Here I have ranked all the major teams in terms of performance overall in this decade. Obviously, major test series wins away, WC victory, head-to-head bilateral records, WT20 performance, all have been taken.

1.India( 1WC, 1 CT, Test win in Australia, No. 1 test ranking for 4 years)

2.England (Finals WC(maybe winner)),test win in India/Aus/SA)

3.Australia (WC 2015, Test win in SA,No.1 test ranking)

4.South Africa (No.1 Test ranking for 2.5 years, Test wins in Australia,England, Good ODI record)

5.New Zealand (Test win in UAE, 2 WC finals)

6.Pakistan (CT win, Test series win in NZ, drawn in England)

7.Sri Lanka (1 WT20 win, SA series win, 1WC finals)

8.West Indies(2 WT20 win but poor Test/ODI performance home/away)

To be honest, no team had a consistent ranking. Every team went up and down.

I say England were the most consistent (even then they lost many key tournaments).

England have been a solid ODI team in last 3 years but before that they were just on par with minnows. Even if they win this WC, it can be argued that they are overall inferior to India in ODI cricket in this decade because India have won WC once and Champions Trophy once as well. Their ODI performance was great in both the halves. For England, it is one half and even then they didn't made it to CT final 2017 and don't have any CT win like India.

In tests, India have been top ranked from last 4 years and have a series win in Australia, Sri Lanka, West Indies and dominated teams at home. England have lost a lot at home and have suffered whitewashes in Australia.

1. India
2. Australia
3. England
4. ???
5. Sri Lanka
6. ????
7. West Indies

4th & 6th spot will either go to Pakistan or NZ depending upon the outcome of the final tomorrow.

Why Sri Lanka at 5? Because they won the WT20 in 2014 and won the test series in SA last year.

WI at number 7 because they won the WT20 in 2016.

And where goes South Africa?

You are correct. I have to give #1 to India.

However, India didn't dominate like Aussies did in 2000's and WI did in 80's. India were just relatively better than the rest.

It was a bit like 90's when no team truly dominated.

And where goes South Africa?

Would have to place them somewhere between number 4 and number 6 because unfortunately they have really underperformed in world tournaments.

In my opinion, even a runners up in a WC or CT would have placed them above SL at number 4 because they were the #1 test side in the initial years of the decade. But their second half have been quite lackluster.
