Steyn is the only one who is near perfect- an excellent record in the sub continent and the ability to rip through a line up anywhere

Anderson has a tendency to disappear from certain tournaments, but he was brilliant in India when England won there in 11, he is the best all round swing bowler in the world

Harris had injury issues but did well in the sub continent and could run through a side anywhere, he gets a 9 because he wasn't quite as destructive as Mitch or Steyn

Philander is the best seam bowler in the world but lack of wickets in the sub continent make it hard to give him a perfect score

Ditto for Broad

Mitch is the most destructive but didn't dominate in the sub continent so can't get a perfect score. Still, for a while, he looked like among the most dangerous bowlers ever.

Morkel is an immense underachiever, should have been the next Allan Donald, but just ended up being a good bowler.

Johnson was hardly a reverse swing bowler. And its not like Steyn hasn't benefited from his team mates messing with the ball.

People are underrating Philander, a bowling average of 21 isn't to be taken lightly. He may not be flashy but he gets the job done. Even in Asia, his record isn't bad, succeeding in both India and UAE in the few tests he had.

Best bowler from that lot easily after Steyn.

Hard to rate Harris who was injured too much and didn't even play 30 tests. Gun when he was available, but if he wasn't with the team most of the time, then his impact is limited. People use that excuse to bring down Akhtar which they should rightfully so, but Akhtar at least played near 50.

Well all I can say is if Anderson and Broad are rated 8/9 out of 10, then the likes of Marshall, Holding, Lillee, Imran, Wasim, Waqar, Ambrose, Donald would have to be at least 14/15 out of 15 , given the gulf in class.

No disrespect to these modern bowlers but today's standard of fast bowling compared to 80s and 90s is like comparing park/ club level cricket with international cricket.. eg, even club cricketers can take 300 wickets and break all time records if you rebrand club cricket as test cricket.

Mitchell Johnson either 5 or 10 depending on which one shows up

You could say that if one was to make 2 fast bowling attacks, each with four fast bowlers, how many/who from those listed in the OP would get ahead of any of those listed in bold in the post quoted above. I would say none.

Steyn can be argued to be better than all of them. I have only watched the last 4.probably would choose only wasim Bhai ahead of him

Agreed.

In my view you can't compare players from different eras based on statistics and averages, or records.. if we consider sportsmen like artists then you can only appreciate the skills, mastery and finest works of an artist. And on that criteria, anyone who saw the above mentioned ATG fast bowlers of the 80s and 90s eras at their peaks, will agree their skill levels and qualities as fast bowlers were far superior to modern day equivalents.

James Anderson and Broad might between them end up taking twice the number of test wickets as Holding and Marshall, but to even think these are fast bowlers in the same class is laughable.

Morne a 9 with 8 5-fers in 83 matches?

If Morne is a 9, then SA would have been an undisputed team given they had four great batsmen and 2 more great bowlers over the years and some more good players.

Also, Johnson a 9?:rabada2

Johnson 9 bcz of that Ashes series, he will remembered for that for ages.

Morne 9 bcz he played a brilliant support role, just like in a movie, side role is as important as hero's role, maybe if i wouldn't have been morne, philander, steyn and rabada might have never been the same.
