Pakistan Coach, Support Staff To Be Sacked After Champions Trophy Humiliation vs India: Report

The backlash due to the poor show in the Champions Trophy, including the humiliating defeat to India, hit the Pakistan team hard and its support staff led by former fast bowler Aaqib Javed is set to be overhauled, according to a cricket Board source. Pakistan lost to arch-rivals India by six wickets in Dubai on Sunday, after their 60-run defeat to New Zealand in the Champions Trophy opener in Karachi on February 19.

A well-informed source in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said that Aaqib will be relieved of his duties as interim head coach after the Champions Trophy.

“Obviously there is backlash over the team's performance in the CT. The Board hasn't decided as yet on whether the team will have separate head coaches (for red and white ball teams) but one thing is certain the current support staff will be overhauled now after the poor show in the Champions Trophy,” the source told PTI.

"But the way the Board has been changing coaches and selectors since last year, it will be a challenge to find other candidates for these positions,” he said.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi had appointed Aaqib as interim head coach first of the white ball team late last year after the resignation of Gary Kirsten. Aaqib was later asked to take over as interim red-ball coach also for the series in South Africa and against the West Indies at home after Australian Jason Gillispie left.

With Pakistan is due to tour New Zealand from March 16 to April 5 for five T20 Internationals and three ODIs, the Board has decided to finalise new permanent coach or coaches.

The source said due to the preparations for the Champions Trophy, the PCB could not focus on the hiring of new permanent coach(es) but now this will take priority.

“The PCB, after the way Kirsten and Gillispie resigned, is not going to get a choice of field when it comes to foreign coaches, so most probably the PCB will look at former players for the job,” the source said.

He said once Pakistan ends its campaign in the CT, Naqvi will also be conferring with the Board of Governors on whether to retain the national selection committee or not.

Naqvi only solution after any loss is throw his toys out of the pram and sack the coach .
No self respecting foreigner will touch Pakistan expect Saqlain or Misbah type loser to take charge and the circus will continue

We have to bring very young players like real U21 players even if they are lesser in talent compare to the current lot but there is a chance that they will improve when they play against International teams and we don't have to keep sticking with them , need to rotate them from a pool of 30 players and retain the performing ones even if we lose matches.

Players like Maaz ,Ghazi Ghori , Ali Raza , M.Azab, M.Shehzad , Usman Tariq , Mehran Mumtaz ,M.Ammar , M.Salman , Azan , Shahzeb , Shamyl , Arafat , Akif , Ubaid Shah ,M.Huzefa should become the part of playing XI.

Ghazi ghori is a quality wk bat but he should only be part of test team.
Maaz,Shehzad,Mehran,Arafat,Shamyl,Akif,Ubaid,Ali Raza can be all format players
Azab,Awais Anwar,Shahzaib should only be part of odis and tests.

I can see this playing Xi doing much better than the current lot

Shahzeb Khan
Maaz Sadaqat
Shamyl Hussain
Azan Awais
M.Shahzad
Ghazi Ghori
Arafat Minhas
Ubaid Shah
Usman Tariq
Ali Raza
Akif Javed
Which format are u talking about??

I think ammar and salman are a bit too raw to play for pak.

Pakistani will only become a good team again if players who come in don’t stagnate and continue to evolve and get better , the likes of Babar, Imam, Shaheen, Naseem and Shahab were very respectable new talents and had they continued to progress we would have had a very strong core who was entering their peak years but these chaps took their eyes off the ball started politics became lazy by avoiding red ball cricket and looked for short cuts by focusing on leagues while never taking care of their fitness if this culture continues with the next lot then nothing will change.

Musical chairs.

Another former tried and tested failure will come in to do their tenure. May also sign a 2 year salary agreement and pay-clause irrespective of termination.

It's the 20-30lac/month that these players and coaches aka sports politicians want to continue to do their monopoly.

Shameful.

Where is Awais Anwar did not play a single game in presidents trophy

Where is Awais Anwar did not play a single game in presidents trophy
Yeah I was thinking the same.He should have played unless he had some injury.
Maaz Sadaqat also played only 1 match in presidents trophy.

And who will take over , Pep Guardiola , this nonsense of sacking coach needs to stop rather take action on players

Is he a trundler or 140+ bowler??
Not express but he’s one of those who will rely more on height and movement then pace . 130 plus is good pace if you have skills and bowling brain otherwise you have a Haris Rauf on hand

And what is Mr. Azhar Mahmood doing behind the scenes for a long time now. He should also be kicked off immediately.

Things are getting extremely spicy now.
I can sense blood this time around.
After one week hoo haa they will say we don’t have back up for these stars so these losers will continue on their merry way leading to another disaster in next event

Major contributors in our icc tournament matches since 2022:
Pak vs Ind
Shan and Chacha score fifties.

Pak vs Sa
Chacha and Shadab score 60.

Pak vs Nz sf
Babar and riz score 50s but they left us in a hole hadnt haris rescued us.

Pak vs nz 2023 wc
Fakhar masterclass

Pak vs bd 2023 wc
Another Fakhar assault

pak vs sl 2023 wc
abd scores vtal ton.
Many would argue we won becoz of rizwan 100 but he was just accumulating as usual.Hadnt abd scored quickly we wouldve lost by over 100 runs.

Pak vs Ind 2024
Jitna kam kaha jaye utna hi theek hai.

Pak vs Usa 2024
Wouldnt have scored even 130 had Shadab not scored 40 odd.

So it has been 4 icc events and rizbar havent been able to win us a single match, thats utter mediocrity.
It good for Pct that they must be dumped forever unless they perform in domestics and agree to play for the team rather than themselves.
U19 players wouldve done a better job than these 2 statpadders.

Aqib was a disaster waiting to happen.

A selection committee with an umpire on it was a disaster waiting to happen.

But while he should go, many of these problems are from a rot set in years ago, and won't be fixed by an instantaneous change of coach.

Pakistan should try and find a dedicated white ball coach. Preferably a foreigner with a proven track record, preferably someone who has built one day and T20 teams and ideally someone who won international trophies as a coach, perhaps even a world cup. Someone like Gary K.....oh wait sorry that ship has sailed.

Sacking is not the solution.

Unless you change the system and bring honest people who want to make the change , nothing can happen.

Naqvi only solution after any loss is throw his toys out of the pram and sack the coach .
No self respecting foreigner will touch Pakistan expect Saqlain or Misbah type loser to take charge and the circus will continue
To be honest… Saqlain wasn’t bad

FB_IMG_1740483823694.jpg

What were PCB thinking, this guy use to host Football shows on local media a decade back.

What’s the point of cycling through numerous coaches and support staff if you guys are working with the same pool of players? At national level, coaching staff can only do so much - you need to hold the players and captain accountable.

Changing the coaches & selectors isn’t really going to change anything until the players are changed.

So many players have been called up who are not good enough or not played in there general position such as Tayyab Tahir at No.6 or calling up Rana Faheem Ashraf without justified reason.

No second spinners or another opener.

It would be great if they were sacked right in the middle of the tournament. I want to see them humiliated just like they humiliated the whole nation.

Rizwan and Babar will be dropped for foreseeable future, infact the latter might announce retirement as per social media.

Alas a top player wasted by PCB

To be honest… Saqlain wasn’t bad
He was garbage . Their was lot of player power during his tenure supported well by Ramiz they made Babar and Rizwan look like gods . Remember when Shadab was sent to captain vs Afghanistan and Shadab openly said in conference “ without Babar and Rizwan we are nothing “ . Basically saying our youngsters are crap .

This was a garbage performance by a garbage “team”. Anyone who watched the matches could see there was a o passion in the players, no intensity, no love for the game. There was no supporting each other. This wasn’t a “team”.

It was clear as day that Shaheen was playing for himself. He’s lost his edge and lost as a bowler and lost as a teammate. He needs a good mentor fast or he’s done as a big time player.

Babar has become beyond listless as a player and worse as a teammate. For being the “king” he’s the quietest player on the field and zero as a batsman. Yes he’s probably our best batsman (from an overall sorry lot). He’s definitely lost his desire and hunger for the game. It’s just so evident from his demeanor.

Rauf can’t bowl a good over when it’s needed. He’s a poor man’s Wahab. Abrar’s mystery is gone. The PCB should’ve had Mushy working with him constantly for the last year to grow his game. He’s still stuck in the same spot he was at debut. Zero growth in his game other than attitude.

The only spots moving forward should be Saim, Agha, Naseem. Throw everyone else back into domestic or they don’t get selected. Give them the India treatment. All of them need to spend time on the pitch instead of on social media. The constant glamourification of these players (by their own PR teams) needs to stop. I think Rizwan is still a good keeper but needs to be stood down as captain and pushed down the order. I’m as religious as he is but he needs to tone down religion on the field of play and get aggressive. He’s a support player at best and cannot carry a team.

Be Humble - Kendrick Lamar

That should be their motto.

This coaching staff has to go. It’s quite obvious that none of these coaches have vision. International coaching is a finishing school not a place to teach fundamentals. Coaches should be making tweaks to almost finished products and the Head Coach working with the Captain on strategy. Yet no one in the Pakistani cricket community possesses this skill. I think Wasim Akram could be a good CEO type Head Coach with full time assistant coaches under him but we know he won’t work with the PCB so maybe it’s time to dig deep and take a nobody from the domestic system and give it a shot. Maybe even give former selector M. Wasim a shot. He show some level of coaching skill in his only season in charge of domestic team. Honestly not sure where it goes from here.

But we all know unless you have connections to the sitting government, nobody of note is coming in to be the savior. It’ll be the same old faces.

And Finally, honestly, former player need to shut the F$&” up. It there seeing these problems suddenly but we’re blind when playing what does it say about them?

/rant

Sack the lot..

Coaching staff, captain, PCB Operational Directors and please also kick out,

1. Babar
2. Rizwan
3. Shaheen Shah Afridi
4. Haris Rauf
5. Naseem Shah

Coach could be Alex Ferguson but if the Rizbar and Shaheen remain in the team we all know the results.

And?...
Another selection committee?
Another loss?
Another selection committee?
Another loss?
And? ....

Only for the coach circus to continue. Waqar or Misbah will be back as the saviour of Pak cricket and the mercurial circus will continue.

Welcome back Misbah and Waqar.
Rinse and Repeat
Waqar is the reverse Booker T. He's getting ready to become 5 times failed coach after his previous 2 bowling coach and 2 head coach stints.

What Pakistan needs is a foreign coach but a low profile coach who will come without the baggage of expectations and will commit to the role full time ie willing to relocate to Pakistan and work with the national team players, U19 players, Shaheen, domestic players in the off season, someone who will closely monitor domestic tournaments and matches.

I would prefer someone like Hathrasinghe who is known to be a silent but a tough taskmaster

Pakistan Coach, Support Staff To Be Sacked After Champions Trophy Humiliation vs India: Report

Aqib should continue for at least one more year, there is no point in changing coaches after every series. Yes, around 6-7, players must be relieved forever including Babar, Rizwan, Shaheen, Naseem, Haris, Imam, TT.

But I know the way Pakistan cricket runs, Babar & Rizwan will once again open in upcoming T20s against NZ

One of the funniest hirings of all time has to be choosing Aleem Dar as a selector.

This decision was shocking even for the PCB.

Clueless buffoons. Changing coaches, selectors every 6 weeks.

Aqib could be the worst head coach selector for all I care. He needs to learn where he went wrong and fix it. Give him the next 18 months.

These 6 week stints have eroded the team beyond belief.

Players need to know that coach will stay and they need to perform or will be cut, in Pakistan it is the opposite .

After one week hoo haa they will say we don’t have back up for these stars so these losers will continue on their merry way leading to another disaster in next event
They will scrap a win against Bangladesh and all will be forgotten. This is a tale as old as time

We need someone who can instill win mentality in the team. Pakistan team and management have become too comfrotable with losses and seen every low possible. Getting knocked out in group matches of world tournaments by associate teams and losing to minnows in home series have made people numb to these failures. The leeches and opportunists will do what they have always done - promise to fix the system but then milk PCB until they are replaced with the next set of opportunists.

I don't know if having a foreign coach is the solution as they become ineffective in the environment they coach in with players unable to follow guidance and just the roadblocks they have to work around given how unorganized and unprofessional PCB is. The whole system needs to be uprooted and rebuilt. It will be painful but well worth it in the long run.

Every time we suffer a shameful defeat, the response is to apply a bandaid solution. Rehashing the same old people who have never won anything for Pakistan just exacerbates the problem

The selection committee and Naqvi should go first... Then we can talk about coaches.

So moving forward in LOI (ODI / T20) I would suggest the following individuals be immediately approached for a coaching role for our National Team

- Head Coach / GM: Mohd Hafeez
- Advisor / Mentor: Shoaib Malik
- Batting Coach: Kamran Akmal
- Bowling Coach: Sohail Tanvir

Not interested in there playing accomplishments but this coaching staff fully understands the requirements of modern day LOI cricket and all have played in the PSL too.

They also fully understand the nuances associated with our cricketers and PCB in general…

We need change in our game approach more than anything. Aggressive mentality is badly needed. Make Mike Hesson the head coach, shoaib akhtar bowling coach and mohammad hafeez batting coach. Make sure each and every centrally contracted player take cricket as their full time job. Ensure every player spends 8 hours in nets/gym on daily basis to upgrade their game and overcome weaknesses. Make them all robots and if anyone don't comply then throw him out.

Look frankly Pak LOI team is not bereft of talent.

If team can scout out

1) Get back fit and firing Shadab
2) Backup left armer for taking load off Shaheen
3) Develop Wasim jr, Abbas Afridi, Zaman to become consistent at intl level
4) One more proactive batter in top 4 to complement Saim and sandwich Babar and Rizwan.

Then it is a reasonably competitive outfit in white ball formats.

You lost me at Zaman. Guy is not even good enough for domestics.

The problem they have is everytime a tournament comes round, the selectors, coaches and captain default to sifarish :ROFLMAO:

Major rift within Pakistan team following Champions Trophy elimination involving head coach and captain, 4 star players' spots under threat

Mohammad Rizwan-led Pakistan Team's disastrous campaign in the Champions Trophy has drawn a whole lot of flak and criticism. Pakistan, whose performance in under strict scanner after Champions Trophy exit, signed off the tournament without winning a single match.

Adding to the already compounded woes to Men in Green, a report from Pakistan Cricket is doing round that the team is marred by an evident internal rift after their early exit from the group stage. Reports indicate a growing rift between captain Mohammad Rizwan and interim head coach Aaqib Javed. It has been learnt that the root cause of this crack is Rizwan's exclusion from key decision-making processes.

Pakistan's embarrassing campaign, leading to their elimination, has amplified the scrutiny on the reported friction. Specifically, concerns have surfaced regarding disagreements over crucial team selections, which have reportedly left Rizwan feeling frustrated and undermined. This internal conflict is believed to have played a big role in negatively impacting Pakistan's overall campaign. Despite the upcoming final group-stage match against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi, the focus has shifted to the internal dynamics that have contributed to their underwhelming performance.

The rift between Pakistan's captain, Mohammad Rizwan, and interim head coach, Aaqib Javed, extended to specific player selections, further exacerbating the team's internal tensions. According to reports, a key point of contention arose over the inclusion of Khushdil Shah, who was reportedly favored by Rizwan. On the other hand, Aaqib Javed strongly advocated for the selection of Faheem Ashraf. This disagreement, coupled with broader differences in squad selection strategies, is believed to have played a significant role in disrupting team harmony and adversely affecting performance. Ultimately, these internal conflicts, manifested in differing opinions on player choices, contributed to Pakistan's disappointing and premature exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

"According to sources, Mohammad Rizwan appeared frustrated due to a lack of consultation on key decisions. When he advocated for the inclusion of Khushdil Shah, Aqib Javed went ahead and selected Faheem Ashraf on his own. The selection committee and Mohammad Rizwan were clearly not on the same page," Cricket Pakistan reported.

Following Pakistan's disappointing exit from the Champions Trophy, PCB has reportedly announced a comprehensive review of the team's performance. This review has placed several senior players, including prominent figures like Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Haris Rauf, under scrutiny, with potential changes to the squad looming. Interim head coach Aqib Javed, despite facing criticism for his squad selections, has indicated he has no intention of resigning. However, it is widely expected that the PCB will relieve him of his duties.

The PCB's decision to conduct this review comes after revelations that Chairman Mohsin Naqvi had previously advised revisiting the squad composition on two separate occasions prior to the tournament. This advice, however, was disregarded, and Naqvi ultimately chose not to intervene. Now, the PCB intends to hold detailed discussions with the team management to identify and rectify the mistakes that led to their underwhelming performance. It is anticipated that these discussions will result in difficult decisions, as the PCB seeks to address the team's shortcomings and implement necessary changes.

Babar Azam's recent decline in form, which has persisted for over a year has already put him under strict radar. Despite Aaqib Javed and the selectors maintaining that they selected the strongest available squad, it is evident that the team is grappling with notable weaknesses, particularly in the opening batting, spin bowling, and all-rounder departments. Babar Azam's individual performances have been a major source of disappointment, with his contributions falling short of expectations.

In the crucial opening match against New Zealand, while chasing a substantial target of 321 runs, Babar managed only 64 runs off 90 balls. He then failed to click with the bat in the high-octane clash against India where he scored just 23 runs, contributing to Pakistan's six-wicket loss. The statistics underscore Babar's struggle, as his average across all formats has remained below 40 for the past three seasons, spanning from 2023 to 2025.

He is not accepting the mistakes, anyone who doesn't accept the mistake will never improve in future, Shan Masood at least accept mistakes so as Rizwan, but Aqib should be fired he is abysmal coach even at psl. We need mentor not a coach, we need to play natural game, nowadays there is too much coaching but players who are getting success are unorthodox, likes of Afghanistan, player like Bumrah, Maxwell, Duckett,Pant,Even New Zealand now play unorthodox cricket. You have to play in modern time your natural game. Our players, Srilankan players and Bangladesh players are too much coached. All Pakistani players are right now playing from u16 levels they are coached product.

What exactly is the solution at this point? You already fired the competent coaches you had and replaced them with Aaqib. You can't decide on a captain.
The entire PCB needs to get reset at this point. I don't think there's any kind of real trust in Pakistani cricketing leadership (and frankly any Pakistani leadership) at this time.
Players, coaches, board members, selection committee...it's all a giant shuffle game and it's all the same people making the same mistakes over and over again. No one ever learns anything. There is no learned experience on how to do things better.

All the good work that was done from 2013 to 2022 has been utterly wasted.

I also want to say this-I don't agree that the Pakistani team has been useless in the 21st century. Let's look at the reality
2007: ICC T20 final appearance
2009: ICC T20 championship
2011: ODI World Cup Semi Final
2016: Test Mace and #1 in Tests
2017: Champions Trophy Victory
2021: Beat India in ICC event, ICC T20 semis
2022: ICC T20 final appearance

That's three trophies, 3 finals appearances, and 2 semifinals. If an NFL team won three Super Bowls, appeared in three more Super Bowls, and made it to the conference championship twice more on top of that in 25 years we'd consider that a pretty solid track record for a sports team.

Pakistani cricket still has untapped potential or they wouldn't be achieving results like this. Cricket needs to be professionalized for sure. You need leadership who is focused on revenue and talent growth and is willing to reinvest in the right ways into Pakistani cricket. You need to get creative in holding more series. You also need to work on TV solutions and stop getting busted by television partners who hold the PCB hostage until the last minute.

Surely there's someone with some competence who can figure it out. It's not like Pakistan has no successful private businesses. Find a leader from there and let them work to transfer PCB over the next 5 years with no political interference from the Pakistani government and money (and results) will come pouring in.

Lol

4 players under threat? Na baby it will be the coaches+selectors who will be punished

Clueless PCB left for soul searching after finishing bottom in CT, add to it they also finished bottom in Test cricket.

We have to bring very young players like real U21 players even if they are lesser in talent compare to the current lot but there is a chance that they will improve when they play against International teams and we don't have to keep sticking with them , need to rotate them from a pool of 30 players and retain the performing ones even if we lose matches.
This nobody on this forum or pakistan have brains too understand blame the selectors coaches chairman and everyone else but not players who lost you 8 tournaments in a row

:ROFLMAO: Comparing with Super Bowl NFL... OMG :ROFLMAO:

Cricket barely has 6 competitive teams. How many are there in NFL??
Domestic Leagues are not same as national teams, players cant buy and sell their nationalities on an annual basis

Must say the lack of accountability from both coach & captain is shocking to me and it just shows the "protect myself at all costs" mentality. Coach blames lack of experience for the poor results and the captain blames not having Saim Ayub for their abysmal play. Imagine as a captain making excuses for not having one player that just made his ODI debut a few months ago for the team's failure. Truly pathetic & shameful stuff.

Neither one has had any inner reflection and stated we simply didn't play with intent. Losing matches or performing tournament is one thing but there was literally not a single ounce of intent. Senior players are supposed to lead from the front but they were the biggest culprits in literally not even trying to score runs and forcing lesser experienced players who don't have much ODI's under their belt try to take on the attack. The fact this team started the first match of the tournament by putting up 22 runs in the power play when chasing 320+ says everything you need to know.

If these guys tried playing aggressively and got out because the opposition bowled well, then at least it's more forgivable. No doubt nobody would be happy with results but at least your senior most players wouldn't look like complete cowards. What it shows is that there's a clear willingness to even acknowledge your own failures and it doesn't seem like these players will look to change their methods.

I would strongly consider just removing Babar & Rizwan from the team for an extended period of time until they show a willingness to adapt their game to reflect modern play style. Imam will be removed anyways so little point even bothering to mention him.
