The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed Shahid Aslam as the new batting coach of the national cricket team

The appointment came after the Pakistan team's batting struggled during their recent tour of Australia.

In light of these issues, the PCB has decided to appoint a permanent batting coach, and Shahid Aslam has now been confirmed for the role.

A PCB spokesperson confirmed that Shahid Aslam will accompany the team on upcoming tours to Zimbabwe and South Africa as the batting coach.

The board is also in search of a new spin bowling coach, and this appointment will be made soon.

Shahid Aslam has previously been part of the team’s support staff for several years. He is well-known for his expertise in coaching batters and is especially famous for his hours of throwing down practice balls for players.

Interesting period definitely since the debacle of Bdesh Tests, we've beaten the Ashes rival in different formats keep going Pakistan cricket 🇵🇰

Mr. Chairman is out of options. Brought Aqib as Coach. Brought back Wahab as Manager and promoted Shahid as batting coach.

No one on the outside is willing to join hands with PCB right now

The same old guy is back. Under him nobody improved as a batter. He is not a batting coach actually he is appointed to do throw downs , more convenient stuff for Aaqib

Saqlain will,be back as spin bowling coach too.

More signs that champions trophy will move away from Pak and this clown chairman will be gone soon. And again search of new coach captain selector manager will start

Country itself is like that , how can they expect PCB to run things in order

He's too busy. Need to crackdown a certain party

If that's his most celebrated qualification it's a sad indictment of coaching credentials in Pakistan.

Is the same guy?/

is this the same guy?

back in 2006 he was remodelling the actions of chuckers. Now he is batting coach. He must be very very talented.

Yep has grown bread and moustaches now

The bowlers have been divided into four regional groups. Footage of their actions will be recorded at the NCA in Lahore on July 7 for bowlers from Lahore and Sialkot, under the supervision of Shahid Aslam, at the National Stadium in Karachi on July 9 for bowlers from Karachi, Hyderabad and Quetta under Anwer Khan, at Khan Research Laboratories Ground in Rawalpindi with Aquib Javed on July 9for bowlers from Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Abbottabad and at Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad on the same day for bowlers from Multan and Faisalabad with Nazir Junior.

snippet from article in 2006.

But my thing is this, can he teach Rizwan anything he does not know? Rizwan has been playing cricket for many many years.

Besides the sarcasm, can coaches generally teach this team anything? This team needs a mental conditioning coach rather than a batting and bowling one. For the batsmen with poor techniques and shot selection, they can have individual or group mentors, but I don't always see the overall role of a coach for this team. The batting coaches for the last few years probably just bowed down to Babar while someone like M Yousuf probably taught the sloggers how to tuk.

The problem with this team is their mental strength. Not knowing HOW to bat, but rather having the guts and capability to score at whatever run rate at will and not falling under pressure. One coach might come with some tips on finding the gaps but then the next coach 6 months later might disagree with whatever methodology might have been employed by the previous one. It's just musical chairs over here.

This bloke is famous for giving throw-downs, everyone on PP should apply for the job to then am sure you’ve given plenty of throw-downs to some bacheh in the back garden over the years.
Him excelling at repetitive throw downs for hours make me think he may not have a very high IQ. That's just my psychological perspective

Shahid Aslam came into limelight when Hafeez was continuously being embarrassed by Dale Steyn, he was the batting coach of Pakistan team during that era.

All the suspects from Taufeeq Umar, Khurram Manzoor Ahmed Shehzad are the students of Shahid Aslam.

So they appoint a guy who is already part of the coaching staff to help with the batting struggles of the team. What a move!

When he use to play for wapda he was a bowler. A rfm? He was honestly a pathetic batter and 99% of his coaching stint has been focused on bowling and fielding?

Now he's a batting coach 🤣🤣🤣.

They need to hire batting consultants focussing on clean power hitting and high SR. Didn't England hire a baseball batting coach once?

If he knows how to fix RIZWAN, Babar, others and make them hit boundaries, then it makes sense.

Can he do it though.

Shaihd Aslam was never a proper batter , even for whatever little FC cricket he played, he was a tailender and never knew how to hold a cricket bat properly. No question , PCB is a bunch of jokers .

Thank god Mike Hesson doesnt coach Pakistan

Some really ridiculous comments here

How many of you have been coached by Shahid Aslam? None, and yet every is giving comments as he is some buffoon.

Shahid Aslam has been an assistant batting coach for a long time. Infact, often he been part the team management for assistant batting coaching. Guy is renowned Pakistan coach.

He has worked his way up, and has gotten the batting coach position which he deserves for his years of service as an assistant coach

Extended interview of him on YouTube if you want to know more about a qualified pakistani coach
Sana mir also speaks very highly of him for helping her overcome her demons
Alot of players talk highly of Shahid Aslam.

As for throwdowns. Yes there are specialist thrown down coachs, india carries one with them. Throw downs are not very simple you need someone with accuracy and a strong arm to do this job.

Maybe shahid aslam started as a throwdown coach, but the guy has worked his way up

More misery for Misbah critics, as Shahid Aslam is the one from tuk tuk brigade close ally of misbah ul Haq, waqar younis

He has been with the team for a long long time. From being a throwdown coach to the batting coach, the journey has been fantastic. LOL

Not sure what he is gonna improve in these batters.

Yes he has masterminded the technique of many Pakistan batsmen a prime example is Muhammad hafeez :steyn

He started off as a bowling coach and helped players correct their actions and now years later is batting coach?

Most coaches don't follow this type of trajectory.

Even if we assume he's a world class batting coach, what will it realistically do?

Logically Yousaf should be the best batting coach that Pakistan has ever had, as technique and timing wise he's clearly the best.

The rest like inzi, or Younis all have weird techniques. They made it work for themselves but they won't be able to transition it towards other players.

The likes of saim, Imam, Abdullah, Babar, and even lower order players such as chacha, Agha and basically any orthodox batsmen should have benefitted greatly from yousaf.

Only players with their own style such as fakhar, Usman Khan etc etc wouldn't be applicable.

However what did it do? Imam is still a bunny towards the short ball and can't play pull shots to save his life, Which is funny cause yousaf was excellent at pulling it.

Then Babar is a bunny against spin even though Yousaf was literally the king of backlifts, late cuts etc etc?

These boys don't listen. Plain and simple. Of a world class orthodox batter like Yousaf can't get these guys to improve, Then a fraud bowling coach who can barely hold the bat won't be able to do a damn thing.

coach is separate from playing career. India for example had a great bowling coach who was a rubbish bowler himself. Otis Gibson and a few others have been decent coaches despite having mediocre players.

In Pakistan we tend to think the bigger the player the better the coach. It's hardly the case.

In this instance I don't have an issue with Shahid Aslams playing career. It's just that his coaching seems to mixed between whether he is a batting coach or bowling. He seems to be one of these permanent employees that PCB has that move from role to role.

I agree coach is separate from playing careers, but my point was that no batting coach for pakistan in the modern era has been able to achieve anything and this guy won't be any different.

If players like Imam are still struggling against short balls since his 2018 debut, Chacha is still struggling against wrist spin, Babar is still struggling against all forms of spin, rizwan is still unable to play offside strokes etc etc

Then it honestly doesn't matter. ^^ with the exception of Babar, None of these players have improved since their debut and none of their technical issues have been worked on.

Babar is the only one who started off with a shaky umar akmal like stance which transitioned into a straight orthodox batting stance and he developed his cover drive plus backfoot dab down fine leg against pacers.

However since 2021, he stagnated with no improvements. Can't sweep, Can't play late, horrible backfoot against spin, zero lofted strokes against pace etc etc.

When players, who have worked under him , talk highly of him, who are we to critisize?

If Misbah can be a coach, selector and manager at the same time , why not this tailender can be a batting coach .Merit has no place in PCB's constitution , sifarish is what matters. I'm sure he can help Babar with his weakness against spin bowling, way to go PCB.

Our players will talk highly about those that give them leeway and criticise those that make them work hard.

I don't know anything about him or his credentials. I just would like to understand how someone working with bowlers to correct actions can then become a batting coach, how did he make this transition.

Lots of harsh comments on this post. Shahid has been with this team for a while and lots of players have credited him. If this was some xyz coach from Aus we would not say anything. Seems like lots of people are bitter and bashing him. An accredited coach who has been working from the grassroots up has been promoted to the national level. Sounds like a good thing.

The article was from 2006. Should we call continue doing the same things we were in 2006. He was probably involved in the rehab program is some way.

It doesn't rule him out. It's just an interesting journey and one I'd be more keen to learn more about but the details around his capabilities aren't well published.

People love to worship the white skin. Even if a nobody from any white country is appointed, they will be in awe.

We don’t value our own people, unlike India which is now THE cricketing powerhouse, have the best teams, all supported by local coaches.

Need to learn from IND and keep giving chances to our own people.

Another yes man for Aqib Javed. Pakistan cricket is at the mercy of an incompetent person like Aqib and it will end in tears for him within 12 months.
O wow. What great insight. I hope you did not by accident read that Aqib's tenure as Coach is fixed till CT25 only.

Are there some form of coaching badges in Pakistan? The reason coaches from Aus or England get more credit is because there are well respected coaching courses which need to be taken to show you have reached a level where you can coach others. If that is similar in Pakistan, are they universally recognised?

Bro, no player will talk highly of an assistant coach. Assistant coaches go unnoticed alot of times.

I dont know his work with bowlers, but for years i have seen him work with batters, and he has been creddit by many players in their interviews.

Now just because fans dont know about him, or have lack of knowledge, doesnt give us the right to make fun of Shahid Aslam. Like im not calling you out, but i find it weird how a few posters/mods are having a go at a guy whose work they themselves dont even know.

Shahid Asalma has accreditation from Australia Cricket. Both in Batting and Bowling. He also has ECB Level 3, has also done an ICC course. Also the PCB coaching courses were made in partnership with Cricket Australia.

Interesthingly, he did these courses of Cricket Australia and ECB in 2001 and 2005. So he was one of the earliest Foreign accredited coaches of Pakistan.

Infact, i think, the coaching courses that PCB conducts are now conducted through him.

I think Shahid Aslam has some coaching badges. Also, all these people making harsh comments have not bothered checking his credentials. If instead of Shahid Aslam we had some unknown white guy, we would not make much of a fuss.

Ok then he must have some basic knowledge at a decent level so that is at least some form of qualification. Since Pakistan does not have it's own well established coaching programs then we should accept this is as good as we will get without resorting to foreign coaches.

Thank you for the details. Seems he has some merit. Hopefully he can be successful
