Former Pakistan head coach Mickey Arthur was assured by an influential group of cricketers that he would be retained for another two years after the World Cup but Prime Minister Imran Khan rejected giving extensions to the coaching staff.

According to a highly reliable source, an influential member of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s Cricket Committee and some other officials in the board had assured Arthur he would be getting an extension as head coach despite Pakistan’s failure to reach the knockout stage of the World Cup.

“Arthur was very confident after these assurances that is why he came down to Lahore and spent quite a few days in anticipation of an extension but he was also disappointed and shocked when the PCB announced they were not retaining him or the support staff,” the source said.

According to the source, PCB chairman Ehsan Mani had spoken to Imran Khan who is patron-in-chief of the PCB on the matter and the former skipper made it clear that a new team management set-up must be brought in after the World Cup.

Arthur also got a shock when the local media started reporting that when he appeared before the cricket committee he had suggested appointing Shadab Khan and Babar Azam as captains for white and red-ball cricket.

Arthur has now apparently conveyed to skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed that he never said anything against him nor did he give any suggestions to the committee on appointing new captains for all formats.

“Arthur has communicated to Sarfaraz that media reports about him talking about changing the captain were not correct,” the source said.

It was good decision.

If you want to progress need to make fresh start with fresh set up.

When will the PCB be banned by the ICC for government influence? what’s the point bringing the likes of Wasim Khan in if the PM is just going to make decisions himself.

I’m not arguing the merits of Arthur’s contract not being extended but this is pretty unprofessional and annoying.

I doubt the PM has the time to be worrying about these type of decisions. He barely follows cricket anyway.

Not a good decision. The PM of the country shouldn't be indulging in such matters.

Yes he might be an ex cricketer, but he should not b entitled to make decisions here. Imran doesn't even follow cricket that much

This decision should had been taken by Ehsan Mani after consulting with the Cricket Committee.

A guy who keeps no tabs on Pak cricket, just watches few mainstream matches and he ends up making such decisions?

Its like how Imran once said that Umar AKmal should bat in the upper order :))

Anyways, pathetic stuff by the PM, but then again what to expect

Btw its not about whether Mickey's coontract should be extended or not, its about why PM made decision here

Seems a like a made up story. The newspaper is the Hindu and there is no mention of the who gave this information, just says 'source' .

Prime Minister is a Cricketing legend. Mickey Arthur thought that he was entitled to a 2 year extension.

Read the title carefully it said "Reports".So don't know why so much hate for khan when this is barely a rumour

Assured by a "influential group of cricketers"

Wow! So was any actual PCB official involved in this assurance? Or just a bunch of random ex-cricketers?

Also, this kind of guarantee makes no sense. there is nothing to gain, why not just wait till after the WC...

This stinks of fake masala news from The hindu

Most people here don’t realize this but the patron in chief of PCB is the leader of the country which is of course the PM constitutionally. PCB is not an elected or independent body so ICC can do nothing about it or has nothing to do with the governance of the game in Pakistan. That’s not ICC’s mandate.

Whether the decision is right or wrong is a separate debate but I am just talking about the legality of PM Khan making such decisions.

Imran Khan has no business making or indeed even figuring/being consulted in such decisions. Patronship is just a figurehead post.

He has a country to run, he should concern himself with other important matters as elected head of state.

It is cringe-worthy enough that he feels need to compile public point by point unneeded "advice" on a forum like Twitter for the national cricket captain ahead of a big game. Such shameless grandstanding undermines both captain, team management and board.

Nothing stopping mickey Arthur from reapplying. If he turns out to be better then the other candidates. He should be able to get the position again

thehindu is an excellent newspaper that sets the standard for journalism in South Asia (along with DAWN)

Source is actually PTI.

Obviously talking to someone in PCB but whether the person they spoke to made it up or not is the question.

Doubt if IK has the time or energy to worry about personnel changes in PCB.

PTI stands for Press trust of India not the Pakistani political party/

You dont perform, you go. PM or not, that should have been the order.

I am more concerned about those "influential group of people" making Mickey daydream.

Seems like the users that believed the stories about Arthur and the Chinese whispers of Shadab, Babar and Sarfraz are also going to believe this...

Take this report with a pinch of salt until a reputable Pakistani newspaper publishes it.
