Former captain Misbah-ul-Haq is in race to become the Pakistan coach after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) decided to sack Mickey Arthur and the entire coaching staff – bowling coach Azhar Mahmood, batting coach Grant Flower and trainer Grant Ludenafter – after the team’s below-par in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

PCB’s Cricket Committee, which met on Friday, were unanimous in their recommendations for the change. The recommendations were forwarded and discussed with the PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani.

A report in The Tribune said that Misbah Is likely to fill the spot left vacant following Arthur’s exit. The report also added that the new coach will be given a four-year tenure, till the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. However, the performance of the coach will be assessed on yearly basis.

Misbah played 75 Tests, 162 ODIs and 39 T20Is for Pakistan, scoring 5222 runs, 5122 runs and 788 runs respectively in the formats.

While Misbah is in contention to become Pakistan’s coach, former pacer Mohammad Akram is in race to become Pakistan’s bowling coach. Akram is currently the head coach of Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

The decision to sack Arthur was taken following recommendations made at the review meeting held by PCB cricket committee in Lahore on August 2.

“I am thankful to the PCB Cricket Committee for submitting their recommendations following an exhaustive and detailed review process. The committee comprised of individuals who possess tremendous acumen, experience and knowledge. The unanimous recommendation of the Committee was that it was time for new leadership and a fresh approach. I am happy to accept their strong recommendations,” Mani was quoted as saying in the release.

Mohammad Akram is a solid option for bowling coach position did pretty decently in his tenure with very limited talent he had at his disposal.

There needs to be more distance between misbah and coaching Pakistan
Should not of really played with current cricketers etc
But he would get us unbeatable in the uae again

This is truly a depressing news, hope Misbah won;t be picked up. With his negative and ultra defensive approach , he will be a negative influence on the team. He just does not want to leave Pakistan cricket alone. First he did not retire till he was 43, then he continued to play FC cricket and holding some youngster's spot, did not leave Islamabad united until recently and now he wants to be coach.

Misbah, please leave Pakistan cricket alone, thanks

I hope they pick Misbah so people who keep saying local coaches are needed see reality.

Woooohoooooo

Gonna start watching pak crickey again.

Great days ahead if this is true

Somebody stop Mickey, maybe his flight hasn't taken off yet.

Misbah would be great as a coach if we were in the 1990s....
But then again Pakistan had Wasim, Waqar, Anwar, Inzamam, Saqlain etc so a coach's job would have been easy.

I think sport journalists are promoting misbah for their own personal agendas.I take these news with a pinch of salt and it is just another masala news.

We going to miss Mickey and inzi. Both did an above average job with the resources at their disposal

Would be amazing for Pakistan Cricket if this news is true

Does Misbah have family?
I love cricket but seriously to the not to the point where my whole life is dedicated to only cricket. Misbah please spend some time with your family and friends and enjoy the you’d life.
Take a consultant job with PCB, but please not the head coach

Horrible news. It would be truly tragic to see Misbah back in the Pakistani cricket set up. He will undo whatever good Mickey has done. Terrible.

Misbah was also part of the committee that got rid of Arthur. Is this not a massive conflict of interest

Excellent news .Misbah will not be bad choice if moddy or hesson don't agree

Woooohoooooo

Gonna start watching pak crickey again.

Great days ahead if this is true

And i will stop watching Pak cricket if Misbah is picked. Hate to see Pakistan losing and people like Rahat Ali, Hafeez, ahmed Shehzad, Safraz become the mainstay of Pak team again under Misbah.

Isn't this a conflict of interest? The guy who takes part in the decision to sack the previous coach, ends up replacing him?

Secondly who in the right frame of mind will apoint a "m******r" as coach of the Pakistani team which is trying desperately to catch up with the world on how to play the modern odi and T20 format?

The first thing MISBAH will do is push BABAR AZAM from no.3 to no.5 to solidify the batting order.. Will play hafeez at no.3 for experience...

I do foresee a shuffling of the batting order... He criticize AMIR in the first game of the worldcup and praised hasan ali and wahab bowling pies at full pace... Asked why they picked Shaheen against SA when he should have been the new ball partner in the first place from game 1... His confidence went shaky after the england series on phatta wickets, then after the game against aus they persisted with him and dropped hasan ali, the confidence was back and was bowling well....

How come MISBAH be one of the person to sack MA and also the person to put himself forward for the same post...

Horrible news. It would be truly tragic to see Misbah back in the Pakistani cricket set up. He will undo whatever good Mickey has done. Terrible.

Cant agree more.. His calmness and silence will make things worse as it did before

Great news.

I wouldn’t mind him or Deano or Hesson.

Let’s hope all happens for the betterment of Pakistan cricket.

Captained the team to the bottom of the rankings and now will coach them to their.

If Pakistan were to pick the worst, the absolute worst person as coach, Misbah would make a strong claim for it.

misbah would be a great coach for the test team.

However, misbah had an old school approach to LOIs.

If he becomes coach, I see our test record getting better and our LOI record either staying the same or getting slightly worse.

The same guy who criticised the selection of Shaheen and Hasnain for the WC.

Can't wait to see Pak go back to oldies and bottom of the the rankings, with 250 scores.

Misbah needs to coach a domestic side first before applying for such a role. International coaching is not a place to be learning on the job.

Could be a good choice. As usual, people are making assumptions without any evidence.

Poor move by PCB. Arthur was a good coach and Misbah has never coached on any decent level in his life!

Terrible idea.

We have a young XI now when he comes he’ll make it prehistoric era XI.

He has a vendetta against youngsters because he himself was kept out for a long time in favor of youngsters.

Bitter pill to swallow for some.

Don't know if this is a good idea.

Pros: would probably bring a lot to the test side especially in asian conditions where he knows how to play (where there were signs Mickey didn't). Speak Urdu, so no language barrier, and is generally a good leader/manager of players.

Cons: Unproven, no real coaching experience not even PSL, was a bit oldfashioned when it came to LOI and did not have a good record as captain there, played with the current players too recently.

I'd love Misbah in advisory role, like tests consultant or batting consultant, who could advise the coach on certain matters like conditions in UAE. I definitely think he could provide value. And especially if he does this, we get the best of both worlds, a proven foreign coach and useful advice from a former captain who knows the conditions/test arena. But I think becoming new coach is too much at this stage.

If true, it's a great move.

Misbah is the only local guy who you can confidently say is suitable for this job.

Excellent leadership skills, top cricketing brain, well respected throughout the world, understands the local language, the domestic system, where to make improvements, tough on fitness.

And above all doesn't come with any baggage or politics.

People have no idea how important it is to have a coach which your players can actually understand.

It's horrible if your coach makes a speech.

You don't get a word of it.

Then you run to Imad or Shan Masood or Hafeez for the translation and try to figure out what the coach just said. The meaning and emotions are lost.

You can finally see us becoming a force in Tests again too under Misbah.

He's the man responsible for the rise of Islamabad United.

The only team that kept on giving chances to the most number of potential talent.

There's hope that Misbah can rescue the Pakistani team just like he used to rescue our fragile batting lineup.

All the best.

Only disadvantage I can think of is the fact he has never coached any side before.

Other than that, he can be given a try. He obviously knows many of these players quite well (having played with them before).

Sure, let's go for this. Let's take the team ten years back in time instead of moving forward.

Only in this country can Salman Butt be considered a victim and Misbah be considered a cricketing hero.

I like Misbah but I don't think he should be given the role of head coach, although I think it would be good if he got some sort of advisor role.

Under Misbah , this will be our ODI team
1-Azhar: ( yes Misbah will ask him to comeout of ODI retirement )
2-Ahmed Shehzad
3-Babar
4-Hafeez
5-Malik
6-Asif
7-Sarraz
8-Faheem Ashraf
9-Yasir Shah
10-Junaid
11-Rahat Ali.

They are not looking for a Head Coach to improve the skill set of players, therefore it's not mandatory that the HC has to have coaching experience. Check the add, they are looking for a HC for the strategic planning, who'll get the team trained by specialist Coaches - a role close to Soccer Manager than Cricket HC.

As if PCB itself follow any guideline. Misbah will bring our team to no. 9 in ODI. Great threat to our young players. Forget about any competitive cricket for next 10 years if Misbah becomes coach. He will destroy the current batch of young players and PCB has to wait for long time to find good players after his departure.

Misbah is universally recognised as the worst captain ever to tour Australia.

This is the man who opened the bowling in the third innings of a Test in Australia with Yasir Shah.

Less than three years ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coco the Clown is more qualified for this role.

Either people are naive or don’t have the best interest of Pakistan cricket. How can people support Misbah? This guy is a big hater of young players and want the team full of old players.

People supporting Misbah better watch veteran retired cricket league where there is no pressure to perform or winning. Just leave us alone. We want our team play with energy and competitive.

Misbah should coach one of the new domestic sides, prove himself as a coach and then be considered for the top coaching gig.

Thought Langer’s recent comments regarding readiness for the top coaching role were really instructive: "A lot of people don't know this: when Mickey Arthur got the job as head coach of Western Australia [in 2010], I applied for that job as well and that was literally straight out of the game," he says. "I thought, 'Oh yeah, I've got good leadership, I know the game, no worries.' But then Mickey got the job and I'm glad he did because I had to find some grounding somewhere else, and that was three years working with the Australian team, and I learned a lot of lessons then.

"When Mickey got the Australian job, I also applied for that, and I wasn't ready for that, but I still applied because people kept saying, 'You've got leadership and you know the game, so you should apply for it.' It was a a really tough experience going through that process. I'm glad I went through it, and I'm also glad I didn't get the job then, because then I had six years at Western Australia. There's no way I could've done the job I've done for 14 months without having that six years' experience.

"It couldn't have been better grounding. It was all the same issues, all the same problems, just with less scrutiny. I've learned how to deal with it and I feel confident to deal with people, game situations, game plans, cricket. But what I had to learn was the scrutiny of the job, and that's just another part of my evolution as a coach.”

He doesn't even have any experience and you're going to put him to the very top coaching seat?

All TTF's rejoice.Hafeez bhai had inside info on this thats why he didnt resign.:abbas1

- Take It Lighty -

Hafeez bhai in 2022. Officially retired. Telling his story to the world.
"I was on a verge of retirement after 2019 WC, but Misbah bhai called me and said why you want to retire? You have still good years ahead of you. Be brave and stand your ground. If it wasn't for Misbah I wouldn't have made that century against Sri Lanka in 2020"

I really hope it’s an Indian masala news. No sane Pakistan fans will accept Misbah as next coach. We are here to see young players performance not Veteran 40 plus age oldies.
If PCB wants Misbah as coach they will never advertise for Head coach position. It will be just waste of time and money.

It would be hilarious if he's appointed given that he doesn't even meet the requirements set out in their job description for this role, i.e. minimum three years experience in a similar role at international or domestic level. In many ways, it would be emblematic of the way our prime minister has been making decisions since being elected.

Just because he was a defensive batsman, does not mean he will be a defensive coach and choose defensive minded players lol.

He is smart, knowledgeable and educated. He knows cricket is a different game now. He will manage his tactics and pick players according to the format.

Misbah could well be a cheap option to hire but he lacks experience. I personally think we should give a coach from NZ or England a chance who have a strong CV in managing county clubs. Bring Misbah in as a assistant or something so he can be the student.

I trust Wasim Khan’s appointment.

I’m glad common sense has prevailed among the PPers, as evident from the Poll with 70% not in favour of his appointment.

He was the main culprit for Pakistan’s disastrous ODI results in the first half of 2010s, which consequently led to the side slipping into 9th in the rankings.

His accomplishments in the UAE are overstated. If Sarfraz had the services of Ajmal’s chucking and YK’s ATG batting against spin, his test record in the UAE would surely have been very similar.

Misbah did more harm to Pakistan due to his defensive and ultra conservative approach to the game. He was tactically inept in ODIs and overseas tests. This would be a recipe for disaster. If he becomes coach, I will stop watching Pakistan cricket because it doesn’t take a genius to figure out the doom and gloom he would cause to the side.

I have no problems if Misbah wants to coach a domestic team but him making the jump to the national side is simply unwarranted for an individual who hasn’t embraced the modern brand of cricket.

I will never forget the humiliation he received from Ian Chappell, due to how brutally exposed he was during that tour.

Kudos to the Channel 9 commentary team for having the cojones to call him out.

Indeed even Coco the Clown is more competent for this role.

Misbah as a captain and as a player was a big failure, all over the world except UAE. At UAE he got some success thanks to his buddy the chucker Saeed Ajmal and another chucker, Hafeez. He used UAE success to prolong his career and caused us lots of embarrassment , particularly down under.

And Younis Khan, who was an ATG bat against spin bowling.

Pretty spot on .i agree with that

Misbah was a defensive player, a very defensive captain, but for some strange reason he will not be a defensive coach, really ?

Best local and overall option as of now.

Hope he applies.

Need to start winning again, been too long we haven't tasted what victory and especially Test victory feels like.

How is he the 'best' option when he hasn't been coach of any professional team in his life, yet?

Are the alternatives peasants?

He is definitely a better option than Mohsin Khan, though.

So Misbah was part of the committee that sacked Mickey and now wants that job - strange.

Has led several teams, and has heaps of leadership, management experience.

Formal coaching courses aren't needed for top candidates. E.g. Shastri was hired without any formal coaching course.

What matters is the person and their abilities.

Yes really.

You got Defenders and Goalkeepers becoming coaches. Have they all used defensive players in their playing 11? Have they ALL used formations which consists of 5 defenders at the back? No.

Why would Misbah encourage his players to be defensive in a T20 or ODI format knowing such philosophy won’t work in modern day cricket? Please use your common sense and look at the wider picture.
