Actor Rishi Kapoor has died at 67 after a two-year battle with cancer. Rishi breathed his last at the Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai. His wife and actor Neetu Kapoor was by his side, confirmed brother Randhir Kapoor. “Yes, he is no more” he told Hindustan Times.

Minutes earlier, Amitabh Bachchan tweeted the news saying he was devastated. He’s GONE .. ! Rishi Kapoor .. gone .. just passed away .. I am destroyed !” wrote Amitabh, who has been a friend and colleague of Rishi’s for years.

Born in the first family of Hindi cinema, Rishi Kapoor was the son of the man India call the showman, Rishi Kapoor, and grandson of the famous Prithviraj Kapoor. Rishi was the second son of late actor Raj Kapoor and the sibling of Randhir, Ritu Nanda, Rima Jain and Rajeev Kapoor.

He started his career early, as a child actor in his father’s film Mera Naam Joker (1970), for which he also won a Filmfare Award. His first role as an adult came in the iconic Bobby (1973) opposite Dimple Kapadia. He also received the Filmfare Best Actor Award in 1974 for the film.

He went on to play the romantic lead in 92 films between 1973 and 2000, and was awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. He appeared opposite his future wife Neetu Singh in 12 films.

He was part of hit films such as Amar Akbar Anthony, Laila Majnu, Rafoo Chakkar , Sargam, Karz, Bol Radha Bol and others. In the later stage of his career, he was seen in films such as Kapoor and Sons, D-Day, Mulk and 102 Not Out.

The actor was last seen in Emraan Hashmi’s The Body and had recently announced his next project, a remake of Hollywood film The Intern, also featuring Deepika Padukone.

His death left the country shocked and distressed. Fans and colleagues who were still reeling from the death of actor Irrfan Khan a day ago, voiced their thoughts. Akshay Kumar called it a nightmare for Bollywood after the death of actor Irrfan Khan just a day before on Wednesday. “It seems like we’re in the midst of a nightmare...just heard the depressing news of #RishiKapoor ji passing away, it’s heartbreaking. He was a legend, a great co-star and a good friend of the family. My thoughts and prayers with his family,” he tweeted.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wrote, “This is a terrible week for Indian cinema, with the passing of another legend, actor Rishi Kapoor. A wonderful actor, with a huge fan following across generations, he will be greatly missed. My condolences to his family, friends & fans all over the world, at this time of grief.”

Rishi’s hospitalisation was confirmed by his elder brother, actor Randhir Kapoor. “It’s true that he has been admitted to the hospital. He is in Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital. He was not keeping well and had some problem, so we admitted him early this morning,” Randhir had said on Wednesday evening. Asked if it was an emergency situation, Randhir said: “That’s why he has gone to the hospital. But I know that he will be alright. Neetu (Kapoor) is by his side.”

In 2018, Rishi Kapoor was diagnosed with cancer, following which the actor was in New York for more than a year to receive treatment. While he returned to India this year, he had again been hospitalised in New Delhi in early February, while on a visit to New Delhi.

RIP. Had done some great roles in some great movies.

May god bless his soul.

What a worst week for bollywood and for india (or all over the world) to loose great actors like irfan khan, rishi kapoor.

Yesterday I was upset & felt sad upon hearing the news about Irfan khan and today it is disappointing day as well :(

I only know him because of how he was made to look like a fool on Twitter after Pakistan beat India in the CT2017 final.

Nonetheless, may his soul RIP. Two huge losses for Indian cinema.

RIP. Very underrated actor. He was actually an amazing actor but being good looking worked against him as he was stereotyped as a romantic, chocolate boy actor but he was a powerful performer When given the opportunity.

He even managed to overshadow Kamal Hassan when they worked together with Kamal being one of the finest actors ever produced by India.

Saddened by this loss, he had more to offer now as he was focusing on challenging character backed roles now.

RIP. Remember watching a few of his movies in childhood

Yeah same. Although I don't remember any of them being any good. Always felt sorry for him, he was the short tubby brother of the far more dashing Sashi.

He was nephew of Shashi.. his father was the brother of Shashi.

Why Rishi Kapoor was a big fan of Pakistani cricketer Wasim Bari

The heartbreaking news of Indian cinema losing two of its finest actors on successive days is akin to seeing the two best batsmen of your team surrender to a deadly fast bowler from an opposition team.

Remember the 1999 Eden Gardens Test when a certain Shoaib Akhtar introduced himself to international cricket by rattling the stumps of Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar with back-to-back 90mph yorkers, silencing 90,000 vociferous Indians?

A day after Irrfan Khan had lost his battle with cancer, the cinema lovers woke up to another tragic news on Thursday as Rishi Kapoor raised the white flag after a two-year battle with leukemia.

His heart may have stopped beating, but Rishi will always hold a special place in a million hearts melted by his nuanced acting and good looks in 1970s.

Like the vast majority of Indians, Rishi was a cricket fan too. And his admiration for a Pakistani wicketkeeper once stumped Qamar Ahmed, the former Pakistani first-class cricketer who went on to work for the BBC as a cricket correspondent.

"I was in India to cover the 1979 India-Pakistan cricket series when Muhammed Ali, the legendary Pakistani actor, asked me if I would accompany him to Raj Kapoor's house in Bombay," Ahmed remembered.

"Ali was invited by Raj Kapoor for dinner during the Bombay Test. I was reluctant at first, but Ali told me, 'Don't worry. They don't behave like film stars at home. You won't feel uncomfortable'.

"So I went there and saw people like Dilip Kumar. That's when Rishi came up to me and introduced himself. When I told him I was from Pakistan, there was a big smile on his face and said, 'Oh, I am a big fan of one of your cricketers'.

"Who? Imran (Khan)?" I asked him.

"No," he said.

"Then I thought he must be a fan of Javed Miandad or Zaheer Abbas. After all, Imran, Javed and Zaheer were three most famous Pakistani cricketers then," said Ahmed, the former left-arm spinner who dismissed the three famous brothers of Pakistan cricket - Hanif Mohammad, Mushtaq Mohammad and Sadiq Mohammad - in domestic matches.

But Rishi said he was a fan of Wasim Bari, the wicketkeeper in that team.

"I was very surprised because Wasim was a very good wicketkeeper, but he wasn't a star.

"But Rishi said he admired Wasim for his hairstyle. And that Wasim looked like a film star. I will never forget the smile on Rishi's face when I got Wasim to speak to him over phone. He was so happy that he invited me to his marriage.

"I was touched by his gesture, but couldn't attend his wedding -- which took place a couple of weeks after I met him -- because I had to cover the Kanpur Test match," said Ahmed, Pakistan's most respected cricket writer who has covered 450 Test matches, 739 one-dayers and 9 World Cups.
