[Reports] Shoaib Akhtar to be appointed Chief Selector - Wise move?

If superstars exist in Pakistan domestic cricket as you claim, everybody sure has done a stellar job in them not even getting a whiff of international cricket.

Either that, or there are no such superstars at all. The latter is more believable.

There are decent enough players in the system that can form a formidable LOI side.

Test quality superstars are definitely not there.

Best option for CS's role is Mohammad Wasim.

Best squad selected by PCB during last 10 years was the one for emerging Asia cup 2019 which Pakistan won (whole PP loved that squad which is rare) and I believe Wasim had a major role in that as member of junior selection committee.

They will need to slash Misbah's salary

But if the claws mentioned that he will be entitled to get full salary for 3 years regardless stay in job or not than PCB cannot do anything. What a waste of money!!!!!

If true it would go down as one of the most hoshyar and daler decisions ever taken by PCB.

Moh Wasim will still be part of the selection committee as the head coach of Northern region. I think Shoab (If he is being appointed) has a really good relationship with Moh Wasim since younger days as they both played in Pindi region. You are right he has been really impressive as a selector and as a coach as well and is one of the best upcoming local coaches. I wont be surprised if he gets a role related to selection or national team in next few years.

No plans of sacking Misbah as chief selector: PCB sources

KARACHI: It appears as if the clouds of uncertainty that have been looming over Misbah ul Haq’s future as chief selector for the past few days are finally fading away. Misbah will stay as chief selector of Pakistan men’s national team, Dawn has learnt.

According to a reliable source in the PCB, the reports of replacing Misbah as chief selector are absolutely ‘baseless’.

“We have neither discussed it, nor it is in our plans. It’s a completely baseless story,” a well informed source told Dawn.

It was first reported by the Press Trust of India (PTI) on Aug 22 that Misbah might be asked to step down as chief selector in order to focus on his job as head coach. After which, the story was picked up by the local and international media. Social media and local media have been abuzz with rumours that a former “fiery, outspoken fast bowler” might replace Misbah as the chief selector.

This latest development, however, has put all such rumours to rest.

Mohammad Wasim has been fantastic in recent years. Definitely one to look out for as a future national team coach or selector.

I think his route is the pathway PCB must set up for future coaches - earn your reputation at the domestic level, hone your craft, and then work with the national team once you have showed that you are successful as a coach. In the past, we have not followed any such pathway, providing coaches a direct avenue to the top without developing their skills domestically.

With the NHPC set up and coaches working at the first XI, second XI, and PSL levels, supervised by a national review system undertaken by the PCB, there is finally work going on at the grassroots to help coaches prove their merit.

Wasim Khan and Ehsan Mani have made some mistakes (such as Misbah) but overall I believe they have been a huge positive as one of the best PCB admins in years, bringing structure into the setup. Though we do not yet know whether this setup will indeed be successful, professionalism seems to be a key aspect of it and I believe that is in itself a success. I list 2023 as the date by which we should see a sudden uptick in quality in the system.

Well put.

I even created a thread around a year ago that development of local coaches is as important as developing players. If we see all the successful systems like Aus, NZ and now even Eng as well they develop their coaches and give them coaching of domestic sides. If they do well then they are rewarded highly by giving them role with the national team. Darren Lehaman, Justin Langer, Mike Hessen, Silverwood just to give a few examples.

In the previous structure PCB has never rewarded a single coach by giving him promotion to national team for similar position. I hope this changes soon, as if you want to hire a local coach then it has to be through the domestic system in place.

Exactly. Think of it this way: when Mickey Arthur was sacked, how many domestic coaches were knocking the door down to replace him? I’m not surprised that we turned to Misbah — we simply hadn’t developed any coaches in domestic who had showed exemplary ability in grooming youngsters and solidifying their team into a unit. There was no review system in place, neither was there any incentive for coaches to perform well.

It is important to note the importance of the 6-team system here which heavily filters quality. At the time, even Mohammad Wasim had yet to coach and lead Northern to win Pakistan’s National T20 Tournament, or stage a first-class comeback from the bottom of the 6-team table all the way to the finals of the 2019 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. With a smaller number of teams, you are now able to more easily implement an effective review system, filter your best coaches down to the best 6 in the country (rather than best 20 in the previous system), and then finally give these coaches authority as selectors, which enhances their focus on developing youngsters. If they fail to do so, they get sacked like Ijaz Ahmed Jr. with Central Punjab.

With a few years of this system in place, we will definitely see Justin Langers and Darren Lehmanns coming through on the back of credentials and merit. IA.

PCB will give everyone some job except our homie Danish Kaneria.

moh wasim has been great for northern, given young players chances, has had a good mix of aggression and defense. as a northern supporter was v happy with his handling of the team.

Questions:

1. Wise move? Yes ( he speaks alot on TV and YouTube channel )
2. Is he capable of doing this job (yes he is)
3. Does he know enough about our cricket (definatley more that the current lot)

Finally:

What will happen to his Youtube channel? (he will be sacked with in no time because of that :-D )

Worst possible decision that the pcb could ever make.

We are going to pre 2010 days, when the likes of akhtar would create ruckus and go on doing whatever they wanted.
This guy is bad for any organization. He will say something dumb or do something and the whole pcb office would be in news.

A selector should be someone with patience. If a naseem shah doesnt perform the selector still gives him 10 chances. Shoaib akhtar is a type of impatient guy who will throw you out of the team mid game.

He will need to attend meetings, can he do that? He will be incharge of taking tough decisions, can he do that?
There is dofference between a man who goes out and make beutiful speeches and a man who acts as a good administrator.

Cant believe misbah is about to be replaced with this guy.

Saj was right, pcb is saving itself from criticism by hiring its critics

Apart from the England series, Misbah chopped and changed 6-12 players in every single T20 squad he selected. Relatively, during Sarfaraz/Inzy days our T20 squad was fairly fixed and it was showing results (Remember the #1 ranking). So it is a huge blessing that the clueless Misbah would be replaced.

Now the thing that i truly want is Misbah out as head coach so that the defensive mindset leaves with him. You can't appoint a lamb as a coach for bunch of tigers.

Shoaib Akhtar's youtube channel shows one thing that he knows a lot about grass roots levels and where to look for talent. If i am not wrong, Lahore Qalandars hired him during several talent hunts and he was the one who uncovered dilbar and haris. Lets see how he fares now.

I think these are just rumours. There is no way the PCB would have agreed to have such an outspoken individual in their ranks

Agreed pluss he goes searching for talent I belive we should hire him but he should be given atleast 2 years if not 1 no point hiring him for 6 months

It’s probably better that the news is not true. I think, Shoaib can do the job - he has the technical knowledge for it, but I am not sure if he has the personality or focus for it. Scouting job needs lots of dedication, patience & long term vision - my hunch is if he were appointed, he would have made lots of noises to start with ... then quit within few months.

Completely agreed. Give him 2 years and you may see the difference.

Looks like PCB is really really pleased with Misbah's performance!!!!!! Thanks to rain to save us from 3-0 defeat. Won't be surprise if PCB will offer him with some extra benefits or pay increase.

Indeed, he is probably the best man for the job.

Last time England won a test series against Pakistan was the famous spot fixing series in 2010
