Rangana Herath - The Destroyer

Good to see herath is still doing the business for SL, Congrats on hat trick.

Current spinners are all horses for the courses

Average under 28, 29/7 - 5/10 wickets (probably it'll end like 30/8, after this Test),almost 5 wickets/Test - he is indeed a modern great if not ATG. That 29/7 in 80 Tests is almost equal to Warne's in 145+ Tests. I think, Herath is much under rated for the image of Murali in SRL cricket. He is almost 40, therefore at least for 10 years they should have bowled together - that should have reduced Murali's wickets & increased Herath's wicket.

I don't know how long he has left - his knees are a wreck, but I love the guy. Clever bowler who was in the shadow of Murali for a long time but finally getting the plaudits he deserves.

SRL are very reliant on him, hope he gets 400 wickets before retirement.

ajmal was legendary in all formats. herath is great test bowler only. but yes miles better than ashwin jadeja etc.

ATG is always just based on tests.and defititely we are discussing here his tests acheivements...ajmal is no where near him ...even he has less than 200 wickets in odi.....herath is wonderful in tests and he has performed everwhere and dont forget he wasnt chucking..

he was cleared twice in 2009 and 2012 so i don't agree with this chucking business. rules were changed in 2014 and it was not his fault. greatness is not based on tests anymore. it is an outdated format.

@MHHS please eloborate..ajmal is far behind for me but modern fans like me..lolz ,are overhyping odi ...though ajmal was good in odi just for 4 years but this man has been excellent in tests for almost 10 years....

and he was banned then.aso his effective time where he did well was not more than five years and herath has been consistent performer for almost more than ten years..

10 more wickets needed for Herath’s 400. I think he’ll just fall short during this series. Should get there in SL’s next test series though.

100 of the 400 against Pakistan.

Humnai kia bigara hai boss tumhara?

Didn’t think he’d get to 400 during this series, never mind this test. What a legend.

quite an amazing achievent for a man who didnt become a regular till he was almost 30 (perhaps over)

Legend and a ghost that has always haunted Pakistan team

I'll be the happiest guy when this man retires

First left arm spinner to get so many wickets apparently!

Vettori has 362 test wickets so every Herath wicket for a while has been a new record for a SLA bowler ;)

15 more wickets and he goes past Wasim for most wickets by a leftie, then after that the next target is breaking into the top ten test wicket takers of all time (Steyn is on 417, Pollock on 421)

Sp why didnt he and Murali play together a lot esp in home matches

its not like going in with 2 spinners in SL wasnt an option

He was also helped by the fact that he bowled to batsmen who are clueless against quality spin.

I think its just the psychological edge he has over us and just keeps coming back to haunt us.

Age is just a number, keep going Rangana! :salute

Legend.

How many times are we going to collapse in the 4th innings against this guy ?

I dont think he was good back then, sri lanka had spinners like Chandana, Dharmasena, Randiv, Mendis, Bandara and few others popped in and out.

Excellent bowler who exploited mentally weak and inept batting from pakistan.

Indian fans, we are having another India vs Sri Lanka tour starting...........NEXT MONTH including 3 Test, 5 Odis and 3 T20s :))) :))) :))). We'll see how our players deal with :herath

Warne has totally owned Pak team. Look at his S/R.

As one can see, Pakistan have played a big role in these spinners being regarded as all time great wicket takers. :srini :bm

Warne was useless against India. Thankfully for him, other teams were incompetent against him. :srini

Rather than give credit to your own batsmen for their prowess against spin, you would rather discredit the bowlers to run down other teams. Sad stuff. :inti

3rd best Test spinner in modern era after Warne and Murali. Carried a mediocre attack post Murali.

Saw the highlights. If they keep playing on the backfoot to Herath on a turner , result won't be different in the second test. Reason is most of them don't read him well when there is something in the pitch. You have to take him on the full. He is a class bowler. Pakistan has to find a way to neutralize him.

Sri Lanka became the first team to win a Test series against Pakistan in UAE and Rangana Herath wants to end another drought. Sri Lanka tour India for a three-match Test series beginning November 16 and Herath wants to win a Test match here. Sri Lanka have never won a Test match in India and Australia.

“It’s one of my dreams. How wonderful it would be to win a Test match in India as we have never won there before,” Herath was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

“The series win in Pakistan has given us lot of confidence. That winning mentality is important. If we show the same fighting spirit that we showed against Pakistan, we can win in India,” Herath added.

During the series against Pakistan, Herath played a crucial role by taking 16 wickets in two matches. He is expected to play a key role in the series against India as well. But, Herath know that India won’t be an easy opponent to beat. They are number one team in the world and have some of the best batsmen.

“They have [a] lot of experience. They have an excellent first-class structure in India. If you take the Ranji Trophy, it prepares their players to play those big innings. It teaches their bowlers to think of different options when bowling on flat wickets. Whereas we don’t have those challenges. Only at ‘A’ team cricket, our players are prepared for those challenges,” he said.

India recently beat Sri Lanka 3-0 in three-match Test series Sri Lanka. Herath said that they all struggled in that series as they did not break the partnerhsips.

“The India series at home, I wasn’t able to take wickets. All of us struggled. We were not able to break the partnerships and they went onto post 600-plus runs and from there on it was difficult for us. We missed a few chances as well. We need to plan as to what we have to do to get those 20 wickets,” concluded Herath.

At this stage of his career, he is pretty much a Pakistan/minnows specialist.

The black magic that helped Sri Lanka win their test series against Pakistan is not helping against India.:angelo

On Rangana Herath's 42nd birthday, we take a look back at some of the left-arm spinner's most spectacular performances for Sri Lanka.

6/43 v Pakistan, Abu Dhabi, 1st Test, 2017

Herath passed the 400-wicket milestone in the Abu Dhabi Test against Pakistan in 2017, the only left-arm spinner to breach the milestone to dateHerath passed the 400-wicket milestone in the Abu Dhabi Test against Pakistan in 2017, the only left-arm spinner to breach the milestone to date
This was a classic Abu Dhabi pitch. Little happened for the bowlers on the first three days and then, without warning, the pitch began to take turn – sharp turn. Pakistan bowled Sri Lanka out for 138 in their second innings, courtesy of a Yasir Shah five-for and set themselves a mere 136 for victory. It wasn't long before Rangana Herath proved that the ask was going to be tough for Pakistan as he had Sami Aslam caught at slip for 2 with one that kept straight.

A 42-run stand between Haris Sohail and Sarfaraz Ahmed threatened to take the game away from Sri Lanka, but Herath destroyed Pakistan's hopes by removing both batsmen in the space of five overs. He then made light work of the tail to finish with 11 for the match and earn his side victory by 21 runs.

Herath also became the first and, so far, only left-arm spinner to pass 400 Test wickets during the course of the spell.

5/3 v New Zealand, Chattogram, T20 World Cup, 2014

Most of Herath's best work came in the longer format, but this performance against New Zealand in their virtual knock-out match in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2014 was as good as any. With Sri Lanka having posted just 119, Herath made an impact with little time to waste.

A piece of alert fielding from him gave Sri Lanka their first breakthrough as Martin Guptill paid for attempting a hasty run. Later that same over, he coaxed Brendon McCullum out of his crease and got the ball to rip past his outside edge to have him stumped. He then demolished New Zealand's middle order with conventional variations and discipline.

The Black Caps were able to only score three runs off his 3.3 overs and conceded five wickets to him as they folded for 60.

7/48 v India, Galle, 1st Test, 2015

After conceding a 192-run first-innings lead, the first part of Sri Lanka's recovery in this thrilling Test came from a breath-taking 162* from Dinesh Chandimal to set India a challenging target of 176 in Galle.

Herath soon started ripping the ball square to chip away at India's batting order. His mastery of conditions at a venue where he eventually finished with 102 victims was for all to see. No batsman seemed to have the answers to the questions he was asking of them with Ajinkya Rahane's 36 being the top score for the visitors as they were bundled out for 112.

9/127 v Pakistan, Colombo (SSC), 2nd Test, 2014

This spell from Herath was as much a testament to his persistence as his skill. On a pitch that was still pretty fresh, he kept putting the ball in the right areas and was unafraid to toss it up against batsmen who were proficient against spin bowling, including Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq. As a consequence, the left-arm spinner was a touch expensive at 3.82, but it brought him a career-best haul of nine wickets.

His ball to get rid of Sarfaraz, who was well-set at 103, was a thing of beauty as he made it dip prodigiously and then turn gently to find the outside edge of the attempted drive. In Pakistan's second innings, he took a five-for to seal a comfortable win for his team.

6/98 v South Africa, Colombo (SSC), 2nd Test, 2018

Even at 40, Herath was remarkably persistentEven at 40, Herath was remarkably persistent
This effort from Herath highlights how he retained his tenacity to send down over-after-over of high-quality bowling even at the age of 40. He bowled 32.5 overs out of the 86.5 that South Africa lasted in that innings and was able to retain his bite throughout. His ball to dismiss Theunis de Bruyn – South Africa's last hope in an improbable chase of 490 – for 101 was especially memorable: he got it to go on with the angle despite almost everything suggesting that it would turn away. One couldn't lay much blame on the batsman for shouldering arms.
