What's new

Recommend me a laptop

ASUS N53SV-XE1

A little above your budget, but look at the specs for that price:

Intel Core i7-2630QM Quad-Core Processor
500GB Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
4GB of DDR3 1333 MHz SDRAM, 4 slots, 16GB Max;
Nvidia GT540M Graphics with 1GB DDR3 VRAM;
1 USB 3.0 port, 2 USB 2.0 ports
15.6-Inch HD (1366x768) LED Display

Buying Laptop: need recommendations + deals

I want to buy a laptop which will be my first own laptop. :asif

It will be mostly used in home for social networking (Skype, MSN etc.), watching movies, playing games, word, excel etc.
But I may want to use it for some of my software development work as well occasionally.

So what do you guys recommend? And please point out some good deals out there.

Processor: Definitely Intel but not sure i3 or i5 or i7? 2 or 4 Cores? 3MB cache enough?
RAM: DDR3 SDRAM; 1066 or 1333 MHz Speed? what size?
Video Memory: should I get a Dedicated one? what Size?
Hard Drive: Atleast 500 GB; 5400 rpm should be ok
Not sure if I need USB 3.0 port as well.
HDMI Output yes.
Built-in webcam and microphone.
Webcam camera should not be crap.

Will not buy a Mac.

why would you want to do software development on a laptop? If you are willing to forego that you could get a nice laptop for around $400 which would fullfil all your other needs apart from playing graphic intensive games.

if you must have games and software development you will easily be looking at paying north of $1000 for a decent laptop.

if i did have the money to buy a shiny new laptop itd be this, http://zenbook.asus.com/ , even though i have had bad experience with rubbish asus batteries. i had a go on a zenbook in a shop and it is amazing.

If you want to play games you need to get dedicated graphics.

Sites to find good laptops with dedicated graphics:

Tiger Direct
NCIX
Canada Computers
Newegg

Just filter by dedicated graphics on any of those sites. A decent graphics card is Nvidia GT540M, anything less you may not be able to play the latest games.

I found a decent one on Future Shop as well:
http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/prod...spx?path=74b2fdce5efc679a099e4b961451a22fen02

I would wait till boxing day for any good deals.

If you ever need to compare a CPU or graphics card, simply google it and look for "notebookcheck". They run benchmarks on all mobile hardware so you can get a good estimate. For gaming, you want to look for 30fps at least to get smooth gameplay.

Unless you're doing some hardcore programming, any laptop with a good processor and 4gb+ ram can suffice most programming needs.

Some good Acer laptops:
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=62593&vpn=LX.RNF02.005&manufacture=Acer
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=710_577_369&item_id=042606

Though you give up the high class brand name of Asus. The Acer has HDMI and USB 3.0 as well.

If you want to play games like a hard core gamer, better get a desk top. With the money you spend on Laptop, you will get a much more powerful Desk top.

buy a T series lenovo (formerly IBM) thinkpad. those things are built like a tank and should serve you well for many years.
edit: for gaming, maybe an asus brand laptop would suit you better, bear in mind they are beefy, gaming isn't really a laptop thing, you can make yourself a pc for much much cheaper that would spank a laptop in terms of gaming

Thanks for your replies. The laptop will not be used for hardcore gaming; just simple normal games. Similarly will not be used much for software development.

The market is full of HP and Acer Laptops; my guess is they are the cheapest ones; solds the most and also the ones with biggest complains. Correct?

There is this laptop in Best Buy for 500$: Acer Aspire; 17"; i3-370M, 2 cores, 2.4 GHz, 3MB cache; DDR3 SDRAM 6GB size; 640 GB Hard Drive; dedicated video card NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M 1 GB size; no 3.0 USB though.

What do you guys think about this deal?

the lenovo thinkpad T series oozes quality and finish, don't settle for cheap generic plasti-shi*

What new Laptop should I get

I'm looking to buy a new gaming laptop. One of the things I really care about is screen size. I want a 15.6 inch laptop for me that is ideal I could go lower but 17 inch is out of question. My question what suggestions do you guys have for gaming laptops. The two that I am looking at currently are the Lenovo Y-50 UHD or the MSI - GS60 Ghost Pro 15.6" 4K Ultra. Both have 4K displays. The MSI is bit more expensive but it runs Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 while the Lenovo runs 960. Both pretty much have the same harddrive, processor, and ram memory. The Lenovo y-50 is about $1400 and the MSI is $1800. $1800 is the max I'm going so does anyone have a suggestion as to which one I should I get from these or have a suggestion of their own?

1. 4k is useless since
a.) 970M or even 980M can't push that many pixels (8.3M)
b.) 4k is an overkill for 15.6 screen size.
c.) lack of content.
d.) Windows scaling is still sucks for some apps/text.

so lack of content and no 4k gaming => 4k useless in that form factor/package

For $1400-1800 range, instead of 4k, i'd rather get a 980M mobile with 2k or even 1080p screen.

at this price point, you'll want at least a Core i7, 8GB/16GB Ram, 256GB+ SSD (+HDD for storage)

The Best deal I could find: http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8672-clevo-p670sg-p-7800...

1521$ with a 980m!!!! Just to let you know 980 is 75% as fast as the desktop 980 which is the fastest right now. Ignore the people who say laptops can not handle like desktops bc they can. New 900 series closed the gap between the dekstop and laptop GPU's and it will get better. The laptop above has Onkyo speakers and no they did not change the speakers on the new G751. It still sounds like my Asus g75. Asus's speakers are one the worst ever trust me on this. The Sager's Onkyo and Msi's Dynaudio are the best to none. Asus's casing is rubber which wears off in a year or so and fingerprints will remain for good. Their g750 series last year was all aluminum and going back to rubber turned me off big time this year. I take care of my electronics like baby and again if you buy Asus, you will hate the rubber when it starts having permanent oil/finger marks on it. At least on aluminum you can just wipe it with ease. I am an Asus g75 user here and I am buying this Sager above this year. You can't beat that price especially one with a 980m. Can't find a 980m less than 2000$ I guarantee you!!! Read the forums online like I did and ask about Sager laptops. 90% people will tell you how good they are. Peace...

I have recently tested lenovo Y5070 with touch screen. Good CPU , GPU was underpowered , i had to reduce setting on games to low with lower resolution to make games like Bradman cricket playable.

Currently have two laptops Lenovo G480 n Haier PM scheme the former is a better machine

Dell XPS 15 is by far the best in its class and exceeds most of your requirements. It costs about $1600 in Pakistan so should be around the same in the US/Canada and around 20% more in Europe. If you're into it, you can also get a late model 15" Macbook Pro, a superior machine to anything running Windows, for around $2000.

Macbook is not for gaming.

Unless he's planning to get a top of the line Alienware, an MBP with a discrete GPU can run just about anything an XPS can. Worst case scenario, one can install a copy of windows for your gaming needs if compatibility is an issue, the hardware is top notch and won't be a bottleneck. If you think a Mac is simply a 'cosmetic piece' you clearly need to use one.

In any case, it was an offhand suggestion. My first recommendation, if you'd read the post through, was an XPS 15 which is essentially a slightly slower MBP running Windows.

If he is looking for a gaming pc he definitely isnt look for minimum setting configurations. I think that is pretty much understandable. The hardware is awful for gaming. Macbooks are never made for gaming anyway. And yeah i have used one, i have an air at my home. So, yep.

Alienwares are perfect because they provide the graphic amplifier option.

However, if you want to go cheaper, look for Asus or Lenovo. They have gaming laptops around 1000$ mark.

The hardware on an MGXC or MJLQ model is the same as that on an xps except the software is much better optimized. Most games available natively on mac will run just as well on one of those models as the windows version would on an xps. Also, Air != MBP, you obviously wont be able to use one to play games. Point is that unless you want to play whichever version of Crysis is out now and Skyrim on maxed out settings, in which case we shouldn't even be talking about MBPs and XPS', theres very little to separate a late 2014-2015 MBP and an XPS 15 apart fron the choice of OS.

I cant believe i have to explain someone that how MBP's are awful for gaming. God. You get an alienware at the same price as a MBP. A darn Alienware which beats the hell outta of a MBP when it comes to specs. Who the hell wants to run 5 year old native OS X games if they are looking for a gaming pc?

He would be looking to play TW3, GTA V like games. Not old games that you mentioned. I am not even talking about XPS here mate. LOL. I just cant believe i have to explain this stuff.

The only thing I am worried about Alienware is that I have heard some bad things about it. I just recently got into PC gaming so I don't know that much about which brands are good. That's why I am asking around before I make a bad decision. Ideally I don't want to go over $2000. Ideal price would be around 1500-1700 dollars so I can also buy a long term warranty plan as well. Apple is a no go, because they don't run a lot of the high setting/graphic games.

Go over to the alienware website. Checkout their different configurations for 15 inch. You will be able to find one in your range. Also check out their graphic amplifier option which is excellent. I dont know what bad things you have heard but alienware are amazing laptops. You can check razor laptops too. Not sure if they will come in your range.

So I have the Y50
Issues yellow color
Scaling when in 4K mode

Do not run the games in 4K mode.
Otherwise it runs games perfectly without issues.

A good deal in my view i have it for the past 4 months no issues

Scaling issues seems resolved thanks to windows 10

Thanks I think I'm going to end up getting the alienware. Even though its more expensive I just will have to wait a bit longer to get it. Thanks everyone for the advice

Advice needed - Buying new Laptop

Hi guys, I'd just like some suggestions for a laptop for University next year.

I'll be using it for work of course, but I also want to be able to play games on it. So far, I've narrowed down to these two models.

HP Envy 15t $1,324.95
http://amzn.com/B016505NSW
Exclusive features - Touch display, fingerprint scanner

and

Acer Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition $949.99 (+approx $200 for SSD and RAM)
http://amzn.com/B015XBKY6U
Exclusive features - Quad core processor, better Graphics card
(I plan on getting an SSD and more RAM separately)

Both have the 6th Gen Skylake processors, but i'm personally leaning towards the Acer due to the better Graphics, processor, and it's price.

What are your suggestions?

Go for HP, enough said /thread

Quality first. HP is Quality, a few hundreds but its worth it

Why the HP though? The Acer seems to be better specwise, and both have a metal finish design.

I see what you mean by HP being a top brand, but isn't Acer quite decent as a brand too?

he asked for a gaming laptop, not one to use a dating website :sanga
Ha ha. Whats the connection? [emoji14]

By the way i have a Mac and have installed windows in it via bootcamp and can play games on it. But my Mac model is a bit old, mid 2012. So games released till 2012 can be played smoothly.

I have a couple of bad experience with that brand so not sure about it. and the specs aren't that much different. I'll go for HP though. Quality matters for me and HP is trustworthy in that department

And there you go. MAC isn't designed for hardcore gaming. PC laptop can play games way past their limits.
MAC is best for designing and programming

Have you considered the surface pro/book?

I had a look. The Pro lacks graphics, while the Surface Book blows my budget out of the sky.

I'm looking at $1000USD, $1300 tops. I'm ordering from the states because it's a bit cheaper. Too bad the NZD-USD exchange rate is really bad these days, 2 years ago it was awesome, and I could probably pick up a $1600USD laptop for the same price as I'm currently paying for a $1200USD one.

Gaming would be alright on mac, but it would be a lot better on a Windows machine for the same price.

I wont recommend any laptop but I will say I have had bad experiences with HP so stay away from it.

HP is the worst laptop as far as gaming is concerned. Too much heating issues. I would recommend Lenovo models with graphics card. It's been 2 years and I can play heavy games like farcry 4 and dying light with no issues.

Honestly, laptops are not really made for gaming. I'm yet to see a good gaming laptop that can replace a home pc. The pro can play civ, lol and euiv, that kind of games. But the laptops that can play more advanced stuff for 1300$ are simply not the kind of laptop you want to buy, especially if you are going to use them for college. Just take something performant, solid, light and good quality (macbook, surface, vaio,...).

I don't need anything for heavy gaming.

Just want a decent spec laptop that can run games and more bulky programs too. Don't need them on top graphics, and will probably hook it up to my monitor, keyboard, and mouse while gaming anyway.

Not sure if people know or not, as of November 1st, hp has split in two public companies:

1) Hewlett-Packard Incorporated - builds personal computers and printers
2) Hewlett-Packard Enterprise: Provides IT services to corporates and governments.

The iconic brand is no longer what it was.

Expect hpi to be acquired in the next 2 years by another manufacturer. The growth is all on the services side and this is what drove Meg to separate the the company after 75 years. Anyone who cares, Meg Whitman is the ex ceo of ebay and has been running hp since 2012. She's a rock star and will continue her duties for hpe.

That is true, and was the original plan. But I'm finding it hard convincing my parents to get two machines, and they probably wouldn't let me get something that's completely built for gaming.

If you have a pot of gold lying around then get an Alienware.

Laptops built for gaming.

Keep in mind they are big and heavy and not the most ideal for lugging around

Yeah, that's why the Acer seems ideal for me. It can do some gaming, but it's not really that heavy. I feel Alienware is a bit overpriced, the cheapeast one is within my range, but it's heavy, thick and only has a 13" screen.

Who plays games on a laptop? Buy a desktop if you are a hardcore gamer. But if you still want to buy a laptop you should choose from HP(bad experience), Dell or Asus

This will be a good start

Intel I7 5th Generation Processor
2 GB nVidia Gfx Card
1 TB HDD
8 GB DDR3 RAM
17 inch screen
Windows 8.1 upgradable to Windows 10

I personally own a Sony Vaio but Sony is shutting down its laptops and mobile phones business in india. I am not too sure about the rest of the world.

Sony actually sold it's laptop business in 2014...I think the company that bought it out uses the name Vaio or something similar now.

It's because they did not want to compromise on the quality. And there are tons of companies who are manufacturing cheap laptops these days so they had no choice. Sony vaio was overpriced but it was worth it just like macbook.

It's not for hardcore gaming. Just medium level gaming, and for university. I'd like it to have a 15 inch screen since I have to take it around too.

Right now, the above I posted have

Intel i7 6th Gen
4GB Nvidia gfx card
1 TB HDD + 250GB SDD
16GB DDR4 RAM
15 inch screen
Windows 10

Decent enough? That's the best I can get in my price range.

I would suggest that you go for a low end laptop which doesnt suit gaming. As a student you should be spending time with books and outdoor sports. Computer gaming is just a time killer, and students should not waste valuable currency of time on such frivolous activities.

Good point. To be honest, I'm thinking of going midrange now, and maybe getting a PS4 (split cost with brother) for casual gaming. I'd eventually get a PS4 in my house anyway (have a little brother), and my parents easily control my console use, so studies should be fine.

Stay away from HP. I have two at my house right now with extreme heating issues.

For a gaming laptop look at the Alienware series or a Dell wait a decent graphics card.

Whatever you do, stay away from Acer! had a worst experience with it, switched to toshiba laptop, it's so great and runs smoothly.

If you want a cheap gaming laptop, I'd suggest you should look into MSI laptop or ASUS
