to prove and he looks calm while he is doing it.

"South Africa needs him to give us that solid start as often as possible as it is really good for the middle over if we get that solid start."

With just one loss through seven matches in India and de Kock in fine form, de Villiers believes the Proteas are well on their way to qualifying for the semi-finals for the World Cup for the fifth time in their history and progressing even further this time around.

"At the moment the batting order is really good all round, and there is an all-round belief in each other and the bowlers," de Villiers noted.

"Everyone that was being doubted at the start of the tournament are starting to show form so, all in all, things are coming together and hopefully we will go all the way."

His 4 centuries gone into the drain with a meek show when it mattered. And dropped a crucial chance at the end as well. So much for being termed as world class.
 
Solid career.

He was a brilliant prospect coming up the ranks and in that regard, he's not done justice to his talent. Just a steady journey with several poor moments in high-pressure situations.
 
Third best opener of this generation, behind Rohit and Warner. He is better than Bairstow or Guptill imo.

Without his 4 centuries South Africa wouldn’t have made the semifinals to begin with. It is funny when people pretend that failing in World Cup knockouts cancels out everything that you have done earlier in the World Cup.

He is a brilliant WK batsman. Anyone who thinks he is not world class has no idea what he is talking about. If he is not world class then no WK batsman is.

Yes QdK is on par with Madhushanka as two world class players on show this tournament. No one has doubted that.
 
It is funny indeed how some fans just throw in the dustbin the performance and effort a player throughout his career just because he/his team failed in KO's. I guess then Brian Lara or Shoaib Akhtar's records don't matter as they were unsuccessful in KO's most of the time but since Mohd Hafeez starred in K'O his star value is above them

Bilateral games do not have the same weight as games in ICC tournaments.

I think only Test performances and ICC events performances should be used to judge a player's greatness (in cricket).
 
Eden Gardens became his waterloo. Failed in both matches. I have no idea why he had to be circumspect today. He should have played exactly the same way how he played in some of the matches.
 
the choker can retire from odis now and enjoy his leagues where he dont have to worry about choking. SA wont miss him as they want mentally strong players not choker like qdk who score easy runs
 
Great WK batsman, just a shame he couldn't carry through his form to an SF.

Early retirement should also send a warning to other players to limit league cricket if they can
 
‘He’ll go down as one of the legends’: De Kock bows out of ODIs

Quinton de Kock’s One Day International career has come to a close with defeat in Thursday’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup semi-final against Australia.

The South African opener had announced prior to the tournament that his campaign in India would be his last appearances for the Proteas in the format.

And De Kock’s ODI career ends at the semi-final stage after a superb individual effort throughout the tournament.

“He would have wanted to end things on a different note, but he'll remember the type of innings and fight we showed as a team,” South Africa’s captain Temba Bavuma said of De Kock after the semi-final loss to Australia.

“Us as players, we've enjoyed playing with him through all the years.

“In South Africa he will go down as one of the legends of the game.”

The 30-year-old’s tournament saw him score 594 runs in ten innings at an average of 59.40, with only Virat Kohli scoring more runs than De Kock.

Those impressive tournament numbers see De Kock end his ODI career (barring any future un-retirement) with hugely impressive stats.

Across his 155 ODIs the left-hander hit 6770 runs at an average of 45.74 and a strike rate of 96.64, setting the standard for South Africa and racking up 21 centuries.

Unfortunately for De Kock, his final appearance didn’t see the best of him out in the middle.

A phenomenal spell of new-ball bowling from Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc saw pressure build, particularly after Temba Bavuma departed for a duck at the end of the first over of the semi-final.

De Kock battling start came to an abrupt end when he tried to wrest back momentum and skied a catch off Hazlewood to end his ODI career with a 14-ball three.

And removing the left-hander was vital to Australia’s eventual success in the match, according to Australian quick Starc.

“We were able to build a lot of dot balls on them, which brings a shot like Quinton played,” Starc said.

“He's obviously been a big part of their World Cup and scoring runs, so to see the back of him early and get their middle order in, as I said, sooner rather than towards the back end where they can play with freedom was what we drew up.”

De Kock’s South Africa career is far from over however, with a T20 World Cup on the horizon in 2024.

Already South Africa’s record scorer in the shorter format, with 2277 runs in 79 innings at 32.52 and 137.33, De Kock could yet have the crowning moment that his career as one of the most impactful batters in the international game merits.

Lara and Akhtar are not odi atgs for that reason. Performance in kos is the difference between an atg and a national great

There is no difference between him and Gilchrist.

He is as good as he was in ODIs and I don’t think he would have fared worse in the 1999-2007 Australian Test team or Gilchrist wouldn’t have fared better in the 2013-2021 South African Test team.

People overrated former cricketers way too much. Both Gilchrist and QDK are WK royalty.

Nothing funny about that at all, that's how it should always be.
 
Looks like he wanted to leave to play these leagues in the future. It’s a shame he’s so good, and young and could have had a long career for his national side.
 
Brilliant innings from Quinton de Kock! He scored 54 runs off 38 balls against PBKS in IPL 2024.

This marks his 21st IPL half-century. De Kock continues to be one of the most underrated players in the IPL, displaying consistent performances every season.

Is quinton de kock playing in this world cup? Or did he retire from all form of cricket?
 
Quinton de Kock gone after making 54(43) for LSG against CSK. Not a brisk inning but vital in the context of the game.
 
His star seems to be crashing down quickly after his premature international retirement.
 
South African Men’s selection panel has named the squads for the upcoming all-format tour of Pakistan as well as the one-off T20 International (T20I) against Namibia.

Quinton de Kock has been added to both T20I squads as well as the ODI squad. The 32-year-old wicketkeeper, who retired from 50-over cricket at the conclusion of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, has reversed his retirement, citing his desire to represent the Proteas across both white-ball formats.

His franchise T20 career was also dwindling

He was looking worse than Rizwan in the CPL. That’s how poor he had been.

Clearly he needs to keep his career choices open lol
 
This thing about retiring at the age of 31-32 to play Franchise cricket to the max…

It won’t work I think. You will lose the quality of your skills if you cut off your international standard playing facilities.

QDQ has proven this.
 
Good news for international cricket. He is a good player when on song.

QDK can play international and still make a comfortable living playing franchise. He didn't need to retire.
 
Great to see him back, an all-time great.

The temptation of playing a World Cup on home soil next year was too much for him to resist.

Probably realized you need to be an active international player to be amongst the most in demand.
His retirement seemed pretty premature.
Not everyone can fetch the bags the likes of Rusell, Narine, AB, Faf etc can.
Needs to play without any baggage that comes alongside playing for SA. Hopefully he'd shaken that off this time.
 
Good to see he reversed his decision. He is a good player. He belongs in international cricket (not trashy franchise leagues).
 
These players are making a mockery out of retirement lol. Come and go as they please
