‘If I told you everything you would cry,’ Amir Khan explains. By Declan Taylor, in San Francisco

THERE is a genuine air of sadness surrounding Amir Khan as he emerges from the most turbulent period of his career, which started with that devastating swing of Saul Alvarez’s right fist in Las Vegas 10 months back.

A damaging family feud, seismic changes in his backroom team and a chronic hand injury have required urgent attention before the former unified light-welterweight champion could even begin to think about actually boxing again.

But, now 30, Khan says here begins a new era, one which he desperately hopes will end with another world title around his waist.

He has no fight scheduled yet, although plans are well afoot for his ring return, but Khan has already been in camp for two months. And it is from the reception area of Virgil Hunter’s San Francisco gym that he lays out his plan.

“Obviously a lot has changed in my team,” Khan says, while the likes of Peter Quillin, Karim Mayfield and Tony Yoka go to work on the bags in the adjacent room.

“Taz is no longer working, Saj is no longer working. Saj was my best friend and he left. It wasn’t a nice way they left. I had the final say. I said, ‘look guys, if you’re not going to work, I don’t want to be paying you for doing nothing’.

“They probably thought: ‘this is our best chance to cash out, Amir is done with his career and we’re probably going to ask for redundancy and get out’. And that’s what they all did. They all wanted a big cheque and they left.”

Uncle Taz Khan and long-time friend Saj Mohamed were as close as anyone to the welterweight throughout his career.
It is difficult to imagine the boxer without them, or his father Shah, around him.

“I think it is the end of an era…I think it is the end of an old era where we all had good times,” he says, like the frontman in a band reminiscing about a long-forgotten tour.

“They all did well – and did better than a lot of people. We all made a lot of money in the last era but I think it’s about setting my legacy now.

“I’m the boss of everything now. I’m making sure I make the right choices and decide if I do the right things. We will see.”

Financial issues appear to be at the heart of the dispute, and Khan says one particular payment sums up the problems he felt so obliged to act on.

“Something funny happened to me actually,” he said. “I got a bill for a server for like eight grand. I thought, ‘eight grand? What’s that for?’ I emailed the guy back asking what the bill was for.

“He said, ‘oh that’s for the server in your office’. I thought to myself, ‘I’m a fighter – I don’t need an office’. Why would I need an office with a server? I’m a fighter.

“I’m the only person going in the ring but I’m paying server costs and God knows what else for an office that I don’t even need. My office is the gym. The server is for all old emails going back years – what do I need those for? I don’t even look at my emails now!

“When you’re making millions, sometimes people forget about the little costs but they add up, man.

“I lost sight of it because obviously I left it to people that I trusted. I thought they could do everything and I could sit back and focus on my boxing. But it wasn’t like that. It’s funny now thinking about it – I was young then and I relied on my team, whatever they said went. This is a learning curve.

“The way they left everything… I remember being on the phone because I needed the cooker fixed but I didn’t know what to do. I had to make payments but I’d never, ever made a bank payment in my life. I usually bring the money in and everything gets done for me.

“When you start making big money the people around me should have been looking out for my interests but it didn’t seem like that. They were just saying ‘the money is coming in just keep spending it’.

“It was a great wake-up call and I’m glad I did it now. One day I knew I had to do it.”

Khan’s chilling knock-out defeat to Mexican idol Canelo on May 7, he says, was the trigger for his decision.

“I lost in May but by October/November it had all changed,” he explains.

“Because I said I wanted to take full control of everything, my old team said, ‘there you go’ and walked away.

“I said to Saj, ‘I want to keep you on, I’ll still pay you and I’ll look after you and even after my career I want you to run and manage everything’. He turned around and said ‘no’. He thought ‘Amir is done now’.

“When he said that it was a big slap in my face because I was always there for him. I thought when it was my turn and I needed him there for me… The people who should’ve been there for me, weren’t.

“I should have got on to my things a few years ago when I was 21 or 22 and made sure everything was right. I didn’t want to ever think about that. I just assumed it would be going the right way.

“I had property advisers who used to rip me off, I had accountants who ripped me off. I changed everything.

With what I’ve gone through if I told you everything you would start crying. When money starts coming in a lot of people change. When it stops you see their true colours. And when I took a loss and everyone thought I was done, I saw everyone’s true colours. That is why I had to make these big changes.

It just so happens that as Khan goes it alone, with only his wife Faryal Makhdoom and young daughter Lamysa in tow, he could be on the verge of pocketing the biggest purse of his career.

The 2004 Olympic silver medalist is planning on a tune-up fight next month – with a spot on the undercard of Andre Berto v Shawn Porter on April 22 a possibility – while he may even stage his own UK card around a similar date.

Meanwhile, despite reports to the contrary, talks about a £32m superfight with Manny Pacquaio remain ongoing – and victory over the Filipino senator would also secure the WBO welterweight title.

He said: “If they want to open the market in Dubai it’s a key fight because you’ve got a lot of Filipinos there, a lot of Pakistanis, a lot of Muslims. It works really well from that end.

“There are a lot of investors who are happy to put this fight on. People are saying that the money in Dubai isn’t there and that’s why the fight is off. But the money is there.

“At the moment there are still talks going on. I know all this stuff that Bob Arum is saying, but behind the scenes things are being done.

Even now I think there might be a possibility that the fight could happen. I really believe there’s still a chance.

“I’m still here training because I have a date end of April, early May anyway. So I spoke to Al Haymon and he said he’s going to get me a fight. The Pacquiao fight is one that would be really hard to turn down if it came to me. Even though I said that I want to have a tune-up fight, I can go into a fight like that being the underdog and winning that fight to get me where I have to be.

“After the Canelo fight my old team thought, ‘he’s had his big fight, he’s done now’. So this is the chance for me now to prove everyone wrong.

“I’m not done. I’ve just turned 30, I’ve still got some good years left in me. It could be my time to shine.”

So is the air of sadness misleading?

“I’m happy,” he insists. “It has matured me a lot
– I saw white hair on me for the first time in my life on my beard. That’s all the bills and all the problems.

“I’m happy. It is a time that I prove everyone wrong. My old team will think I made the worst choice by letting them go and say, ‘watch his career go down the drain’. I’m not going to let that happen. I’m looking forward to proving them wrong.”

Fighters are so easily manipulated but it is even more sickening when it's your family and friends who manipulate you. Really sad about what has happened with Amir but good on him for making the decision to get rid of those who stabbed him in the back as tough as it may have been Adil_94 Red Devil London_Lahori

Speaking in the Mail today he stated that millions of pounds of his are unaccounted for.

A sad, but not surprising, state of affairs.

It's familiar and very ancient story in boxing unfortunately although the role of family and friends here has been shocking in a sense, I've seen such debacles in Brit pak family's man when it comes to money the disputes get very ugly and relationships are ruined beyond repair. Forget outsiders, your own blood becomes the biggest enemy which is so sad.

Quotes from Gabbar Singh article:

"

'I took care of my parents. I bought them a very nice house. After all they are still my mum and dad.
'So I have been the best son possible. I’ve done everything for them. I’ve I’ve done far more than any other boy would have done.’

His younger boxing brother Haroon was upset Amir did not attend his wedding, but the elder sibling says: 'I feel sorrow for him now, but everyone did well from my hard work. And boxing is tough.’

Contact is being restored incrementally: ‘I speak to my parents occasionally now. When one of my sisters saw that some tiles had blown off the roof of my house back home she sent me an e-mail. A phone call or a text might have been nicer but she did let me know.’

Where there was agitation a few months ago, now there is pause for reflection.

In his professional as well as private life.

We hear these stories all the time about boxers who end up losing track of their money because of friends, family and hangers on, usually when they are washed up. I think that is the case with Amir, he's making more headlines for his family bust ups and his wife's plastic surgery than he is for boxing these days. I think he needs to hang up the gloves and sign up for some tacky reality tv show. Although you could argue he's already in one.

They have been stealing from him a long long time, plus no offence to Amir but in certain matters he's not the smartest guy around so it must have been easy; and not that you can't be intelligent without having gone to university but his wife having been a student and taken up academia certainly will help moving forward and allow him to make better decisions. People also made a lot of fun of Asif Vali in the past but Team Fury have used his services and now he is back with Khan when all the theiving rest have left him having stabbed him in the back and taken many hand outs

Some families think when one of their sons make it big, they all have an unofficial share in it ....

dont agree with it, but can see why they may think that way, their POV would be "whats the point of auditing and bean-counting among family members"

Yeah he is past his best but being a high profile sportsman in the country when something bad happens and it comes out in public then he ought to be in the headlines, he didn't orchestrate them but has attempted to defuse the situation and repair the damage to his rep others have caused. Khan is not the sought of guy to indulge in these dirty reality shows but spends more time then anything on his charity foundation but that doesn't get no where near as much attention people always focus on stuff like this.

Good that he finally cleared the air although tbh was Saj with him when he was nothing? If that was the case i find it sad tbh time and again this has happened even some of the lame bollywood movies covered this in ta ra rum pam somecrap ,humbling to read the experience though makes one wonder at times that 'assumption' is the worst disease.

Feel sorry for him, hope he can sort out both his private life and career, seems like a good lad.

Yeah Amir and Saj have been best friends since their childhood and grew up together both were a great example of Indian and Pak origin folk getting along fine in the UK unlike on these forums :mv, there are some funny stories in Amir's book after he became an Olympic medalist of chasing Saj with a fire extinguisher in college :)) the two were thick as thieves, never thought they'd ever separate.

Khan has established several foundations. A new one finances an orphanage in Gambia, which he will find time to open this summer.
This is a far nicer, more substantial person than the critics, the doubters and the social media trolls would want you to believe.

What is funny about the line from that article is if you look at the reader comments below it. :91:

He is whining about being abandoned when he is the one who said to them that he doesn't need them anymore. Typical case of paranoiac personality.

And I don't know why people feel bad for him. He abandoned people who were with him since the start because he needs to be sucked up to.

There's always two sides to every story. I don't feel sorry for him, he's still a rich man.

Behind every successful man there is a great woman..but Khan doesn't have this. I don't think it's a coincidence since his marriage, his life and his career has gone down hill. He's still a great role model and a very talented boxer, hope he can turn things around.

I said before that this whole saga is about money. Knowing how the desi mind works, i also think that this is bad news for the wife. Its only a matter of time before he divorces and when he does he will claim that the family has taken his money and thats makes it difficult for her to make any major claim.

Amir should stop playing his private life in public. Family problems are best solved behind closed doors. He can't complain about people gossiping when he himself seems to be encouraging it.

I agree with you, but money can never buy true love or repair relationships; so from that perspective he has suffered a big loss. A lot has been said from the other side, this is his story; I don't think he enjoys having to speak out like this but with everything out there in the open he has an image to protect in terms of his business and charity foundation; wouldn't say anyone is perfect but he's good role model like you say.

As mentioned by another poster, Khan really needs to stop bringing his personal life into the public arena. He doesn't have long left so really should focus all his energy into boxing. If I was his advisor I would limit all social media posts, try to stay away from the spotlight and focus on his career . It would be a great shame someone so talented ends up a washed up fighter or even worse hurt badly in the ring because he didn't put his all into his proffesion.

If the Pacman fight isn't fixed, he should just fight anyone before Ramadan to keep his boxing profile in the spotlight.

These fools can learn a thing or two from the legend Money Mayweather. No symphathy for entitled brats who waste or mismanage everything and then blame it on everyone else but themselves.

Wow he had never made a bank payment in his life??...

Should never mix business with friends/family...unfortunately hes not the first nor the last boxer to be mistreated by those close to him...its a sad state of affairs really...

Not sure but maybe its his wife that helped open his eyes to what was happening around him...

What the hell about saj and and amir being a Pakistani Indian relationship

Saj mahmood is a Pakistani and is a cousin to amir khan

Yeh I believe his family cashed out and were riding on the gravy train as long as possible even though amir has no chin but kudos for selling amir as long as possible

But I personally believe amir was a idiot himself he and his wife have blown more money, sex tape scandal, killing a pedestrian in an accident, his cocky trash talk, wife washing all dirty laundry in public,

I think after canelo fight and all this family problems with his wife, the team knew amir Is washed and embarrassing porn video jumped of the train.

But I also believe that amirs parents love him and will want all the best for him, people who disrespect and anger their parents won't go far.

I think this faryal makhdoom will ruin amir khan

True, you're probably right; first time I agree with shaykh about anything related to Amir :yk His wife has experienced higher education as well so perhaps that helped as she was able to see through the deceit while Amir felt he had always been in good hands, yeah true I'd have thought in this era there'd be more awareness with regards to fighters keeping themselves in order though and there tends to be help available as well

There is no denying that Floyd is thre greatest promoter/manager/businessman in the history of boxing :)) and you're right many could learn a thing or two from him in that regard.

Where you been?! TMT! WE THE BEST :yk3

Serves Khan right. This is what happens when you employ relatives.

Poor guy, he's a good person with a big heart but fame and wealth haven't treated him well because he's not shrewd enough to see people for who they are and that has led to him getting caught up with some two-faced leaches.

InshAllah, he gets his career back on track and wins that one, final title and gets the Pac-Man fight as well. I'm not going to talk about anyone's family and their personal problems but Khan doesn't need any more distractions at this point in time.

Can't wait to hear the announcer go "Amiiiiiiiiiiiiirrr KHAN!" Once again.

Retired just like MoneyMay.

TMT for life!!!!

The easiest way to measure Amir Khan's intelligence or lack thereof is to go back and look at how he handled a major money making showdown with Kell Brook specially after Brooks defeated Shawn Porter. That could have been Amir Khan's career definining moment but he blew it.

:)) We want you back! Boxing is not the same :( #TMT4LYF

He's coming out of retirement for a fight against that little dweeb Conor :yk3

Well definitely be back if that fight happens. I still have major doubts about it but we'll see what happens. More than the fight which the result is a forgone conclusion what I am looking forward to is the buildup.

They priced themselves out, that bum needed Khan not the other way round and Amir secured a high profile bout against Canelo instead; yes it was not wise given that he had to move up 2 weights but he got what he desired a big fight on the world scale. No one cares for Brook beyond his hometown, in fact after he beat Porter many in America felt he got lucky and besides that win for a fighter who has 30+ battles he got nothing to show and it's unacceptable. Floyd, Manny, Thurman/Garcia etc are the fights which Amir wants, what does he get out of facing a bum no one cares for outside sheffield? it does nothing for his legacy and there is nothing defining about beating Brook besides getting a bit of applause from some narrow minded casuals in the UK who probs would go back to hating on Khan the next day. I agree Khan is not the smartest guy out there but your example doesn't apply.

I really respect you for that, such debacles tend to bring out the worst in people and they relish the fire in others homes for petty giggles. Not sure if the Manny bout will happen but this is a blessing in disguise, he really needs a tune up in preparation for whatever big fight he has after Ramadan; hopefully by that time he'd be at peace with himself to and just focusing on the sport.
