Ireland's first Test match opponents are almost certain to be Pakistan, with the historic fixture set for Malahide next May. Cricket Ireland officials fly to New Zealand this week for an ICC board meeting where they will lobby for international fixtures for the next two years.

According to a well-placed source, Cricket Ireland hopes to use the Auckland meeting to tie down the Pakistan Cricket Board with whom it has had several months of discussions. "The interim spadework has been done," the source said.

Pakistan are touring England early next summer, with their first Test starting on May 24. A potential Test match in Malahide would likely start around May 10. The Asians are popular visitors to Ireland, where more than 13,000 people of Pakistani origin live. Another 2,000 reside in Northern Ireland.

The Test is expected to be of five-day duration, but Warren Deutrom last week backed moves to cut Tests to four days.

South Africa have asked permission for a forthcoming four-day fixture with Zimbabwe to be classed as a Test, and the Cricket Ireland CEO sees merit in the move.

"I think our answer might reasonably be defined as more pragmatic and less purist than, perhaps, some of the longer-established Test nations," Deutrom told a cricket website. "After all, we can hardly complain about compromising the traditional rhythms of Test cricket when Ireland hasn't played one yet. In fact, one might even argue that the four-day experiment is more likely to suit us given our familiarity with the Intercontinental Cup.

"Our chasing of Test status was driven by the desire to play the sport's pinnacle format, to give our players the option of realising that dream for Ireland rather than having to resort to England, not to mention the sheer status, opportunity for visibility and commercial potential that comes with being a recognised member of the front rank of cricket's nations.

"If that prestige and those benefits can accrue by virtue of a four-day game rather than five then I suggest it is an experiment in which Ireland would be happy to participate."

Ireland beat Pakistan at the 2007 World Cup, a result that sparked the resurgence of the sport and led to its elevation to Test cricket last June. Since that game the sides have met eight times, with Pakistan winning seven and one game, at Clontarf in 2013, ending in a tie.

Because of terrorism, Pakistan have been unable to play at home for six years, resulting in a slump in their fortunes. But an exciting crop of fast bowlers and attacking batsmen has lifted them recently, and they were worthy winners of the Champions Trophy in July.

There could even be a second touring side playing a Test in 2017, if reports from Zimbabwe are true that their players have been briefed about a possible visit to Ireland next summer.

Ireland visit the African nation in March for crucial World Cup qualifiers, when new coach Graham Ford will be in harness. Outgoing head coach John Bracewell is being allowed to serve out his contract into December, reducing the period Ford will have to prepare his side by three months.

I hope they decide to play 2 tests, it'll be worth it, we don't have much cricket to play in the next year, we should capitalize when we can.

Exactly what I wanted.A chance for our players to get back into test match mode after a long break.

Most of the days will get washed out, I've never ever seen a match in Ireland not affected by rain. Ireland should look to improve their ground drainage system because they cannot do anything about the weather.

That's really lame, why do we get these jobber sides to babysit like Ireland, Zimbabywe etc. We are the Champions of the Trophy for Pete's sake.

I think it’s because we want them to come to us

Good warm up before the big series vs ENG.

Much better preparation for England series than playing against some 2nd XI village team that's dished up in most tour matches these days.

Hope the rain stays away or at least Ireland's board invest in drainage to avoid repeat of the West Indies ODI fiasco when the weather was clear but no play could begin.

This is very good news if true. Will be good preparation for the England matches. Ireland will be a difficult place to go as Ireland may be better suited to the external factors such as the cold weather but I would still expect Pakistan to win.

Good preparation for the England tour. Also we could get Ireland to play in Pakistan and show that Pakistan is safe for test cricket.

The pitches in Ireland mean the ball moving around so it's actually ideal preparation for the England tour.

Malahide has excellent drainage. Pitch also tends to be fairly flat but we'll see at the match itself I suppose.

Early May a tad risky though......

Spoke with a Cricket Ireland guy earlier and this looks very likely.

Fantastic news if true. Hope it can be atleast a 2 match series if possible. Would be great preparation for the England series.

Will also be a historic moment with it being Ireland's first Test. Would be great to see Pakistan involved. Poetic as well since it will be just over a decade since Ireland's first major victory :)

I hope India also play a test match against Ireland before the England tests

Proud to be part of a nation whose contributions to cricket diversification far exceed those of any other in World Cricket, be it supporting associate members / newly inducted full members, lending players (UAE, Canada, Hong Kong and many other teams have an overwhelming majority of Pakistani expats) or visiting an isolated cricketing country (Sri lanka during conflict)

This is 1 area where I hope India can learn a lot from Pakistan. We used to do this till 2007, but after that BCCI has never done anything for Associates. I hope India too play a test match against Ireland next year so that we can do something for the former associate & new full member Ireland and also play Afghanistan in a test match in 2018 in India

Regarding the lending players part, that's upto the players themselves and not the cricket board. Lot of associate members have Indian expats or Indian origin players too

Irelands 1st test match win will come in their 1st ever game. Good introduction to test cricket.

Will be fun to see Hasan Ali bowling in those conditions, ball will be nipping around as it's Ireland and early in the year.

Any chance it is a 2 match series?

Will be fun to watch Pakistani batsmen against Irish seamers in their home conditions as well :))

Ireland: 143 all out
Hasan: 4-35
Pakistan: 389 all out
Haris Sohail: 131*
Ireland: 225 all out
Hasan: 5-53
Pakistan win by an innings and 21 runs

We saw that in the ODI against Ireland in 2016. Sharjeel Khan says hi.

Thats cos Malahide is generally a flat deck. If a Test takes place there in April though good lord who knows what'd happen

A Test in April though? Bit stupid tbh, unless we're talking late April and I mean like last couple days lol Temperature would be about 12 degrees during the day not to mention rain threat.

Hope its not April tbh. 1 I finish university early May and want to go to this game, 2 May is better all round weather wise and Id expect a fairly respectable crowd for this game compared to the attendances at other nations. In April run risk of rain just not drying up lol

The biggest moment in Ireland's cricketing history looks set to be staged in front of their home fans next year after the International Cricket Council confirmed they're close to finalising details of their inaugural Test match.

Ireland's first-ever match in cricket's most prestigious format is "likely" to be staged in Dublin against Pakistan next year, an ICC spokesperson confirmed to cricket.com.au.

It's understood talks between Ireland and Pakistan are ongoing over a Test being played in late April or early May, with discussions to continue at ICC meetings in Auckland this week.

While nothing has yet been officially locked in, the ICC said in a media release on Tuesday that Pakistan will play a "red ball" match against Ireland in April ahead of their two-Test tour of England next year.

A spokesperson for Cricket Ireland declined to confirm whether the Test has been locked in.

One thing is for certain; should the match go ahead, Ireland will have a significant home advantage when it comes to the prevailing weather conditions.

The average temperature for Dublin in April is a frosty eight degrees, which jumps to a balmy 11 in May, conditions far removed from the kind Pakistan is used to for their home games in the desert kingdom of the United Arab Emirates.

The match could also be limited to four days rather than the traditional five.

Cricket Ireland chief executive Warren Deutrom recently admitted the Test newcomers would be open to the concept, with Ireland having excelled in four-day games in the rung below Test cricket, the ICC’s Intercontinental Cup.

"We can hardly complain about compromising the traditional rhythms of Test cricket when Ireland hasn’t played one yet," Deutrom told Cricket Country last month.

"In fact, one might even argue that the four-day experiment is more likely to suit us given our familiarity with the Intercontinental Cup."

South Africa announced plans for an innovative four-day Test against Zimbabwe this summer and are hopeful the ICC will grant the match official Test status.

The ICC Test match playing conditions presently dictate that matches shall consist of five days, but Tests of varying lengths have been staged throughout history.

Early may wouldnt be to bad to have a test match, but conditions will likely to be pretty cold and conditions probably seamer friendly, but it will test pakistan team who are pretty mediocre in tests now.

Lets win it for woolmer! I still can't forget the day Ireland knocked us out the world cup.

I hope we dont play Ireland. Its gonna be onesided and would only make it unwatchable. We dont necessarily have to play them in order to help. We could send our A team to play their seniors and/or whenever they visit India( to play Afg or India) we can arrage some games against Ranji teams.
Last thing, its not BCCI's responsibility to help out anyone. ICC is there for a reason. BCCI should focus on to setup more academies that will help out youngsters.

Chiefs deny ICC claims over Ireland's first Test duel

Cricket Ireland insist the date and opponents for Ireland's first Test match are still not confirmed - despite the International Cricket Council saying that "Pakistan's next red-ball game would be in Ireland in April".

The declaration, unusually by the ICC, came in a media release following Pakistan's 2-0 series defeat by Sri Lanka, which concluded in Dubai on Tuesday, but Cricket Ireland's response yesterday was that it was "all speculation".

Performance Director Richard Holdsworth said: "We are in discussions with the PCB about hosting the Pakistan team for our inaugural Test match in Ireland, but as yet nothing is confirmed, despite speculation out there."

Cricket Ireland chief executive Warren Deutrom and chairman Ross McCollum are in Auckland this week for ICC meetings and they will be keen to nail down not just Ireland's first Test but also other fixtures for 2018.

What is confirmed is that Ireland will not be playing a home Test match in April as the club season does not start until the last Saturday, and the Ireland squad - only Boyd Rankin has Test match experience - would also need red-ball match preparation after returning from the five-week World Cup qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe, which is not due to begin until March.

Playing a full test against Ireland will be a better preparation for the upcoming series against England rather than playing some county sides who won't put up their full team

Now Ireland will get matches from Asian and other teams as practicing tour of England. Good for them.

India is due to visit England in month of June and will begin its tour playing ODI series. Test series will be played after the LOI series. So you see Indian team dont have open window to tour Ireland. Before England tour, we have IPL in April-May.

Horrible idea. We have nothing to gain. Ireland will be fired up as it's their first test. If we win, we'll probably not move in the rankings. But if we lose it'll cost us a lot of points as they are ranked so much lower than us. Not in favor of this move.

If u check the schedule, there is a 17 day window between ODIs & Tests. A possible test against Ireland can be done in that window

Id rather have us play County team than minnows Ireland, that would be ideal preparations. Plus its 3 months long tour, boys would use that long break to get some needed rest to prepare for test. No need to over work them. Remember what happened during Aus series, some of our players were legit tired and some were carrying injuries.

I can assure you, BCCI will never jepoardise that specially on overseas tour.

Any sensible person will want a official test against Ireland rather than play county 2nd XIs as a preparation for England tests

Yh against a team who are minnows at best!

Way to go for sensible fans.

Glad BCCI doesnt think like so called ‘sensible fans’

Looking at the above posts I really do wonder why cricket fans in particular have such a snobbish attitude towards other teams. No other sport has it to this extent..

Personally I've been pretty shocked by peoples reactions too. I was happy for Ireland and Pakistan as it will be Irelands first test and it will give Pakistan valuable preparation for the England tour.

Don't understand all the negativity. It is good that Ireland is getting to play their first test against a top team and also it will be a great preparation for Pakistan ahead of their tour.

Not me. I want India also to play a test against Ireland before the England tests as it will be a better preparation for us rather than play county teams
