The Cricket Advisory Committee comprising Ms Sulakshana Naik and Mr RP Singh on Wednesday unanimously appointed Mr Rahul Dravid as the Head Coach of Team India (Senior Men). The former India captain will take charge from the upcoming home series against New Zealand.

The BCCI had invited applications for the said position on October 26 to appoint Mr Ravi Shastri’s successor, whose term gets over after the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup.

The Board congratulates Mr Shastri (former Team Director & Head Coach), Mr B. Arun (Bowling Coach), Mr R. Sridhar (Fielding Coach) and Mr Vikram Rathour (Batting Coach) on a successful tenure. Under Shastri, the Indian Cricket Team adopted a bold and fearless approach and performed creditably both in home and away conditions. India climbed to the top position in the Test format and made it to the final of the inaugural World Test Championship in England.

India became the first Asian team to win a Test series in Australia (2018-19) and followed it with another series win in 2020-21. India were also the first team to win all 5 T20Is in a bilateral series when it blanked New Zealand 5-0. Under Mr Shastri and his team’s guidance, India won all their seven Test series at home.

Mr Sourav Ganguly, President, BCCI said: The BCCI welcomes Rahul Dravid as the Head Coach of India’s senior men team. Rahul has had an illustrious playing career and is one of the greats of the game. He has also served Indian cricket as Head of National Cricket Academy (NCA) with distinction. Rahul’s effort at the NCA has nurtured several young cricketing talents who have gone on to represent the country at the international stage. I am hopeful that his new stint will take Indian cricket to new heights.

Mr Jay Shah, Honorary Secretary, BCCI said: There is no better person than Rahul Dravid and I am delighted to see him being appointed as the Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. With two World Cups scheduled to take place in the next two years, it is important to have a seamless transition, and the former India captain is the right man for the job. Having provided the much-needed direction to NCA and overseen the progression of the boys at India U-19 and India A level, we believe this is also a natural progression for him as a coach. I have no doubt that under him, the Indian team will dominate in all formats. The Board will soon make appointments of other coaching staff, who will support the Head Coach in jointly achieving our targets.

Mr Rahul Dravid, Head Coach, Team India said: It is an absolute honour to be appointed as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team and I am really looking forward to this role. Under Mr Shastri, the team has done very well, and I hope to work with the team to take this forward. Having worked closely with most of the boys either at NCA, U19 and India A setup, I know they have the passion and desire to improve every day. There are some marquee multi-team events in the next two years, and I look forward to working with the players and the support staff to achieve our potential.

So even the BCCI has admitted it hay they will not reach the semis

Shastri will be missed as far as test cricket is concerned.

Good news for Indian cricket, but bad news for some of the show-ponies in the Indian team.

Would have preferred someone like Tom Moody instead. Rahul is good for under 19 and India A sides. :inti

Now many people with goldfish memories in media will start calling for Misbah / Younis to be re-appointed coach for our Pakistan Cricket team

"Dekhein, India apne seniors ki respect karta hai; isliye Dravid ko coach banaya.. Hum goron ko lekar aa gaye"

There is no better man to be at the helm for India. It is the correct choice after India poor showing at the current T20 WC.

I think Dravid is a fantastic choice and the right person to take team India forward.
The younger players will thrive under his guidance.

Dravid put the hard yards in with the u19s

Maybe Misbah goes this way too. He shouldn’t be completely let go of, just needs to do it the right way.

Someone like Dravid is more suited to the U19, A Team and Domestic sides. He will be a misfit for the national team where he will have to put up with Prima donnas.

Dravid is a no nonsense gentleman. He will likely bring an era of less attitude and more performance

I'm telling you this, Kohli will stepped down the captaincy in ODIs too before Dravid's joining as head coach.

Good move. Some of the arrogance seemed to be reflected in performance lately. This will bring them down tk earth. Also good for impending transition of next generation of talent as in few years some current stars will likely need to make way.

Always thought Dravid would make a very good coach. I think this is a good move by India.

I have a nagging suspicion that Dravid's coaching tenure will be a bit similar to his captaincy stint, he'll develop young players such as Shaw and Gill into international stars and promote some other talented young players for the future as well, however, results won't be consistent.

India will benefit in the long-run but there will be some pain for the casual observer.

Yes, Misbah just needs to do it the right way.

Put him on the panel to interview the current Pak U19 coach, that should get the lad going :yk

Dravid is an excellent choice, how he handles the Rockstars will be interesting

I can see Dravid definitely improving our traditional weakness against swing/seam bowling in places like England and NZ. He was one of the best ever players of swing bowling and he had great records in both those countries. I think he will be great in ironing out technical chinks in youngsters like Gill, Shaw, etc.

But I'm not sure if he'll ever be as great a man motivator as Shastri was. For all his criticisms, Shastri was the kind of guy you needed in your camp after defeats like the 36 all out, Shastri was a miracle man with some lows in ICC tournaments, Dravid will probably in the John Wright/Gary Kirsten mould as a coach.

We need to develop an entire generation from here on.

Shastri wasn't going to be the man for that, Dravid is.

If ever there was a template for what you need to do to be considered for national teams head coach, this is it . . . brilliant! my favorite Indian cricketer ever.

Compare this to the attitude and entitlement of our ex-stars . . . .

True. I cant see how he will handle the player power rampant in our teams.
He was doing a fantastic job at U19 NCA and the India a sides.
I'd have gone for a complete outsider like moody, mahela, mike hesson.
wish the bcci also kept bharat arun and sridhar in their respecive roles. If arun has to go, i'd go for gillespie or craig mcdermott.
the bcci surely knows how to mess up big time.

Dravid has a personality that can turn Indian team into a team like Australia was in the 90s . Ruthless yet not over the top rockstars like current group

Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-Ul-Haq feels that the relations between Virat Kohli, Ravi Shastri may have turned frosty ahead of the T20 World Cup 2021, which resulted in India’s early exit from the ICC tournament. The legendary former Pakistan batter reckons the announcement of Kohli stepping down as India's T20 captain after the World Cup was something the BCCI and the team could have done without.

"I said this even before the match, that this statement of leaving captaincy after the tournament… it is not good. You have to play a big event and this shows that there is pressure on you and you are not comfortable. They all knew that after this tournament, Shastri was to get replaced by Dravid," Inzamam said on ARY News.

Inzamam weighed in further on the matter, pointing out that the news of Shastri's impending departure and Kohli stepping down as the team's T20I captain indicated that not all was right within the Indian camp, including relations between the captain-coach duo and the BCCI.

"This should not happen before a big event. Your authority gets challenged. And this means that relations between Kohli, Shastri and board were not great. If India were to win the T20 World Cup, would they have removed the captain and coach? There was some problem between them," said the former Pakistan batter.

Inzamam spoke about Shaheen Afridi's destructive spell against India, which saw him return 3/31, including the wickets of openers KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma and captain Virat Kohli. Lauding Pakistan's pace battery, Inzamam said the country's pacers are of the quality that they can dismantle any batting unit in the world.

"Our fast bowlers always stamp their authority on India. We have always had a good pace battery. Every team is a little apprehensive about facing Pakistan’s bowling," said Inzamam.

I'm a huge fan of Dravid, but thinking back to his eventful stint as captain, I'm not sure if his rather mild-mannered style is enough to keep the more eccentric characters in the dressing room fully in line. He will need to use his experience from that role in this new position, and be more assertive when people start playing games under his nose and trying to pull the wool.

Good appointment perhaps.

He always seemed quite methodical and his type of personality suits coaching.

Dravid's success will depend on how quickly he is able to jettison the senior players from the side and promote young players. If the selectors aren't supportive, this stint will be a failure.

India's newly appointed head coach Rahul Dravid once again won the hearts of cricket fans with a touching gesture after the first Test between India and New Zealand at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. Dravid donated a massive amount of ₹35000 to the stadium's groundsmen led by Shiv Kumar.

Dravid was impressed by the quality of the pitch and decided to reward the men working behind the scenes in Kanpur. India played out a dramatic final day draw vs New Zealand in Kanpur to begin the two-match series with a draw.

"We would like to make an official announcement. Mr Rahul Dravid has paid Rs 35,000 personally to our groundsmen," the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) was quoted saying by PTI after the match ended.

The pitch turned out a near-perfect wicket for Test cricket with something on offer for everyone. New Zealand fast-bowlers Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson's impressive show exhibited quality pace bowling was rewarded on the track while Indian spinners showed that like any typical sub-continent track, there was a lot of turn and bounce on offer.

Talking about the match, New Zealand held their nerve and showed great resilience to ensure a draw. The Black Cap's number 11 pair of Ajaz Patel and Rachin Ravindra batted with extreme grit in fading light to deny India a victory on the final day.

Earlier in the day, New Zealand's opener Tom Latham and nightwatchman William Somerville managed to play out the entire morning session without losing a single wicket. Latham scored his second half-century of the match in the process.

Later Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin bought India right back into the game as the visitors struggled to find answers to India's spin-attack. Jadeja took four wickets while Ashwin chipped in with three scalps.

The teams go into the second and final game of the series with the series level. The match will take place at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium where regular skipper Virat Kohli will return to lead the team.

This was Dravid's first Test match since taking over Indian cricket's top-most job. Dravid replaced Ravi Shastri earlier this month after the latter's term came to an end after the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Not sure if this is a good practice. Is it ethical for a home captain, coach to give money to curators for preparing pitches? That is tantamount to encourage pitch fixing

It was done “after” the match.. also it ended up costing India the match in someways.

His first big test. Can he bench Rahane and Ishant for next Test? If not NZ may even with Wagner coming back.

Yeah I'm uncomfortable with this.

I think its common but not highlighted. Have read before.Key is to do it after the game.

Maybe the name 'Dravid' made them announce it.

I think Dhoni also once gifted some money to an Indian curator.

He has rewarded them . I believe groundsmen pay is quite less . This is good gesture and would encourage them to prepare more sporty wickets

Yes that is one big reason. Nothing wrong as long as its after the match and no upcoming match on same venue

Someone like Dravid is perfectly suited for working with the U16, U19, A team and Academies. He was always a humble, reserved but professional individual. Indian Cricket in the last 5 years has always been guided by aggression whereas Dravid will always advocate a reserved balanced approach. He is going to face a lot of criticism in the media and among ex players which is going to ruin his legacy.

I believe he had initially told the BCCI that he was not interested in being the head coach of the Indian team and wanted to carry on working at his previous role but Ganguly pressed him to accept the challenge. I think he made a mistake, he should have carried on his good work at the grass root level and leave the Indian National team to some other candidate

I agree with this post. Dravid is taking a big risk by exposing himself in this role. But he might surprise us/me and be a huge success. There is a certain measure of influence and discipline that he needs to win back from Virat Kohli, who is understandably a huge figure & this helps India in many ways -- although he perhaps holds a bit too much power in the setup currently.

Dravid will one day be the Director of Cricket operations for Bcci. A post specifically created for him.

and that was at Kanpur too

but there match lasted 3 days :msd
lol, shows you the priorities of both.

Personally I find nothing in Kanpur pitch for its curator to be rewarded by Dravid. Of course, you can reward him as these guys are poor and don't earn much from this job but certainly not for the kind of pitch he prepared for last test.

It's been a very limp display by the Indian team over the last two Tests in South Africa, much worse than any overseas series India played under Shastri. It was clear that heads fell quickly and there was a lack of belief when the team was under pressure.

I expected the intensity levels to fall under Dravid, and it won't be long before people understand that the role of a modern day international coach is little to do with technical competence.

Dravid is risking his legacy in this role. He should have continued at the U19, A team, Academies where his utility was perfect. The head coach role is unforgiving

I have huge respect for Dravid. However I don't feel the head coach role of Indian team is his cup of tea. In today's Indian world this role would be suited for someone with strong personality to tackle media and concerns. The IPL inspired cricketers already come through with a lot of confidence and self-believe hence the coach should demonstrate more of these traits which unfortunately Dravid doesn't do.

Dravid should stick with help u19 cricketers in the country. That way he would be in more assurance and control of his setup and in a way would be able to contribute far more to Indian cricket in general whilst staying in the background. I want him to have his legacy and respect intact.

Well as great as Dravid is, he will have to answer questions regarding continous selection of Pujara and Rahane.

Picking Vihari ahead of Iyer.

Why Dravid and not Kohli? Isn't Kohli an all powerful captain who picks his eleven? Has he not been backing Pujara and Rahane?

Everyone knows David's nature and preference to stay in the back seat and avoid the lime light

The entire team management plus the selectors have to answer.

Dravid cannot avoid culpability.

So far

Won - ODI series against Sri Lanka
Lost - T20 series against Sri Lanka
Lost - Test series against SA

He will have to, if those two get selected for the Sri Lankan series.

He's in the clear as of now regarding that.

Not the ideal start for Dravid (series loss against South Africa).

But, I think he can be a good coach. He is a methodical and calm guy.

Dravid is soon going to realize the position even with its $1.17 million per annum salary is not worth it considering the amount of criticism that comes with the role.

He has full support from board unlike Shastri.

What did i tell you regarding Thakur and Bhuvi?

Watch them play throughout the series while Saini sits on the bench.

they're done...

this indian team looks different than the one from 2-3 years ago

KL Rahul is not captaincy material.

This team is done, Dravid will probably take this team to 90's team where all are nice guys and don't talk anything , he is not suitable for senior team coach he should have stick with junior where he hone their skills , here man management is required, u can see from the way kohli was booted out and of all people KL Rahul is chosen as captain who is not qualified to captain a school team ,he lacks everything that need to called a simple captain
And he is now captain of India, I think revolution started by Ganguly and going to end by himself by his stupid Ego, under Ravi / Kohil even though we never win any ICC TOURNAMENT alteast we achieved many things but under dravid if we managed to win hom series that itself is going to be huge achievement
Just think a bunch of jokers called selectors selecting players like Kumar , dhawan , chalal , jayant yadav all have passed their sell date 🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦

Especially Rahul who refused to bowl iyer eventhough he is selected as all rounder and saving his friend pandya spot by not allowing anybody to perform , Most probably next match surya will come in his place we continue to play 5 bowler untill he is fit

Lol..this Rahul-Rahul & Co:)))

Rahul dravid is another Misbhah. It looks like we're going back to 80's.

Surya Kumar is our Key player in middle, and we need to give him as many as chances before next wc. What is the point of keep warming the bench?

Who is the brain behind Ashwin's LOI comeback?

Who the hell is this Venkatesh Iyer, on what basis he got selected for ODI's?

Shreyas Iyer has been demoted to below while he is performing well in 2nd down, why?

Ganguly and Dravid destroying Indian Team and taking to new lows.

Must admit this is the flattest looking Indian Cricket Team I have seen in a long time.

Can't say that I am not enjoying this, all the folks that were baying for blood when Shastri was in charge because he didn't conform to their idea of a successful coach deserve to see the decline under Dravid.

It's recognition of why the mental and psychological aspect of sport is fundamentally much more critical than any technical competence at the highest level.

Well said!! Cricket is all mental. Like once Dennis Lillee said 90% mental, 10% skill. This is why there should be no compromise on fitness.

Actually Kohli survived a bit longer as captain of his team because Shastri was able to have talks with his players to make them realize that there is nothing bigger than playing for your country. In Subcontinent, Captains and coaches need to be more like father figure. Like Dhoni and Shastri.

Shastri played a big role in making his team believe that they could beat Australia in Australia without one of their main batsman.

This is why England need a new coach also…

Not Dravid's fault. Dravid just started in the midst of all the drama in between players, selectors and Ganguly. This is something that started long ago and no coach would help you succeed in a situation like the one they are experiencing these days. Dravid is a solid coach who should be given at least 2 years to fix this mess.

No honeymoon period for Dravid.

He's come in at a sensitive and unstable time in Indian cricket.

He'll come good once things settle down.

I hope I might be wrong, but never hire recent ex cricketer as coach/selector in India/Pakistan
There are few things to consider :
1) Well known ex cricketers have big ego, some are calm like (Dravid, Misbah) others are strict headmaster (Kumble, Waqar Younis) and others are bombastic like (Shoaib Akhtar, Raci Shahstri etc.)
2) I still days of Mickey Arthur; we were seeing something different on all occassions; no politics was there

to BCCI--- Tom Moody is keep on trying to become BCCI coach, try to hire him before there is another fallout like Kumble - Virat Kohli

Shastri got along with Kohli because both are managed by same management company , and Ganguly's problem is for some time in last few years, Kohli only selected players who are represented by his management co.

Didn't Kevin Pietersen say that if you can't get along with Dravid then you are indeed struggling in life

I don't think so, Dravid is partly to blame for the breakdown in relationship with Kohli. He's not suited to be in a leadership position with this set of players.

Dravid needs a clean slate and an influx of a lot of youth players, which basically means that India are rebuilding and results over the next 2-3 years don't matter.

That's not necessarily a bad thing for Indian cricket, but it should be a very specific remit for Dravid, otherwise he's out of his depth in this environment.

I think he will be made sacrificial lamb when the real cause of recent decline is fallout of Kohli with BCCI/ Gangualy.

Dravid is the one Ind guy that you dont mind succeeding, But on the other hand he is the coach of our arch rivals.

Would have preferred someone like Tom Moody instead. Rahul is good for under 19 and India A sides. :inti

Was I wrong? Rahul Dravid will find it hard to control some of these arrogant heads in the dressing room. The only thing I am worried about is if Dravid has a bad coaching tenure with Indian team then I hope he doesn't give up coaching altogether. I want him as Indian U19 coach. This is where he can make the impact. Rohit-Moody combo would have been brilliant here. :inti
