"Ready to challenge any cleric who claims the democratic system is allowed under Islam" : Abdul Aziz

ISLAMABAD: Maulana Abdul Aziz on Friday dodged the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Administration and was able to deliver a sermon at Lal Masjid.

Maulana Abdul Aziz lambasted all state institutions and said the judiciary was corrupt because it was the remnant of British colonialism as was democracy.

“Democracy is un-Islamic. I am ready to challenge any cleric who claims the democratic system is allowed under Islam,” he said.

Challenges clerics to prove democracy is allowed under Islam

He criticised the incumbent rulers, said Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari were corrupt and without naming him, hit at Maulana Fazlur Rehman for bringing out a million march for the implementation of Sharia in the country, only when he is out of the game.

“Why is it that he [is doing so now] and opposed us earlier,” Maulana Aziz asked, adding that “things are getting closer and there will be a change in the system soon”.

Maulana Aziz made a sudden decision on Thursday evening that he will lead Friday prayers in Lal Masjid when the ICT administration, police and other law enforcement agencies were busy preparing for the March 23 parade. He had also planned to lay the foundation of Jamia Hafsa, a seminary for girls and women, which was deferred till next week.

He said Jamia Hafsa should be built on the plot adjacent to Lal Masjid, which used to be a children’s library and was occupied by female students of the Jamia Hafsa before the 2007 military operation. The Jamia Hafsa building and the library were demolished by the government following the operation in 2007 against Lal Masjid.

The move also caught police and Rangers posted outside Lal Masjid by surprise. There are usually two Rangers’ vehicles posted outside the mosque on Fridays but there was only one on this day due to heavy engagement.

The official prayer leader of Lal Masjid, Amir Siddique, was sidelined and he did not even show up at the mosque at prayer time.

Maulana Aziz made a fiery speech in the sermon and said he will not lead the Friday prayers as the ICT administration had stopped him from doing so. Therefore Haroon Rashid, son of Abdul Rashid Ghazi, who was killed in the 2007 military operation, led the prayers.

Meanwhile, an ICT administration official told Dawn that Maulana Abdul Aziz tried to dodge the system but he will not be allowed to enter Lal Masjid next week.

“We have already sealed Jamia Hafsa H-11 and nobody should underestimate the power of the state,” the official said.Maulana Aziz had tried the same in May last year during the interim government, but the attempt failed. He tried to regain the post of khateeb of the mosque in Nov 2018 as well.

Maulana was removed from the post on the orders of the court in 2004 following a fatwa he issued against the army and the operation against terrorists in Waziristan.

However, he was reinstated after his release from prison in 2009, but he stirred another controversy in 2014 after he openly extended support to the perpetrators of the Army Public School attack in Peshawar by calling it a reactionary move by the terrorists.

His several attempts to get hold of a microphone in Lal Masjid was foiled by the government in 2017 as well.

Lal Masjid is a state-owned mosque and Maulana Abdullah, father of Maulana Abdul Aziz, was its first khateeb. After his assassination in the 1990s, Maulana Abdul Aziz was appointed the khateeb by the ICT’s Auqaf Department.

He is already over the age of 60 years and has retired as a govt employee, the ICT official said, adding that Amir Siddique has succeeded him.

Shame on media to give significance to all these maulana/maulvi/padre/rabi/pandit ignorant tools. Ignorance is one thing, fanning it is criminal. Unfortunately, these tools exist in all societies and in all religions.

The government needs to give this guy the khadim rizvi special. Make him go away before he riles up the religious nutjobs.

It should be easy to find a cleric to challenge him and prove him wrong, not sure why he needs to be hanged or imprisoned as per other posts in this thread. Pakistan was created on the basis of being an Islamic country so if democracy is indeed disallowed in Islam, this would undermine the very basis of the country. Simple :)

The problem is even if he is proven wrong people will blindly follow him. Ignorance is bliss.

He is the same man who ran while wearing burqa from laal masjid. What is the fatwa in that maulvi sahab ?

This clown should be under arrest at the very least. He is a national disgrace and must be stopped. The best thing Musharraf did was to take action against these clowns and he should have made sure that this monster was not allowed back in public.

Well with all due respect in countries where the awareness is next to nothing, democracy doesnt always work.

Democracy is the only solution right now.

In Islam Khilafat is what is approved , that means he is like administrator and would be ruling according to Quran.

But if some cleric is claiming such a thing , he needs to give practical solutions , without which just shouting is not enough.

How can Khilafat be possible without the support of entire muslim world? Doesnt appointing a Khalifa mean that he will rule over the entire Muslim world?

Not to mention we dont have the visionaries and wise intellectuals who are fit to be Khalifas. These fickle moulvis will bring doom to the country.

Islam gives people free choice to adopt any system of rule that suits them. The Qur’an prescribes two principles of governance present in successful democracies as well and leaves the rest to the people to decide.

First, ‘adl or absolute justice;

and

Second, mushawarah, or consultation.

Indeed the latter principle contains within it the notion of representative government that the West terms democracy.

Yet Islam is flexible, and allows for democracy, monarchy, tribalism and other forms of government as long as they meet the requirements of absolute justice and consultation.

Here are the verses from the Holy Quran referring to the argument above.

Verily, Allah commands you to make over the trusts to those entitled to them, and that, when you judge between men, you judge with justice. And surely excellent is that with which Allah admonishes you! Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing. [Holy Quran Chapter 4, verse 59]

And those who hearken to their Lord, and observe Prayer, and whose affairs are decided by mutual consultation, and who spend out of what We have provided for them.. [Holy Quran Chapter 42, verse 39]

As long as absolute justice and mutual consultation are employed just as Prophet Muhammad PBUH did in developing the Charter of Medina, Islam gives people the power to develop the form of government they choose.

It is worth noting that due to Islam’s requirements of absolute justice and mutual consultation, by definition Islam rejects theocratic, communist, dictatorial, and fascist rule. Such forms of government inherently are unjust and dismiss consultation.

Options are there but what do you think is the preferred form of Government in Islam? Or there is no preferred form as per your understanding?

Allah SWT in the Holy Quran had set some rules & boundaries for Muslims that if You Do this this this and abstain from this this and this than Khilafat in form of spiritual governance will stay in You and if you do not abide as a Muslim Nation by these injunctions than It will be taken away from You. With Khilafat e Rashida it ended within 30 years.

I have little interest in his logic or knowledge or lack of. The state matters more than the individual and he should be muzzled

Standoff between Maulana Aziz, officials continues as cleric's followers show up for support

A tense environment prevailed on Saturday near the capital's Lal Masjid, which has been occupied by its deposed khateeb Maulana Abdul Aziz, with the cleric's supporters chanting slogans amidst a heavy police presence.

Like during the previous two governments, Maulana Aziz is testing the nerves of the government by occupying the state-owned mosque for the past two weeks and reiterating his claim to be its prayer leader.

The standoff continued on Saturday, with the Maulana remaining holed up inside the mosque along with several female students. Police have cordoned off the area by placing barriers and barbed wires on the roads around the mosque.

With no solution in sight, both sides appeared to have adopted a strict posture, possibly to mount pressure on each other. The Islamabad assistant commissioner (AC) City was present outside the mosque today and discouraged interaction between police and the supporters of Maulana Aziz who continued to arrive at the site the whole day in a bid to cross the barricades.

Since the area was closed to the general public, around two dozen supporters of Maulana Aziz offered evening prayers on the main road from Aabpara to Melody by blocking it.

After the prayers, some females occupying the mosque approached the boundary wall of the mosque and started raising slogans. The men who had offered the evening prayers on the road responded to the slogans.

However, the men dispersed after a few minutes when, on the directives of the AC City, police personnel started to gather in a formation on their side of the barbed wire. Soon the females too went inside the mosque as women police personnel approached that part of the mosque's boundary.

Talking to Dawn via telephone, Maulana Aziz lashed out at the PTI government over the standoff situation, saying Prime Minister Imran Khan's government was worse than the rule of former military ruler retired Gen Pervez Musharraf.

He alleged that the current government was "not only incompetent but tyrants of a higher degree as well".

Aziz said the government was "totally directionless" in its decision-making and was bent upon "creating a scene out of the fragile situation".

The cleric said that all his demands were based on the judgement of the Supreme Court issued in October 2007 by then-chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry.

“We have shown restraint for 13 years but this government was not even willing to talk and find a negotiated solution,” Aziz said, adding that the seminary built at the cost of Rs35 million in H-11 sector has been taken over by the government.

He’s not just a loony Pakistani molvi. Theirs actually people just like him in the west. For example my mums sisters husband ( I refuse to call him my uncle) believers democracy is wrong and is flawed and we need to change. He’s probably more loony then this guy. He’s a white revert. Easily mislead and very easy to push your ideologies into.

A deal has been made. Mullah Aziz K will stop occupying the seminary after government accepted his demand of providing 10000 meter square of land for expanding his seminary.

No government, be it the PML-N, PPPP and PTI, is willing to take on the mullahs!

At least, this time he would not have to cross-dress and attempt to flee from security forces.

As always, we’ve “negotiated” with him. You know, as equals. The might of the state vs a cross dressing maulvi from Rajanpur.

I think a case should be registered against him and he should be put in jail, only place where he should be.

I wish Pakistan could do some kind of deal with Saudis to keep idiotic mullahs like him and Khadim to Saudi but even Saudi wouldn't want these termites

Khilafat can be established in small piece of land . What khilafat means is that all matters will be judged by Quran and authentic hadeeth.

well.... the judiciary is probably corrupt . and democracy is failing, on an international scale, not just in pakistan.

not that i in anyway support this maulana of course

Lal Masjid cordoned off once again after deadline to vacate expires

ISLAMABAD: Lal Masjid has once again been cordoned off by law enforcement Wednesday evening after the deadline given to former cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz, his family and students to vacate the premises expired.

Officials from the capital administration and police told Dawn the mosque was cordoned off because the occupants were given a deadline to vacate the premises by Wednesday.

They said an agreement was reached with Mr Aziz on Sunday under which he would be allotted land for Jamia Hafsa and the mosque would be vacated in return. Whereas the maulana’s nephew, Haroon Abdul Rasheed Ghazi, denied that they had agreed to vacate the mosque.

They said the move was also a part of security arrangements ahead of the visit of the president of Turkey and PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s appearance before the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), which is close to the mosque.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will arrive in Islamabad today for a two-day visit and will stay in the Red Zone.

A police contingent that included personnel from the Counter Terrorism Force, police commandos, riot police and women officials arrived at Lal Masjid before Asr prayers and cordoned off the building.

The contingent was deployed around the mosque on Municipal Road, Masjid Road and Shaheed-i-Millat Road, as well as at the weekly market adjacent to the mosque. Entry into the mosque has been restricted, and only area residents are allowed to enter to offer prayers.

The police deployed in the area are asking people to show their CNICs to confirm their addresses, the officials said. People are also being searched if found to be suspicious.

The capital administration has also banned the entry of women and girls in the mosque, they said. Prayers are being offered as usual, but only area residents are allowed to pray there.

The mosque is under the administrative control of the Auqaf department, and only an official from the department can be appointed khateeb or naib khateeb on a regular basis, the officials said.

They explained that the occupants had demanded the position of khateeb but neither Mr Aziz nor his nephew Haroon Abdul Rasheed Ghazi are Auqaf employees.

The house and seminary which they have claimed ownership of are built on government land at the mosque, they added.

The official said another round of negotiations was started with Mr Aziz on Wednesday, and an eight-member committee of Deoband scholars has been involved.

In addition to that committee, a group of traders from G-6 are also assisting the administration in the negotiation, they said. The capital administration, including an assistant commissioner and magistrate, are also negotiating with Mr Aziz. A fourth team, comprising Ulema of the Auqaf department was also holding talks.

The police cordon around Lal Masjid was lifted last Sunday after two weeks, when the administration and Mr Aziz reached an agreement.

Mr Aziz had demanded land for the Jamia Hafsa seminary at locations that were not acceptable to the government, the officials said, as he had demanded land in the sectoral areas. He did not accept the locations offered by the government in exchange, they said.

The officials said his demand for land made on Sunday was conveyed to the government by the administration for approval, but a decision has not been made yet.

When contacted, Mr Aziz’ nephew Mr Rasheed said that a police contingent reached the mosque “out of nowhere and besieged it all of a sudden at Asr”. He claimed residents were stopped from praying inside the mosque.

He said the residents prayed on the road instead, and the prayers were led by someone from among them. Mr Rasheed denied that any agreement was made with the administration to vacate the mosque and denied that any land was demanded for the seminary.

He said it was agreed during the last round of negotiations that Mr Aziz would remain in the mosque and lead prayers. He said they would stay in the house adjacent to the mosque and students would be in the seminary.

Mullah Aziz K is not backing down despite government’s offer of a large tract of land for his mosque’s expansion.

The situation is really tense. Videos have been emerging of black-clad, stick-wielding women who are seen guarding the Lal Masjid and hurling insults at policemen.

Lest we forget, this mosque is government property, established so that government servants from the various ministries in the vicinity had a convenient place to attend Friday prayers. In theory, the authorities can just fire the administration and install a new one. In practice... well, let’s just say the last thirteen years suggest otherwise.

This burkha mulla is in bed with our agencies. They should have given him Khadim Rizvi's treatment. This Burkha mulla killed our jawans and he is still alive and campaigning publicly that too in Islamabad.

Not just jawans, an SSG colonel also died in the siege of 2007 from bullets fired from this Masjid-e-Zarrar. After APS in 2014, Aziza K was all over the news justifying that atrocity.

Yet here he is again, alive and kicking with the shameless chutzpah that is the hallmark of maulvis of his ilk.

This cross-dresser also swore allegiance to the Islamic State. What will it take to get rid of this vermin? They should do what they did with this comrade Malik Ishaq.

Well, Malik Ishaq was, too, protected by the boys and they got rid of him only after he declared allegiance to the Islamic State and stopped dancing to the tunes of the boys.

Why can't the state ban ahle hadith and any strain of Wahabism, they are not muslim.

The cross-dresser has won, the state has lost.

The government has reinstated Mullah Aziz K as the prayer leader in Lal Masjid. Previously, he was barred from leading prayers.

In other words, an avowedly anti-state person is once again a salaried employee of that same state.

This reminds me of my engineering university, where some of our professors railed against the dangers of a secular technical education while earning their living from said secular technical education.

Mullah K’s wife says she wants to talk and negotiate with Malik Riaz. She is after a plot!

NUST? We had a professor who refused to teach till we all wore headscarves in his class, the lunatic.

What a clown! This is state of educated men. This nation is hopeless!!

He was the only one like this though. Also saw that two classmates were sitting together in the lab (For their FYP) and rang their parents to warn them about the dangers of guys and girls sitting together alone :))

The funny part is that the lab always had an attendant inside so there was no way anyone could ever be alone there :)))

I would give this a guy a piece of my mind!I am pretty sure he drove a kafir-made car to school; heated his food in a kafir-made microwave and went to Hajj on kafir-made aircraft. Why do Pakistanis pretend to be so pious and religious?

Pakistanis are the biggest hypocrites. We have such birdbrains here in Hong Kong too. They badmouth the city, call it a city of sins and a lewd city but they all are receiving social welfare from the government and have grown 60-inch waistlines!!

No, one of the UETs, the one next to the Buddhist stupas. Everyone, from the VC down to the peon, belonged to a certain Deobandi preaching outfit. Our professors were often missing from class because they were out on three-day preaching excursions. The younger ones, in their innocent zeal, would blackmail students with grades in the oral exams into coming along on these trips.

In contrast, NUST, where I ended up later, was a breath of fresh air when it came to such pressure.

It is, NUST is much better. We had one professor like this, only one. Rest were all normal people.

And no pressure on any student to go for Tableeghi Trips :))

I’ll relate a story, which I’ve probably done earlier on this forum too, but it’s worth repeating.

In our second year at this outstanding institution of higher education, one of our batchmates passed away. We went to the funeral, and a few days afterwards, his friends organized a Quran khwaani at the campus masjid. We went, recited a para each, and then it was time for dua. Who do we standing up to lead the dua but one of the professors. After a few token words about the deceased, he made a smooth segue into why “Angrezi Taleem,” as opposed to religious education, was no good. The insinuation, hard to miss, was that our friend, dead at age 19, had wasted his life away.

One could dismiss this as the rants of an uncouth cleric, but the professor had degrees in Angrezi Taleem from the UK, where he had been sent on a scholarship, was teaching Angrezi Taleem at the university, collecting a salary, housing benefits and quota seats for his kids, one of whom was a classmate of ours.

I am not surprised one bit. As I have said earlier, I have come across such tools so many times. Pakistanis are the biggest hypocrites!

Your post reminds me of Munafiq-E-Azam: Oreo Jan Maqbool. He has sent off his daughter to study in at a U.S. university while he appears on TV every week to denounce Magrabi Taleem. Amongst other garbage, he says Magrabi Taleem is a ploy by the West to vulgarise Pakistan society.

It astounds me how spineless the state and the central government act at times. They are so scared of taking action against these mullahs who always find new ways to take the people and the state itself hostage. Whether its TLP or these Lal Masjid goons its always the same old story.

These mullahs are a cancer to our future as a nation.

That’s awful but I couldn’t help but laugh. Something out of a satirical black comedy

It is pretty damn disconcerting that 1400 years later, there is still confusion or people are deliberately trying to confuse what mode of government is permissible in Islam. And I mainly blame the Saudi royal family for it because they have distorted the truth and divided Muslims to maintain their grip... which is of course entirely illegal and despotic in my view.

Maulana Abdul Aziz, 6 others booked for violating govt order

ISLAMABAD: A case has been registered against former Lal Masjid cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz and six others for disobeying a government order, spreading fear and inciting people against the state.

The case was registered with the Aabpara police on a complaint lodged by SHO Inspector Mohammad Walyat against Mr Aziz and six others under Pakistan Penal Code sections 505(b) (with intent to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public or to any section of the public whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the state or against the public tranquility) and 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant).

According to the Aabpara police, Mr Aziz gathered people at Lal Masjid for Friday prayers despite a ban on prayer congregations imposed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. He provoked the sentiments of people, they added.

Officials deployed around the mosque informed them of the ban on prayer congregations and the misuse of loudspeakers, but they ignored. They said around 400 people gathered at the mosque whose sentiments were provoked by these actions.

A police officer told Dawn on condition of anonymity that no arrests have been made in the case so far.

A separate case has been registered with the Golra police against a khateeb and two others for disobeying an order issued by the government. The khateeb was arrested after the case was registered, but the other two people remained at large, the police said.

They said the suspects violated the ban on prayer congregations in Bilal Masjid in E-11/4. The violations led to 200 people gathered at the mosque, putting their lives and the lives of others at risk.

The capital administration has asked the police to compile data on mosques, khateebs and imams who violated the ban on prayer congregations on Friday.

The administration and police were lenient towards khateebs and imams who disobeyed the order issued by the administration, administration officials said.

Every police station in the capital arrested three to four imams and khateebs who violated the ban on prayer congregations on Friday, but they were released after they were given warnings.

Police have been asked to compile data on them so action can be taken against them if they ignore the warnings. Obtaining undertakings from them that they will not disobey the order is also being considered.

A total of 121 cases disobeying the administration’s order have been registered in the capital since the lockdown was announced, police said. Some 424 people have been booked and arrested for violating the ban on various activities imposed to halt the spread of the coronavirus.

Violations include social and public gatherings, riding pillion, running passenger vehicles and opening shops - not including those selling food items.

All the alleged violators were produced in the court of the magistrate and assistant commissioners for further action.

Most were released on personal surety and others were fined, officials said. A few, allegedly involved in hoarding and profiteering, were sent to jail.

The officials said that because of the current conditions, most violators are released on personal surety and fines as sending them to jail may put their lives at risk as well.

Mullah Burka back to his antics. He was playing jihadi hymns over loudspeakers on Friday.

Make it compulsory to have a high school degree before growing a beard in Pakistan. Like seriously the amount of jahil Mullas we have in our country, it's embarrassing and scary. Unleash fauj on these types and throw them behind bars.

They don't let any opportunity go to tarnish the image of Islam with their messed up twisted ideologies. Pakistan has done a really bad job with such Mulla goons numbers. Many other Muslim countries would never let that happen.

Former Lal Masjid khateeb Maulana Aziz moves to Jamia Hafsa

ISLAMABAD: Former Lal Masjid khateeb Maulana Abdul Aziz along with his family moved to Jamia Hafsa from the mosque under an agreement made between him and the government.

Haroon Rasheed, son-in-law and nephew of the cleric, told Dawn that Maulana Aziz and his wife shifted to their house located on the premises of Jamia Hafsa at G-7.

“Maulana Aziz will designate a khateeb for Lal Masjid as it is his discretion,” he said, adding his entry in the mosque has been banned for two months.

However, teachers and students of Jamia Hafsa residing inside the Lal Masjid will remain there and continue their educational activities, Mr Rasheed added.

He said an agreement was made with the capital administration and it would be implemented during the next two months. Maulana Aziz may share the details of the agreement with the media after a couple of days, he added.

Earlier, there was a deadlock between Moulana Aziz and the government and several ulema and religious leaders were mediating between them, sources in the capital administration and police said, adding both had refused to show flexibility in their demands.

But on May 31, police deployed around Lal Masjid detained the elder daughter of Maulana Aziz for over four hours, said the sources. The ulema and religious leaders who were mediating between them approached the police and requested them to release her, but their requests were turned down.

Later, they approached the government and senior officers of the capital administration and showed displeasure over the matter and informed them that under such a situation they would not mediate any more, the sources said. After more than four hours, the woman was released.

Besides, senior officers of the capital administration scolded police officers saying their act may sabotage the peace and the negotiation process with Maulana Aziz.

Later, the same ulema and religious leaders approached Maulana Aziz and the administration officers and asked them to show flexibility to resolve the issue.

On Tuesday, Maulana Mohammad Ahmed Ludhianvi visited Lal Masjid along with Maulana Abdul Rehman Muavia and negotiated with Maulana Aziz, said the sources.

In the meantime, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Operations Waqaruddin Syed also visited the mosque and excused with Maulana Aziz over the detention of his daughter and assured him that action would be taken against those responsible.

When contacted, the DIG said Maulana Aziz left the mosque voluntarily after which the police were withdrawn from the area.

E-7 seminary in Islamabad becomes site of unexpected conflict

ISLAMABAD: The administration office of Jamia Fareedia, a seminary in E-7, was occupied by Maulana Abdul Aziz in the middle of the night on Monday.

Mr Aziz and his wife Umme Hasaan occupied the seminary office, after which he led morning prayers and announced that the seminary’s principal, Maulana Abdul Ghaffar, had been removed.

During this time, Mr Ghaffar stayed in his house on the premises of the seminary.

Maulana Yaqoob Ghazi, a close aide of Mr Aziz, claimed that Mr Ghaffar did not want to leave because he knew he was “on the wrong side”.

The incident was followed by a protest at noon, leading police to block the road towards the seminary. Police and capital administration officials have ruled out the possibility of violence.

An administration official, on condition of anonymity, said there were only a handful of seminary students and staff at Jamia Fareedia or any other seminary because of the closure of educational institutions due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The situation has placed the city’s administration in a fix, as Mr Aziz’ move may have violated an agreement he signed with the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration in June.Mr Ghazi said: “Maulana Abdul Aziz elevated Maulana Abdul Ghaffar to the post of deputy chief from administrator a few years ago. He removed Maulana Ghaffar as deputy chief around two months ago but he got too close to the authorities and tried to take Jamia Fareedia over.”

The matter of whether Mr Aziz has violated his agreement with the ICT administration is also uncertain. Since the text of the agreement was not made public, both sides have made opposing claims; administration officials say that under the agreement, Mr Aziz cannot participate in any such activity for two months while Mr Aziz’ son-in-law Haroon Rasheed said the agreement says he cannot interfere with or enter Lal Masjid for two months.

The police have cordoned off Jamia Fareedia and blocked all the roads leading to it.

Senior police and administration officials told Dawn that well-equipped police personnel, including the Counter Terrorism Force, Anti-Terrorism Squad and Anti-Riot Unit, were deployed around the seminary shortly after Mr Aziz moved there from Jamia Hafsa.

Senior administration and police officers, including the deputy commissioner, also visited the seminary to negotiate with Mr Aziz.

Mr Aziz, his family and more than 50 students from Jamia Hafsa, left G-7 on board wagons and headed to Jamia Fareedia at Fajr, officials said. Almost an hour later, an assistant inspector general from the Special Branch brought the matter to the notice of concerned officials.

The officers said two parties -the seminary’s nazim Mr Ghaffar and Mr Aziz - are now inside the seminary, and both claim ownership of it.Haroon Rasheed told Dawn that Jamia Fareedia was built by his grandfather in the 1970s and Mr Aziz was its rightful owner. He said Mr Ghaffar and the government were trying to remove Mr Aziz and take possession of the seminary.

“The government, including the administration and police, are helping Maulana Ghaffar and at the time we reached the seminary, officials from the police and administration also came there and cordoned off the area,” he said.

Really wish ISI would add these Mullah's to the missing people list. It would Pakistan so much better

Well with all due respect in countries where the awareness is next to nothing, democracy doesnt always work.

What is better than democracy?

The leader being chosen by a group of religious leaders? The leader being chosen by the main religious leader? Who chooses which religious leaders get to choose the PM or the President of the country? If there is a Caliph, does his son get to become the next Caliph? If the son is worthless can he be replaced? Who gets to decide if the son is worthless?

ISLAMABAD: The police presence around the E-7 seminary Jamia Fareedia has been heightened as tensions continue between former Lal Masjid cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz and the seminary’s administrator.

Capital administration and police officials told Dawn that the police deployment was increased after directions from the deputy commissioner. Surveillance in and around the seminary has also been increased to monitor the situation and act quickly if necessary, they said.

The police’s investigation wing has also gathered information and shared it with concerned senior officers to make arrangements to prevent violence between the two groups present on the seminary premises. The information suggests that the seminary’s administrator, Maulana Abdul Ghaffar, has 500 students and 90 other individuals including teachers with him, while Mr Aziz has 200 students.

Officers said there are also at least five submachine guns and 30-bore pistols inside the seminary, according to their intelligence.

There is currently a standoff between both parties in the seminary, each of which claims ownership and wants full control over the establishment.

The police’s investigation wing have advised the administration and police to make a strategy and plan for how to deal with the issue, they said, adding that an effective blockade should be set up around the seminary to keep more people and students from gathering there.

It should be made sure that no physical confrontation takes place between the two parties, they said.

In light of the information, more than 200 police officials, including personnel from the Counter Terrorism Department and the Anti-Riot Unit, have been stationed around the seminary. An armed personnel carrier has also been provided along with riot gear.

An equipped contingent of police with an armed personnel carrier and riot gear is also stationed in a sector nearby to respond if needed.

The officials said that surveillance has also been increased on a few seminaries to prevent students from gathering and trying to reach Jamia Fareedia to support either of the clerics.

Capital administration officials have also started approaching local ulema to negotiate with Mr Aziz and defuse the situation.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Hamza Shafqaat told Dawn that this is a private dispute between the two men and as it is not taking place on government land or a government mosque, their concern is to maintain law and order and avoid any untoward situation.

This ninja maulvi has mastered the art of conquering mosques.

I would use less harsh words to describe a religious scholar, unless you are absolutely 100% certain that he has bad intentions and is corrupt.

I do not trust what our police or security forces have to say as they have always been on some sort of agenda.

Lal Masjid cordoned off again to stop cleric’s possible return

ISLAMABAD: Tensions have risen again between the government and former khateeb of Lal Masjid Maulana Abdul Aziz after disappearance of one of his close aides.

The Special Branch alerted the capital administration and police that the cleric may break a recent agreement with the government and try to return to Lal Masjid. As a result, the mosque was again cordoned off by the police to intercept his entry.

When contacted, officers of the capital administration and police told Dawn on condition of anonymity that Maulana Aziz’s close aide Maulana Idrees disappeared from outside Jamia Fareedia on July 15. Some works were underway at the madressah on the direction of Maulana Aziz under the supervision of Maulana Idrees, they added.

After the disappearance of his aide, Maulana Aziz in a message threatened to break the agreement under which he had left Lal Masjid for two months. The agreement was reached between him and the government through a group of Ulema.

Over the threat, the Special Branch advised the administration and police to take measures so that Maulana Aziz did not move back to Lal Masjid.

On Friday, a well-equipped contingent of police, including Counter-Terrorism Force and Anti-Riot Unit, reached Lal Masjid and cordoned it off. Masjid Road and Municipal Road were blocked by the police.

Police and administration officers were not available to speak on the issue on record.

When contacted, Maulana Aziz’s nephew Haroon Rashid claimed that Maulana Idrees was picked by Counter-Terrorism Department when he was returning from Jamia Fareedia.

In response, the spouse of Maulana Aziz along with students of Jamia Hafsa reached Jamia Fareedia where its students locked her in a room, he alleged.

They also snatched mobile phones from students of Jamia Hafsa in the presence of senior officers, he claimed.

He said the station house officer (SHO) Kohsar recovered some of the mobile phones snatched from the students of Jamia Hafsa.

ISLAMABAD: The police on Wednesday cordoned off Jamia Hafsa to prevent former Lal Masjid cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz from leaving the seminary.

Capital administration and police officials told Dawn that Mr Aziz recently announced that he would return to Lal Masjid because the capital administration had violated an agreement he made with them.

In response, a police contingent consisting of 150 officials, including Counter Terrorism Department, Anti-Terrorism Force and Anti-Riot Unit personnel, were deployed around the G-7 seminary to prevent him from leaving.

Mr Aziz and his family moved to Jamia Hafsa from Lal Masjid in June after reaching an agreement with the administration under which he was banned from entering the mosque for two months.

On July 7, Mr Aziz, his family and Jamia Hafsa students moved into Jamia Fareedia, a seminary in E-7, causing tensions with the current seminary administration. He returned to Jamia Hafsa after two days following the intervention of ulema who assured him the matter that brought him to the seminary would be resolved.

In a message, Mr Aziz threatened to break the agreement with the capital administration, the officials said, after the disappearance of his close aide Maulana Idrees from outside Jamia Fareedia. The officials said Mr Aziz’ wife and students from Jamia Hafsa visited the seminary after Mr Idrees’ disappearance, resulting in a physical confrontation between the students of both seminaries.

In response to the message, police were deployed around Lal Masjid to prevent Mr Aziz from entering the mosque. He later said he would go to the mosque on Wednesday, at which point police also deployed around Jamia Hafsa to stop him there.

They said he exited Jamia Hafsa with guards and few others, but then went back inside after a brief chat with the police officials stationed there.

Mr Aziz’ nephew Haroon Rasheed told Dawn that Mr Aziz made his announcement because the administration violated the agreement by cordoning off Lal Masjid.

He said he delayed is plans to go to the mosque after administration officials and ulema asked him for time to resolve the issue.

ISLAMABAD: The federal government on Wednes*day moved the Islamabad High Court (IHC) for appoint*ment of state counsel for Indian spy, Commander Kul*b*h*u*shan Jadhav, to implement the verdict of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding his conviction.

The government filed the petition through the law and justice secretary after the agent of India’s intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), and the Indian government avoided the remedy made available to them by the federation for filing a review petition against his death sentence.

The defence secretary and Judge Advocate Gene*ral (JAG) at the General Headquarters (GHQ) have been impleaded as respondents in the petition that urged the IHC to appoint the counsel to review and reconsider the military court verdict in accordance with the ICJ decision.

According to the petition, Commander Jadhav of the Indian Navy illegally ent*ered Pakistan on March 3, 2016, and was arrested by the Pakistani authorities in a counter-intelligence operation from Mashkel, Baloch*is*tan. The naval commander confessed to his association with the Indian intelligence agency, RAW, and involvement in espionage and terrorist activities in different parts of Balochistan and Sindh. After a trial in a military court, the RAW agent was sentenced to death on April 10, 2017. The ICJ in its July 2019 ruling had asked Pakistan to grant consular access to India and called for effective review and reconsideration of Jadhav case.

Defence secretary, GHQ’s judge advocate general impleaded as respondents

Pakistan invited India to move a review and reconsideration petition before the IHC under “The Interna*tio*nal Court of Justice (Rev*iew and Reconsi*deration) Ordi*nance 2020” against his conviction by a military court.

The invitation was extended to the Indian government after Commander Jadhav twice declined to take advantage of the law, insisting that sympathetic consideration be given to his mercy petition pending with Chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa.

Section 2 of the ICJ Review and Reconsideration Ordinance, 2020 empowers Pakistan’s high court to review and reconsider any decision where the ICJ has decided in relation to a foreign national in respect of rights under Article 36 of the Vienna Convention of Consular Relations of April 24, 1963 or a foreign national was aggrieved in respect of the rights available under Article 36 of the Vienna Convention of Consular Relations of April 24, 1963.

Such foreign national, whether himself or through his authorised representative or through a consular officer of a mission of his country, may file a petition before the high court for review and reconsideration in terms of Section 3 with regard to an order of conviction or sentence awarded by a military court operating under the Pakistan Army Act, 1952.

In the petition, the law ministry stated that the RAW agent had refused to engage a lawyer for himself and refused to file a petition for the review and reconsideration of his sentence and conviction. The petition said he “does not have independent means nor does he possesses the capability to engage and instruct a lawyer in Pakistan without assistance from his own country i.e. India which is avoiding the remedy made available by the federation under the ordinance.

“It is in the national interest that a legal representative is appointed for and on behalf of commander Jadhav, so that the review and reconsideration proceedings of the accused conviction and sentence may be initiated, in terms of the ordinance thereby discharging Pakistan of its duty to comply with the judgement of the ICJ,” the petition added.

Subsequently, the petition requested the court to “appoint any suitable” counsel to file petition for the review and reconsideration on behalf of the convict.

Afghan Taliban flags hoisted in Islamabad seminary, police registers case

Aziz, his students and fellow collaborators were booked under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) and different sections of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

Maulana Abdul Aziz, an infamous radical cleric, on Sunday hoisted Afghan Taliban flags at a seminary in Islamabad on Sunday, news agency PTI reported citing Pakistan news outlet Dawn. Pakistan police registered a case against Aziz, who also runs the women’s seminary known as Jamia Hafsa, and cordoned off the area with an anti-riot unit.

The Islamabad police spotted Afghan Taliban flags on Jamia Hafsa’s rooftops and received open threats from Aziz himself. Aziz, his students and fellow collaborators were booked under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) and different sections of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

Islamabad police faced taunts, threats

The Islamabad police personnel who reached the spot faced warnings from Aziz, who also allegedly brandished weapons at them. The people inside Jamia Hafsa invoked the name of Taliban and said the law enforcement personnel will face dire consequences for their intervention.

Seminary students and teachers also taunted the police and led to tensions in the area. This is the third time since August that Afghan Taliban flags were hoisted in the seminary. The Islamabad deputy commissioner after removing the flags shared an update on Twitter. The law enforcement officials took action after residents were terrorized after the flags were hoisted once more.

Aziz took advantage legal loophole

Islamabad deputy commissioner also said that Abdul Aziz took help of legal lacunae as Pakistan does not criminalise hoisting of any flag because of which no law addresses the issue or under which legal action can be taken.

Aziz, infamous for his role in the Lal Masjid case, where he threatened to overthrow the Pakistan government and impose Sharia law in the nation. The Pakistan government led by then president Pervez Musharraf ordered the Pakistan Special Forces to storm the establishment which led to the death of more than 100 people and fundamentalist cleric Abdul Rashid Ghazi.

Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Monday said that the government resolved issues with Maulana Abdul Aziz through dialogue, as it wanted the situation in the capital to remain normal.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, he said that there were several cases against Maulana Aziz but the government wanted the situation in the capital to remain normal. "That's why we keep talking to them," he said, adding that Maulana Aziz had an issue every other day.

"Every day he has an issue and every day we try to resolve it," he said, adding that there were 511 madrassahs and 1,000 mosques in the capital.

"Out of 511, we have issues with only one which we resolve through dialogue."

Without naming the entity he was referring to, the minister said that the government had made such efforts with another religious organisation. "However, the result of that was not a good one," he said.

The minister's statement comes days after police registered a case against Maulana Aziz, his collaborators as well as seminary students under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) and different sections of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) after flags representing the Afghan Taliban were found hoisted on the rooftop of Jamia Hafsa in G-7/3.

Maulana Aziz had also openly threatened police with dire consequences by using the name of the Afghan Taliban.

However, after registering the first information report (FIR), it was decided to seal it. This was the third time since Aug 21 Afghan Taliban flags were hoisted on the seminary.

Pakistan is dealing with this guy appropriately. Give him enough respect so he doesn't unleash suicide bombers. But curb him from doing anything beyond what he's doing. Taunts etc are fine as long as they are not acting on those taunts. Just wait out for his sweet death and deal with an iron fist with his successors.
