Khawaja, Starc, Wahab attain career-best rankings; Rahul, Nair make huge gains

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja’s maiden 10-wicket match haul against England in Chennai has propelled him to second position behind teammate and India’s star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Jadeja’s performance has earned him 66 points and brought him within eight points of Ashwin.

This is just the second time the top two spots in the MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for Test Bowlers have been occupied by India players, with the pair emulating left-arm spinner Bishan Singh Bedi and leg-spinner Bhagwath Chandrasekhar, who were ranked one and two in 1974.

Jadeja grabbed 10-154 in the final Test and finished with 26 wickets in the five-match series while Ashwin ended with 28 wickets as India completed a 4-0 series victory, culminating with an innings and 75 runs win in Chennai.

Jadeja, who leapfrogged Josh Hazlewood, James Anderson, Dale Steyn and Rangana Herth, has also gained one place to reach a career-best third rank in the list of all-rounders, also led by Ashwin.

Australia pace bowler Mitchell Starc is another one to rise in the rankings as he has moved up two slots to a career-best sixth position after taking seven wickets in the first Test against Pakistan in Brisbane, which his team won by 39 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Pace bowlers Ishant Sharma of India (up two places to 23rd rank), Wahab Riaz of Pakistan (up two places to a career-best 24th rank) and Australia’s Jackson Bird (up five places to 48th) are the others to make upward movements.

In the MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for Test Batsmen, India’s Lokesh Rahul and Karun Nair have made huge gains. Rahul’s knock of 199 has helped him gain 29 slots to reach a career-best 51st position while Nair’s unbeaten 303 in only his third Test innings has lifted him 122 places to 55th position.

Pakistan’s Younus Khan has moved up one place to eighth position, Azhar Ali has gained one slot to reach 16th rank, while Asad Shafiq has moved up five places to 20th rank after scoring two and 137 in Brisbane. Australia batsman Usman Khawaja has reached a career-best 18th rank after knocks of four and 74.

South Africa v Sri Lanka:

South Africa takes on Sri Lanka on home soil in a three-Test series starting on December 26 with the chance of going up to second or third position in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings led by India with 120 points and with Australia on 105 points. The rankings will, however, depend on the outcome of an ongoing series between Australia and Pakistan which ends before this series.

The following are the South Africa v Sri Lanka permutations:

· South Africa wins 3-0: South Africa 107, Sri Lanka 92

· South Africa wins 2-0: South Africa 105, Sri Lanka 93

· South Africa wins 1-0 or 2-1: South Africa 104, Sri Lanka 94

· Drawn series: South Africa 101, Sri Lanka 97

· Sri Lanka wins 3-0: Sri Lanka 102, South Africa 95

· Sri Lanka wins 2-0: Sri Lanka 101, South Africa 96

· Sri Lanka wins 1-0 or 2-1: Sri Lanka 99, South Africa 98

The Test table is updated at the end of the series, while the ODI and T20I team rankings are updated after each match.

Series schedule:

26-30 December – 1st Test, Port Elizabeth

2-6 January – 2nd Test, Cape Town

12-16 January – 3rd Test, Johannesburg

Ravi Jadeja may end up with ATG bowling stats

he doesnt play outside india much anyway for the stats to be ruined

Not happening.

It may very well happen as he often takes out the best player from the opposition. Clarke, ABD and Cook for instance suffered at his hands. Except him to trouble Smith as well. Higher ranked the batsman, more points for the bowler, rt?

Although not saying that this will happen.

dont think so man

i think all wickets count same

Wonder if he is moved up in the all rounder category as well, had decent two tests with the bat.Ash is out of 900 point range ,that is so hard to keep, congrats to Smith on being well above 900.

Nope he is right:

For a bowler, the factors are:

Wickets taken and runs conceded
Ratings of the batsmen dismissed (at present, the wicket of Kumar Sangakkara is worth more than that of Makhaya Ntini – but if Ntini's rating improves, the value of his wicket will increase accordingly)
The level of run-scoring in the match; bowling figures of 3-50 in a high-scoring match will boost a bowler’s rating more than the same figures in a low-scoring match
Heavy workload; bowlers who bowl a large number of overs in the match get some credit, even if they take no wickets;
The result. Bowlers who take a lot of wickets in a victory receive a bonus. That bonus will be higher for highly rated opposition teams

Yes but that doesn't necessarily mean he would take all the top blokes everytime,Smith isn't going to be any pushover.

wow thats actually pretty cool

ive always though that the player rankings are a good judge & by and large reflect the reality. like the top 6 currently doubt anyone can have a doubt over that. or bowling over the past 5-6 years same thing a few anomalies notwithstanding

no wonder! it makes sense!

Rare sight indeed.

Jaddu has a real chance to get to number 1.

Though Ash would be annoyed he missed out his 5th MOS award on a row. Hehe.

So will be a fun contest.

Jadeja is just 8 points behind Ashwin , i never knew that once Bedi and Chandra help Top 2 bowling spots.

Looks like the saying bowler wins matches in tests still holds true, wonder if ICC introduces Test championship then batsmen will have more of a say in setting up draws and advancing, anyone has any idea how draw would work incase test championship is introduced by 2019?

HTB's who are boring to watch as well much prefer Mishra

Good stuff from these two. I don't think any two Pakistani bowlers have ever topped the ICC rankings. Has any team ever had three bowlers in the top three?

I think the last test match pretty much puts the "Useless darter" & "take wickets only on turners" arguments to rest for good !!

I read that in this series....

7 catches/stumpings missed off Ash (actually 8...that person forgot to include Parthiv's drops off Bairstow in 2nd innings Mumbai)
4 catches/stumpings missed off Jaddu

All different batsmen.

As for others...7 were missed of Umesh...3 off Shami...1 each of Jayant and Mishra.

Wow Yasir has slid down the tables a lot. Deserves to go up more in my opinion but he needs to pick up more wickets.

Disgrace to see Jadejea at no #2.

Why the hate? He has improved a lot and just doesn't dart in the ball. Moreover he is naturally gifted with variations which is why he is continuously able to fox top batsmen. Warne rated him even before he became the SIR!

Cricket is not only played by boring spinners who are beastly at home like Ashwin and Jadeja  what an ignorant post from you

Agreed man. Disappointed to see these two guys on top. As usual, these rankings turn out to be shoddy as hell.

And yet, you must find Yasir very exciting even though he averages near 50 outside Asia. :yasir

What about Amir? Boring or exciting?

People rating Ashwin higher than Yasir :))) :))) :)))

What next? Rahane is better than Shafiq? :)))

Well deserved ranking IMO..Time for celebrations...!!!

Just about time when SA reaches no.2 by defeating SL 3-0..

Totally agree mate, without these rank turners these spinners have proven to be god awful away from home maybe Jadeja has not been so bad in comparison to Ashwin whom he has often been picked over :akhtar but both certainly do not deserve to be no.1 and no.2 maybe ICC were drunk over the holiday season, solid explanation

So what's the hypothetical average? Why there is no thread about it?

So what's the hypothetical average? Why there is no thread about it?

Hypothetical averages are only for ATG's like Amir and Yasir who bowl well but somehow average higher.

Also hypothetical averages can be made for ATG's like Asif who sit in Pakistan but are considered better than Starc and Hazelwood.

When it comes to average cricketers like Ashwin and Jadeja, we must consider real averages because that's their true reflection.

However, if they somehow pick up truckload of wickets, one must factor the pitch conditions as well.

Hehe....no hypothetical average.

Just reflection of how good Indian bowlers did and how much Indian fielding has to improve.

Poor Yadav was the most affected. Raved by all but poor averages just cos our fielders dropped so many. Deserved a 5fer in Rajkot.

Probably the first time 3 spinners are ranked 1,2 and 3. Rank 1 and 2 if fine, but Ashwin and Jadeja having a combined average of 40 in 2016. That puts too much pressure on opposition.

I doubt that next year rankings will see 3 spinners on top.

However, if they somehow pick up truckload of wickets, one must factor the pitch conditions as well.

Well, playing at home helped them sure, but they have bowled very well on flat tracks as well. So it's not just them picking wickets on rank turners. But both adding runs helped India immensely. I think Ashwin has bailed Indians many times in tough match situations and Jadeja added vital runs as well. Over all contributions with bat and ball made it a huge one. They won't be that successful when playing outside for sure, but they have done very well last year.

I think Yasir has bowled pretty well despite averaging north of 35 in 2016. Some of it is due to him not being effective on flat tracks and some is due to defensive use of Yasir by Pakistan. Anyway, Pacers should soon take few spots in top. It's rare to see 3 spinners on top.

Wow! Umesh was really unlucky.

Where did you get these numbers from?
I wonder if there is a stat by the person who actually dropped the chances. Parthiv will figure pretty frequently there

Tbh Englsnd missed a bucketload of chances whenever I was watching

Both teams missed equal number of chances.. in England's case it would be more expensive as their bowlers won't be creating as many

Lol averages 50 outside of Asia but played a part in winning 2 games away from Asia. How many games has Ashwin won for India in Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia?

Ps England tour was Yasirs 1st test series outside of Asia, Indian fans give Ashwin an excuse for poor performances outside of Asia that it's his 1st tour so Yasir deserves the same judgment but he's still won 2 games for us in England.

WI is out of Asia too, a team whom Pakistan dropped a test against recently and have never won away.

Any matches or series where Ashwin performs don't count. Average bowlers like him only deserve to get rated on their poor performances.

Had the wickets been spin friendly, both of these would have got 35 wickets a piece @ an average of 15 odd,BCCI missed a trick by dishing out non turners IMO

That post by Zak Fan was in response to a troll comment bro. He didn't bring Yasir up.

Lots of trolling going on in this thread.

Dale Steyn there at 4..

Does he ever goes out of 5?

When the king is ill, everyone comes out fighting.

With all due respects to Ashwin, Jaddu, Herath, Anderson, Yasir all whom were No 1 - No 5 recently...these are all pretenders to the throne. Their rankings are heavily dependent on where they play.

Dale Steyn is the true king. The greatest bowler of our generation (one of the top 5 pacers ever...maybe top 3). Impact king.

Hopefully one day, with enough development, we Indians could hope Ash is called as number 1 without any of the "in these conditions" asterix.

Ash could have easily got 35 wickets even in these pitches with some luck...but not meant to be.

Imagine what would happen if we roll out 4 pukka rank turners for Aus...... :ashwin :stokes :kp :broad

Same logic can prove that Ishant >> Amir away.

The fact is, Ashwin never got the same dry wickets in England like Yasir did. On typical English tracks, Yasir went for something like 250/0..right?

Performed in 2 out of 4 games though

It's an impressive achievement on both their part, but I can't help but wonder that they'l probably get bashed outside Asia. Especially Jadeja.

Lol. Lot of sour grapes here.

The quality of spin bowling may be at an all time low but no other spin attack in the world comes close to these two.

Nopes. See the SA- IND series few years back.Jadeja took a 7-fer in Durban ! Jadeja can keep it super tight. He wont take these many wickets for sure. But he'll at least keep one end tied down. That was why Dhoni dropped Ash for him in a few overseas tests.

That was a 6 wicket haul. And if you look at Jadeja's career he has only played 6 out of his 25 Test matches outside India. In which his stats are collectively quite poor excluding that one 6-fer against South Africa. Almost same goes for Ashwin, who has only played 14 out of his 44 Tests outside Asia, in which his performances have been quite woeful -- barring the recent series against the West Indies. So needless to say they both are yet to prove themselves outside Asia. But hey, as long as they have the No. 1 and No. 2 ranks who cares right?
