Ricky Ponting and Kumar Sangakkara - Who is the better Test player and who is the better ODI player?

Think it's a close battle don't know about you guys.


I'll take Punter in both formats, how about you guys? Is this a close battle or is is one sided towards Pointing?

Ponting is one of my all time favorites, I'd definitely take him over Sanga in both formats because of his ability to dominate bowlers.

Yep that's the reason why I would take Punter as well even though Sanga is one of my all time favourites.

If I have to rate them out of 10, it would be

Tests:
Ponting-9.5/10
Sanga-8.75/10

Odis:
Ponting-9.5/10
Sanga-8/10

It's debatable in tests, not in ODIs. Ponting a better batsman in ODIS by a big margin. Sangakkara had a good last year in odis but apart from that he was average in his whole career. Ponting was better career wise, produced the goods in WCs as well.

I will take Ponting in ODIs.

In tests, I will take Sanga in Asia and Ponting everywhere else.

Sanga is among the top 3 player of spin bowling I have ever seen and Ponting was among the top 3 players of fast bowling.

In Tests a close call 50/50 for mine. In LOIs tho Ponting comfortably ahead. So overall Ponting by a fair margin.

Sanga was very stylish/elegant batsmen, he was very easy on the eye. Ponting, even though didn't have Sanga's elegance is the better batsmen.

From Ponting's era, Sachin and Lara are the only couple of batsman whom I'd rate higher than Ponting.

Ponting credentials as an ATG are only second to some people.

His only blemish is perhaps his record in India.

Sangakkara is an ATG as well, but a case could be made for him scoring easy runs against Bangladesh (95 average ) Pakistan ( 74 average ) and Zimbabwe ( 90 average )

Ponting's only blemish is perhaps the outlier against Zimbo where he averages 80 plus.

Add that to Ponting's World Cup finals and ODI performances, and Sangakkara goes almost into oblivion.

Sanga was more solid, but it came at a price. He never had much impact in any form of Cricket. Ponting on the other hand had some technical flaws, but he had so much more impact in all formats.

I'm biased, Punter is my favorite batsman.

In ODIs there's no comparison to be made. Ponting was far better.

In tests, I suppose an argument can be made statistically, but I found Ponting to have a far greater impact on the game when out in the middle.
