Roy Hodgson has stepped down as England manager after the Three Lions crashed out of Euro 2016 in embarrassing fashion with tonight's 2-1 defeat to Iceland in Nice.

Wayne Rooney gave the Three Lions the ideal start courtesy of a fourth-minute penalty but that was as good as it got for Roy Hodgson's side.

Ragnar Sigurdsson replied within a minute and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson added a second when his strike squirmed past Joe Hart and into the net.

With plenty of time left on the clock there was hope, but England faded badly and, once again, came up short against limited but disciplined opposition.

The defeat represents a stark contrast to the perfect qualifying record England achieved en route to the tournament and Hodgson has called time on his spell in charge.

The Croydon-born manager's contract was set to expire at the end of the tournament regardless and FA Chairman Greg Dyke had previously suggested Hodgson's future would be linked to the team's success.

Now the side has fallen at the first knock-out hurdle to lowly opposition Hodgson has decided the time is right for a new man to take the reins and has stood aside with immediate effect and a new coach will attempt to lead England to the 2018 World Cup.

There aren't many good English coaches so we may have to down the forgein route. Problem is most of the top forgein coaches are at top clubs and they wouldn't want the England job. Wouldn't be suprised if pardew is appointed. Not expecting good things from him

Terrible manager.

He should never have been appointed as England manager in the first place.

understandable, question who will be the next manager, as people are already saying gareth southgate, neville, brendon rodgers - thr all not good enough to manage, dont think england fa will want a foreigner.

tough times ahead, it looks like this current generation look like very good raw talent but mentally weak with no proper leader-captain

Yet again coach will be made scapegoat whilst the overrated players continue to be over paid. Eng will always be rubbish,

There's something that happens to these players every time they come together. Kane and alli killing it all year. Can't do it in a Eng shirt.

And so are the players. Doesn't matter who coaches them. Will always bottle it.

At least a good manager will be able to get these average players to play that extra 10% better which would be good enough to at least beat the likes of Russia, Slovakia and Iceland.

I repeat. No manager can coach these bottlers. Same old story every tournament.

I've said for years Hodgson is an embarrassment of a coach.

I saw how clueless he was at Liverpool, how he continually shifted blame and lacked any coherent plan.

He is the epitome of mediocrity who was appointed as he wouldn't rock the boat. An FA establishment yes man.

A master of self-preservation but tonight realised the game was up and rightly resigned.

cmon give iceland credit, they looked clueless within first few minutes - the goalie giving that peno was absolutely stupid from him, england should have controlled it from thr on, but give iceland credit - 2 quick goals and held on making england look poor.

What a jobber nation England is. Just there to make the ranks. They invented cricket, have the biggest league in club football but always are poor to mediocre. Shameful that i used to support them at one point.

Same here but then I got sick & tired of the same old rubbish in every tournament so I stopped supporting them.

In the end it's the best for England that hrs gone. Nice guy but clueless manager

England is a 2nd tier team in international football similar to the likes of Sweden, Slovakia, etc. They don't have the same skill levels or the ball control the other top teams have and neither do they have the fitness and stamina levels of a top team. They are nowhere near to the likes of Germany, Spain, Italy or other top European and Latin American teams. They just get more coverage because of the British media and get overrated in the process. I don't know why it's seen as a surprise everytime England departs from an international tournament.

will rank alongside graham taylor and steve maclaren as one of englands worse managers ever.

The England players are a lot better than they looked yesterday, but you have to have a coherent game plan and pick players in their natural positions. Hodgson lacks authority and decisiveness. Italy's team this year is hardly full of stars, but their manager knows exactly how to build a team whose sum is greater than the parts. Same goes for Iceland for that matter. Most of their squad can't even get into the premier league in England.

But Capello was hardly impressive either. Even under Eriksson, they weren't this bad but also wasn't great too. The farthest they have reached in tournaments are the quarter finals in the recent times. I read a stat that they have won just 6 knockout matches in tournaments since 1966. It is a really poor record for a country that has the world's most popular football league.

Under Erikson the performances were a lot better. England were unlucky to lose to Portugal on penalties at both Euro 2004 and WC 2006. The problem England have is that they don't have any top English manager. All the big clubs in England have foreign managers and the FA want an English manager so they end up appointing rubbish like Roy who has never managed at the highest level and hasn't won anything so no wonder the last three tournaments have been an absolute disaster.

As for the premier league, it is a great league but the only thing making it great is the world class foreign players. None of the English players have the quality of the likes of Aguero, Payet, De Brueyne, Martial, Fabregas. When was the last time England genuinely had a world class player? Scholes back in the day and maybe Rooney 7-8 years ago even though he has never done it at international level but in recent times England haven't had a single world class player. Even Wales have one in Bale. The lack of a world class player and average managers equals recipe for disaster for England in every tournament.

Blanc, Van Gaal and Pellegrini are all available as far top foreign managers go.

Someone like Southgate would be atrocious.

dont think anyone will want van gaal in england, at Man Utd he showed he was far to slow something that they are already at international stage,

Blanc - again hes very good manager but at psg he couldnt up the tempo, easy league did good in CL but i would want him to see him manage in italy/germany/spain/england before giving him a position which in reality maybe the hardest job in the world.

Pellegrini - forgot about him, i like him, but i think the english fa will go for an englishman, listening to i.wright, rio, linekar, dixon it seems that the Eng.FA are old fashioned and want another yes man

I like Van Gaal but his dutch style of play isn't suited for English football. We saw that at United. Blanc is a good manager but I don't think he has been tested enough. French league is quite easy for PSG. Pelligrini is very average and massively underachieved with the City team.

Yeah, go for Southgate or Allardyce instead....

These managers aren't the best in the world but they are far better than any English manager at the moment.

That I agree with but it's quite obvious that FA will appoint another yes man in Southgate.

<b>'I wouldn't recognise him' - Hodgson on new Watford boss Edwards</b>

Outgoing Watford boss Roy Hodgson says he has not yet met and "would not recognise" his successor Rob Edwards.

Former Forest Green Rovers boss Edwards has been appointed as Watford's new manager for the 2022-23 campaign.

But Hodgson, 74, who is retiring at the end of this season admitted: "If he wants to speak to me I will be more than happy to speak to him.

"I know who he is and what he has done, but I haven't seen him and wouldn’t be able to recognise him."

The ex England manager added: "But I am not going to impose a conversation on him.

"He doesn't need to speak to me, his talking is going to be speaking with Gino Pozzo [Watford owner], that is who he needs to be speaking to.

"But if he wants to speak to me and hear anything I am thinking I am more than happy to speak to him, but it would have to be an initiative that comes from him."

While Edwards will be preparing to guide the Hornets back to the Premier League from the Championship at the first time of asking, former Liverpool and Fulham boss Hodgson will be stepping away from the game for a second time.

And Hodgson says he will not be tempted to return to the dugout again.

"There is no doubt this feels worse, partly because the team is relegated but also knowing that this retirement will definitely be the serious retirement and I won't get tempted back again after this stint," Hodgson said.

"I have to come to terms with that and it is only right that I come to terms with it. It has been a fantastic innings that I have had, an incredibly long career and a very pleasurable one. I have enjoyed every moment of it, it is the right moment.

"Having said that I was out there on the grass today coaching a small group of players and I still realise I still quite like that side of the job, but I will have to ween myself off it.

"It's dangerous to say never because I am relativity fit and healthy, I am not retiring because I couldn't do it, it's not that sort of situation, but at the same time, next time I will give myself a stern talking to and say, 'Even if you think you are capable, it is not the right thing to do'.

"My CV won't be floating around various clubs, that's for certain."
