Two London attackers named by police

Khuram Butt (left) was known to police and the security service

Two of the men who carried out Saturday night's terror attack in London have been named by police.

Scotland Yard said Khuram Butt, 27, from Barking, east London. was known to police and MI5 but there was no intelligence to suggest an attack.

The other attacker was named as Rachid Redouane, 30, from Barking.

The pair and one other man were shot dead by police after killing seven people and injuring 48.

They drove their hired van into pedestrians on London Bridge before stabbing people in the area around Borough Market.

A vigil is being held at Potters Field Park near London Bridge to remember the victims.

NHS England said 36 people remained in hospital, with 18 in a critical condition.

The Met Police said Butt was a British citizen born in Pakistan, while Redouane claimed to be Moroccan-Libyan.

He also used the name Rachid Elkhdar, claiming to be six years younger.

Assistant Commander Mark Rowley said: "Inquiries are ongoing to confirm the identity of their accomplice."

He said the investigation into Butt began two years ago but "there was no intelligence to suggest that this attack was being planned and the investigation had been prioritised accordingly".

He added: "Work is ongoing to understand more about them, their connections and whether they were assisted or supported by anyone else."

The vigil began as a sombre and quiet gathering under the trees in Potters Field Park, where people stood in quiet contemplation looking out over the Thames.

So many did not have the words to describe how they were feeling but spoke of their desire to stand together with others and show love.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan's speech roused the quiet crowd of thousands into hearty applause of agreement when he spoke of his disgust of - and defiance at - the horror of Saturday's events.

After a minute's silence, many went forward to lay flowers beneath the flagpoles of City Hall and lingered to speak with one another.

It was a dignified show of solidarity and strength in the face of fear and hate.

Six women and four men arrested by police after the attack are still being questioned, police said.

Canadian national Chrissy Archibald, 30, is the first victim to be named. Her family said she died in her fiancé's arms after being struck by the speeding van.

A French national was also killed in the attack, according to foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.

The family of 32-year-old James McMullan, from London, said he is believed to be among those who died after his bank card was found on a body at the scene.

lets not fall into a trap, None of them had anything to do with ISLAM that is practiced by billions (father, mother, sister, brother, sons and daughters)

Khurram Butt... another lost Kashmiri Brahmin. :butt

He appeared in a doc. on extremism (ironically I watched it the first time few weeks ago), see in the link, the part where he appears :

(...)
In a statement, Scotland Yard confirmed Butt was known to police and MI5 - but added there was no intelligence to suggest an attack was being planned. They went on to say that Redouane was not known to those authorities.
(...)
Local to his home in east London, Butt was known as Abu Zaitun - or Abu for short.

The 27-year-old came to Britain as a child when his parent's sought asylum from Pakistan - and he lived in a ground-floor flat in Barking.

Neighbours tell a mixed picture of Butt.

One woman, who didn't want to be named, said he stared angrily whenever he saw women cycling on the estate. She described it as "sinister" and "sexist".

Another neighbour said they enjoyed arguing about Arsenal and whether Arsene Wenger should remain manager.

Punish them without mercy by locking them up forever then throw away the key or send them to Saudi as they love their oppression so much. These ******* see kuffar everywhere yet have no problem living in a Non Muslim country. No Muslim needs Butt's his approval to be called a believer.

Always felt Brit Pakistanis are far more zealous Muslims than even Pakistanis in Pakistan. When you have so much emphasis on religion there are some cases who go overboard and cross over to the realm of extremism.

Wonder what was the reason for asylum.

Sure that's why bombings in Pakistan never ever take place. :inti

Not according to posters on here who are always regaling us with horror stories of sectarian murder in Pakistan.

That's true. Most British Pakistanis still think life in Pak is similar to what it was in the 1970's if they have not visited since then. When they do most are very surprised to see that not everyone in Pakistan is religious. Most their just want a good life, job and some entertainment. Brit Pak's are more likely to force religious dogma down your throat then those living in Pakistan. Thankfully, the tableegh-e-jamaat culture within the Pak cricket team retired with Inzi as well. They boy's can breath again without being made to feel guilty over everyhthing.

Let me rerphrase.

If a family member is wrongly suspected and reported. Would you continue to agree with such a policy?

They will only be given internment once they have been convicted in a court of law

If this ever takes place it will be very similar to Guantanamo Bay, maybe minus the water boarding, force feeding and the countless other tactics of torture they use.

And they would have richly deserved it for killing innocent people.

England is a mess. First time I travelled there I was shocked how regressive and backward the Pakistani community and Muslims as whole were. The government and security forces are way too tolerant towards people who preach hate and this is unfortunately the end result.

What is the reason behind that compared to Canada/USA?

I don't like stereotyping an entire faction of the population over the impression of just a few, but each and every single British Pakistani I've met who's grown up in Muslim neighborhoods and towns with big Muslim populations have shown me an inclination of the hate and extremism. Most of them hate white folk and want nothing to do with them. People growing up in Wales, Central London or small cities like Sheffield are different.

Sure, that's why we the Mayor of the Capital is from the Pak community and why we have world class sports stars, actors, singers and successful businessmen. Please don't hurry back.

Where are you from btw?

That mayor is originally from Karachi though.

Yes, these people are Khawarij, they have nothing to do with Islam.

I am cleaning up this thread.

Read the OP and if you have anything to add about the topic, add it. A separate thread to discuss names etc can be done.

You will always find bright lights among the population but I was certaintly taking back by how backward majority of people with Pakistani background were.

Born and bred in Canada.

Let me rerphrase.

If a family member is wrongly suspected and reported. Would you continue to agree with such a policy?

Its not just about reporting, they need to look at more than reporting. If my family member spouted hate, then i would have no qualms. But as in this case people are asking why they were free to spout crap and then go further and kill people, one of the guys was on TV saying and promoting this hate. If people have an ideology that openly or through the net spouts hate then they have to face the consequences. I would look at deportation for any naturalised citizen and internment for any British born subjects. Lives of innocent citizens are more important than political correctness.

What is your Pakistani background? Hope you don't mind me asking but since you are casting aspersions on British Pakistanis en masse I think it would be useful to know so we can compare where the fault lines may be.

Usual suspects, people should look at themselves as well before they preach the genocide of other sects because all that matters is advocating the greatness of your own views. When you fight with other muslims you are no better then the extremists you claim to hate so much. No one is interested in your interpretations so go debate with your own saintly mullahs who can do no wrong. The behaviours of a select few do not define shia , sufi or sunni theology. This infighting among muslims of varying beliefs is one of the pivotal reasons for war, those who want to air grievances should have a capacity for self reflection as well instead of going all umar akmal on us and trying their best to make others angry in this holy month of ramadan.

Sheffield isn't a small City it is much larger than Manchester and is the fourth largest City in England

But lets me ask you how many Pak Canadians are renowned politicians? How many in your parliament? How many sports stars, actors and singers? Or anything else you would like to metion to show Pak Canadians are far more 'foward' and integrated than British Paksitanis.

Having actors, singer, sportstars is not reflective of the overall society. I pretty sure there are a couple of mayors who are Pakistani's but that's beyond the point. Large numbers of Pakistani's here are professionals who value education a lot more that what I witnessed in Britain. Now don't get me wrong there are pockets of areas which is quite similar to say areas in Birmigham Thorncliff being one but large percentage of population is edcucated and hard working.

You havent seen the poverty figures of Pakistanis in Cananda?
Them figures do not reflect what your saying.

It's naive to think people woulnd't be discriminated against. You're asuming only the guilty would be picked up. I guess you have not read how sopt and search went and how many innocent Muslims have arrested for no reason. I guess you think it won't happen to you or your immiediate family.

So it was just your personal opinion without any basis for reason or criteria. Fair enough but Id rather ive in the UK than Canada.

The family were all on benefits but the father also worked selling fruit and veg at a stall in Queens Market in Upton Park. So they lost money when he died and the mother 'didn't really care' about the kids, she said.
A person whose living expenses were being paid by the government, hate the government and its people and killed some of them  This is just height of hypocrisy.

a lot of nonsense being posted here. talks of internment and other inflammatory remarks.

my condolences to the injured and the families of the deceased. may time heal your wounds, and may your memories of the departed fill you with happiness, and hopefully love and hope fills the void they leave behind.

to those who will inevitably find themselves in the crosshairs due to reflex responses, i hope you have the strength to find compassion and forgiveness for those who wish to hold you unjustly accountable.

and finally, condolences to the millions of muslims around the world who continue to be largest victims of such terrorists, and whose suffering is often marginalized.

Well there are a lot of Pakistani youtubers from Canada, that's kinda their niche. :afridi

You should probably widen your social circle bro, no idea why you are mingling with such low lives of society. Hopefully they aren't related. Of course Muslims don't have a colour, many Muslims themselves are white (including terrorists sadly) so I don't understand how those British Pakistanis living in Muslim neighbourhoods can hate white people. They sound very unislamic if what you say is true.

That's true many people of my class I mean who are well educated and fairly rich people are not hardcore Muslims but the problem is in Western Pakistanis dont know for some reason they move towards extremism despite having ideal society for a happy lifestyle

He was a deranged lunatic.

He was kicked out of a mosque because he said Muslims were "kuffar" that didn't grow a beard.

He was reported several times by the Muslim community to the police for his extreme views but was never arrested or not followed.

These type of nut cases need to be locked up or sent to a mental asylum. They are simply not comaptiable to live In a western country.

Yes there will be innocent victims and no doubt it will be painful for those innocent people but if it saves innocent lives then its worth doing. If heaven forbid there is another attack, then the consequences for the muslim community at large will be much worse. We Muslims have chosen to make this our home and in our midst live criminals whose sole aim is to divide the communities into us and them and lets be honest, although the number of people carrying out terrible these terrible crimes is small, there views are pretty much the same view which many that go to Deoband/Wahabbi/ Salafist mosques hold. If people do hold these views than at the first instance give them the option to relocate to Saudi or wherever else the society is to there liking but as we know the Saudi Royals dont believe any of this ideology, its just a method to stay in control.

this is bad. Pakistanis are not involved so much in these extremist activities and now the trend is changing with British Pakistanis. I honestly don't see such trends in the US with Pakistanis and their kids.

What's going on in Britain?

Bro please don't get the wrong idea.

We are talking minuscule numbers.

Example this lunatic called Khuram I don't even know one British Pakistani in my town who resembles even close to the same disgusting backward views as this guy has.

Sure that doesn't mean we stick our heads in the sand and not pretend it doesn't exists. It does but these lunatics either don't get apprehended when they do get reported (no evidence or not enough resources) or they are clever enough to hide.

Above all the international angle shouldn't be forgotten - IS need to be wiped out from Syria and Iraq.

Understood.

Well spoken, sir.

Please enlighten us with more details, I wonder which British Pakistani society you 'experienced'.

Haha.

Just because one pathetic cockroach commits an atrocity doesn't mean all British Pakistanis are like that.

Reality is 99% want these horrible attacks to stop as they will directly effect them due to increased hostility and suspicion.

Up here in Aberdeen the Pakistani community is thriving with most doing very in oil and gas, medicine or Business.

When we came from Glasgow in 1990 they were probably 20 Pakistanis here. Now at least 1000 and all that I know are doing very well indeed.

I concur. A whole lot of British Pakistanis either need to be re-assimilated and deradicalized or deported back to Pakistan or Saudi Arabia.

I can't believe when i see videos of them wearing burkas and shalwar above ankles in western country and dissing them at the same time.

Indeed. And bro, these are folks I've met in Pakistan. The ones who come back to visit or something for a short period of time so definitely my analysis cannot be absolutely true or accurate.

very isolated, conservative, not inclined towards education, many children are not admitted to schools but madrassahs, having no reality check that they are living in the west, some having extreme religious mindset, in the west one would expect that pakistanis would be more modern, progressive and developed but to be honest found the exact opposite.

Funnily enough these religious schools are some of the highest rated for GCSE's unless your talking about boarding schools.

Though what you have wrote is far from the norm. Also which area are you talking about?

According to a Daily Telegraph poll, 24% of muslims showed some kind of sympathy towards 7/7 bombers.

Also a PEW research poll in 2013 suggests that 37% of British Muslims aged between 16-24 would rather live under Sharia than British law, and 36% believed those who converted out of the religion should be executed.

I also remember reading somewhere that a significant portion of British muslims would NOT alert the police if they knew someone from the community was getting involved in extremist activities. I don't remember the source now, will provide it once i find it.

These are disturbing numbers.

Those surveys IIRC were highly criticised for its methodology.

After having grown up in a town with a large Muslim population, admittedly I now live in an area with very few Muslims, hardly any in fact (except my family and a few others here and there). So yes, I may not be fully in touch with what goes on in these inner city areas with large Muslims populations, although I do visit frequently for shopping and to visit friends.

Having said all that I am still highly dubious of these assertions regarding the high percentages as indicated above. If anything, the aforementioned groups are more likely to be typical of inner city culture and gangs generally, whether black, white or the ethnic groups mentioned above, ie drugs, drink, petty theft, gang violence etc., and not devout religious believers wanting Sharia law.

Have you ever been to the UK and seen for yourself to make a statement like that? there are Islamic schools, just like there are Jewish, Catholic, Hindu schools which all follow the same national curriculum, however only a small minority ever consider sending their children to a faith school, not the many as you claim. It's nothing like in Pakistan where the poor send their kids to an ungoverned madrasa because they it's cheaper, that would be illegal in the UK.

As for not being inclined towards education, this is an issue not only effecting the Pakistani communities, everyone is effected due to the dropping level of standards in education and rising cost of further education.

How? By whom? Not unless you open back doors for intelligence services to all forms of secure communications using encryption.

But once you did that, it won't take long for the same back doors to be 'opened' and exploited by criminals never mind terrorists. And then bang goes your secure commercial communications, such as banking and other forms of business activity that relies upon secure exchange of information (ie virtually everything). Do you think every one wants to go back to a paper and cash based trade and economy?

Politicians who make these useless, but impressive sounding statements don't have a clue as to what they're talking about. They're talking through their backsides blowing hot air.

I have never really lived in an area with a high Muslim population although I have socialised with plenty who have so I think I can still get the general pulse of those areas and would agree 100%. Hell if someone came asking me in a survey if I agreed we should have Sharia law I would probably say yes just to see their faces although in reality I wouldn't want it in a million years. Reminds me of someone I knew from school who was driving cabs for a while, after 9/11 he used to get asked a lot about bin Laden by tanked up lads after a night out and he used to say "Oh yeah, bin Laden he's my Uncle, diamond geezer. Woz just at our house last week."

Not sure how seriously you can take these surveys.

I concur. A whole lot of British Pakistanis either need to be re-assimilated and deradicalized or deported back to Pakistan or Saudi Arabia.

Although unprecedented, will Britain stand to lose a lot if (hypothetically) all British Pakistanis were sent to Pakistan or Country X? Are British Pakistanis the defacto heads of a particular skill in the country? Will a particular sector of the economy tank if/when they're no longer there?

Three terrorists who murdered eight innocent people and injured almost 50 others around London Bridge were lawfully killed by armed police, an inquest jury has concluded.

Khuram Butt, Rachid Redouane and Youssef Zaghba were shot dead as they rampaged through the capital's Borough Market on 3 June 2017, stabbing members of the public after running people over on the nearby bridge.

An inquest into the deaths of the three men heard graphic accounts of how unarmed officers tried to confront and track the attackers in the minutes before armed back-up arrived.

Khuram Butt was caught on CCTV cameras cleaning his 12in knife inside a restaurant

Terrorist's brother-in-law reported him to police
PC Bartosz Tchorzewski and PC Sam Balfour were among the first officers to arrive at Borough Market, as the three terrorists continued to confront and stab members of the public.

PC Balfour said: "There was a call that came out pretty much as we were arriving at the back gates of Waterloo police station, a call came out to say a van had hit a number of pedestrians on London Bridge and had crashed.

"Westminster Bridge was still very much in our memory, how that attack was carried out.

"We had been briefed a lot on the sort of tactics that we know that Islamist-inspired terrorists would use.

When terror struck
Stories from the London Bridge attack on 3 June, 2017
"So I was very aware that is what we were going into."

PC Tchorzewski said the officers were being updated on police radio, with multiple reports suggesting a very serious incident was unfolding.

"You assume the worst and you try to think what you may encounter and what you will do but, to be honest, nothing can prepare you for that," he said.

"No kind of briefings or news can give you a proper overview, to face something like that in real life.

"It is totally different, a different experience."

The officers said when they reached the street the attackers were on, all they had for protection were their police issue batons.

PC Balfour said: "Three of them are stood there in a line, holding knives.

"One of them was raising it above their head and they were shouting at us.

"Straight away I drew my baton and tried to get on the radio and tell everyone where they were."

The officers said they had little choice but to back off, continue to track the terrorists, and help guide armed units to their location.

When armed response vehicles reached the scene, the attackers were in the process of stabbing their final victim, Antonio Filis.

Mr Filis told the hearing at the Old Bailey in central London that he wandered into the middle of the attack, as he was looking at his mobile phone.

"I was walking at quite a quick pace," he said.

"My sight was not directed in front, but down. I didn't notice any people initially until I came across three individuals.

"At least one of the three looked at me for a very brief instant. He came towards my direction at a fast pace.

"I felt a blow on my head. I couldn't tell what hit me. At first I thought it was a bottle or another blunt instrument. I had no idea it was a knife.

The police reacted quickly to the attack in June 2017

'I thought I would be shot': PCs on terror attack
"When all was said and done, I could only think they were going for my throat."

The men only stopped their attack on Mr Filis as the armed response vehicles pulled up at the scene.
The inquest was told that Butt began running towards the first officer out of the vehicle, who backed off a couple of paces, before opening fire.

The two other attackers ran at another two armed officers and were also immediately shot.

Those killed were Christine Archibald, 30, James McMullan, 32, Alexandre Pigeard, 26, Sebastien Belanger, 36, Kirsty Boden, 28, Sara Zelenak, 21, Xavier Thomas, 45, and Ignacio Echeverria, 39.
Amid fears the men were wearing suicide bomb vests, which later turned out to be fakes, officers fired follow-up shots, almost 50 in total.

The inquest into the deaths of three terrorists followed the main hearing into the deaths of the eight members of public.

During that first hearing, the inquest was told of multiple occasions where intelligence on the attackers was known, but little - if any - action took place.

Butt, in particular, was on the radar of the security services, because of his links to extremism.

He had been under partial surveillance in the months leading up to the London Bridge attack, but that failed to pick up on the group's preparations for their actions on 3 June.

Two years before the attack, Butt's own brother-in-law had become so concerned about his descent into extremism, he called the anti-terrorist hotline.

Sara Zelenak was killed in the 2017 London Bridge attacks. Her mother says she's found "a bit of peace" at the inquest.

'It does bring up raw emotion'
Usman Darr said he was deeply alarmed by one conversation with Butt in the aftermath of a murder, where a captured Jordanian pilot was burned to death by the Islamic State terror group.

"He was justifying the burning of the pilot," Mr Darr said.

"He explained to me what had happened, as if he had ears on the ground.

"He told me about how they captured him, they brought him in front of a council, which included the parents of the dead kids who died in the village attack.

"And he explained to me how they all came to an understanding and had a vote... the pilot had to die in the same way their kids had died.

"That's when I knew that he's got information which is not out there in the mainstream, someone is feeding him."

Mr Darr said he decided to pass on his concerns to the anti-terrorist tip-off phoneline.

"I made a decision that he needs to be watched, I couldn't take the risk," he added.

The inquest was told that the contents of that call were never passed to MI5 or counter-terror detectives.

The families of those who died believe opportunities were missed, which could have prevented the attack.

But, ultimately, the coroner said the responsibility for the events of 3 June 2017 lay with the three attackers, who the inquest jury agreed were lawfully killed by police firearms officers.

Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick welcomed the findings of the inquest and paid tribute to the efforts of the police officers on the night of the attack.

Met chief: Our officers acted lawfully
"They acted calmly, quickly, decisively and in accordance with their training," she said.

"Their is not greater responsibility for an officer than making the split-second decision as to whether to use lethal force.

"The response that night, in the most extreme and chaotic circumstances, was quite frankly extraordinary."
