1. Two reasons. First. Because Misbah has received excellent reviews as coach from the players, while the selection policy has been horrid from the beginning. Second. It is extremely turbulent for the team environment to remove two positions at once, the head coach position especially.
Pakistani players are bunch of mediocre losers who are ranked 7th in Tests and 6th in ODIs. Their comfort-level with a particular coach is not a good enough justification by any means to keep that coach in job.
You can have a poor coach and a poor set of players and they will go along well with each other and the players will provide excellent reviews. That however does not mean that this mediocrity should be allowed to continue because the team spirit is high amongst defeats.
A coach is supposed to be evaluated based on results and not appraisal provided by failed players. If this is how Wasim Khan operates and decides to keep or sack a coach then he is clearly not up to the task.
The opinion of non-performing players should be the last factor to determine the future of a coach.
2. How do you know they have arrived to this conclusion? It is clear they believe the combination does not work with Misbah as selector.
Because they have disbanded the dual role after only one person on job. How can you possibly know if the system is the problem or the person when you only try one person?
You go through 4-5 different people in the dual role and then you assess how the system works. Again, you cannot have an experiment with only one sample.
You give examples of lightbulb and iPhone. When Edison patented the first commercial lightbulb in 1879, he had to try numerous times before he finally succeeded.
If Edison was Wasim Khan, he would have been abandoned the innovation after just one experiment and concluded that it was not a good idea.
When Steve Jobs started to explore the idea of the iPhone in the early 2000s, many people within Apple were skeptical about the concept because they were not convinced with the idea of a touchscreen phone without a stylus.
If Wasim Khan was Steve Jobs, he would have abandoned the idea after the first worker at Apple would have rejected the concept.
Your flawed assumption and premise forgets to consider that they might be retaining him temporarily longer in the team as coach in the interest of stability, as opposed to making the affirmation that he is a good coach. But even as far as that goes, coming out of the England tour, all players gave a lot of credit to Misbah for the way he managed so many personnel.
You have mentioned stability and turbulence. What instability and turbulence would take place if Misbah is removed as coach? Would Babar resign as captain and stop scoring runs? Would Rizwan forget how to keep? Would Shaheen forget how to bowl?
Would we start losing matches left, right and centre since we are winning so much under Misbah?
Pakistani players who gave credit to Misbah after the England tour bolted a winning position in the first Test with the most brainless display and expected a royal thrashing in the third Test because of rain.
Moreover, they couldn’t even win the T20 series against a significantly depleted England side without 4-5 key players.
How is their opinion relevant? It is not. As I said earlier, you can have a loser team and a loser coach who have each others backs because they get along well. That does not mean that they should be allowed to continue with their mediocre ways.
You talk about stability as of Pakistan is performing well and if Misbah is sacked they will suddenly start losing.
Our results under Misbah have been absolutely terrible and we have even lost matches (T20s vs Sri Lankan reserves at home) that we used to win with ease in the past, even though Misbah has had the luxury to pick his own team and make his own combinations with a free hand.
Do you really think he deserves to continue as coach based on the results that he has produced?
So back to the original point. What’s your problem with innovation? And why is it wrong to course correct when certain aspects of the plan don’t work out? You sound like a PMLN supporter speaking about U-Turns... oh wait...
I have no problem with innovation and I have no problem with taking U-turns either. However, there should be some logic and rationale behind taking U-turns.
The way Wasim Khan has thrashed the dual role after trying only 1 person in the seat is completely illogical and irrational, because there is no way to tell if Misbah was the problem or the system.
If he would have tried 4-5 people in this dual role and then taken a U-turn, I would have had no reservations because it would have been a decision based on logic and reason.
If I sound like a PMLN supporter then you sound like a PTI supporter who blindly defends his leaders with no logic.
